Karen ALLEN
London: [1980]. One APS, about 150 words. Addressed to noted poet and Irish-American musician Terence Winch. Postcard mild handling wear. Very good plus. WITH: Program and ticket from local Washington DC premier of RAIDERS. Fascinating postcard from actress Karen Allen to long-time friend Terence Winch, written from London while in the midst of filming RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK. In part: "I'm working on S. Spielberg's film 'The Raiders of the Lost Arc' [sic]. It's a 1936 cross between 'The African Queen' & "The Thief of Bagdad' - a wonderful, fun story, the likes of which I've never attempted and am feeling way out of my element in, but greatly challenged. I play a real tough dame who gets caught up in a search for the greatest religious relic of all time. I've been in a pit with 5000 real snakes for the past two weeks, the most important resources being a sense of humor and quick reflexes." Though undated, the reference to the iconic Well of Souls scene in RAIDERS dates this postcard to about July 1980 when the cast and crew were filming at Elstree Studios, early in the film's production. RAIDERS would go on to be the highest grossing film of 1981 and one of the most popular films of all time. It was nominated for multiple Academy Awards, inlcuding Best Picture and Director, and Allen won a Saturn Award for her portrayal of romantic lead Marion Ravenwood. A revealing document, penned during the making of one of the most famous scenes in a Hollywood classic.

Salman Rushdie
Knopf, 1980. stained wraps, yet book still relatively sharp and tight; clean interior. Quite rare pre-publication uncorrected proof copy of the first American edition of Salman Rushdie's Man Booker Prize-winning (indeed, "Booker of Bookers") "Midnight's Children", published by Knopf in 1981 (though this proof lists the copyright as 1980). This is a nice association copy, in that it was distinguished essayist and critic Luc Sante's copy, and includes his ownership signature to the half-title page and ex-libris stamp to the title page. I've listed the book's overall condition as only good primarily due to the staining and soiling of the external card covers and page edges. That aside, the condition would be closer to very good: the edges and corners are still quite sharp and the binding is relatively tight. The covers have a small tear at the bottom front of the spine and a small cryptic note on the back panel. Internally, aside from the previous ownership marks mentioned, there is what appears to be a phone number written in pen at the bottom of the last blank page. Otherwise, the internal text pages and insides of the wrap covers are clean and free of marks. Laid in at the front is a cut out piece of paper containing what was likely intended to be some portion of the jacket copy. I believe this was at one time--if not originally--stapled to the inside cover. A nice copy of an edition hardly ever seen on the market, all the more unique for its ownership history. Please review all the images, and don't hesitate to send questions. [Attributes: First Edition]

Keizo KITAJIMA
Tokyo: Paroru-sha, 1980. Condition: Near fine in stapled photo-illustrated wrappers. First Edition. Stapled quarto. The last of four volumes of Kitajima's Photo Mail from Okinawa, published to coincide with his shows at the Camp Gallery, founded by Daido Moriyama after the dissolution of Workshop, and predating Kitajima's work in book form. This gritty magazine, published in black and white on glossy paper, shows the evolution of Japanese photography out of the Provoke era. While Kitajima retains some of Provoke's hallmarks, his emphasis is more on people and less on abstraction. Kitajima's images of a seedy Okinawa evoke a Punk or even Hip Hop sensibility, and form the genesis of the New York work for which he is best known. [Attributes: First Edition]

