Gustave Baumann
Los Angeles: William & Victoria Dailey, 1980. Condition: Fine / fine. No. 90 of 250, octavo size, [43] pp. Gustave Baumann (1881-1971) was a German-American printmaker and painter, one of the leading figures in the revival of colour woodcuts; he spent a great part of his life in Santa Fe, New Mexico, creating work depicting southwestern landscapes, pueblo life, and ancient Native American petroglyphs. This volume is a collection of woodcuts by Baumann, copied from the pictographs found in the caves on the Pajarito Plateau of northern New Mexico, dating from 1150-1500 CE. Baumann faithfully recreates the pictographs from the caves in woodcuts; the pictographs have, over time, been defaced by wind and rain and by the vandalism of tourists, leaving these prints to serve as an archeological record. The woodcuts are printed from the original blocks cut by Baumann in 1939, and the woodcuts on the dust jacket are printed here for the first time. Included also is a foreword by Alfred Vincent Kidder (1885-1963), a leading American archaeologist specialising in the southwestern U.S. and Mesoamerica, who offers insight into the archaeological ramifications of the caves and pictographs. This publication was printed for William and Victoria Dailey, renowned antiquarian bookdealers and owners of the Press of the Pegacycle Lady, by Patrick Reagh (b.1948), son of Los Angeles photographer William Reagh, who has printed numerous fine press editions at his own imprint. DESCRIPTION: Full black cloth with yellow woodcut designs, title in black inside a white rectangle with woodcut border on the … [Click Below for Full Description]

Stanisław Szukalski
Sylmar, CA: 1980. Fantastic double book of Szukalski art, commentary and philosophy. Troughful of Pearls contains art from throughout Szukalski's life, with enlightening commentary. There are a few color photos and one tipped-in plate on colored paper (gluing is fine). Behold!!! The Protong contains drawings and text from Sukalski's immense work on Zermatism. In addition, there is a 33and 1/3 RMP flexi-disc insert of Szukalski speaking, and a card insert with a vocabulary of Protong root-words. To my knowledge, only Behold!!! The Protong has ever been reprinted, and even then without the vocabulary card or flexi-disc. This complete double volume is an amazing overview of Szukalski's art and worldview. Condition is very good, with all pages present and clean. One corner has a small bend - please see photos for condition, and ask for more if you require them. Unique vernacular photo album and scrapbook, detailing the small town racing culture of Rupert, Idaho. AREA
New York: n.p, 1980. Condition: Contents uniformly in near fine to fine condition. Collection of 125 flyers and posters from New York's hottest and most inventive nightclub, Area, during the mid-1980s. Although it was a disco, Area was a purely visual, happenings-based venue, where New York's art, music, design, fashion, and literary worlds collided; Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, or Jean-Michel Basquiat might be brushing up against Michael Forbes, David Byrne, or Georgio Armani, and Stephen Saban would be there to remind them what happened afterwards in his Details magazine column. Unlike other downtown clubs that focused on music or dancing, Area was driven by art and the scene that it engendered, through its theme nights, elaborate installations, and inventive flyers that seemed to embody Warhol's concept of business art. This archive includes Area's famously unconventional invitations, posters, articles, booklets, and other ephemera from the nightclub's short-lived, yet significant, four-year history. Features two cards enclosed in envelopes addressed to Richard Serra. A defining celebration of the creative hedonism of 1980s New York and a remarkable documentation of the "Bright Lights, Big City" years.

Bruno Munari
Danese Edizioni per bambini, 1980. Various square 8vo books made of many materials and bound with many kind of bindings hold inside a 4to book, each one in its plastic pocket. Ask for photoes! The box externally presents the trace of a piece of scotch tape, rubbing and dirt given by the passing of the years and scratches, especially on the back. The inner plastic part is partially detached from the cover, has some fractures and a small missing piece. The interior is yellowed. Book 1 has a small dent in the upper right corner. It is a cardboard book tied with string. The inside of the book is a series of cards tied together by a thread of red wool. Book 2 is stapled and presents consumption along the edges of the corners as well as a little dirt on the cover at the bottom, right under the name of the publisher. It also has a dent on the upper part of the back. The interior of the volume is clean. Book 3 is also stapled and presents what looks like a sunburn on both the front and back, on the more marked front. In addition, the cover appears to have a small fold on the lower right corner. Also on the back side of the ligature, at the top and at the bottom there are two slight tears. The inside of the volume seems generally clean. Book 4 is spiral bound and does not present particular defects except for a little dirt on the corners of the pages visible from the outside. Book 5 is paperback, has external dirt on the back, folds on the rib and dirt on the edges. It also presents dent on the first pages and on the cover along the upper edge. Gregory Corso
1980. A two-part poem penned by Gregory Corso for his friend Fred Martin, Managing Editor at New Directions. Apocryphally at least, Corso "writ out" the poem for Martin at a bibulous evening at one of New York's watering holes. In his time at New Directions, Martin worked with Corso, as well as Allen Ginsberg, Tennessee Williams, William Carlos Williams, and Lawrence Ferlinghetti. "Metaphor" is a variation on Corso's poem "Piffle", published in 1980 -- the same year the poem was "writ out for Fred Martin." Shortly thereafter, following the assassination of John Lennon, the poem was reworked and retitled "For John Lennon." Corso's practice seems to have been constantly to re-write, revise, and recycle his poems, perhaps to fit the occasion.

