[Flyers]: 1980s-1990s California Area New Wave and Gothic Music Flyers.

Los Angeles, California. 1980-1990. A collection of 162 flyers, business cards, and handbills promoting Los Angeles New Wave, electronic, and goth venues and bands from the 1980s-1990s featuring acts such as Peter Murphy, The Cure, Voice Farm, Nina Hagen, London After Midnight, The Divinyls, Tokyo Vogue, and Crash Worship. The flyers are all printed on sheets measuring either 16.5" x 11" to 2.5" x 2", in various colors with several incorporating rubber-stamped elements. All items near fine with modest edgewear and light soiling. This mix features bands who kickstarted the wave of electronic music with darker themes and ethereal voices. Peter Murphy, the well-known singer of Bauhaus, started his solo career in 1983. Labeled as the "Godfather of Goth," Murphy well known for his dark and alternative appearance and music. Bringing a darker more electronic sound was the band Crash Worship. Forming in 1986 the band was from San Diego, California. Notorious for their performances the band regularly showered the crowd in paint, honey, and blood all while playing in the crowd or jumping off stage. Also pushing the goth rock scene was London After Midnight. The band formed in 1990 out of California and has been credited with reviving the goth music of the early 90s. They played several popular venues such as the Helter Skelter and the Whisky a Go-Go. They brought back the original sounds of goth music with new wave elements. Tokyo Vogue, a new wave band, also formed out of California. Their music brought a light popiness to the typical new wave sound and were popular in the local scene.Several of the venues that featured the popular New Wave and goth music became synonymous with the scene. The Helter Skelter club being one of them, was established in 1989 and has been called "The Foremost Gothic Club in Los Angeles." In its time of popularity the club presented a dark atmosphere and music to match. While not as popular today, the club still runs goth-themed nights and concerts. I -- Beam was another popular club, from 1980 to 1992 Michael Garrett was the primary DJ playing modern rock dance music by artists such as Duran Duran, The Church, Flipper, Siouxsie & The Banshees, New Order, The Cure, and Depeche Mode. One of the peculiar parts of the club was its temperature. It was kept as warm as possible to persuade the crowd to take off whatever they could in hopes to cool down. However because of this, sexual encounters in and around the club became just as popular. Sadly, the clubs popularity died down and closed in 1994. Both New wave and Goth have heavy ties with the 1970s punk rock before them. Both playing on the artsy influences and the need for youth to express themselves. The two genres sky rocked during the 80s. They dominated the dance club and concert venues of their time and while not as popular today, the music still finds its way into dance events everywhere for any occasion. A colorfully vivid look back on the music that had influenced the styles and bands of the 1980s. .

Paris: Gallimard, 1980. First French edition. Octavo, original wrappers. Signed by J.M.G. Le Clezio on the title page. In very good condition with some shelfwear and toning to the extremities. In its citation, The Nobel Committee singled out Desert stating, "This work contains magnificent images of a lost culture in the North African desert, contrasted with a depiction of Europe seen through the eyes of unwanted immigrants. The main character is a utopian antithesis to the ugliness and brutality of European society."

[Flyers]: 1980s-1990s California Punk Concert Flyers

San Francisco/Los Angeles. 1980-1990. A collection of 80 flyers, business cards, and handbills promoting Los Angeles and San Francisco Bay area punk venues and bands from the 1980s-1990s featuring acts such as Flipper, Potential Threat, Circle Jerks, The Zeros, N.O.F.X., The Leaving Train, and others. The flyers are all printed on paper sheets of various colors sized 3.5" x 4" to 13" x 19", in black ink with several incorporating rubberstamped elements. All items are near fine with tape remnants and some chips and tears from being mounted on bulletin boards and posts with light soiling. Decorated with drawings of monsters, airplanes, portraits, and close ups of body parts these flyers advertised concerts for California venues featuring local and famous punk bands. California was exploding with new punk bands from every block and corner. Small local bands became famous and progressed to influence the rest of the punk scene for later generations. Flipper, being one of the most popular bands during this time, formed in San Francisco in 1979. Flipper was notorious for their slowed-down sound that interested some but infuriated other in the scene. Noted as the forerunner to sludge metal, both Kurt Cobain from Nirvana and Eric Avery from Jane's Addiction said that Flipper influenced their music. Another band formed out of the San Francisco Bay Area was Potential Threat. The band began in 1986 and was known for their in-your-face approach to music that so many of the punk bands implemented at this time. Circle Jerks were another small band that took off quickly and became a huge success. Formed in 1979 in Los Angeles, Circle Jerks within a year of forming became one of several California punk bands to be immortalized in the documentary The Decline of Western Civilization. They influenced several artists and have been featured in a couple movies since. The Zeros were one of the most popular punk bands during the 1980s. Forming in 1976, the band's first major gig was in 1977 with The Germs playing at The Orpheum Theater. The concerts of the band often led to riots, fights, and general debauchery. They also play an entire set consisting of eight replays of "Beat Your Heart Out" in San Francisco. Though the bands was successful, it broke apart in the 1980s and has been doing small reunion tours since. Several of the venues listed on the flyers were known to feature punk, metal, goth, and many other types of music. These venues would feature Bay Area punk bands giving the local talents some limelight. The Stone opened in the 1980s and was linked to the Keystone Berkeley and Keystone Palo Alto. The venue was large enough to have 700 people at one time, sold only hard liquor at the bar, and attracted an audience with bigger hair, fishnets, and makeup. On Broadway Theater was another popular punk venue in San Francisco. It was the upstairs portion to the Mabuhay Gardens (The Mab) which featured different acts and styles of music. The venue attracted local bands and pushed some to fame during the 1980s. The Mab and On Broadway Theater closed in 1986 but has been bought and re-opened several times and different clubs for the changing scenes. A vibrant look back on the popular and local punk bands of the 1980s-1990s. .