John Dee - Meric Casaubon
1980. This is simply the finest copy of A True and Faithful Relation I've ever seen. I have owned this copy since the 1980s. I have kept it protected and safe for many years. This is for the most avid collector who understands how valuable a fine copy like this is. It comes with the original box case for the book. This is the reprint of the 1659 edition. I will not go into too much detail here but am open for all questions (serious inquiries only) and can send more pictures if required. I will protect this book very well for shipping (free) anywhere in the USA. Number 34 out of 500 total copies. This book even smells good. I will also include the book, Key to the Latin of John Dee's Spiritual Diaries (signed and dedicated) by Stephen Skinner (hard back) as well at no extra cost. This is your only chance to get a fine copy like this. I've never seen one on Ebay in such good condition. An Excellent present for the holidays. My apologies for the poor lighting in my pictures. As stated above, I can take more pictures (with the flash on this time) if you require more. This book contains original John Dee experiments with angelic communication source materials. This material was later modified by the Golden Dawn and others. In my experience it's better to have the original source material on Enochian magic for yourself to study. You will not find a finer copy anywhere. I will also protect the shipment with insurance and a signature for receipt of the book will be required. I will probably raise the price soon so act fast. Everson, William; Tom Killion; Les Ferriss; Richard Bigus; Labyrinth Editions
Torrance: Labyrinth Editions, 1980. First Edition. Unbound. Very Good. Woodcuts By Tom Killion. Folio - between 12" - 15" Tall. Unbound proof, believed to be unique, of this notable collaboration between printer Richard Bigus, artist Tom Killion, and William Everson, who had taught both of them printing at UC Santa Cruz. It was acquired directly from William Everson himself. This is what appears to be a final production proof, exquisitely printed on reverse fold Japanese paper, collated and complete at [52] pages, with the original prints by Tom Killion. It is signed in pencil on the colophon by Killion beneath his print, and in ink below by Everson. It is un-numbered, nor is it marked "A/P". Unlike the edition, this copy was never stab-bound, and is present in unbound sheets. It is perfectly printed, as was always the case with Bigus' work. While this is suitable for a custom binding, it would also be ideal for exhibition, as the entire work could be shown (since the edition was intended to be bound reverse-fold, the sheets are printed on one side only). It is in very good condition, with only very slight wear; several minor smudges, and some spotting to some leaves which may have been present in the paper when made.

1980. Condition: Like New. Excellent condition. Front and back covers are in great shape. No marks, writing or underling inside the report itself. Are you a huge Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger fan? If you are, this report is like a delightful walk down memory lane. This listing is for a super rare 1980 Berkshire Hathaway Annual Report. As has often been said, these Berkshire Hathaway annual reports, including the Chairman's Letter written by Warren Buffett, are pure solid gold loaded with investing wisdom. This one is different however. It's so old the address on the back cover isn't Kiewit Plaza in Omaha as we're accustomed to seeing, but 97 Cove Street in New Bedford, Massachusetts. This copy is used but in excellent condition. The front and back covers are in great shape. Inside the report is totally clean with no underlinings, marks or writing on it. No bends and staples are solid! Your best chance to find a copy better than this is probably sitting in a vault in Kiewit Plaza! 56 total pages, which also includes the 1980 annual report letters from Charlie Munger for Blue Chips Stamps (read up on See's Candies, Buffalo Evening News, Precision Steel and Pinkerton's!) and Louis Vincenti for Wesco Financial. Makes an incredible addition to your Berkshire annual report collection. PLUS... as a wonderful bonus, you also get with your 1980 Berkshire Hathaway annual report the Notice of Annual Meeting of Stockholders (the meeting was held at the offices of National Indemnity on Harney Street in Omaha), and two quarterly interim reports, one dated October 3, 1981 and the othe … [Click Below for Full Description]

