        Photographs]: Large Art Photographs

[New Jersey 1980 - A collection of more than 130 gelatin silver photographs taken by David Booker during the 1970s and 1980s. The mostly large format images measure from 5" x 7" to 19" x 23", but with most approximately 11" x 14". Two of the images are matted, one is mounted on cardboard, and with about a half dozen duplicates. Overall near fine with curling at the edges; a scattered few have minor abrasion from adhering to another print or on the back from being previously mounted. The vast majority of the artfully captured images feature African-American woman in some state of undress, possibly for magazine layouts or as glamour shots. There are more than a dozen different models, many captured over a series of photos that range in content and size. None of the images are captioned or stamped on the back, but a note on the box in which they are housed does lists the names of nine women which presumably correspond with some of the images. Additional photos in the collection include portraits, head shots, commercial images (wine, fashion, and job training), and print images of DJ Frankie Crocker and Booker T. Washington's daughter, Portia.Little could be found about Booker aside from a 1968 photo credit for the book, *A Mission for Justice: The History of the First African-American Church in Newark, New Jersey* by Mary Ward, which corresponds geographically to their purchase in Northern New Jersey. An unusual collection of large format African-American images.

The Great Muppet Caper on location in Battersea Park. Peter Falk with Kermit the Frog. 10/09/1980.

      - 745 x 520mm. Giclà e Print using Archival pigment inks on Hahnemüle Fine Art Pearl 285gsm paper. Limited edition of 10 numbered copies signed by the photographer. Alan Davidson is a press photographer based in London for more than 30 years, Alan has photographed the rich, the famous, the before-they-were-famous to those that have fallen from grace. Going through his vast archive, with new treasures found within the old brown manilla envelopes, reads like a who's who of the great and good (and the very bad) of London society. Cinema stars rub shoulders with pop stars, royalty with politicians. Working from the late 1960s to the present day Alan remembers the days before celebrities became surrounded by 30 young publicists and before there were 50 photographers at every event you went to, allowing him to take intimate and relaxed portraits, unlike the anodyne syndicated press shots of today.         Subterranean Pop (Sub/Pop) Issues 1 and 2 (First two issues) 1980

Olympia, WA: Bruce Pavitt, 1980. First printing. Paperback. Near Fine. Spring 1980 and November, 1980. First printings of first two issues of this legendary indie rock magazine! First volume VG+ with rubbing and mild foxing to wrap; volume two near fine with faint foxing. The origins of Sub Pop can be traced back to 1980 when Bruce Pavitt started a fanzine called Subterranean Pop that focused exclusively on American independent record labels. Pavitt undertook the project in order to earn course credit while attending Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington. In 1986, Pavitt released the first Sub Pop LP, the compilation Sub Pop 100, which featured material by artists including Sonic Youth, Naked Raygun, Wipers, and Scratch Acid. In November 1988 Sub Pop released "Love Buzz", the debut single by Aberdeen, Washington band Nirvana, as the first entry in the Sub Pop Singles Club, a subscription service that would allow subscribers to receive singles by the label on a monthly basis by mail. At its peak in 1990, the club had two thousand subscribers. The club made Sub Pop a powerful force in the Seattle scene, and effectively made the label's name synonymous with the music of the Seattle area-much in the same way Motown Records was to Detroit. Essential indie rock swag! OCLC locates 3 copies of the first issue and one of the second issue in libraries. Extremely RARE, charting and recording the birth of indie rock in America.

Figures, with three background figures.Original painting, acrylic on canvas, measuring 20 x 24 inches, signed lower right with the artist's initials, as was his custom, and on verso in full

1980 - An exceptionally fine painting of a young man engulfed in light, another young man watching him from behind, while a man and a woman meet in the background. This evocative painting reflects the rather complicated personal relationships which seemed of great interest to Williams and the palette speaks to his nights and days in Key West, a place, like Provincetown and Venice, famed for its particular light.

