A People's History of the United States

New York: Harper & Row, 1980. First edition, first printing of the historian's magnum opus. Thick Octavo. Signed by Howard Zinn on the title page. Fine in a near fine dust jacket with a few small closed tears. The nicest example we have seen of this title, as most copies were read and re-read. The New York Times wrote that author "[p]rofessor Zinn writes with an enthusiasm rarely encountered in the leaden prose of academic history, and his text is studded with telling quotations from labor leaders, war resisters and fugitive slaves. There are vivid descriptions of events that are usually ignored, such as the great railroad strike of 1877 and the brutal suppression of the Philippine independence movement at the turn of this century. Professor Zinn's chapter on Vietnam - bringing to life once again the free-fire zones, secret bombings, massacres and cover-ups - should be required reading for a new generation of students now facing conscription." Howard Fast declared A People's History to be "[o]ne of the most important books I have ever read in a long life of reading...It's a wonderful, splendid book - a book that should be read by every American, student or otherwise, who wants to understand his country, its true history, and its hope for the future.

        Dancing Cats and Neglected Murderesses

New York: Workman Publishing, 1980 Limited edition of 300 numbered copies (of 326 total), with a special cover design by Gorey. Signed by Gorey on the limitation page. Publisher's pale blue and black laid paper wrappers, with illustrations of dancing cats and murderesses holding their weapons of choice in front of a night sky. About near fine, with some light toning to the spine and panel edges, a hint of light rubbing to the hinges, bright and fresh interior. A clean and attractive copy. In Dancing Cats and Neglected Murderesses, Gorey presents "a curious event in two parts" that features two peculiar groups: "cats making merry" and "murderesses making trouble." A "double feature" in two parts, this book is comprised of brief textual descriptions that accompany Gorey's full-page illustrations. The first section shows a variety of cats involved in a variety of "unlikely pursuits" and absurd situations, which include "delivering a classical oration in suitable surroundings," "giving tarot readings of a dismal nature," and "semaphoring A Psalm of Life to the world in general," among others. The second section features twelve fictitious, unapologetic female killers, drawn as a series of portrait postcards. The diverse group of murderesses include Mrs. Fledaway, who "laced her husband's tea with atropine in the spring of 1903," and Miss Q. P. Urkheimer, who "brained her fiancé after failing to pick up an easy spare at Glover's Lanes," among others. Dancing Cats and Neglected Murderesses exemplifies Gorey's uncanny ability to unite the macabre and absurd to make delightfully eerie publications. Gorey, unhappy with the "standard" look of the first trade edition of Dancing Cats and Neglected Murderess, designed these pictorial wrappers and published this limited edition using the same sheets as the trade edition.. Illus. by Gorey, Edward. Signed by Author. 1st Edition. Soft Cover. Near Fine.

Fire-Starter / First Edition, Signed, Provenance

Viking Press, New York 1980 - Fine book in a Fine Jacket, signed by Stephen King without inscription, top provenance on the signature. New York: Viking, 1980. First Edition. Signed by King on the title page, without inscription ("flat" signed). Octavo, pictorial jacket, 428 pp. Fine in fine, unclipped jacket. Very handsome signed copy of what's been called Stephen King's quintessential "mid-range" title, with exceptional provenance. The well-paced story of a young girl - a second-generation product of a Dark Agency experiment which produced special powers in both of her parents, but nothing like her own special powers - who is being sought by that agency, Firestarter may, in fact, be King at his best. There's reason to believe he's better at the so-named mid-range than he is at the stark, non-REM-dream-ish moods of his "upper" range. Take your pick, in that regard. One of the nicest examples and most collectible copies you'll ever see, handsome, fine, in an unclipped jacket showing no flaws beyond the inevitable toning-to-cream of its white background. Full provenance, with photo of King signing, to the purchaser. King added a particular type of additional mark here, perhaps for the purpose of later authentication. Scarce thus, and the most collectible form of the title. L54n [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Kupreianov was a Soviet graphic artist born in 1894, in the Polish People’s Republic; died July 29, 1933, in Moscow. "In 1910, Kupreianov studied in St. Petersburg with A. P. Ostroumova-Lebedeva and in the workshops of D. N. Kardovskii and K. S. Petrov-Vodkin. He was a member of the Society of Easel Painters and the Four Arts group. From 1922 to 1930 he was a professor at the Moscow Vkhutemas-Vkhutein, and from 1930 to 1933 he taught at the Moscow Institute of Printing. Most of Kupreianov’s early works are wood engravings, such as Armored Cars (1918) and The Cruiser Aurora (1923), imbued with revolutionary romanticism. His drawings of the 1920’s and 1930’s on industrial subjects reflect a keen perception and a sense of the rhythm and joy of labor. Emotional immediacy and an expressive sketch are combined with a precise rendering of objects in the series Railroad Tracks (india ink, 1927, Tret’iakov Gallery) and Fishing Season (watercolor, 1930-31, Tret’iakov Gallery and the A. S. Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts in Moscow). Kupreianov’s landscapes and interiors are marked by rich tonal variations, giving them a strikingly picturesque quality, and by a subtle mood. Kupreianov did the illustrations for Lunacharskii’s Bear’s Wedding (1924), Mayakovsky’s Fairy Tale About Petia, the Fatty, and About Sima, Who Is Much Thinner (1925), Gorky’s The Artamonovs, Mother, and The Town of Okurov (1931), and Fadeev’s The Rout (1932)." from The Great Soviet Encyclopedia (1979). O'Brien won the National Book Award for Going After Cacciato, a magical-realist novel of the Vietnam war, and The Things They Carried -- an award-winning collection of related short fictions of the war -- is widely considered one of the best, if not the best, of the literary works to have come out of that war and has become part of the canon, by virtue of its inclusion in both high school and college literary reading lists. Eight long galley sheets, plus one duplicate. 7-1/2" x 19". Signed by O'Brien. Fine. Bibliographically interesting in that the galleys contain the typesetting for all the versions of the colophon, thus indicating all those for whom special copies of the publication were created. First Edition.

Three Large Photographs taken at a Gay Pride Parade

[San Francisco? 1980 - Three black and white photographs, measuring 11" x 14", laid into mat frames, with tissue guards, mounted inside three large portfolios, measuring 14.75" x 19". Each photograph has been very lightly hand-colored with tonal highlights (light pink, lavender, and blue), very sparingly and neatly applied mostly on dresses and other clothing. A fine set of compelling images of lesbian, gay, and transgender parade participants, most likely taken at a San Francisco Gay Freedom Day (Gay Pride) Parade duing the late 1970s/early 1980s. The large, close-up images include a topless woman in a studded leather harness flanked by teenage boys; two transgender women marching in drag; and a group of Native American men sitting together on a blanket (one of whom is wearing a T-shirt: "Gay American Indians") alongside children playing in a crowded park. The two women in drag are carrying handmade signs that read: "We Queen's are the first in the Kingdom we come with a message of Love & Peace understanding" and "I am Universal." Although we have been unable to positively identify where the photographs were taken, they all closely resemble Ted Sahl's famous series of photographs of the San Francisco Pride Parades taken from 1977-1984.