Benda, Václav
Prague, 1980. Octavo (20 × 13 cm). Original red cloth binding; photographic frontis portrait; [2], 2-152 leaves of carbon copy typescript to rectos (second or third copy, easily legible), with very occasional hand-written corrections. Boards lightly stained; still very good. This samizdat volume gathers a selection of letters written to his family from prison by the Czech dissident activist Václav Benda (1946-1999), who developed a highly influential concept of the "parallel polis" (paralelní polis) that would inspire Václav Havel and others. Like Havel, Benda was arrested in 1979 and remained imprisoned until 1983, during which period he wrote the present letters. In addition to daily life in prison, they reflect the evolution of his philosophical and theological ideas. Benda's wife, to whom the letters were addressed, copied and published a selection in four volumes while her husband was still imprisoned. The present edition is either one of these volumes or a further copy. The preface ("Místo úvodu: Kdo je Václav Benda") is signed "-mp-." This edition does not appear to be in KVK, OCLC. Le Sage, Alain René
Chez Antoine Ferrand, 1980. Very good in contemporary calf bindings. My own Rare set of books purchased from a rare book collector in the early 1980s. Due to downsizing they are now up for sale. The Adventures of Gil Blas of Santillane. 4 volumes 1809 in full 19th century calf gilt with 24 engraved plates. I would say they are in very good condition. They are bound in gilt calf. Tome 4 Has a piece missing on the spine, and Tomes 1 and 2 have fine cracks on either side of the leather, but it is not separated. They are all tightly bound, no loose pages, with marbled ends. Tome 2 and 4 has a bit of rubbing to the boards but adds to their character. The engravings have slight foxing, however, most of the pages are free of foxing, and appear quite bright. I am including photographs and will list further later on. But please feel free to ask for more, and i will do my best to get them to you. They are in french, and untranslated, All books have a label inscribed Henry G Hayter, whom I believe, was the chairman of the Shanghai printing company. Please check photos and ask for additional ones - as these make up the listing, and are the books you will receive. The end papers are all Dark brown and are not cracked in any volume. There are no library stamps and no markings to the text. Each book is 9.5 inches x 6 inches (24.25cm x 14.25 cm) All overseas bidders please contact before bidding. Baumann, Gustave; Kidder, Alfred Vincent (Foreword)
William & Victoria Dailey, 1980. Baumann, Gustave. Limited Edition. Hardcover. No. 90 of 250, octavo size, [43] pp. Fine / fine. Gustave Baumann (1881-1971) was a German-American printmaker and painter, one of the leading figures in the revival of colour woodcuts; he spent a great part of his life in Santa Fe, New Mexico, creating work depicting southwestern landscapes, pueblo life, and ancient Native American petroglyphs. This volume is a collection of woodcuts by Baumann, copied from the pictographs found in the caves on the Pajarito Plateau of northern New Mexico, dating from 1150-1500 CE. Baumann faithfully recreates the pictographs from the caves in woodcuts; the pictographs have, over time, been defaced by wind and rain and by the vandalism of tourists, leaving these prints to serve as an archeological record. The woodcuts are printed from the original blocks cut by Baumann in 1939, and the woodcuts on the dust jacket are printed here for the first time. Included also is a foreword by Alfred Vincent Kidder (1885-1963), a leading American archaeologist specialising in the southwestern U.S. and Mesoamerica, who offers insight into the archaeological ramifications of the caves and pictographs. This publication was printed for William and Victoria Dailey, renowned antiquarian bookdealers and owners of the Press of the Pegacycle Lady, by Patrick Reagh (b.1948), son of Los Angeles photographer William Reagh, who has printed numerous fine press editions at his own imprint. ___DESCRIPTION: Full black cloth with yellow woodcut designs, title in black inside a white rectangle w … [Click Below for Full Description]

Used with wear and tear. Heinemann 1980. Signing events were rare in those days, not like today. These early signed copies were usually to friends and family, before they were even released into book stores. You can tell by the style of signature and handwriting what are early signed copies. This was however a much later signed book and unique for being line-signed Aside from its fine dust jacket which is the finest we've ever seen on this title, that it is signed with a line for the book makes it unique. Note that the Heinemann titles are the most scarce, especially in good condition as they print runs were smaller. The dust jackets were made of cheaper paper and coating. Wilbur wasn't yet a household name. In fact the later titles even signed, have no value unless in mint condition. We had only two of these signed like this. I borrowed line-signing from other authors events as a means to add more writing, ensuring it wasn't a forgery signature. Sadly forgers will arise whenever money can be made from a famous person's signature. It very much personalizes the book without making unique to one person only. I discussed with Wilbur choices of lines and he personally selected this one. However, Niso objected to line-signing and wouldn't allow him to sign anymore after my selections. These were a personal favor to me. I'm not aware he's ever done this for any other fan since making these line-signed books one of a kind. We are selling a special Wilbur collection on behalf of a client. Wilbur will be releasing his memoirs this Spring so now it the time to invest again. From earl … [Click Below for Full Description]

