Harmolodics - an autograph musical manuscript.

New York: c.1980 - Folio, single leaf of musical score paper extracted from original comb-bound volume, printed staves, titled and with eight lines of musical notation in brown felt-tip. A little browned, some light soiling, "sneaker" print verso?, top corners creased and small piece of cellophane tape top right, but overall very good. A remarkable piece, we can trace no other Ornette Coleman musical manuscript ever having appeared on the market. Written in brown felt-tip, the sheet is inscribed lower right in black ink: "To Anthony / Thanks For Everything / Ornette Coleman." Harmolodics was the name that Coleman gave to his unique musical philosophy and compositional/improvisational method, which he enigmatically defined as "the use of the physical and the mental of one's own logic made into an expression of sound to bring about the musical sensation of unison executed by a single person or with a group", which applied specifically to music means that "harmony, melody, speed, rhythm, time and phrases all have equal position in the results that come from the placing and spacing of ideas" (Ornette Coleman, "Prime Time for Harmolodics" in Down Beat, July 1983, pp. 54-5). It has been suggested that Coleman drew on Boulez's concept of aleatory music for harmolodics, while early Coleman advocate Gunther Schuller suggested that it is based in the superimposition of the same or similar phrases, thus developing polytonality and heterophony. Coleman was apparently working on an expository text on harmolodics from the 70s, but this has never appeared, and the only full-ish explanation is contained in the article quoted above. He also used the name "Harmolodic" for his record label. Ornette Coleman, (1930 - 2015), was one of the most powerful and contentious innovators in the history of jazz, his work was publicly dismissed by many of the previous generation of iconoclasts, such as Monk and Miles, but actively promoted by the impeccably restrained John Lewis. Probably the best summation of the paradoxical paradigm that was Ornette Coleman comes from Mingus who said: "Now aside from the fact that I doubt he can even play a C scale in whole notes - tied whole notes, a couple of bars apiece - in tune, the fact remains that his notes and lines are so fresh. So when Symphony Sid played his record, it made everything else he was playing, even my own record that he played, sound terrible" ('The Blindfold Test', Downbeat, 28/4/1960). This piece from the collection of Anthony Murrell. Introduced to Ornette Coleman by Don Cherry, with whom he shared a loft on Christy St., Murrell assisted Coleman in sorting and archiving materials when he bought the former Public School #4, at 203 Rivington Street at Pitt on the Lower East Side in 1981, and was in the process of moving into a top-floor classroom. Coleman extracted the sheet from the material that they were working through, and inscribed it for Murrell. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

        Songs from the Stars

New York: Simon and Schuster, 1980. The original typed manuscript: the setting copy with all the editor's and proof-reader's marks. Complete book: 400 pages, 4to. Predominantly mechanically reproduced leaves, with some original typescript insertions. Original typed insertion leaves include those for the Dedication to David Hartwell; the leaf listing other books by Spinrad; and the About the Author leaf. The editorial corrections average some ten per page, and there are occasional annotations in Spinrad's hand. Songs from the Stars was Spinrad's ninth novel. Kirkus wrote: "Earth is in the post-Smash era: much of the northern hemisphere east of California is radioactive; tribes are now divided between white and black sorcery (science); chief transport is helium-winged hang gliders with pedals. Clear Blue Lou, something of a legal circuit rider, sails over to the Sunshine tribe to settle a dispute among rival Aquarians but himself settles into the druggy, free-sex nightlife for a spell before finding himself seduced by Sunshine Lou--a queen of the Word of Mouth communication network who knows (thanks to black sorcery) that her karma and Clear Blue Lou's will combine to reveal heavenly harmonies to Aquarians by means of a Big Ear satellite circling Earth with Songs from the Stars. First, however, C. B. Lou and S. Lou must accompany black sorcerer Harker to Big Ear, where they find the satellite crew dead. Debates on communications and karma ensue. Gassy."

        Waiting for the Barbarians.

