        Untitled [From Truisms]

[New York]: Jenny Holzer, 1980. 13 1/2 x 20" broadside, offset printed. One of the best known posters from her Truisms series, which the artist began in 1977 and posted and distributed around New York City. A pencilled note at the verso that this copy was from the Times Square Show, and the account of the show at the Times Square Revisited website by Tom Otterness notes that Holzer sold Truism posters at the event. Folded once, with some very light handling creases to extremities, else fine.

EIGHT WOOD ENGRAVINGS ON A THEME OF PAN.

Northampton: Pennyroyal Press, 1980. 6 1/2 x 10. 29 pages, 3 leaves. Navy cloth, paper spine label. Extra label laid in. Fine. A Patron's copy, inscribed by Moser to Mimi and Arnold [Elkind]. Each of the engravings specially signed by Moser. (The edition of 130 copies did not have signed engravings.) Also signed by the calligrapher Betse Curtis, the binder Barbara Blumenthal, and the printer Harold McGrath. Despite the title, there are 7 engravings. The original binding design called for a large triangular label on the upper cover; this label was to have the 8th engraving. After the edition was printed, the binding design changed. Text is six epigrams from the Anthologia Graeca, which Moser loosely translates in his afterword. Set in Goudy Greek (12pt. to 36pt.) in 3 or 4 colors, and punctuated with original brush calligraphy. Printed on handmade Japanese Etching paper; engravings on sheets of Sekishu. A delightful book. Pennyroyal Checklist 24.

        Amadeus.

London: Andre Deutsch, 1980. First edition of the playwright's classic work. Octavo, original cloth. Lengthily signed by the author on the front free endpaper, "What use, after all is Man, if not to teach God His lessons?" Peter Shaffer." Near fine in a near fine dust jacket. Amadeus is a play by Peter Shaffer, which gives a highly fictionalized account of the lives of the composers Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Antonio Salieri. First performed in 1979, Amadeus was inspired by a short 1830 play by Alexander Pushkin called Mozart and Salieri (which was also used as the libretto for an opera of the same name by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov in 1897). After being presented successfully at the Royal National Theatre, London in 1979, the play moved to the West End followed by Broadway. Amadeus won the 1981 Tony Award for Best Play. It was adapted by Shaffer for the 1984 Academy Award-winning film of the same name, directed by Milos Forman. The film was nominated for 53 awards and received 40, which included eight Academy Awards, four BAFTA Awards, four Golden Globes, and a Directors Guild of America award. As of 2016, it is the most recent film to have more than one nomination in the Academy Award for Best Actor category. In 1998, the American Film Institute ranked Amadeus 53rd on its 100 Years...100 Movies list.

Alan Paton regarding Dutch settlement in South Africa: "when you came here we had the land and you had the bible, now we have the bible and you have the land"

Natal, South Africa, 1980-1981. 7.75" x 11.75". "Archive comprised of four pale blue airmail combination letter and cachet TLS signed "Alan Paton" or "Al" in blue or black ball point pen, each written in Natal, South Africa to either "Mrs. Lyons" or "Sylvia" between December 1980 and December 1981. All with canceled RSA stamps and sticker listing sender's address as "A.S. Paton, P.O. Box 278, Hillcrest, 3650 Natal, South Africa". December 2nd 1980 letter also briefly annotated in blue ball point pen. Letters measuring 7.75"" x 11.75"" are mostly in very good condition, some with rough or slightly torn edges, one with small tear, all with ghost tape impression at center. Some excerpts can be found below:December 2nd 1980"My house was not 'off limits' and I never experienced house arrest. This is the most grievous punishment that this government can impose. I suppose you know that it is imposed by a Minister of State and the victim has no appeal to the courts. Something which would not happen in the United States. Less serious than house arrest is what is called 'banning', which means that you are confined to a certain area, that you are not allowed to attend any gathering, that nothing you say can be published, that you may not enter any court or dock area or school ... I did however lose my passport for 10 years ... I was very interested in your story that 'We Dutch came here with the bible in one hand and a rifle in the other'. There is another equally witty saying, attributed to a black man. He said 'when you came here we had the land and you had the bible, now we have the bible and you have the land'".April 20th 1981"I of course follow the American news very closely and am a reader of the 'Christian Science Monitor'. I don't take quite such a grim view of Reagan's administration as many Democrats must do ... I am very lucky to enjoy good health, but at the moment I am in a kind of limbo, which always happens when one finishes a book and is waiting for its publication".September 22nd 1981"Thank you for your offer to send me something from New York. That is very generous of you, but it is also extremely risky to make such an offer ... I shall write 35 words on the subject of 'How the Rich and Famous Economise', and will put them at the end of this letter. I am not rich, but I am not poor. I suppose I am famous, but not in any high category ... "December 22nd 1981"It is not in the least risky for you to send me anything, nor is it in the least risky for me to receive anything. It might have been so twenty years ago. You ask what I would like you to send. Well what I really fancy is a brand new Boeing 747 with an Executive Suite!"Alan Paton (1903-1988) was a teacher, author, and activist celebrated for his 1946 work Cry, the Beloved Country, a work published just before the rise of the separatist National Party in South Africa. Paton, who vehemently opposed apartheid, organized an alternative political party called the Liberal Party of South Africa. He was punished for openly opposing government policy in various ways; in his December 2nd 1980 letter, for example, he refers to how the government had confiscated his passport (this upon his return from New York in 1960). Paton addresses his curtailed rights frankly in his correspondence, even going so far as to juxtapose South African policy with American. Sylvia Lyons was the widow of Leonard Lyons (1906-1976), a popular serial columnist who produced 12,000 mostly arts-related newspaper columns over a forty-year period published in the New York Post under the heading "The Lyon's Den". Leonard and Sylvia Lyons were a dynamic couple who knew dozens of actors, musicians, writers, and Hollywood personalities through Leonard's work as a journalist. Paton is thus assured of Sylvia's interest in literary topics, commenting on popular books of the early 80s -- such as the novels of James Michener -- as well as recent book review projects. Paton published his third novel Ah, But Your Land is Beautiful in 1981, the same time that most of this correspondence was written."

