The Complete EC Library: Weird Fantasy (4 Volume Boxed Set)

Russ Cochran, 1980. Hard Cover. VF - Very Fine. Various. 4 Volume Slipcased set. Published originally by William M. Gaines. Weird Fantasy (1950-3) continued the numbering of its predecessor, A Moon A Girl, Romance, hence early issues are numbered #11 through 17. The final issues were normalised, giving 22 issues in total. Publisher William M. Gaines always preferred the science fiction Comics of all his publications. Even though modest sellers, he kept at least on title going from 1950 until the end in 1956. These Comics continue the dystopian view of man, formed by companion title Weird Science. They deal with man & his foibles as he attempts to visit & colonise space, interact with alien species or live with atomic weapons. Despite their pessimism, they are also imaginative and darkly humorous. From 1952 writer Ray Bradbury's stories were adapted & several are feature here. Other science fiction writers were also sampled without their knowledge, adding to the sophistication of stories on offer. Add into the mix some of the most beautiful visions of 1950s science fiction from artists Al Feldstein, Wally Wood, Al Williamson, Harvey Kurtzman, Joe Orlando, Jack Kamen & others. Weird Fantasy represents some of the finest science fiction stories ever illustrated. Purchase this handsome high quality reprint anthology today & find out why. Each book is smyth sewn and deluxe bound to last a lifetime of re-reading. Very Fine condition with only minor shelf-wear to slipcase. 768 pages. Black & White illustrations. 9" x 12" (235mm x 310mm). Slipcase.

Random House, New York 1980 - First edition of one of the best-selling science books ever published. Octavo, original cloth, illustrated. Signed by Carl Sagan on the title page. Fine in a near fine price-clipped dust jacket. Jacket design by Robert Aulicino, jacket painting by Adolph Schaller. Signed first printings are rare. Cosmos is the best-selling science book ever published in the English language. Brilliant and provocative, it traces today's knowledge and scientific methods to their historical roots, blending science and philosophy in a wholly energetic and irresistible way. "Enticing, imaginative, readable, iridescent" (The New York Times). It was also a thirteen-part television series written by Carl Sagan, Ann Druyan, and Steven Soter, with Sagan as presenter. It was executive-produced by Adrian Malone, produced by David Kennard, Geoffrey Haines-Stiles, and Gregory Andorfer, and directed by the producers, David Oyster, Richard Wells, Tom Weidlinger, and others. It covers a wide range of scientific subjects, including the origin of life and a perspective of our place in the universe. The series was first broadcast by the Public Broadcasting Service in 1980, and was the most widely watched series in the history of American public television until The Civil War. As of 2009, it was still the most widely watched PBS series in the world. It went on to win two Emmys and a Peabody Award, and has since been broadcast in more than 60 countries and seen by over 500 million people. It was followed-up by the 2014 documentary television series bearing the same name presented by astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, who, as a young high school student, was inspired by Sagan.       Phantasia Press, Huntington Woods 1980 - Huntington Woods, Phantasia Press, 1980. Limited Edition. 618/725 Copies. A fine copy. Signed by the author and dated 'July 8, 1980'. King signed the 725 sheets over four dates, apparently. It's commonly thought that those dated 6th and 7th are least common, though looking at the numbers on the four we have at present, the second date is numbered 167/725 (the present copy). Assuming they were signed sequentially, the numbering would suggest fewer than 1/4 were signed on the first date. The Phantasia Press edition precedes the Viking edition making this limited edition of 751 copies (including the lettered edition) the first edition.         Il Dissoluto Punito" - Original Illustration for Don Giovanni

      - Original illustration for Peter Sellars' 1980 production of Don Giovanni, by the renowned American artist and writer best known for his unsettling Gothic tales. The full Italian title of the opera, "Il Dissoluto Punito, osia: Il Don Giovanni," is lettered in Classical capitals within a detailed border composed of a dead wolf's pelt. The illustration was used for both the program and the curtain of the opera production. Pen and ink on paper. Signed in brown ink at the lower right margin and captioned "curtain 1/4"=1'" in black ink at the lower right corner. Registration marks and Gorey's faint erased pencil tracings are visible beneath ink. Image 6.5 x 7.5 inches (15.7x19 cm), on sheet measuring 11 x 13.75 inches. Nicely framed. After the great stage director Peter Sellars made his mark with Wagner's Ring Cycle in the late 1970's, he was invited to produce Mozart opera, "Don Giovanni," at the Monadnock, New Hampshire Music Festival. Already marking his career as a daring innovator, Sellars persuaded Gorey, who was recently celebrated for his brilliant, macabre designs for the Broadway production of Dracula, to create the sets and costumes for the Festival's Palace Theatre production. The successful performance ran September 20th and 23rd, 1980 with musical direction by James Bolle. This illustration is a fine example of Gorey's meticulous craftsmanship, through both the faint underlying pencil sketches which reveal his attempts to perfect the lettering and spacing, and in the richly inked shading and textural details of the Gothic wolf's head and skin border design.

Church Poems. With illustrations by John Piper. (FIRST STATE, DELUXE ISSUE)

John Murray, London, 1980. The deluxe issue of the withdrawn first edition, of which one hundred copies were produced and bound, and virtually all destroyed prior to publication. This copy signed on the colophon by John Betjeman, but not numbered, and without Piper's signature, who presumably was due to sign them later. Due to a production error, the last seven lines of the poem 'Bristol and Clifton', the two full pages of the poem 'Sunday Afternoon Service in St Enodoc Church, Cornwall' were omitted, resulting in both the trade issue and this deluxe issue being destroyed and corrected editions issued the following year. John Murray claimed that all but half a dozen copies of the trade edition were destroyed, although the actual number of survivors is almost certainly higher. This deluxe edition is certainly a great deal scarcer, Peterson identified a surviving typescript (the printer's copy) of the colophon sheet, so signed by Betjeman and with a note by Murray stating that "The signed copy also had to be destroyed of Church Poems!" This present copy however, formally belonging to Dorothy Couzens [née Liptrap], a production assistant and some-time illustrator at John Murray Ltd. between 1960-1985, is the entire text, cut from the watered silk binding (presumably re-cycled for the corrected edition) and with the original marbled endpapers now serving as makeshift wrappers. 8vo. 63pp. Top edge gilt. A very good copy - scarce as proverbial hen's teeth, this being quite probably the only surviving example of the deluxe issue of the withdrawn text.. Signed by Author(s). 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good.

He participated in three of the four landmark shows that followed between 1879 and 1884. Influenced by Impressionist theories on light and colour, he preferred to depict scenes of everyday life. His watercolors, pastels, and paintings focused on Parisian popular entertainments and themes of modernity. The racetrack, the ballet, the comic opera, and bustling cafés. From 1898 - 1899 Forain worked as an illustrator for the weekly French magazine Psst.!, a satirical publication to promote the anti-Dreyfus cause and contributed anti-semitic caricatures. Aside from being influenced by his friend Edgar Degas for over fifty years, Forain was greatly influenced by Honoré Daumier; and his treatment of subjects in his drawings for publications such as Le Figaro and Le Courrier Francais are often reminiscent of Daumier's. In 1892 he published the first volume of La Comédie Parisienne, a collection of Forain's illustrations and commentary on the major stories political stories that disrupted France¿s Third Republic¿such as the anarchic crisis and the Dreyfus affair. In 1891 Forain married the painter Jeanne Bosc with whom he had a son, Jean-Loup, born in 1895. [Attributes: Signed Copy]
