Graduale: OLdr. auf 3 echten Bünden m. 2 Leder- Schliessen, Eisenbeschlägen u Mittelrosette; Kommentarbd in OHLdr. Schönes Exemplar. Eines von 980 num. Exemplaren. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

GRAPES AND GRAPE VINES OF CALIFORNIA. A Facsimile of the Original Edition of 1877. With an Introduction by Kevin Starr.

John Windle Pub. Co., San Francisco 1980 - no.12 of a limited edition (see details below), 20 x 14½ inches, 10 colour plates by Hannah Millard each with its own description, xi pages of a new introduction + (iii) pages of the preface to the original, top edges gilt, cloth covered boards with morocco spine, marbled endpapers, slip-case slightly worn at the corners, there is a note in pencil in the publisher's hand on the final blank that "This is the last copy from my inventory. One personal copy is being bound for me." NOTE:- The folio Windle edition, originally planned to be limited to 300 copies for sale (100 bound and 200 loose in a portfolio) and 10 hors commerce was, in fact, never completed. Only 25 were bound and 40 in portfolio. A quarto edition was published elsewhere later. The original edition, published by Edward Bosqui in 1877, is itself very scarce. It is believed to have been a small edition and that few complete sets were assembled. Of those, a significant proportion seem to have been lost or irreparably damaged in the earthquake of April 1906. As John Windle, the publisher of the 1980 edition, states on the limitation page, he examined every known copy in the United States. Of these 14 copies, 8 were damaged, stained, foxed or imperfect. Only 6 were perfect. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Abbeville Press, New York 1980 - Tom Wesselmann's monograph that is both a visual retrospective and an informed critical account of his work. Stealingworth, Wesselmann's alias, does a great job of opening up to the audience in order help us understand his art from his perspective. He became well known for the overt erotic imagery of his series, Great American Nude, which became progressively more sexual during the 1970s.The acetate dust jacket with some chips and tears, internally very clean.         Tom Wesselmann

Abbeville Press, New York 1980 - 1980 Stated First Edition. INSCRIBED by Wesselmann on the title page, in blue ink, "For Mary and Alan / with much fondness / Tom Wesselmann / December 1981." A NEAR FINE copy: clean, otherwise unmarked and firmly bound. Pages are fresh and fine. Hardcover of ivory buckram cloth over boards is titled in black on spine and front cover with color pictorial pastedown on front cover. Cover is clean and sharp. Slight rubbing and toning along edges of boards and spine but otherwise cover is fine - no bumps, tears or frays. Binding and hinges firm and intact; light salmon colored endpapers fine. The book is in a clear acetate jacket which is quite worn- toned along edges and spine, several tears and large chips. It has done well in protecting the book. A new acetate could replace this if the buyer desires. A momentous monograph on this important American artist - a leader of the 1960s Pop Art movement. It is actually autobiographic, as Slim Stealingworth was Wesselmann's pseudonym. Its 324 pages are packed with reproductions of Wesselmann's works: collages, early nude collages, bathtub collages, Great American Nudes, seascapes, smokers, mouths, faces, sculptures and several studies and drawings - as well as a few photographs of the artist and his studio. Many of the reproductions are in color. One of two plates on page 175 is pasted in, another plate is tipped onto the page. There are 2 fold-out pages with thumbnails of Wesselmann's fairly few prints and editions. An Exhibition List and Index are included. Laid into the book is the Abbeville Press invitation for a "meet the artist" party held on Dec. 8, 1981 at the 999 Bookshop in New York City. 12 x 13-1/4." The book weighs 7.5 lbs.         Faksimile - Die Eidgenössische Chronik des Wernher Schodoler. Um 1510 bis 1535 (2 Bde. Faksimile; 1 Kommentarband).

Luzern, Faksimile-Vlg., 1980-83 - 2° (39.5 x 29.5 cm), Faksimilebde.: insgesamt 1048 Seiten mit 325 zum teil kolorierten Federzeichnungen; Kommentarbd.: 410 S.; , Faksimile: Bd. 1: Ganzleder mit Blindprägung, 2 Schliessen u. 10 Beschläge in OLwd.-Schuber; Bd. 2: Ganzleder mit Blindprägung, 2 Schliessen in OLwd.-Schuber; Kommentarband in OHLdr., Ldr. teilweise mit kleinen Flecken, sonst sehr schönes u tadelloses Exemplar. 102 von 980 arab. num. Exemplaren. 1200 gr. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Waiting for the Barbarians

