Mikhail Bulgakov
1980. The Master and Margarita is one of the most essential works of Soviet satire. Bulgakov wrote the novel between 1928 and 1940, restarting it many times before his death in 1940, burning the first copy, and later leaving the novel mostly complete but still missing parts. A heavily censored version was first published in Moscow Magazine in 1967. The official publication arrived in 1989 and would not have been possible without the publication and distribution of samizdats such as this one. While Samizdat was initially produced by hand or typewriter, this copy was printed using a computer and captures the fascinating juncture of Soviet dissident practices and digital technology. Beginning in the late 1970s, during the early days of computing, employees at institutions in the Soviet Union managed to print banned texts using line (or drum) printers, usually during night shifts as the use of duplication technology was tightly controlled by the state. By the 1980s, such printers produced text at a rate of several hundred lines per minute. The files containing the texts could be moved from mainframe to mainframe using magnetic tape. Very good condition, minor wear to boards but clean inside. 4to (8 x 12 in.) in contemporary maroon buckram boards with thread stitching. 229 pp [Attributes: Soft Cover]

1980. Various artists. A vast collection of 1500 invitations to art exhibits, artist talks and receptions that span seven decades, from both Soviet and world renowned artists. This unique volume also features program notes, speakers, posters, and promotional objects all rarely available on the market. The selection traces ways in which artists, designers, poets and museums/galleries have used invitation cards and other printed announcements as a part of the staging of conceptual works, installations, performances, and other time-based events and screenings. This diverse grouping of ephemera explores the various, surprising ways that we have been invited to experience art This lot comes from the collection of Viktor Kholodkov (1948-2015), "who fulfilled his passion for books, avant-garde design and paper memorabilia by devoting his life to collecting and dealing of prominent works of Russian graphic art of the first half of the 20th century. Probably Lynn, Mass., January 1880. 28 cm x 22 cm. Printed on diaphanous paper. This rare surviving broadside for the presidential campaign of 1880 has undergone a surface cleaning to remove superficial and ground-in dirt. A previous repair with tape has been reversed. It has been lined with mulberry paper and wheat starch paste. Expertly conserved condition is very good. James A. Garfield (1831 – 1881) is the only sitting member of the House of Representatives to have been elected to the Presidency. (Superman) Tuska, George
D.C. Comics, Inc, 1980. 1 vols. 16 x 22 inches. Fine. A vigorous multi-panel drawing, by Tuska, fully lettered, of the exploits of the first and greatest superhero. Tuska specialized in particularly intense action scenes; he also illustrated such series as Green Lantern, Teen Titans, Justice League, Infinity, and Power Man. A fine, original example of 1970s action comic art. George Tuska finished his studies at the National Academy School of Art at age 21. In 1939, he became John Terry's assistant on 'Scorchy Smith'. At the same time, he joined the graphic studios of Jerry Iger and Will Eisner. There he worked on several comic books, like 'Jungle', 'Wings', 'Planet Wonderworld' and 'Mystery Men'. In the 1940s, Tuska created the character 'Hercule' for Quality Comics and, as a member of Studio Chesler, he drew several episodes of 'Captain Marvel', 'Golden Arrow', 'Uncle Sam' and 'El Carim'. Tuska was mobilized during World War II, so he had to postpone his comic activities. After the war, he continued in the comic field with 'The Crime Does Not Pay', and as the illustrator on 'Scorchy Smith'. In 1959, he took over the daily and weekly 'Buck Rogers' pages, which he continued until 1967. In the late 1960s, Tuska started working for Marvel, where he contributed to the series 'Ghost Rider', 'Planet of the Apes', 'X-Men', 'Daredevil' and 'Iron Man'. He continued drawing superhero comics for DC, like 'Superman', 'Superboy' and 'Challengers of the Unknown'. In 1978, along with José Delbo, Paul Kupperberg and Martin Pasko, Tuska started a new version of the daily 'Superman' comic. T … [Click Below for Full Description]

Pastedown label on cover and spine. Boards are clean with slight wear at edges of spine. Boards are slightly bowed, but binding is square and tight. German-born Gustave Baumann was an influential American printmaker and key figure in the color woodcut revival. This series of prints, based upon pictographs found in Frijoles Canyon (within Bandolier National Monument) , illustrate the deep love and respect that Baumann felt for the Southwest. They clearly represent the pictographs, while still showing Baumann's hand. Primarily single-color, there are three tri-color prints included, including a monumental four-page fold-out image. The prints and images are further contextualized by lyrical essays from both Baumann and preeminent archaeologist Alfred Vincent Kidder.; Book; Wood block print; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 22 pp. [Attributes: First Edition; In Dust Jacke … [Click Below for Full Description]

Dick - GREEN
[ca. 1980s]. Five airbrushed paintings on quarter-inch plywood panels, each approximately 28" x 20" or slightly larger. One signed to verso. Most likely originally in two contiguous panels, in current form when acquired. Each is weathered and often heavily worn about the edges. Overall about good. A striking suite of advertising signage from an airbrush t-shirt artist named Dick Green (signed "Dick Green" and "Birdie" on verso of one). Region of origin is unknown, though likely Rust Belt given area of acquisition. Mounted metal hinges at outer margins and warnings against tailgating lettered above the illustrations strongly suggest these most likely doubled as rear doors for a trailer. Airbrush t-shirt artists were, and continue to be, staples of Midwestern and Southern fairs, swap meets, flea markets, car and truck rallies, and the like. The panels are undated, though style suggests 1980s, possibly earlier. Subjects include: a muscle car, a hotrod, a monster truck, three incarnations of the name "Jim," and what we can only describe as a giant parrot piloting a small airplane. A scarce group of vernacular advertising from an obviously skilled practitioner of this quintessential form of lowbrow art.

