A stylish and uncommon Soviet agitprop poster celebrating the Greenham Common Women's Peace Camp. During the early 1980s, in response to Soviet arms stockpiling in Eastern Europe, NATO began siting nuclear-tipped American Cruise missiles in Western Europe. In turn, the Soviet Union supported and infiltrated the growing Western anti-nuke movements, and also regularly used peace propaganda at home which positioned the US and NATO as aggressors. This particular poster, depicting two women whose clasped hands smash the perimeter fence at Greenham Common, is a excellent example of the genre and in superb condition. It was designed by the noted poster artist Ruben Suryaninov, who graduated from the Art Academy of Latvia in 1956 and specialised in public health and social subjects. The Greenham Common protest was established in September of 1981 by the Welsh group Women for Life on Earth, who were opposed to the deployment of nuclear tipped cruise missiles at the site. What was initially planned as a single march became a permanent protest camp, one of the most significant and longest lasting women's protests of the 20th century. The Greenham Common camp had no hierarchy, and its nature defined by the thousands of individual women who visited when they could or lived permanently onsite for years. The activists engaged in non-violent resistance by disrupting movement in and out of the gates, cutting down portions of the fence, and trespassing on military property, and they endured frequent police raids, arrests, and evictions. A large number of the protesters were middle aged and o … [Click Below for Full Description]

1980. INSURED MEDIA MAIL SHIPPING IN A BOX MARILYNNE ROBINSON HOUSEKEEPING PAPERBOUND ADVANCE REVIEW COPY (PRECEDING HARDBOUND FIRST PRINTING) FSG (1980) Housekeeping is a novel by Marilynne Robinson, published in 1980. The novel was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction (which Robinson would eventually win for her second novel, Gilead), and awarded the PEN/Hemingway Award for best first novel. In 2003, the Guardian Unlimited named Housekeeping one of the 100 greatest novels of all time, describing the book as "Haunting, poetic story, drowned in water and light, about three generations of women." Time magazine also included the novel in its TIME 100 Best English-language Novels from 1923 to 2005. Ruthie narrates the story of how she and her younger sister Lucille are raised by a succession of relatives in the fictional town of Fingerbone, Idaho (some details are similar to Robinson's hometown, Sandpoint, Idaho). Eventually their aunt Sylvie (who has been living as a transient) comes to take care of them. At first the three are a close knit group, but as Lucille grows up she comes to dislike their eccentric lifestyle and moves out. When Ruthie's well-being is questioned by the courts, Sylvie returns to life on the road and takes Ruthie with her. The novel treats the subject of housekeeping, not only in the domestic sense of cleaning, but in the larger sense of keeping a spiritual home for one's self and family in the face of loss, for the girls experience a series of abandonments as they come of age. The events take place in an uncertain time, in that no dates are me … [Click Below for Full Description]

Crumb, Robert & Michael "Aitch" Price
Robert Crumb and Mike Price joined forces during the 1980s to produce a stage play, R. CRUMB COMIX: THE PLAY, with stage director Johnny Simons at Texas' Hip Pocket Theatre in Fort Worth. This archive contains related original correspondence from R Crumb to Mike Price in the form of 17 ALS's, 8 Postcards written and signed by R; Crumb, some 11,000 words, plus related production materials and ephemera, all housed in glassine sleeves in a 4-inch pin binder. The archive was assembled by Mike Price, a long time Fort Worth journalist, author, movie historian, comic book writer, and musician. Price was the musical director for the play COMIX under the auspices of his Cremo Studios. Most of the correspondence, in R. Crumb's unmistakable hand, is postmarked from his Winters, CA address (a few from France) along with related production materials including; the original soundtrack for the play, on two CD's, 9 Crumb unused postcards (circa 1980), 6 color slides from the play (some of R. Crumb), a prop from the play (a full-page negative of 'Uncle Bob'), a color photograph of Robert and Mike Price making music at the theatre, newspaper articles relating to the play, to 'Keep on Truckin', articles about Crumb's career, etc. Mike Price's musical knowledge and musicianship, his understanding of the whole cartoon landscape and history, old-time blues music, old time cartoons and what came before, his musical roots, all of these traits drew in Robert and made him part of THE PLAY. Most importantly it was the respect Crumb and Price had for each other that help illustrate the enthusiasm each … [Click Below for Full Description]