London: Secker & Warburg, 1980. Second printing preceding the South African first of this modern classic. Octavo, original cloth. Signed by J.M. Coetzee on the title page. Fine in a fine dust jacket with a touch of toning to the spine. Waiting for the Barbarians is an allegory of oppressor and oppressed. Not just a man living through a crisis of conscience in an obscure place in remote times, the Magistrate is an analogue of all men living in complicity with regimes that ignore justice and decency. "I have known few authors who can evoke such a wilderness in the heart of a man.... Mr. Coetzee knows the elusive terror of Kafka" (Bernard Levin, The Sunday Times).

Crown Point Press., Oakland, California. 1980 - Artist book, published in an edition of only 10 copies (+6 artistÕs proofs), each numbered and signed by Steir on the final blank. Whilst the prints were executed in 1977, and dated as such, the book was not published until 1980. Pat SteirÕs quiet, early works - word/image prints inspired by the randomness of John CageÕs musical compositions both in design and subtlety - challenged definitions of art, and particularly printmaking and drawing. Abstract marks, images, and words are scattered across the sheet with equal weight. Having written poetry before learning to paint, Steir considers drawing and writing as one and the same. Throughout the 1970s Steir narrowed her research to focus on art itself, making drawings and prints in her own version of MinimalismÕs geometric and serial formats, exploring the parameters of a mark with a drawn frame. The artist book ÔWordÕ is symptomatic of this early period in SteirÕs career, with its focus on the study of details in language. She examines the differences between words and images, and presents isolated words and images within the regulated grids of her prints. Illustrated with five drypoint etchings, the final one with aquatint. Each of the prints are dated (1977) and signed by the artist with her initials in pencil. Each are additionally hand-coloured by the artist, mostly by notations added in the margins of the prints. Bound in original printed boards by Kevin Parker. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Prominent members of New York's No Wave film scene and, along with Amos Poe and Eric Mitchell, progenitors of the Cinema of Transgression, Beth and Scott B were a pivotal and galvanizing force in that era's explosion of punk-political filmmaking.         "absolut Ruscha": Absolut Vodka Limited Edition Lithograph

St. Augustine, FL: Absolut Vodka (Manufacturer) /Absolute Americana Art Gallery(1980). First Edition / First Printing. As New in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 1 pages. Rare Ed Ruscha and Absolut advertising collectible set. A pristine copy of the "Absolut Ruscha" original vintage lithograph/print, signed, dated, and framed by Ed Ruscha. Comes with the most comprehensive collection of Absolut's ground-breaking advertising throughout the campaign's history. "Absolut Ruscha" is an original artwork-rendition of the "Absolut Ruscha" print advertisement and should not be confused with the latter. It was specially produced in a small and limited edition of 200 copies. It is now rare. A brilliant production by Ed Ruscha: Giant-sized offset lithograph. The piece measures 33 X 45 inches. Custom-framed in museum-quality, UV-protectant glass, and austerely elegant black wood. The framed size is slightly larger. Printed on pristine-white, thick uncoated stock paper in the United States to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents, in a stunningly beautiful oversize format, Ed Ruscha's "Absolut Ruscha". One of the finest creations in Absolut Vodka's highly original and immensely influential advertising campaign. "Absolut Ruscha" is sly and sinister in its simplicity: The artist has adapted his famous "Wolf" painting, altering it slightly as the shadow of the tilted Absolut bottle. It comes with the most comprehensive collection of Absolut print, poster, and postcard advertisements throughout the campaign's long run that we have ever seen, all of them in fine to pristine condition, gathered and preserved over the years by one avid collector. Yes, of course, individual copies of the advertisements are (erratically) available online. Collecting them one-by-one is not so much costly and time-consuming as potentially a fool's errand because almost all of the advertisements appeared exactly once. So most of them are now rare. Individually and collectively, the Absolut Vodka advertisement is inspired by the shape of the bottle itself and how its angularity reflects the best that contemporary culture has to offer. Absolut is the one brand that has fascinated, engaged, and involved nearly every major Western writer, artist, photographer, composer, pop-culture trendsetter, and public icon of the last quarter of the 20th century. Absolut pays homage to the achievement of Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, Maurizio Cattelan, and Ken Scharf as well as Philip Glass, Susan Sontag, Philip Johnson, and the creators of "South Park", to name a handful from among literally thousands of contributors who have participated in the campaign over the years, most of whom would not even consider appearing in a commercial. As such, no other advertising campaign has consistently aspired to the level of art while becoming the third biggest liquor brand in the world. Ed Ruscha's contribution is Absolut-ly beautiful, and shows yet again that every Ed Ruscha creation is a collectible work of art. An Absolut "must-have" Ed Ruscha vintage piece. This original lithograph is very prominently and beautifully signed and dated (in the year of publication) in pencil on recto by the artist: "Ed Ruscha 1980". It comes with the Certificate of Authenticity: Issued with Ed Ruscha's prior consent, the appraised value of the unframed lithograph by itself and at the time of release thirty-five years ago (1980) was $3200. This item is a contemporary art classic. As far as we know, this is the only such framed copy of the Limited-Edition Lithograph available online and has no flaws, a pristine beauty. It comes with the most comprehensive collection of Absolut print, poster, and postcard advertisements throughout the campaign's long run that we have ever seen, all of them in fine-to-pristine condition. Please note: Almost all of the advertisements appeared exactly once. Most of them are now rare. This collection gathers them as one set, probably the best and most complete of its kind available online. A rare signed copy thus. Hundreds of printed materials, 1 original lithograph. One of the greatest artists of our time. A fine collectible set. (PLEASE NOTE: SHIPPING WILL BE AT ACTUAL COST. LOCAL PICK-UP OR DELIVERY AVAILABLE BY ARRANGEMENT).