All five are in excellent, fine condition having been stored in removable plastic coverings. They are all presented with their inserts and additional publications including the first four chapters of Maus in their original formats bound into issues 2-5. Number 4 contains a vinyl flexi-disc entitled "Reagan Speaks for Himself". Volume 1 Number 1: The Graphix Magazine of Postponed Suicides, Fall 1980. pp.36; Number 2: The Graphix Magazine for Damned Intellectuals, 1980. pp. 36. Number 3: The Graphix Magazine that Lost its Faith In Nihilism, 1981. pp. 52. Number 4: The Graphix Magazine for your Bomb Shelter's Coffee Table, 1982. pp.44. Number 5: The Graphix Magazine of Abstract Depressionism, 1983. pp. 52. RAW was a seminal alternative magazine of the 1980s. It ran for eleven issues ending in 1991 with its final number, High Culture for Lowbrows a title which captures the essence of RAW. It presented serious and angry social, political and historical analysis in an anarchic cartoon format suggesting something of Pop Art (although Mouly claimed to have been influenced by the Russian Constructivists). RAW also drew on European high art but presented it in a comic strip format. Its marriage of high and low, the intellectual and the popular was instrumental in creating the atmosphere of cultural fluidity which we now accept as a post-modern norm.

Fasciculus geomanticus, in quo varia variorum opera geomantica continentur. Verona [= Frankfurt am Main], 1687. With5 (of 6) large folding letterpress tables, 1 double-page engraved folding plate with 2 engraved illustrations, and some woodcut illustrations and numerous letterpress geomantic figures in text. With: (2) Tabulae geomanticae, seu liber singularis de tribus ultimis ex antiquo manuscripto de anno MDXXXV. Iam primo luci datus, annexis duabus tabellis huic studio mirè inservientibus, caeteroquin utilibus & jucundis. Frankfurt am Main, Johann David Zunner, 1693. With 2 letterpress folding tables following text, and nearly 200 pages of letterpress tables with geomantic figures. 2 works in 1 volume, bound in reverse order. 8vo. Contemporary vellum.

Caillet 4035; S. Skinner, Terrestrial astrology: divination by geomancy (1980); Thorndike VIII, p. 481-482. First edition of a collection of three texts on geomancy, a divination system with Arabian origins. Geomancy comes from the Ancient Greek "geômanteía", a translation of the Arabic term " 'ilm al-raml", the "science of the sand". It includes texts by the English physician and astrologer Robert Fludd (1574-1637), the French physician Henri de Pisis and the Arab Alfakini. It is preceded by its separately published supplement Tabulae geomanticae, together forming "the standard printed Latin source for the rules of geomantic practice ... a handbook and compendium not since rivalled for clarity and completeness" (Skinner)."Fludd ... tried to present [geomancy] as a science of intellectual soul in which intellectual rays emanated from the mind to mundane affairs and then returned to the center with tidings of the future. ... Fludd's treatise is immediately followed by a longer geomancy by H. de Pisis ... divided into three parts devoted respectively to the theory, practice and questions taken from previous authors. Fludd is cited more than once, also Arabic authors like Geber and Aomar" (Thorndike). The last treatise contain the geomantic questions of the Arab Alfakini, son of Abizarch, based on a manuscript from 1535 and published here for the first time. The manuscript was a Latin translation by Plato of Tivoli (fl. first half of the 12th century), known for his translations of Arabic texts. A supplement to this last text, containing almost 200 pages of tables, is bound first.Lacking one letterpress folding table in the main work. Browned throughout, as usual, some occasional smudges, a few tears along the folds of the folding tables, and some wormholes in the first two leaves, resulting in a small hole in the gutter of the title-page, otherwise internally still good. Binding soiled and with crudely restored spine.