THEY FELL IN THE BATTLE - A Roll of Honour of the Battle of Britain, 10 July - 31 October 1940

Hendon: Royal Air Force Museum Printed by Rampant Lions Press. Near Fine. 1980. First Edition. Full Leather. Autograph; [5], 50, [2] leaves pages; Clean and tight in original binding of full blue morocco with gilt lettering at spine and gilt cross on front board; sunned at spine, otherwise Near Fine in very good blue buckram-covered slipcase with a lining of watered silk (slipcase now sunned at edges). Foreword written and SIGNED by His Royal Highness PRINCE PHILIP Duke of Marlborough. This is No. 44 of an edition limited to only 80 copies, signed by Prince Philip (as Marshal of the Royal Air Force). [5], 50, [2] leaves; 39cm. Text printed in Air Force blue on rectos of leaves only, title in blue and gold, top edges gilt, fore and bottom edges uncut, folio. (Quoting from the colophon): "The idea for this edition came from Dr. John Tanner CBE Founding Director of the Royal Air Force Museum who gave editorial guidance throughout. There were only eighty copies printed designed and printed by Will Carter at the Rampant Lions Press, Cambridge on Arches Velin mould-made paper. The handsome binding is by W. T. Morrell of Covent Garden, in specially dyed goatskin with spine lettering designed by the printer. Production was supervised throughout by Nottingham Court Press." Commissioned to commemorate the 40th anniversary of The Battle of Britain, the Roll has been compiled by Group Captain Tom Gleave and Squadron Leader F.E. Dymond, resident historian of the Royal Air Force Museum, and includes research completed to 1 January 1980. The great Winston Churchill, in one of his finest sentences, explained and defined the Battle of Britain for all time: "Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few." (Churchill's words are given a place of honor as the epigraph of this volume.) The names so handsomely recorded in this book are exactly and precisely those Churchill memorably denoted as the "few." The "Roll of Honour" with the simple, yet intensely elegant, register of the names of the Battle of Britain's fallen, is at its heart, a collection of inscriptions. And the extraordinarily fine gilt letters on the magnificent crushed levant morocco binding by W. T. Morrell were, of course, designed by Will Carter. This Rampant Lions Press production constitutes a remarkable memorial to the 435 Pilots and 63 crew members who, in death, made up Churchill's "few." It was offered to even fewer -- [80 copies, issued at £1000. It is known that there were copies, perhaps a dozen, which did not receive this expensive full niger goatskin binding, but were issued as unbound sheets]. This is copy number 44 of 80, with the special binding unworn, albeit now light-struck along the spine. A Beautifully produced and very heavy book; international and priority shipping can be arranged for additional charge. Not just another fine press book -- "They Fell in Battle" was clearly a project of the highest personal significance to Will Carter, founder of the Rampant Lions Press. Carter [1912-2001] interrupted a long life devoted to the design and printing of fine books and the artful forming of letters for significant and dangerous service in the Royal Navy in the South Atlantic and the Eastern Mediterranean, during the Second World War. Carter commanded a converted Greek sailing ship tasked with transporting Allied undercover agents around occupied Greece. After his demobilisation in 1946, Carter returned to a position with the printing firm of Heffers in Cambridge, where he had been promoted to "Designer" in 1934, and printed his Rampant Lions projects in his spare time. In 1949 he ceased outside work for others and became full-time proprietor of the Rampant Lions Press, fulfilling a desire dating back to his earliest years. Will Carter had nearly been born into the book business; he was the younger brother (by seven years) of the bookseller, biblio-historian and Housman scholar John Carter, who with Graham Pollard exposed the T. J. Wise/Buxton Forman forgeries of 19th-century pamphlets. Will Carter's interest in printing began on a fateful visit to the Oxford University Press in 1924, where he was allowed to print a visiting card for himself using the 17th-century Fell type. A few days later, John Johnson, soon to become Printer to the University of Oxford, sent young Will Carter some type to experiment with, hoping that it would make for an amusing and useful hobby for a twelve year old. After school years at Radley, Carter trained with various printers before rising through the ranks at Heffers, but had already made a start on his destiny by producing an edition of 50 copies of fellow printer John Baskerville's "Preface" to his 1758 edition of 'Paradise Lost.' Although some of the early production of the Rampant Lions press consisted of printing wedding invitations, change-of-address cards and various ephemeral announcements, rather than books -- all of the work was produced to superbly high standards. Will Carter's interests in the world of letters extended to calligraphy, letter-cutting and type-design. In 1936 he had carved some lettering on a round breadboard for Brooke Crutchley (who would become the Cambridge University Printer), and Will Carter was to continue carving decorative alphabets -- often of his own design -- into different shaped panels for the next 60 years. In 1948, Carter met Eric Gill's last apprentice, the lettercutter David Kindersley, who taught Carter the difficult art of cutting letters in slate. The first of his commissions in this medium was the war memorial at Magdalene College, and he went on to produce many elegant gravestones and tablets. The culmination of this aspect of Will Carter's mastery was his design and cutting of the foundation stone of the new British Library at St Pancras. For Carter, printing, letter design, and the cutting of inscriptions were all part of an allied series of tasks and opportunities. As he put it, "the handling of type and the setting out of carved inscriptions came to influence each other. The setting of printer's caps in particular has reached a fine point of sensitivity as a result." By 1980, the Rampant Lion Press had largely been handed over by the founder to Will Carter's son,Sebastian, with the elder Carter devoting most of his time to carving and lettering. So it is particularly fitting that Will Carter designed and executed this very special Rampant Lions Press project himself, without collaboration; it certainly unites his various talents and interests. The "Roll of Honour" with the simple, yet intensely elegant, register of the names of the Battle of Britain's fallen, is at its heart, a collection of inscriptions. And the extraordinarily fine gilt letters on the magnificent crushed levant morocco binding by W. T. Morrell were, of course, designed by Will Carter. This Rampant Lions Press production constitutes a remarkable memorial to the 435 Pilots and 63 crew members who, in death, made up Churchill's "few."         I, Me, Mine.