Collection of five titles by the Czech samizdat series "Edice Kvart" (Quarto Editions)

Czech Republic: [Edice Kvart], 1980. Octavos (ca. 21 × 21 cm each). Original publisher's binding using patterned wallpaper and color cardboard; one title with paper spine label; colored endpapers; typescript carbon copies to rectos, on thin rice paper. All very good or better. One of the key publishing efforts of Czechoslovak samizdat was Edice Kvart, organized around 1975 by poet and translator Jan Vladislav (1923-2009), who had been unable to publish his own work since 1948. In total, nearly 120 titles appeared, each in the characteristic square format, which was not only aesthetically pleasing but also more practical for the typists. The edition was unusual for samizdat in its nearly bibliophilic stress on design: wallpapers were used for the card wrappers, and original photographs were included whenever possible. The "print run" of each title was small and ranged from one to three transcripts (resulting in circa 11-33 copies). Looking back, Vladislav later described the enormous effort associated with producing each edition, which took from seven to ten days on average and required painstaking corrections, collation, and binding. Vladislav also cut the pages by hand and bound most of the volumes, as he feared taking the texts to professional binders. The edition ceased to exist shortly after Vladislav was forced into exile in 1981. Included are: 1. Chalupecký, Jindřich. Richard Weiner a český Expresionismus [Richard Weiner and Czech Expressionism]. [Prague: Edice Kvart], 1979. [2], 81 leaves. This edition not in KVK, OCLC, which show a variant samizdat edition published the same year. 2. Michaux, Henri. Prostor uvnitř [The Space Within]. Translated by Jan Vladislav. Prague: [Edice Kvart], 1979. 172 pp. [2], 2-172 leaves. Signed and inscribed by the translator and editor on the front flyleaf, with an additional signature beneath the colophon. Not in KVK, OCLC, which only show a recent reissue of this translation. 3. Seifert, Jaroslav. Děštník z Piccadilly [An Umbrella from Piccadilly]. Prague: [Edice Kvart,] 1980. [4], 2-78 leaves. Original photograph frontispiece (affixed to page). Signed by the author on the title page. One of Seifert's later collections of poems, first published in 1979 in samizdat form. Not in KVK, OCLC, which only show the same text in an edition by Edice Petlice (no. 148). 4. Seifert, Jaroslav. Morový sloup [The Plague Column]. Prague: [Edice Kvart,] 1980. [3], 4-81 leaves. With a photographic print (a contemporary portrait of the author). Signed by the author on the title page. Seifert's famous cycle of poems about the years after the Soviet occupation, completed between 1968 and 1970 and only publishable in samizdat for over a decade. In 1984, Seifert (1901-1986) became the first Czech writer to receive the Nobel Prize. Not in KVK, OCLC. 5. Vladislav, Jan. Samomluvy [Soliloquies]. Prague: [Edice Kvart,] 1980. [3], 4-50 leaves. Signed and inscribed by the author on the title page; with handwritten corrections to the pagination. First edition of this collection of poems by Jan Vladislav, the initiator of the Edice Expedice. No more than 10-12 copies were published of Vladislav's own work, which was typically meant for circulation among close friends only. Not in KVK, OCLC, which only show two copies issued by Edice Expedice (no. 118).