The Land Press 1980 - LIMITED EDITION OF 400, this one out of series, signed by Christopher Isherwood, pp. [iv], 133, [4], 8vo, uncut, bound by Stuart Brockman (with his ticket) in full fabric over cushioned boards with silver plated and crystal bosses, spine in compartments, stained vellum palladium tooled lettering label, red Japanese tissue endleaves, housed in black full cloth box with velvet lining.         Waiting for the Barbarians.

London: Secker & Warburg, 1980. First edition, preceding the South African first. Octavo, original cloth. Fine in a near fine dust jacket with just a hint of sunning to the spine. Signed by J.M. Coetzee on the title page. A very bright copy, uncommon in this condition. Waiting for the Barbarians is an allegory of oppressor and oppressed. Not just a man living through a crisis of conscience in an obscure place in remote times, the Magistrate is an analogue of all men living in complicity with regimes that ignore justice and decency. "I have known few authors who can evoke such a wilderness in the heart of a man.... Mr. Coetzee knows the elusive terror of Kafka" (Bernard Levin, The Sunday Times).

[Flyers]: 1980s-1990s California Metal Concert Flyers

California. 1980-1990. A collection of 44 flyers, business cards, and handbills promoting Los Angeles metal venues and bands from the 1980s-1990s featuring acts such as Sepultura, Gwar, Saint Vitus, Abraxas, Slayer, Wool, Ulysses Siren, Raw Flower, Resistant Militia, Papa Wheelie, and others. The flyers are all printed on paper sheets of various colors sized, 2.5" x 2" to 14" x 8.5", in black ink with several incorporating rubberstamped elements. All items have slight edgewear and soiling else near fine or better.Decorated with various band's typographical names and designs, the posters illustrate tombs, zombies, devils, witches, and the band members. One flyer's illustration is of a sacrilegious nun forcing a cross into her arm; this flyer is for the band Wool. Wool was based out of California and mixed the sounds of hard rock, punk, and psychedelia making them versatile in the bands they accompanied. Another more versatile band was Ulysses Siren which formed in 1983 in South San Francisco. Two years after forming the band's demo Terrorist Attack was featured on KUSF radio and at the Record Vault for becoming the number 1 selling underground demo. Saint Vitus was another widely popular underground band from the Los Angeles area. Forming in 1979, the band has been credited as one of the first bands of the doom metal genre. Slayer formed in 1981 as a thrash metal band from California. In 1986 the band rose to fame and has been labeled as one of the "Big Four" thrash metal bands. Their lyrics and album art included themes of necrophilia, anti-religion, war, Satanism, and murder. This often led to bans on Slayer's music and criticism from parents and religious groups. The venues that housed these bands were known for their underground shows. The Jabberjaw was a coffee house and music venue in Los Angeles, California. It featured underground all-ages rock, metal, and punk shows. Jabberjaw released four, seven inch vinyl EPs which were later compiled on CD in 1994 and again in 1996. Another venue was the Reseda Country Club. In the 1950s the club started off as a drug store and later became a music venue in 1979 under Chuck Landis. The club closed in the late 1990s and today is the site of a Spanish-language Christian church.A fascinating collection of metal flyers from California featuring popular and underground acts during the 1980s-1990s. .