Colonel R. Meinertzhagen
London: Henry Sotheran Limited, 1980. See pictures. Very light wear. At bottom edge, small fray where leather meets cloth, both boards. Several small rub marks in leather at bottom right front corner leather (see pictures, almost undiscernible).Front board has two small spots of whitening to cloth (see pictures). Title page has imprint of previous owner, no text affected. Binder's stamp at front blank endpaper (Sotheran). Several small pencil notations at rear blank endpapers (binders numbers, and a price). Else, all tissue guards in place, etc.. Along fore-edge there are one or two very small marks when book is closed. Colonel Meinertzhagen's epic ornithology work, printed and bound by the venerable Sotheran's, in a large "Edition de Luxe". Bound in 3/4 leather, limited to 305 numbered and lettered copies (this is 283), and containing 19 tipped-in colored plates, 9 photographic plates, 53 text figures, and 35 text maps (with one at the rear, fold-out). Meinertzhagen claims, in the introduction, that no previous work had been produced on the Birds of Arabia, but this book is contentious; there are claims that he stole most of this work from an unpublished manuscript of George Bates. Meinertzhagen, himself, is quite the character. He claimed the Haversack Ruse as his invention, among other military exploits. His zoological achievements are under scrutiny, to the extant that his stuffed bird collection included stolen examples (from the Natural History Museum). Even his diary was found to have later, wishful, addendums; a notable example being that in 1934, when meeting Hitl … [Click Below for Full Description]

(Superman) Tuska, George
D.C. Comics, Inc, 1980. 1 vols. 16 x 22 inches. Fine. A vigorous multi-panel drawing, by Tuska, fully lettered, of the exploits of the first and greatest superhero. Tuska specialized in particularly intense action scenes; he also illustrated such series as Green Lantern, Teen Titans, Justice League, Infinity, and Power Man. A fine, original example of 1970s action comic art. George Tuska finished his studies at the National Academy School of Art at age 21. In 1939, he became John Terry's assistant on 'Scorchy Smith'. At the same time, he joined the graphic studios of Jerry Iger and Will Eisner. There he worked on several comic books, like 'Jungle', 'Wings', 'Planet Wonderworld' and 'Mystery Men'. In the 1940s, Tuska created the character 'Hercule' for Quality Comics and, as a member of Studio Chesler, he drew several episodes of 'Captain Marvel', 'Golden Arrow', 'Uncle Sam' and 'El Carim'. Tuska was mobilized during World War II, so he had to postpone his comic activities. After the war, he continued in the comic field with 'The Crime Does Not Pay', and as the illustrator on 'Scorchy Smith'. In 1959, he took over the daily and weekly 'Buck Rogers' pages, which he continued until 1967. In the late 1960s, Tuska started working for Marvel, where he contributed to the series 'Ghost Rider', 'Planet of the Apes', 'X-Men', 'Daredevil' and 'Iron Man'. He continued drawing superhero comics for DC, like 'Superman', 'Superboy' and 'Challengers of the Unknown'. Gregory Corso
1980. A two-part poem penned by Gregory Corso for his friend Fred Martin, Managing Editor at New Directions. Apocryphally at least, Corso "writ out" the poem for Martin at a bibulous evening at one of New York's watering holes. In his time at New Directions, Martin worked with Corso, as well as Allen Ginsberg, Tennessee Williams, William Carlos Williams, and Lawrence Ferlinghetti. "Metaphor" is a variation on Corso's poem "Piffle", published in 1980 -- the same year the poem was "writ out for Fred Martin." Shortly thereafter, following the assassination of John Lennon, the poem was reworked and retitled "For John Lennon." Corso's practice seems to have been constantly to re-write, revise, and recycle his poems, perhaps to fit the occasion.
