        Kaddish and Other Poems

Fine. INSCRIBED BY GINSBERG to his professor at the New School, Elbert Lenrow: "For Elbert Lenrow" and signed "Allen Ginsberg" beneath his name. Ginsberg also included a full-page ink drawing on the inside front cover. In his later letters to the poet, Lenrow repeatedly urges Ginsberg to visit and sign the books ("Having bought your books for a long time, I now have more than a dozen by or about you, and it's my hope that you will sometime add to their uniqueness by inscribing them with appropriate 'Blakean' reflections or drawings"). As the inscription is dated 1980, Ginsberg apparently fulfilled his friend's wish, and included an interesting "Blakean" drawing on the inside front cover. Eleventh printing. San Francisco: City Lights Books, February 1970. Book near-fine with minor wear. Interesting association copy.

Collection of approximately 30 typed and autograph letters and postcards from Helen G. Coates, Bernstein's first piano teacher and personal assistant for most of his adult life, to Madeline Hsu (Forte), pianist and wife of musicologist Allen Forte

. The letters, written ca. 1980-85, are particularly interesting for Coates's comments on the music and activities of Bernstein during the period. The correspondence also discusses the legacy of the pianist and teacher Rosina Lhevinne as well as other musical and personal matters. Included are 3 letters from Lhevinne's student and video-biographer Salome Arkatov.. "Bernstein's legacy looms large in each area that he worked. West Side Story remains his most important work, but his mastery of the Broadway idiom is just as clear in his other shows. Mass remains a powerful piece and is finding new audiences. Bernstein's concert music includes many enduring works, especially Chichester Psalms, and orchestral pieces based upon his popular shows also continue to be programmed. His fame as a conductor has barely diminished since his death, and many of his recordings remain critically and commercially popular. That he will also be remembered as one of America's most important musical educators seems certain." Paul R. Laird and David Schiff in Grove online Coates was Bernstein's first piano teacher of note; he began his studies with her at the age of 14.

        Au verso des images

Éditions Fata Morgana 1980 - Copy 12/40. Full brown box calf with thin oxidized brass quadrilaterals suspended on copper wire. Housed in a custom chemise and leather-edged slipcase. Bound by Christine Giard in 2003. 14.75 x 22.5 cmMichel Leiris (1901-1990) was a French surrealist writer, ethnographer, poet, and art critic who refused the French Grand Prix for literature in 1980, the same year this book was published. Au verso des images is a work of art criticism comprising five essays, each on one artist: Bacon, Giacometti, Lascaux, Picasso, and Masson. Printed in a limited edition of 1000 with five lettered copies on Vergé de Barcelone, copies 1-40 on Vergé pur de fils d’Arches, and 955 on Vergé teinté.Christine Giard has been studying and teaching bookbinding for over 35 years. Her formal academic background is in the sciences, but her true love has always been the arts: literature, drawing, painting, music, and nature photography. Christine discovered bookbinding while she was creating floral art, one of many ways she found to combine art with her love of nature. In bookbinding, Christine found the perfect combination of her interests and talents. She immerses herself completely in the combination of the precision required in binding structures of all kinds, the attributes of the (mostly) natural materials involved, the freedom to choose or create the materials she uses to realize her designs, and the opportunities to never, ever stop learning. Her passion and creativity is evident in her bindings. Christine’s design aesthetic leans toward minimalism, but her use of unexpected techniques and materials create a tightly controlled tension that makes her work vibrate with energy.Christine is trained in trade binding, design binding, restoration, conservation binding, paper-making, and several paper marbling and dyeing techniques. She loves that she can work in all of these areas and combine them as she chooses.Christine has studied with many reknowned bookbinding artists, including: Micheline de Bellefroid, Michel Richard, Hugo Peller, Edwin Heim, Vladimir Tchekeroul, Sun Evrard, Helene Jolis, Edgard Claes, and Anne Goy.         Los Angeles Punk Flyers