Ernst Jünger (* 29. März 1895 in Heidelberg; + 17. Versand D: 5,00 EUR

Lewis Baltz: Park City (First Edition, in publisher's shrink wrap) [IMPERFECT]

Artspace Press and Castelli Graphics, Albuquerque, New Mexico and New York 1980 - First edition, first printing. Hardcover. Fine cloth, with photographically illustrated dust jacket. Photographs by Lewis Baltz. Essay by Gus Blaisdell (in English). Designed by Jack W. Stauffacher. 246 pp. with 102 duotone plates. 10-7/8 x 11-1/4 inches. This edition was limited to 3000 hardbound copies. Out of print.[Cited in Martin Parr and Gerry Badger, The Photobook: A History, Volume II. (London and New York: Phaidon, 2006).]. As New in Near Fine dust jacket, in original publisher's shrink-wrap (dust jacket has moderate wear to the extremities, stray surface marks, small abrasions and/or rubbing; all pages and plates not affected). While Lewis Baltz is perhaps best known for his New Industrial Parks near Irvine, California series, Park City might be a better candidate as the magnum opus of the artist's early work. Not merely representative of the stylistic and conceptual framework of the photographic movement he helped to define, Park City is the single most exhaustive and far-reaching visual criticism of 1970s-era American real estate development: the book is thus the New Topographics document par excellence. The book's 102 plates (Baltz defines the Series as "a sequential work of 102 elements") first take the viewer through overall site views that set up a jarring contrast between the mountains (already carved up for the ski area) and the freshly built condominiums and houses that soon will take over the landscape.Moving through the pages, the plates begin to focus more and more on the excavation and earth moving efforts that precede building; the mounds of earth, littered with construction debris, are but pitiful doubles of the mountains in the background. As Baltz takes us closer in, we can begin to discern the buildings themselves: dreadful echoes of The Tract Houses clumped together and rising ostentatiously from the once verdant valley floor. A little over halfway into the book, we're brought inside the still-under-construction homes, where images of more debris mingle with dingy interior views that invoke claustrophobia rather than inviting living spaces. A fireplace wall covered with a vapor barrier, too-small windows, miles of wood studs and endless drywall combine to suggest an oppressive blandness.By the time one arrives at the book's final plate, a feeling of pity for the eventual inhabitants of these spaces begins to emerge. And in the final image, we see just how many of these properties have been sold on a map dotted with push pins of varying colors, indicating the status of each lot in the subdivision. Recalling the book's first plate, a distant view of the landscape dotted with structures, this map is a satisfying final image, in that it represents the complete transformation of the landscape into an abstract, flat object--not unlike Baltz's photographs themselves. The centerpiece of a loosely conceived trilogy that began with the New Industrial Parks and ended with San Quentin Point, Park City embodies the best, most incisive and considered qualities of both, and stands as the finest publication by one of the most important of contemporary artists. In his philosophical essay on the work of Lewis Baltz, Gus Blaisdell rigorously examines the very nature of photography and its relationship to the physical world. Blaisdell systematically unclutters and demystifies previous attempts at understanding photographs of the real world, representation and perception, stripping bare all "gobbledegook" and "rigamarole" of various intellectual stabs. and he does it in a way that invites the reader along on his mind-bending ride. That's Gus. No critical writer comes close. The essay is essential reading for anyone seriously interested in photography. From the publisher: "During 1978 and 1979 Lewis Baltz, one of America's foremost contemporary photographers, undertook to document the building of a rapidly growing ski resort and second-home development east of Salt Lake City in Utah's Wasatch Mountains. His concern was to [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Abbott, a schoolmaster wrote the book as a satirical novella in 1884 under the pseudonym "A Square." The relatively unsuccessful public reception of the original was rejuvenated when Einstein's general theory of relatively discussed the fourth dimension, and Abbott's work appeared prophetic with his intuition of time to explain certain phenomena. The work describes a society rigidly divided into classes closeted in two dimensions, whereas the narrator envisions a multidimensional world. The physical construction of the book, a rectangular aluminum channeled frame, hinged at one corner, and latched with the interior adds a visual dimension.       New York, Beate Klarsfeld Foundation. 1980. Paperback. 1st edition, first printing. Original Paper wrappers, Oblong 4to, [128] pages, mostly illustrations. 23 x 31 cm. Text in English. The rare first edition of the what came to be one of the most important photographic records of the Holocaust. It was not offered for sale, but was published by the Klarsfeld foundation in a limited run of 1000 copies and distributed to a select list of libraries and institutions. ?"The Auschwitz Album is a unique photographic record of the Holocaust of the Second World War. A collection of photographs taken inside a Nazi German death camp, it is the only surviving pictorial evidence (with the exception of four surreptitious photographs taken by Sonderkommandos) of the extermination process from inside the Auschwitz-Birkenau Nazi concentration camp…. The album has 56 pages and 193 photographs. …The images follow the processing of newly arrived Hungarian Jews from Carpatho-Ruthenia in the early summer of 1944. They document the disembarkation of the Jewish prisoners from the train boxcars, followed by the selection process, performed by doctors of the SS and wardens of the camp, which separated those who were considered fit for work from those who were to be sent to the gas chambers. The photographer followed groups of those selected for work, and those selected for death to a birch grove just outside the crematoria where they were made to wait before being killed. The photographer also documented the workings of an area called Canada, where the looted belongings of the prisoners were sorted before transport to Germany. The album's survival is remarkable, given the strenuous efforts made by the Nazis to keep the ?'Final Solution?' a secret. Also remarkable is the story of its discovery. Lili Jacob (later Lili Jacob-Zelmanovic Meier) was selected for work at Auschwitz-Birkenau while the other members of her family were sent to the gas chambers. The Auschwitz camp was evacuated by the Nazis as the Soviet army approached. Jacob passed through various camps, finally arriving at the Dora concentration camp, where she was eventually liberated. Recovering from illness in a vacated barracks of the SS, Jacob found the album in a cupboard beside her bed. Inside, she found pictures of herself, her relatives, and others from her community. The coincidence was astounding, given that the Nordhausen-Dora camp was over 640 km (400 mi) away, and that over 1, 100, 000 people were killed at Auschwitz…. Nazi-hunter Serge Klarsfeld visited Lili in 1980 and convinced her to donate the album to Yad Vashem. The album's contents were first published that year in the book The Auschwitz Album, edited by Klarsfeld?" (Wikipedia, 2014) . Includes laid in copies of articles and promotional items from 1980 about the book. SUBJECT(S) Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945) -- Pictorial works. Ex-library with usual markings.         The Farce of Sodom by The Right Honourable Earl of Rochester. Written for the Royall Company of Whoremasters and printed a-new upon the Three Hundredth Anniversary of the untimely Demise of our Noble Author in the thirty-third year of his Life. With Sets and Costumes suitable for Theatrical Performances designed by Donald Friend.

