IRVING PENN: FLOWERS

New York City, NY: Harmony Books, 1980. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. Fine/Fine Dust Jacket.. New York City, NY: Harmony Books, 1980. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. First Edition/First Printing. 95 pages. Landmark collection of color photographs. One of the most beautiful photography books of the 20th century. The First Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent printings of the 1980 Edition as well as the 1988 Reissued Facsimile Edition. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now rare. A magnificent production by Irving Penn and Eugene Conner: Oversize-volume format. Cream linen cloth boards with black titles embossed on spine, as issued. Photographs, Introduction, and Afterword by Irving Penn. Printed on very thick glossy Kromekote stock paper by Acme Printing Company in the United States to absolutely the highest standards. The sumptuous and exquisite richness, clarity, and warmth of the plates must be seen to be believed. In pictorial DJ with black titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents Irving Penn's legendary collection of flower photographs. They represent his aesthetic counter-response to the dominant Nature photography of the 20th century. Instead of the majestic and monumental images of Edward Weston and his most famous disciple, Ansel Adams (which are indeed beautiful) , Irving Penn went in the opposite direction and photographed flowers in extreme closeups, showing them in minute detail, that is to say, in all their beauty and sensuality, and revealing their hidden eroticism: The flower's bloom has always been a Romantic and poetic symbol for both the female organ and orgasm. As always with Irving Penn, discretion rules: The eroticism is unmistakable yet subtle, powerful yet restrained. A testament to Irving Penn's genius for nuance, color, and perfectionist's attention to detail, each photograph shows the varieties of the Poppy, Tulip, Lily, Peony, Orchid, Begonia, and of course, the Queen of all flowers, the Rose. Irving Penn died on October 7, 2009 at the age of 92, his place in photographic history permanent and secure. An absolute "must-have" title for Irving Penn collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed, placed, and dated in black pen on the half-title page by the photographer: "Irving Penn N. Y.1985". Penn encircled his signature for emphasis. This title is now very highly collectible. This is one of very few signed copies of the First Edition ("First Edition" and complete number line ending in 1 on the Copyright Page) still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. The original plates in this book are among the most collectible photographic prints, breaching the $100, 000 whenever one of them does appear on the market. This gem of a book shows them in their entirety, an accessible alternative that will give endless pleasure. Almost all other copies available online have major flaws. A rare copy thus. 70 color plates. Irving Penn's "Moments Preserved" was selected as one of the greatest photography books in "The Photobook". One of the greatest photographers of the 20th century. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER IRVING PENN TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 0517540746.