Original variant colors of cloth with black, respectively gilt lettering on spines with original photo-illustrated cream colored dustjackets. Frontispieces, three in color. "In 1902 the Egyptian Antiquities Service (now called the Supreme Council of Antiquities) granted permits for scientific excavations at the royal pyramids and private mastaba tombs of Giza. The American team under George A. Reisner (1867-1942), eventually became the Joint Egyptian Expedition of Harvard University and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, in 1905, and continued almost uninterrupted until Reisner's death in 1942. The Expedition formally closed in 1947. Despite the publication of his monumental History of the Giza Necropolis I-II, Reisner was unable to see through the press an additional 5,000 pages of unpublished manuscript (Giza Necropolis II, III, IV), or begin the tomb-by-tomb publication series he originally envisioned. This task was initiated by William Kelly Simpson in the early 1970s in the form of the Giza Mastabas Series. The goal of the project is to continue and complete the publication of Reisner's excavations at Giza, fully documenting the mastaba tombs with descriptive text, hieroglyphic translations, facsimile line drawings, plans, sections, and photographs." (Museum of Fine Arts Boston). Monumental undertaking producing an exceptional publication with fascinating b/w photographs, plans and line drawings throughout, many of the figurative plates fold out. Previous owner's name inked to inside front cover of first, exlibris' in second and third volume. Light musty odor to first volume. DJs, bindings and interior in overall very good+ condition.

Church Poems. With illustrations by John Piper. (FIRST STATE, DELUXE ISSUE)

John Murray, London(1980). The deluxe issue of the withdrawn first edition, of which one hundred copies were produced and bound, and virtually all destroyed prior to publication. This copy signed on the colophon by John Betjeman, but not numbered, and without Piper's signature, who presumably was due to sign them later. Due to a production error, the last seven lines of the poem 'Bristol and Clifton', the two full pages of the poem 'Sunday Afternoon Service in St Enodoc Church, Cornwall' were omitted, resulting in both the trade issue and this deluxe issue being destroyed and corrected editions issued the following year. John Murray claimed that all but half a dozen copies of the trade edition were destroyed, although the actual number of survivors is almost certainly higher. This deluxe edition is certainly a great deal scarcer, Peterson identified a surviving typescript (the printer's copy) of the colophon sheet, so signed by Betjeman and with a note by Murray stating that "The signed copy also had to be destroyed of Church Poems!" This present copy however, formally belonging to Dorothy Couzens [née Liptrap], a production assistant and some-time illustrator at John Murray Ltd. between 1960-1985, is the entire text, cut from the watered silk binding (presumably re-cycled for the corrected edition) and with the original marbled endpapers now serving as makeshift wrappers. 8vo. 63pp. Top edge gilt. A very good copy - scarce as proverbial hen's teeth, this being quite probably the only surviving example of the deluxe issue of the withdrawn text.. Book Condition: Very Good. Binding: Hardcover