Melbourne, Gryphon Books, 1980. - Folio (390 x 290 mm); pp. 67; illustrated endpapers, numerous b/w sketch illustrations throughout, 19 tipped-in plates (all but one in colour); original half black morocco and maroon velvet, title lettered in gilt on spine, slipcase, a fine copy. 'Rochester's Lyrical, lewd & licentious poems were circulated only in manuscript during his lifetime. The earliest printed Editions appeared a year after his Death. But "The Farce of Sodom" was never printed in England. For centuries its fame (or notoriety) depended on crude Continental imprints. Consequently, in England "Sodom" was a sort of obscene literary rumour, like Sullivan's ( - or was it Gilbert's?) suppressed "Sod's Opera", except to those who had privileged access to a few manuscript copies, only two of which are known to have survived until the present day. Thus this Edition is issued with a handwritten Text in keeping with the Manuscript tradition' (Editor's Note). The calligraphy is also by Donald Friend. The edition is limited to only 250 copies signed by the artist; this is number 96.

1980 Archive of Long Island Nude Beach Photographs

[New York] 1980 - Approximately 700 different color snapshot images of beachgoers on a very crowded Long Island beach in 1980. Each image is approximately 3.5" x 5". Virtually all are on Kodak paper and date stamped on the back in either June or July of 1980. Condition is generally near fine or better, several have remnants from having been mounted in an album, perhaps a couple dozen have wear or staining on the emulsion, but are still easily viewable. There is no obvious evidence of exactly where the beach was, but someone more familiar with Long Island beaches would probably be able to determine that, the products, t-shirts (including one for Plato's Retreat, another for the 1980 Lake Placid Olympics), regional beers, and other clues (frisbee advertising Niagra Falls, etc.) strongly suggest a New York City-area beach, presumably on Long Island, and possibly Jones Beach. The very crowded and not particularly tidy beach was presumably clothing optional as a majority (but not all) of the sun worshippers are either partially or fully naked. The photographer seemed particularly interested in the female form. The candid images suggest that many who were happy to be photographed, with a few looking at least mildly annoyed by the attention, and a few more intimate shots that were presumably taken surreptitiously. Apparently the beach was something of a phenomenon, as a few shots show photographers, a television crew, a (possibly news) helicopter, and a boatload of gawkers on the outskirts of the beach, as well as a mounted policeman. The crowd represents a broad cross section of the population: racially, economically, age-wise, and by sexual orientation, although the ratio of images of affectionate lesbians seems a little inordinate to the rest of the images - presumably for the titillation of the (almost certainly male) photographer. Additionally there are a modest number of heterosexual affection on display, although in very few or perhaps even none of the cases do the affections displayed seem strictly pornographic. In any event a very interesting time capsule-type cross section of a clothing optional beach in Long Island definitively dated to 1980, the year of Abscam, the beginning of the presidency of Ronald Reagan, and the death of John Lennon.