Secker and Warburg, London 1980 - Hardback - A fine copy of the true UK first edition, with un marked black boards with un faded gilt lettering to the spine. Very light pushing to the spine tip, but with sharp corners. Internally, the pages are very crisp and white with no owner names or inscriptions. No marks, and no signs of foxing. The book is possibly an unread copy, as there is still resistance to the boards when the book is opened. The dustwrapper is only in very good condition. The book is correctly priced at £5.95 net. There are no tears or chips to the wrapper, and no creasing. The spine has faded heavily to a white, as is nearly always encountered with this title. A bit of a shame, as the wrapper is a very nice example indeed, as is the book. Scans available on request. [Attributes: First Edition]

The Raven [Miniature, handwritten & illustrated manuscript, crafted & bound by Jiri Hadlac].

Handwritten & bound miniature illustrated manuscript book; undated; ca. 1980's. Artist's name written on front paste down. - A hand-crafted miniature artist's book by Jiri Hadlac. Size of binding: 2 x 2 1/2", consists of 18 numbered pages of calligraphic manuscript, written in English, in several different colored inks & with similar drawings in outline of heads of ravens, by Hadlac. Paper is a special, multi-tinted paper, assembled accordion-style, with written words in various directions & drawings on one side. Text is sentences from Poe's "The Raven", beginning" "Once upon a midnight ." . Binding is in a dark stained calf leather with a semi-abstract, raised/sculpted form on front cover, which suggests a pen, head on a raven, etc. with various tools blindstamped in lines on both covers, letter P on back cover; text is bound to back cover, so the front cover drops down & away from textblock; cover edges, surface show "antiqued" look. Artist's name signed as calligraphy on front paste down: Hadlac. Fine condition. One of a small series of handwritten & entirely handmade/bound books based on Poe's Raven. This appears to be the smallest in size, to our knowledge. Rare item. "[.] The decisive breakthrough came with the Fifth Jubilee Trienale held in Prague, and organized by the Prague Museum of National Literature. The selection offered a rich and varied cross-section of new styles and unconventional approaches, including books written, illustrated, and bound by one artist, book-concepts, book-objects, books bound in morocco and decorated in classical style, books employing conventional techniques and materials, books of handmade paper or synthetic materials. Particularily outstanding binders included J. H. Kocman and Jiri Hadlac. Kocman, though by profession a veternary pharmacologist, is the creator of numerous livre d'auteur projects and concept-books embodying his conception of the total book; i.e., a book created in all respects (idea, material, actual execution) by a single artist. Jiri Hadlac, graphic artist and sculptor, had a different background, natural science having been his original field of specialization. Hadlac is an idiosyncratic interpreter of famous literary texts. A good example of his work is his calligraphic rendering of Poe's poem "The Raven" accompanied by his own illustrations, graphic layout, and design and finished with Hadlac's own handmade colored paper and binding." (The Contemporary Renaissance of Fine Bookbinding in Czechoslovakia, 1973-1985, by Emil Minar; in: Fine Print, Vol. 13, #1, January 1987; p. 24). Also see Jiri Hadlac's own article: "Artist of the Book", in: The New Bookbinder Journal of Designer Bookbinders Vol. 8, 1988; pp. 28-36; several pictures of other book-projects, featuring Poe's "Raven" are shown.         Probe I.

London 1980 - A lively early print by the progressive contemporary British artist David Ferry. A printmaker and photomontage specialist who has lectured and exhibited his works worldwide, David Ferry was born in Blackpool in 1957. After studying at the Blackpool College of Technology, he trained at the prestigious Camberwell School of Art and Crafts and the Slade School of Fine Art in London. His first solo exhibition was held at the 1984 International Contemporary Art Fair at London's Barbican Centre, and he made his first significant U.S. debut in 2000 as a visiting professor at Southampton College, New York with an exhibition entitled David Ferry from the window seat at the Avram Gallery. In addition to his many lithographs and photomontages, Ferry's oeuvre includes numerous artist books, some of which featured in the 1999 touring exhibition and catalogue Aspects of Our National Heritage. His abstract works frequently have a satirical edge, and the influence of his self-professed fascination with the surreal and the comical is particularly evident in those images representing his subjective interpretation of particular places and historical events. In 2002, he was awarded an important grant from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation. His work can be found at the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Scottish Museum of Modern Art; the Art Institute, Chicago; the Art Museum of Estonia; and in many corporate and university collections. He has had recent solo exhibitions in Berlin, Brighton, London, New York, Seoul and Poznan. Lithograph. Number 3 from an edition of 4. Signed by the artist in pencil, lower right. Very good condition. [Attributes: Signed Copy]