Kohei Yoshiyuki
<p>Tokyo: Seven Sha, 1980. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Soft cover. Fine/Fine. This is a first edition, first printing of Kohei Yoshiyuki\'s critically acclaimed Document Koen (Document Park) published by Seven Sha, Tokyo, Japan in 1980. Yoshiyuki was a young commercial photographer in Tokyo in the early 1970s when he and a colleague walked through Chuo Park in Shinjuku one night. He noticed a couple on the ground, and then one man creeping toward them, followed by another. I had my camera, but it was dark, he told the photographer Nobuyoshi Araki in a 1979 interview for a Japanese publication. Researching the technology in the era before infrared flash units, he found that Kodak made infrared flashbulbs. Mr. Yoshiyuki returned to the park, and to two others in Tokyo, through the 70s. He photographed heterosexual and homosexual couples engaged in sexual activity and the peeping toms who stalked them. Measuring approximately 11 x 8 inches, the book is bound in photographically illustrated wraps with a thin glassine dust jacket. Both the book and dust jacket are in FINE condition. <br /> <br /></p>

Used with wear and tear. Heinemann 1980. Signing events were rare in those days, not like today. These early signed copies were usually to friends and family, before they were even released into book stores. You can tell by the style of signature and handwriting what are early signed copies. This was however a much later signed book and unique for being line-signed Aside from its fine dust jacket which is the finest we've ever seen on this title, that it is signed with a line for the book makes it unique. Note that the Heinemann titles are the most scarce, especially in good condition as they print runs were smaller. The dust jackets were made of cheaper paper and coating. Wilbur wasn't yet a household name. In fact the later titles even signed, have no value unless in mint condition. We had only two of these signed like this. I borrowed line-signing from other authors events as a means to add more writing, ensuring it wasn't a forgery signature. Sadly forgers will arise whenever money can be made from a famous person's signature. It very much personalizes the book without making unique to one person only. I discussed with Wilbur choices of lines and he personally selected this one. However, Niso objected to line-signing and wouldn't allow him to sign anymore after my selections. These were a personal favor to me. I'm not aware he's ever done this for any other fan since making these line-signed books one of a kind. We are selling a special Wilbur collection on behalf of a client. Wilbur will be releasing his memoirs this Spring so now it the time to invest again. From earl … [Click Below for Full Description]

Jim Robinson (b.1945)
Contemporary (1980-Now). This exquisite English landscape depicting two figures at work in a farmyard comes from Oxfordshire artist Jim Robinson (b.1945). Robinsons' eye for detail and delicate handling of the paint has resulted in this accomplished study of the English countryside; the use of tone and colour create an atmospheric scene, and perfectly captures the moments before dark rain clouds gather over the farm. A mix of acrylic and oil mediums have been used to create depth in the composition. The artwork is well presented in a double card mount with gilt frame. Signed. On wove. Colonel Meinertzhagen
London: Henry Sotheran Limited, 1980. See pictures. Very light wear. At bottom edge, small fray where leather meets cloth, both boards. Several small rub marks in leather at bottom right front corner leather (see pictures, almost undiscernible).Front board has two small spots of whitening to cloth (see pictures). Else, all tissue guards in place, etc.. Along fore-edge there are one or two very small marks when book is closed. Colonel Meinertzhagen's epic ornithology work, printed and bound by the venerable Sotheran's, in a large "Edition de Luxe". Bound in 3/4 leather, limited to 305 numbered and lettered copies (this is 283), and containing 19 tipped-in colored plates, 9 photographic plates, 53 text figures, and 35 text maps (with one at the rear, fold-out). Meinertzhagen claims, in the introduction, that no previous work had been produced on the Birds of Arabia, but this book is contentious; there are claims that he stole most of this work from an unpublished manuscript of George Bates. Meinertzhagen, himself, is quite the character. He claimed the Haversack Ruse as his invention, among other military exploits. His zoological achievements are under scrutiny, to the extant that his stuffed bird collection included stolen examples (from the Natural History Museum). Even his diary was found to have later, wishful, addendums; a notable example being that in 1934, when meeting Hitl … [Click Below for Full Description]

HOIBY, Lee 1926-2011
1980. Folio. 5 pp. Notated in pencil on 16-stave music paper. A working manuscript. Together with three photographic copies of the autograph manuscript fair copy with occasional autograph annotations and corrections in lead and red pencil. "As a composer Hoiby was a modern Romantic from the lineage of Barber and Menotti. The influence of the former is evident in his warm lyricism, while that of the latter is found in a propensity for light, genial humour. Though much of his music is characterized by a disarming diatonic simplicity, his ambitious works tend towards greater harmonic and textural complexity. Interest in his music has centred chiefly around his operatic, choral and vocal works, which seem to stimulate his most deeply felt efforts. Some of these works - for example Summer and Smoke, Galileo Galilei and The Tempest - achieve an eloquence comparable to the later works of Barber. With greater critical acceptance of more conservative musical styles from the early 1980s onwards, Hoiby's music has been performed and recorded with increasing frequency."