Stanisłav Szukalski
Los Angeles: Glenn Bray. This is a first edition, of "Troughful of Pearls / Behold!!! The Protong", published in 1980. The book is 12"x12" and about 180 pages. Comes with extras... -Double-sides playable Flexi-Disc (7", 33-⅓") record. -A protong translation/vocabulary sheet -A sheet with book information and an excerpt from Ben Hecht's autobiography "Child of the Century" -A sheet advertising for a signed print of Szukalski's "Kopernicus". Condition: Book: The cover is in Good condition. There is a triangle shaped rip in the cover of the Behold! Side, some small scratches and scuffs on both sides, edges of the cover have some nicks, the covers of the cover curls back a litte. The Troughful of Pearls cover appears to maybe have been glued back down. The Troughful side also has some spots of discoloration, maybe sun bleaching. The cover on the spine has 2 small segments that have fallen off. The Tfold where the spine meets the Behold side's cover shows lots of use and wear, but has not broken through and has plenty of life in it. The spine itself is in excellent condition regardless of the cover over it. The pages are in Excellent condition! No dog ears, no noticeable yellowing, no marks. The only page that does have marks and would not be considered in at least excellent condition is on the Troughful side, where the yellow printed image of "the Shaper" had its separate piece of paper become detached from the page. It looks like there may have been an attempt to reglue, but as time went on the glue dried and the image became detached once more. This darkish glue spot has left … [Click Below for Full Description]

Gogmagog Press.) COX (Morris)
Gogmagog Press, 1980. 14 drawings in black ink on thick art-paper, each signed and dated by the artist, ff. [14], 4to, the sheets loose as produced in a tissue wrap, inside a quarter grey morocco and patterned paper dropdown box by Angela James, lettered in gilt on the spine, fine. The original drawings for the second in Cox's 'Photocopy Library' series; the printed version an edition of 5 copies, produced in 1984. A series of drawings on a theme - a naked woman with a bird above - executed 'blind', in the early morning darkness of a week in late October 1980. As a record of the artist's trust in his processes, separate to his sight, these are superior to their printed equivalent - even though, as Colin Franklin considers, the line 'reproduces without loss in the copying machine', here the show-through from the ink on the verso of the sheets reveal points of pattern and hesitation that are thereby absent. Stanisław Szukalski
Los Angeles: Trougful Of Pearls Behold The Protong by Stanislaw Szukalski. First edition 1980. This book is a large 12" X 12", "69" format. The front, TROUGHFUL OF PEARLS, contains mostly sculpture and drawings, while the opposite side flipped over, is BEHOLD THE PROTONG which contains Szukalski's Zermatism drawings and theories. The book was edited and published by Glenn Bray and Lena Zwalve and 1200 copies were printed. Full original print, first edition - contains extras like posters, vinyl and Szukalski's language translation (you can see them on photographs added to the auction). Its not a partial reprint! Condition of book is nearly perfect - there is a little stamp of Millenium Library, who was original owner of this album, but it was withdrawn from their collection. You can see polish word on it „WYCOFANO" - it means withdraw. First edition like this one, is very very hard to find - it'll increase it's value over time. Apart from mentioned facts, book is really amazing and worth buying. Szukalski's art is an exceptional one and attention worthy - you can also see documentary about him on Netflix: https://www.netflix.com/title/8010955. [Attributes: First Edition]

The Cramps
The Cramps, [n.p.]. Pioneers of psychobilly, one of the first American garage punk bands, and part of the CBGB punk rock scene in New York, The Cramps wrote and performed in a film titled "Vampire From The Crypt" as promoted by this poster from 1980. Collaging photographs of the band by Alain de la Mata, (speculated to have originated from the band's "Garbageman" promotional video shoot) this poster was included in a photo spread created for The Face magazine's July 1980 issue, demonstrating their fascination with trash Americana and vintage monster movies in addition to the accompanying text from their own lyrics including the iconic song "Voodoo Idol," only released the following year. Borrowing from the comic book series, "Tales from the Crypt," The Cramps re-appropriate the ghoulish and fantastical style and reinvigorate it with their own punk aesthetic. With several cracks in the ink, and various small stains throughout. (30 x 22 ¼ in.) print backed with (23 3/8 x 31 in.) Japanese paper. Screenprint [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Karen ALLEN
London: [1980]. One APS, about 150 words. Addressed to noted poet and Irish-American musician Terence Winch. Postcard mild handling wear. Very good plus. WITH: Program and ticket from local Washington DC premier of RAIDERS. Fascinating postcard from actress Karen Allen to long-time friend Terence Winch, written from London while in the midst of filming RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK. In part: "I'm working on S. Spielberg's film 'The Raiders of the Lost Arc' [sic]. It's a 1936 cross between 'The African Queen' & "The Thief of Bagdad' - a wonderful, fun story, the likes of which I've never attempted and am feeling way out of my element in, but greatly challenged. I play a real tough dame who gets caught up in a search for the greatest religious relic of all time. I've been in a pit with 5000 real snakes for the past two weeks, the most important resources being a sense of humor and quick reflexes." Though undated, the reference to the iconic Well of Souls scene in RAIDERS dates this postcard to about July 1980 when the cast and crew were filming at Elstree Studios, early in the film's production. RAIDERS would go on to be the highest grossing film of 1981 and one of the most popular films of all time. It was nominated for multiple Academy Awards, inlcuding Best Picture and Director, and Allen won a Saturn Award for her portrayal of romantic lead Marion Ravenwood. A revealing document, penned during the making of one of the most famous scenes in a Hollywood classic.
