Waiting for the Barbarians - SIGNED by the Nobel Laureate

Secker and Warburg, 1980 A first edition, first printing published by Secker and Warburg in 1980. A near fine book with a trace of spotting to the top of the page block. One neat name and date to the front endpaper. SIGNED without dedication to the title page by the author. In a near fine clipped wrapper with the usual fading to the spine encroaching a little on to the rear panel. A very rare book and especially so signed by the Nobel laureate.         THE NUMBER OF THE BEAST .

Fawcett Columbine [1980]., New York - Octavo, boards. First U.S. edition. An homage to and parody of the Mars novels of Edgar Rice Burroughs, written in a pulpy 1930s style, based on the premise of numerous parallel worlds created by the act of imagining them. "An amazing farrago of SF and fantasy in which various fictional worlds intersect and the characters come to realize that they themselves are equally unreal. Lazarus Long (from TIME ENOUGH FOR LOVE) and Jubal Harshaw (from STRANGER IN A STRANGE LAND) turn up again, as do many other familiar figments. It's all very jokey on the surface, but a desperate nightmare of solipsism seems to lie below. Dreadful old rubbish: one of Heinlein's worst." - Pringle, The Ultimate Guide to Science Fiction, second edition (1995), p. 261. Sargent, British and American Utopian Literature, 1516-1985, Additions. A fine copy in fine dust jacket. (#155373) [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Kenzaburo Oé (prix Nobel de littérature)- Michel. Photographies Originales

Par l'auteur. A pair of original black and white photographic portraits taken and printed by Marc Trivier. The two photographs are, respectively : - An original photographic portrait of Kenzaburo Oé in 1987, 7 seven years before he became Nobel prize Nobel and two years before he received Europalia prize. - An original photographic portrait of Michel taken in the psychiatric hospital in Liège in 1980. Artists, strangers, madmen, abbatoirs, trees - Marc Trivier photographed each of his subjects with the same interrogative intensity. All his photographs are in the same square format, simple and confined, with no retouching or alteration of the framing, and seem less to show off a subject - famous or unknown, in or out of power, dead or alive - than to seek out a presence. "What interested me was not simply photographing a body or a face, but the curious situation of someone taking a photo of someone else." In placing his portraits of artists side by side with a divergent pair, Trivier denudes the work of its effect and reveals the enigmatic nakedness of the photographic body. "In his cosmogony every thing, every being - vegetable, mineral or human - deserves the same respect. "In his cosmogony every thing, every being - vegetable, mineral or human - deserves the same respect. For all are subject to the same iron law: solitude" (Luc Desbenoit in Télérama, 05/03/2011, on the occasion of Marc Trivier's retrospective at the Maison Européenne de la Photographie).Unsigned silver prints, like most of Trivier's work.         Galley Sheets for VALIS, with Typed Letters Signed

, 1980. 1980. Long galley sheets for Dick's novel VALIS (Vast Active Living Intelligence System), with two typed letters signed to Alan Ryan, fellow science fiction writer and editor of the religiously-themed speculative fiction anthology Perpetual Light. Both letters are dated March 13, 1980, with one being for private reading, thanking Ryan for his review of Dick's The Golden Man and discussing VALIS; the second being for Ryan to show to others, espousing enthusiasm for his planned anthology. The VALIS galley sheets for this 1981 Bantam paperback original are dated 6-23-80: approximately 68 sheets of 25" in length, age-toned with minimal edge wear, in a custom folding chemise and slipcase. Casual inspection revealed one textual difference from the published version. Near fine; the letters are folded in thirds, else fine. Also laid in is a very good copy of the proof of the Bantam covers, which differs from the final version by virtue of the absence of the Bantam logo on the front cover. A very scarce issue of the book that would become the capstone to Dick's literary career. Long galleys such as these are seldom produced in more than a couple of copies, and very seldom turn up for books that were issued as paperback originals. It's ironic that Dick's culminating novel, which transcends science fiction's usual boundaries, would be issued as a paperback original: Dick had so many books issued as paperback originals in the 1950s and 60s, before his books came to be regularly published in hardcover, that the Science Fiction Writers of America named an award after him, the Philip K. Dick Award, for the best SF novel issued as a paperback original. Dick spent the last several years of his life striving for recognition as more than a science fiction writer, and VALIS could have been that break-out novel, had it not reverted him to his former identity as a writer of paperback originals. A rare issue of a major Dick novel, along with two very revealing letters to a fellow writer and colleague. As far as we can tell, unique. First Edition. No Binding. Near Fine.

Galley Sheets for VALIS, with Typed Letters Signed

No Binding. Near Fine.