Los Angeles. 1980s-early1990s. A collection of 404 flyers and handbills promoting Los Angeles punk venues and bands from the mid-1980s to the early 1990s featuring acts such as, Social Distortion, Dead Kennedys, Bad Religion, and Operation Ivy. The flyers are all printed on standard sized sheets, mostly 8.5" x 11" or 4" x 6", in various colors with several incorporating rubberstamped elements. Overall near fine or better with only scattered edgewear and light soiling. This collections shows a mix of bands, both known and unknown, responsible for creating the Los Angeles brand of punk rock. Beginning in the early 1980s Los Angeles had been introduced to hardcore and started fashioning the definitive version of the genre with bands like The Mentors, T.S.O.L., and Black Flag. With this new brand of punk rock came a new, and more violent, approach to the music often resulting in police raids. This also triggered counter genres such as ska and reggae versions of punk as developed in bands like the Toasters and Bad Brains, both represented here.Numerous venues sprung up during this time including Godzilla's, Anti-Club, and a resurgence of interest in the Whisky-a-Go-Go thanks to the promotion of former Runaways manager, Kim Fowley. Formed in 1979, Anti-Club, was the brain child of Russell Jessum, Jack Marquette, and Jim Van Tyne and was home to many LA bands including many from SST Record, the label of Black Flag's Greg Ginn. Renowned for their violence, SST bands, including Black Flag, were constantly watched by police and caused some venues to put a ban on hardcore at their clubs. After roughly half a decade of angst and tension the scene collapsed on itself but emerged with groups like Hole (one early flyer featured here) with more controlled rage. However, the culture had shifted significantly with "do-it-yourself" sensibilities overriding major labels and promotion falling to the bands themselves and small scale managers utilizing makeshift flyers and art to promote the music to the masses. A vivid assemblage of 80s punk culture representing LA's burgeoning hardcore scene including a varied assortment of obscure bands that would be difficult to duplicate. .

Signed by J.M. Coetzee on the title page. A very bright copy, uncommon in this condition. Waiting for the Barbarians is an allegory of oppressor and oppressed. Not just a man living through a crisis of conscience in an obscure place in remote times, the Magistrate is an analogue of all men living in complicity with regimes that ignore justice and decency. "I have known few authors who can evoke such a wilderness in the heart of a man. Mr. Coetzee knows the elusive terror of Kafka" (Bernard Levin, The Sunday Times).         Beef Tabloid, Complete Run, Issues 1-22

Omaha and San Francisco: Beefpackers 1980-1987 - Newsprint zines. Complete run of an unusual art, music and culture zine that began its life in Omaha, Nebraska before finding home in San Francisco. At it's height, Beef reported news from South America, Europe and Asia as well as the US. Founded by two vegetarian women artists recently transplanted to Omaha, Beef's punk and DIY aesthetic covered everything from social justice movements in Central America to interviews with from figures such as Yoko Ono, Philip Glass, Fela Kuti, Gary Panter and many other international art figures. The first ten larger format issues, produced in Omaha, have a particularly hermetic punk style, perhaps a product of the editors' relative cultural isolation. Beef ceased publication in 1987 after a threatened lawsuit from a ranching trade magazine bearing the same title. Uniformly close to near fine or better with circulation fold marks and normal wear and discoloration to the delicate newsprint. Includes many color poster inserts. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Archive of early American fireworks publications

Soquel, California and Lexington, Kentucky: Various, 1980. Near Fine. A remarkable archive of American fireworks publications from 1966-1980 tracing the publishing history of a key "green man" and fireworks evangelist in the modern fireworks movement. Max P. Vander Horck started creating fireworks related publications in 1966 with "Pyronews" which lasted all of 14 issues, before disputes with the printer/publisher motivated Max to found his own publication "American Pyrotechnist" in 1968. He soon merged with "Firework News" published by Peter Colonnese, and together they ran the successful "American Pyrotechnist Fireworks News" from 1970 through 1976, at which point it was taken "in-house" by the Pyrotechnics Guild International, a guild founded along the way by Vander Horck and one that is still active today with over 3500 members according to their website. The archive contains 163 issues of Vander Horck's publications: Pyronews (14 issues, all published), American Pyrotechnist (33 issues, all published), American Pyrotechnist Firework News (69 issues, all published) and the first 40 issues of the American Pyrotechnist in it's second incarnation when it was owned by Pyrotechnist Guild International). For good measure, we include Fireworks News (7 issues, all published) which was printed by Peter Colonnense before he and Vander Horck joined forces. The whole stored in three clamshell cases with "American Pyrotechnist Fireworks News" printed on the spine. These publications are often short (4-8 pages) and offer up hints and guidance to amateurs and semi-professionals in the field. Very little if any advertising kept it focused on the evolving hobby and on things that mattered to subscribers (how to, chemical formulas, suppliers, emerging problems, news and regulations, convention news, etc). Some are period copies made to satisfy the demand for the early issues as interest in this hobby grew. Today's membership in PGI number more than 3500 - in Vander Horck's day it was closer to 300. Today the Bulletin and available back issues are only available to those with membership in PGI. Their archivist notes that PGI has "almost nothing left [for back issues] from the 70s and 80s, and few also from the 90s." One of the things we find most fun about these issues are the photographs of members holding what are no doubt highly explosive devices in each arm with a grin threatening to break the camera as they beam about their latest accomplishments. Always concerned about safety, these modern day "green men" were happily unencumbered by regulations during much of this time, and were able to just focus on what they loved. And it shows! "The Pyrotechnics Guild International was founded in 1969 by Max P. Vander Horck, then publisher of a monthly fireworks newsletter titled "American Pyrotechnist". Max envisioned the establishment of an organization for fireworks enthusiasts, whose goal would be not only to educate themselves regarding pyrotechnics, but the media, politicians and public as well. In March 1969 he announced to his subscribers that membership was available in a newly founded organization called the Pyrotechnics Guild International, and the PGI was born. The membership expanded for a few years and in 1974 a formal charter and bylaws were drawn up, officers elected, and formal incorporation accomplished (in Illinois), and the PGI became the PGI, Inc. Current membership stands at over 3,500. Members are from all walks of life, and range from people with just a passing interest all the way up to hard-core fireworks enthusiasts." (from the PGI website history section) Rare, with only a handful of these titles available in OCLC/Worldcat, nearly all at Brown University. No doubt old issues are kept "in house" in the Guild, and rarely find their way into the general market. A complete list of issues in the archive available upon request.