Guildford Surrey, England: Genesis Publications Limited, 1980. Signed first limited edition of Harrison's autobiography. Octavo, original three quarters green calf over cloth, red morocco spine label, mounted red morocco gilt cover design, pictorial endpapers, raised bands, all edges gilt, cloth slipcase with paper label. With 17 in-text illustrations, 49 photographic plates, including one folding, and facsimiles of original manuscript lyrics for 83 songs. One of 2000 copies signed by George Harrison. Fine in a fine slipcase. As a Beatle and then as a solo artist, "Harrison blended earthy Roots tones with droning eastern influences and cascading melodies... The sound was organic and blooming, huge yet worldly. His songs unfolded unpredictably and took the listener to unfamiliar sonic regions. Music enthusiasts credit him for integrating eastern sounds into western music" (Rolling Stone). Harrison complements recollections of his career with facsimiles of his original manuscript lyrics for 83 songs, including "Here Comes the Sun" and "Something," annotating each with the story behind its creation.

[New York]: Jenny Holzer, 1980. 13 1/2 x 20" broadside, offset printed. One of the best known posters from her Truisms series, which the artist began in 1977 and posted and distributed around New York City.         EIGHT WOOD ENGRAVINGS ON A THEME OF PAN.

Northampton: Pennyroyal Press, 1980. 6 1/2 x 10. 29 pages, 3 leaves. Navy cloth, paper spine label. Extra label laid in. Fine. A Patron's copy, inscribed by Moser to Mimi and Arnold [Elkind]. Each of the engravings specially signed by Moser. (The edition of 130 copies did not have signed engravings.) Also signed by the calligrapher Betse Curtis, the binder Barbara Blumenthal, and the printer Harold McGrath. Despite the title, there are 7 engravings. The original binding design called for a large triangular label on the upper cover; this label was to have the 8th engraving. After the edition was printed, the binding design changed. Text is six epigrams from the Anthologia Graeca, which Moser loosely translates in his afterword. Set in Goudy Greek (12pt. to 36pt.) in 3 or 4 colors, and punctuated with original brush calligraphy. Printed on handmade Japanese Etching paper; engravings on sheets of Sekishu. A delightful book. Pennyroyal Checklist 24.

In a near fine clipped wrapper with the usual fading to the spine encroaching a little on to the rear panel. A very rare book and especially so signed by the Nobel laureate. Coetzee was awarded the 2003 Nobel Prize for Literature for 'the innumberable guises portraying the surprising involvement of the outsider'.

        Amadeus.

London: Andre Deutsch, 1980. First edition of the playwright's classic work. Octavo, original cloth. Lengthily signed by the author on the front free endpaper, "What use, after all is Man, if not to teach God His lessons?" Peter Shaffer." Near fine in a near fine dust jacket. Amadeus is a play by Peter Shaffer, which gives a highly fictionalized account of the lives of the composers Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Antonio Salieri. First performed in 1979, Amadeus was inspired by a short 1830 play by Alexander Pushkin called Mozart and Salieri (which was also used as the libretto for an opera of the same name by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov in 1897). After being presented successfully at the Royal National Theatre, London in 1979, the play moved to the West End followed by Broadway. Amadeus won the 1981 Tony Award for Best Play. It was adapted by Shaffer for the 1984 Academy Award-winning film of the same name, directed by Milos Forman. The film was nominated for 53 awards and received 40, which included eight Academy Awards, four BAFTA Awards, four Golden Globes, and a Directors Guild of America award. As of 2016, it is the most recent film to have more than one nomination in the Academy Award for Best Actor category. In 1998, the American Film Institute ranked Amadeus 53rd on its 100 Years...100 Movies list.

