Quyle, Paul (1925-2011) and Joyce Quyle.
Murphys, California: 1960s-1980s. About 60 letterpress flyers and other ephemera and metal type.Quyle, started printing in the 1950s when he and his wife, Joyce, needed labels to put on items for sale in their Murphys shop. He acquired a simple hand press and set to work, quickly realizing that the work activity was going to become a hobby that would morph into a passion. His press, made in 1825, was for a time the oldest iron press in the United States, until an acquaintance of Quyle's found one that was one year older. Between the two printers and their presses, hand-press scholars were able to solve what had been a mystery: The bar that pulls the press was attached to one side in 1825 and on the other side a year earlier, so now it is known when that change was made.In addition to the Columbian, Quyle had 27 other hand presses in storage. He is a member of the Moxon Chappel, a group of printers who meet to share printing projects. Quyle has been a member for 35 years, and said the group consists of amateurs and professionals who have held meetings all over the United States and in Egypt and Mexico.

Toole, John Kennedy; Foreword by Walker Percy
Louisiana State University Press, Baton Rouge, 1980. First edition of the author's Pulitzer Prize-winning masterpiece. Octavo, original cloth. Signed by Walker Percy on the title page, who wrote the foreword and upon his insistence had it published. Fine in near fine first issue dust jacket with light rubbing and shelfwear. Jacket illustration by Ed Lindlof. A very nice example, uncommon signed. "A masterwork . . . the novel astonishes with its inventiveness . . . it is nothing less than a grand comic fugue" (The New York Times Book Review). The book's passage to success began in 1976 when John Kennedy Toole's mother Thelma, using a walker, hobbled into the office of the novelist Walker Percy at Loyola University. She was followed by a chauffeur carrying a manuscript that she told Mr. Percy was a ''masterpiece.'' Percy agreed to read it. He became entranced and decided that the novel was ''a major achievement, a huge comic-satiric-tragic one-of-a-kind rendering of life in New Orleans.'' After some more publishers rejected the book, Louisiana State University Press agreed to take a chance with a first printing of just 2,500 copies. It sold about 50,000 copies in hard cover and nearly 600,000 in paperback within three years of publication. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]

Bernhard Faeroyvik; Oystein Faeroyvik
Conway Maritime Press, 1980. H/B 143 pages, condition is very good, this is an ex library book with the usual stamps. When Bernhard Faeroyvik was born in West Norway at the end of the nineteenth century, sail and oars still dominate the local community's way of life. By the end of 1920s, however, the traditional inshore craft were being abandoned in favour of the new types of motor-driven vessels and the old boatbuilding skills were dying out. Faeroyvik realised that he was witnessing the end of an era and so set out to record these rapidly-disappearing craft. The enormous amount of archival material which he collected has now been sympathetically edited by Arne Christensen who has produced a fascinating and lively history of the boats of his coast and of the folk who used them. Faeroyvik's meticulous scale drawings, detailed enough to satisfy the most particular modelmaker, together with his descriptions of the history of each boat, make this book a unique and invaluable record for all maritime history enthusiasts and indeed for anyone with a love of small boats. Toole, John Kennedy / Foreword by Walker Percy
Louisiana State University Press, Baton Rouge, LA, 1980. First US edition, first printing in the correct first issue jacket with a printed price of $12.95, the long blurb on the rear panel by Walker Percy (with no other blurbs), and no quote from the Chicago Sun-Times at the top of that panel. What this copy has going for it is condition: the dustjacket has the least wear of that on any copy I have ever seen: that is to say, almost none at all (three TINY corner rubs, no missing paper - that is all that can be detected with the naked eye, I believe). The jacket is, of course, unclipped - it is also uncreased and completely unfaded: the lovely shade of blue (not the washed-out, almost white shade seen on so many copies) on the front panel title is duplicated by that on the spine - the same shade. The book is fine as well: crisp and clean with sharp corners and pristine beige cloth covers. The boards have a very slight outward splay (common to many copies of this book that I have seen), but virtually unnoticeable with the jacket on. Bonus! With the purchase of this book I will include a vintage Big Chief Tablet (in fine, unused condition) - the same type of tablet used by the unforgettable protagonist of the book, Ignatius J. Reilly, to write his "world view". [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Umberto Eco
Bompiani, 1980. Boldly signed by the author in red ink on the title page. The book is near fine with only the smallest touch of abrasion to the top left of the front board. The jacket is very good with some traces of thumbing and a tiny tear to the bottom of the spine. Overall, a beautiful copy, quite scarce to find signed. Gebrüder Mann Berlin 1980, Seite 276, Nr. 345. Provenienz: Sammlung Rehmert, versteigert bei Karl&Faber in München am 11. November 2016.