Lucien Clergue: Matador ("bullfighter") : The Exhibition Poster

Paris, France: Self-Published(1980). First Edition / First Printing. Fine in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 1 pages. Rare Lucien Clergue collectible piece. A framed poster of his classic "Matador" Exhibition Poster (circa 1980), signed by Lucien Clergue. There is no ISBN. The Poster is vintage, and is now rare. Poster size is 17 X 23 inches. Framed size is 18 X 24 inches. Professionally framed on solid black wood and Plexiglas by Craig Cotsones/Stephen Daiter Gallery Chicago. Eminently suitable for display. Printed on archival, thick coated stock paper in Paris, France to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Lucien Clergue's "Matador". An exquisite reproduction of his image of a Spanish "torero"/bullfighter. It is brilliantly cropped: We do not see his face, as is usually the case, only his torso and famously elaborate accoutrement: Costume, red cape, and shiny sword, in a balletic pose. The elegant image is in contrast with Clergue's sequence in "Toros Muertos" (1966), where he depicts the bull as hapless victim (rather than something ferocious or fearful) : The "toro" is shown in visible pain, dying a slow, agonizing death, dead, and finally, a carcass hanging in an abattoir. For the philosophical Clergue, the bullfighter, the bull, and their duel represent the struggle called life itself: "In the concept of the universe, life and death are on the same level, on the same line, in the same hour. Still, between the two, there is so much to be seen and done: Let us try to discover the secret world of our nature" (Lucien Clergue). This "secret world" shows Man as capable of less-than-human, "animal" barbarism and Animal as his human-like victim. "The Monet of the camera" (Pablo Picasso). An absolute "must-have" collectible, not just memorabilia, item for Lucien Clergue collectors. This framed copy of the "Matador" Exhibition Poster is magnificently signed in black pen-marker directly underneath the image by Lucien Clergue. Clergue's signature on this poster is vintage, NOT contemporary, and it's the best we have ever seen: Big, bold, and beautiful. As far as we know, this is the only such signed copy of the Exhibition Poster available online, is professionally framed on solid black wood and Plexiglas, and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Lucien Clergue vintage prints command thousands of dollars from galleries and online. This vintage poster is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. 1 framed poster. Lucien Clergue's "Toros Muertos" was selected as one of the greatest photography books in "The Photobook". One of the greatest artist/photographers of our time. A fine collectible poster. (SEE ALSO OTHER LUCIEN CLERGUE TITLES IN OUR CATALOG).

        A Confederacy of Dunces

Baton Rouge: Louisiana State University Press, 1980. Fifth printing of the author's Pulitzer Prize-winning masterpiece. Octavo, original cloth. Lenthily inscribed by the author's mother on the front free endpaper, "December 10, 1981 Appreciation and Regards from John Kennedy Toole's Mother, Thelma Ducoing Toole, to Dear Chip Ford." Foreword by Walker Percy. Fine in near fine price-clipped dust jacket. Jacket illustration by Ed Lindlof. A very nice example, uncommon signed. A masterwork . . . the novel astonishes with its inventiveness . . . it is nothing less than a grand comic fugue" (The New York Times Book Review). "A masterwork . . . the novel astonishes with its inventiveness . . . it is nothing less than a grand comic fugue" (The New York Times Book Review). The book's passage to success began in 1976 when John Kennedy Toole's mother Thelma, using a walker, hobbled into the office of the novelist Walker Percy at Loyola University. She was followed by a chauffeur carrying a manuscript that she told Mr. Percy was a ''masterpiece.'' Percy agreed to read it. He became entranced and decided that the novel was ''a major achievement, a huge comic-satiric-tragic one-of-a-kind rendering of life in New Orleans.'' After some more publishers rejected the book, Louisiana State University Press agreed to take a chance with a first printing of just 2,500 copies. It sold about 50,000 copies in hard cover and nearly 600,000 in paperback within three years of publication.