Salman Rushdie
Knopf, 1980. stained wraps, yet book still relatively sharp and tight; clean interior. Quite rare pre-publication uncorrected proof copy of the first American edition of Salman Rushdie's Man Booker Prize-winning (indeed, "Booker of Bookers") "Midnight's Children", published by Knopf in 1981 (though this proof lists the copyright as 1980). This is a nice association copy, in that it was distinguished essayist and critic Luc Sante's copy, and includes his ownership signature to the half-title page and ex-libris stamp to the title page. I've listed the book's overall condition as only good primarily due to the staining and soiling of the external card covers and page edges. That aside, the condition would be closer to very good: the edges and corners are still quite sharp and the binding is relatively tight. The covers have a small tear at the bottom front of the spine and a small cryptic note on the back panel. Internally, aside from the previous ownership marks mentioned, there is what appears to be a phone number written in pen at the bottom of the last blank page. Otherwise, the internal text pages and insides of the wrap covers are clean and free of marks. Laid in at the front is a cut out piece of paper containing what was likely intended to be some portion of the jacket copy. I believe this was at one time--if not originally--stapled to the inside cover. A nice copy of an edition hardly ever seen on the market, all the more unique for its ownership history. Please review all the images, and don't hesitate to send questions. [Attributes: First Edition]

Publisher
Miami, FL: Real Estate Data, Inc, 1980. Condition: Good +. Oblong atlas folio size, 581 pp., 17th Edition. While the western portion of Contra Costa County, California was fully developed by 1960, primarily due to industrial development during World War II, the central and eastern portions are now far different from how they appear in this atlas. This book of plat maps and aerial photos provides a glimpse back in time, to a time of orchards, ranches, large lots and a significantly smaller population. As an example of that growth, the City of Walnut Creek had a population of 2,500 in 1950, 9,900 in 1960 and today has approximately 65,000. The aerial views and open tracts of land presented in this atlas were opportunities for growth, much of it occuring because of the improvements to Interstate 680, SR 24 and the BART rail system which was begun in 1964. DESCRIPTION: Flexible black plastic boards, white paper title label to front board, pages attached to boards with five screw type metal posts; oblong atlas folio size (25" by 21"), pagination: note that publisher used lettering for the prelimary matter and plot numbers for the maps and aerial views, as follows: title page and blank verso [2 pp.], Explanation Page, "A" [1 p.], Index Map, "B" and "B-1" [2 pp.], Zoning Codes, "C" [1 p.], Street Index, "D" through "D-38" [39 pp.], section with maps and aerial views begins, with plot numbers from the Index Map being used on both the left-hand side and right-hand side, one the map and one the aerial view [536 pp.] CONDITION: An almost very good copy, complete and internally clean, … [Click Below for Full Description]

Tokyo: Seven Sha, 1980. Condition: Very good + / very good +. 4to. Black printed wraps in photographic dust jacket. In original red obi. Light shelfwear to jacket edges, mild scuffing to spine ends and corners. Interior unmarked. Very good plus or better. Classic photobook featuring 78 black and white photographs taken surreptitiously in Shinjuku and Yoyoki parks in Tokyo, both notorious for semi-public sexual activities. Cited in Martin Parr and Gerry Badger, The Photobook: A History, Volume II, as an example of a "'soft-core' pornographic photobook" that goes beyond its obvious function to offer "oblique but fascinating insights into Japanese society;" Yoshiyuki used an infared flash to photograph both participants and other observers without alerting them. Said by Parr & Badger to "generate a whole slew of questions concerning voyeurism, privacy and stalking [...] a brilliant piece of social documentation, catching perfectly the loneliness, sadness and desperation that so often accompany sexual or human relationships in a big, hard metropolis like Tokyo." Followed by an interview with the photographer by Nobuyoshi Araki. [Attributes: First Edition; In Dust Jacket]

London: Henry Sotheran Limited, 1980. See pictures. Very light wear. At bottom edge, small fray where leather meets cloth, both boards. Several small rub marks in leather at bottom right front corner leather (see pictures, almost undiscernible).Front board has two small spots of whitening to cloth (see pictures). Title page has imprint of previous owner, no text affected. Binder's stamp at front blank endpaper (Sotheran). Several small pencil notations at rear blank endpapers (binders numbers, and a price). Else, all tissue guards in place, etc.. Along fore-edge there are one or two very small marks when book is closed. Colonel Meinertzhagen's epic ornithology work, printed and bound by the venerable Sotheran's, in a large "Edition de Luxe". Bound in 3/4 leather, limited to 305 numbered and lettered copies (this is 283), and containing 19 tipped-in colored plates, 9 photographic plates, 53 text figures, and 35 text maps (with one at the rear, fold-out). Meinertzhagen claims, in the introduction, that no previous work had been produced on the Birds of Arabia, but this book is contentious; there are claims that he stole most of this work from an unpublished manuscript of George Bates. Meinertzhagen, himself, is quite the character. He claimed the Haversack Ruse as his invention, among other military exploits. His zoological achievements are under scrutiny, to the extant that his stuffed bird collection included stolen examples (from the Natural History Museum). Even his diary was found to have later, wishful, addendums; a notable example being that in 1934, when meeting Hitl … [Click Below for Full Description]