Alan Paton regarding Dutch settlement in South Africa: "when you came here we had the land and you had the bible, now we have the bible and you have the land"

Natal, South Africa, 1980-1981. 7.75" x 11.75". "Archive comprised of four pale blue airmail combination letter and cachet TLS signed "Alan Paton" or "Al" in blue or black ball point pen, each written in Natal, South Africa to either "Mrs. Lyons" or "Sylvia" between December 1980 and December 1981. All with canceled RSA stamps and sticker listing sender's address as "A.S. Paton, P.O. Box 278, Hillcrest, 3650 Natal, South Africa". December 2nd 1980 letter also briefly annotated in blue ball point pen. Letters measuring 7.75"" x 11.75"" are mostly in very good condition, some with rough or slightly torn edges, one with small tear, all with ghost tape impression at center. Some excerpts can be found below:December 2nd 1980"My house was not 'off limits' and I never experienced house arrest. This is the most grievous punishment that this government can impose. I suppose you know that it is imposed by a Minister of State and the victim has no appeal to the courts. Something which would not happen in the United States. Less serious than house arrest is what is called 'banning', which means that you are confined to a certain area, that you are not allowed to attend any gathering, that nothing you say can be published, that you may not enter any court or dock area or school ... I did however lose my passport for 10 years ... I was very interested in your story that 'We Dutch came here with the bible in one hand and a rifle in the other'. There is another equally witty saying, attributed to a black man. He said 'when you came here we had the land and you had the bible, now we have the bible and you have the land'".April 20th 1981"I of course follow the American news very closely and am a reader of the 'Christian Science Monitor'. I don't take quite such a grim view of Reagan's administration as many Democrats must do ... I am very lucky to enjoy good health, but at the moment I am in a kind of limbo, which always happens when one finishes a book and is waiting for its publication".September 22nd 1981"Thank you for your offer to send me something from New York. That is very generous of you, but it is also extremely risky to make such an offer ... I shall write 35 words on the subject of 'How the Rich and Famous Economise', and will put them at the end of this letter. I am not rich, but I am not poor. I suppose I am famous, but not in any high category ... "December 22nd 1981"It is not in the least risky for you to send me anything, nor is it in the least risky for me to receive anything. It might have been so twenty years ago. You ask what I would like you to send. Well what I really fancy is a brand new Boeing 747 with an Executive Suite!"Alan Paton (1903-1988) was a teacher, author, and activist celebrated for his 1946 work Cry, the Beloved Country, a work published just before the rise of the separatist National Party in South Africa. Paton, who vehemently opposed apartheid, organized an alternative political party called the Liberal Party of South Africa. He was punished for openly opposing government policy in various ways; in his December 2nd 1980 letter, for example, he refers to how the government had confiscated his passport (this upon his return from New York in 1960). Paton addresses his curtailed rights frankly in his correspondence, even going so far as to juxtapose South African policy with American. Sylvia Lyons was the widow of Leonard Lyons (1906-1976), a popular serial columnist who produced 12,000 mostly arts-related newspaper columns over a forty-year period published in the New York Post under the heading "The Lyon's Den". Leonard and Sylvia Lyons were a dynamic couple who knew dozens of actors, musicians, writers, and Hollywood personalities through Leonard's work as a journalist. Paton is thus assured of Sylvia's interest in literary topics, commenting on popular books of the early 80s -- such as the novels of James Michener -- as well as recent book review projects. Paton published his third novel Ah, But Your Land is Beautiful in 1981, the same time that most of this correspondence was written."

Number 5: The Graphix Magazine of Abstract Depressionism, 1983. pp. 52. RAW was a seminal alternative magazine of the 1980s. It ran for eleven issues ending in 1991 with its final number, High Culture for Lowbrows a title which captures the essence of RAW. It presented serious and angry social, political and historical analysis in an anarchic cartoon format suggesting something of Pop Art (although Mouly claimed to have been influenced by the Russian Constructivists). RAW also drew on European high art but presented it in a comic strip format. Its marriage of high and low, the intellectual and the popular was instrumental in creating the atmosphere of cultural fluidity which we now accept as a post-modern norm.
