Flatland. A Romance of Many Dimensions

San Francisco: Arion Press, 1980. Tall 4to, original aluminum covers stamped in black, contained in an aluminum frame with hinged top with clasp, lettered in black along one edge. 56 accordion-style folded panels, comprising 112 pp. 14 line illustrations and 10 mounted die-cut panels by the printer, Andrew Hoyem, after designs by the author. A fine copy. First edition in this format, published in an edition of 275 copies, signed by Ray Bradbury at the end of his introduction, and by Andrew Hoyem in the colophon. This tale about the inhabitants of a two-dimensional world and their difficulties with one-dimensional and three-dimensional beings has never gone out of print since it was first printed in 1886. ÒThe great classic of dimensional thought, this has been a highly influential work in science-fiction. It is very nicely written, amusing, logical, and easy to follow. It is still much the best of the various books that have explored life in worlds of fewer dimensions than oursÓ (Bleiler, Science-Fiction. The Early Years, 2). This is perhaps technically the most elaborate or complicated of all the Arion Press books to date; it was the seventh production of HoyemÕs Arion Press and has long been one of the most difficult, though less costly than the livres dÕartiste, to acquire. The text pages and illustration units measure 7 x 14 inches and are joined accordion-style to a length of 33 feet printed on each side, making a 66-foot long book. Although Abbott was a brilliant teacher and scholar, DNB notes Òhe is most remembered as the author of Flatland: a Romance of Many Dimensions, published under the pseudonym of A Square in 1884. At once a lesson in higher dimensional geometry, a social satire, and an expression of religious principle, this work gives lasting testimony to Abbott's genius as a teacher and to his literary and moral imagination.Ó&

A People's History of the United States

New York: Harper & Row, 1980. First edition, first printing of the historian's magnum opus. Thick Octavo. Signed by the author, who has transcribed the last line, "If we understand that, and act on it, not only will life be more satisfying, right off, but our grandchildren and our great-grandchildren might possibly see a different and marvelous world. Howard Zinn". Near fine in a very good dust jacket. "A brilliant and moving history of the American people" (The Library Journal). Uncommon, especially signed. The New York Times wrote that author "[p]rofessor Zinn writes with an enthusiasm rarely encountered in the leaden prose of academic history, and his text is studded with telling quotations from labor leaders, war resisters and fugitive slaves. There are vivid descriptions of events that are usually ignored, such as the great railroad strike of 1877 and the brutal suppression of the Philippine independence movement at the turn of this century. Professor Zinn's chapter on Vietnam-bringing to life once again the free-fire zones, secret bombings, massacres and cover-ups-should be required reading for a new generation of students now facing conscription." Howard Fast added this when he declared A People's History to be "[o]ne of the most important books I have ever read in a long life of reading...It's a wonderful, splendid book--a book that should be read by every American, student or otherwise, who wants to understand his country, its true history, and its hope for the future.

Lettre. Très bon. Couverture souple. Signé par l'auteur. Ed. originale. Nice, 28 novembre 1980. 1 p. in-8, 16 lignes.

        Bat Bean Bag Toy

(Middle Falls, NY): Toy Works, 1980. This bean bag toy of a bat with outstretched wings measures approximately fifteen inches from wingtip to wingtip. The fabric is printed with a black and white crosshatched pattern that is shaded on the wings and body to give the figure more dimensionality, evoking Gorey’s characteristic drawing style. The wings are stiffened and stitched along the folds. The bat also has glittering red rhinestone eyes. This is one of five bean bag animals in a collection designed by Edward Gorey and produced by Toy Works; it is also the largest of these toys. Although the toys in this series are not all necessarily characters from Gorey’s works, this bat appears to be inspired by his designs for a 1977 production of Dracula. Fine.