[Original Ink and Color Wash Artist's Book:] SACRIS ERRABAT IN UMBRIS [caption title]

[Florence: The Artist, 1980. [24] leaves. Oblong small octavo (11 x 12 cm). Punched at left and bound with leather ties. Very near fine. A lovely, unique artist's book by the visual poet, consisting of exquisite drawings in black ink and color wash on tissue paper, glued to hand-cut leaves of stiff card, some of which in turn bear underdrawing that enhances the composite image by its visibility through the tissue. The title leaf includes the manuscript title within a frame of textured white pigment. The artist lined through the title (which is repeated on the colophon), and a quarter-sized blob of resin, sealed with clear acrylic (?) overlays the center of it. Luciano Caruso ... "was a visual poet whose artist books integrated intricate handwritten words, often illegible but visual appealing with constructivist, abstract or semi-realistic images. Many of these books had pages that were stiffened with thick white paint. He staged many artist book exhibitions in Italy, edited a series of reprints of Italian Futurist publication and published and edited limited editions of visual poetry drawings, prints, booklets, and collages by himself and other poets" - Sackner Collection, online. Oddly, references conflict as to the year of his death.

Photo Mail From Okinawa: Play Map of GT Street, No 3

Tokyo: Paroru-sha, 1980. Near fine in stapled photo-illustrated wrappers.. First Edition. Stapled quarto. The third of four volumes of Kitajima's Photo Mail from Okinawa, published to coincide with his shows at the Camp Gallery, founded by Daido Moriyama after the dissolution of Workshop, and predating Kitajima's work in book form. This gritty magazine, published in black and white on glossy paper, shows the evolution of Japanese photography out of the Provoke era. While Kitajima retains some of Provoke's hallmarks, his emphasis is more on people and less on abstraction. Kitajima's images of a seedy Okinawa evoke a Punk or even Hip Hop sensibility, and form the genesis of the New York work for which he is best known.

It is preceded by its separately published supplement Tabulae geomanticae , together forming "the standard printed Latin source for the rules of geomantic practice … a handbook and compendium not since rivalled for clarity and completeness" (Skinner)."Fludd ... tried to present [geomancy] as a science of intellectual soul in which intellectual rays emanated from the mind to mundane affairs and then returned to the center with tidings of the future. ... Fludd's treatise is immediately followed by a longer geomancy by H. de Pisis … divided into three parts devoted respectively to the theory, practice and questions taken from previous authors.

        THE NUMBER OF THE BEAST

New York: Fawcett Columbine, [1980].. Octavo, boards. First U.S. edition. An homage to and parody of the Mars novels of Edgar Rice Burroughs, written in a pulpy 1930s style, based on the premise of numerous parallel worlds created by the act of imagining them. "An amazing farrago of SF and fantasy in which various fictional worlds intersect and the characters come to realize that they themselves are equally unreal. Lazarus Long (from TIME ENOUGH FOR LOVE) and Jubal Harshaw (from STRANGER IN A STRANGE LAND) turn up again, as do many other familiar figments. It's all very jokey on the surface, but a desperate nightmare of solipsism seems to lie below. Dreadful old rubbish: one of Heinlein's worst." - Pringle, The Ultimate Guide to Science Fiction, second edition (1995), p. 261. Sargent, British and American Utopian Literature, 1516-1985, Additions. A fine copy in fine dust jacket. (#155373)

        RETRATOS DA BAHIA: 1946 a 1952.

Corrupio,, Bahia: 1980 - 249 pp. First edition. Photographic monograph of Bahia, Brazil; text in Portuguese; black and white photographs throughout; 3,000 copies. [Preface] by Carybé; [Introduction] by Jorge Amado. Binding tight; boards with minute wear; dust jacket faded; minor corner wear; former price front endpaper; otherwise near fine. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