        Kohei Yoshiyuki. Document Park

Sebun-sha, Tokyo 1980 - "Yoshiyuki was a young commercial photographer in Tokyo in the early 1970s when he and a colleague walked through Chuo Park in Shinjuku one night. He noticed a couple on the ground, and then one man creeping toward them, followed by another. "I had my camera, but it was dark," he told the photographer Nobuyoshi Araki in a 1979 interview for a Japanese publication. Researching the technology in the era before infrared flash units, he found that Kodak made infrared flashbulbs. Yoshiyuki returned to the park, and to two others in Tokyo, through the '70s. He photographed heterosexual and homosexual couples engaged in sexual activity and the peeping toms who stalked them." cm 21x26; pp. 90; BW ills.; paperback lacking the dust jacket.         A Confederacy of Dunces (Review copy)

Baton Rouge, Louisiana: Louisiana State University Press, 1980. First edition. Fine/Fine. One of just 2500 copies printed. A Fine copy of the book apparently unread and in excellent condition. In a Fine, crisp dust jacket without chips or tears and with bright, original colors, especially the blue lettering on the spine, which is very prone to fading. Review slip from the publisher laid in. A major work of American literature, the novel depicts the satirical adventures of Ignatius J. Reilly as he saunters around New Orleans, looking for work and railing against modern culture. The book was written in the early 1960s, but wasn't published until 1980, 11 years after Toole's suicide, when the author's mother took the manuscript to Walker Percy and essentially forced him to read it. "There was no getting out of it; only one hope remained-that I could read a few pages and that they would be bad enough for me, in good conscience, to read no farther... In this case I read on. And on. First with the sinking feeling that it was not bad enough to quit, then with a prickle of interest, then a growing excitement, and finally an incredulity: surely it was not possible that it was so good." Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Literature in 1981. Fine in Fine. dust jacket.

The cover of the December 1980 issue of ""Interview"" magazine, published by Warhol, with a color portrait of Diana Vreeland, in apparent fine condition.Diana Vreeland (1903-1989) was a noted fashion columnist and editor for Harper's Bazaar (resigned) and Vogue (fired) magazines. From ""The Divine Mrs. V,"" a 2002 article in New York magazine: ""In her off hours, Vreeland was living very much in the present. Although she had a string of male companions to escort her around town, she was particularly fond of Fred Hughes, a prominent member of Andy Warhol's crowd whom Warhol described as 'one of the only young people around who insisted on Savile Row suits.' When Fred had flings with young women, Vreeland became jealous. Warhol, too, felt some jealousy; he complained that when Fred was drunk, he would 'talk like Mrs. Vreeland.' In 1986, long after Vreeland and Andy had stopped seeing each other regularly, Warhol wrote in his diary: 'I told Fred that the kitchen was dirty and he looked at me and said, ""Well, I'm not going to do the dishes."" Diana Vreeland has been a really bad influence on him. I should've broken that up.'"""

        Housekeeping

New York: Farrar Strauss Giroux, 1980. First edition. Near fine in a slightly less than near fine jacket, but better than very good, with the first state jacket showing an incremental amount of wear to the tips, a touch of wear to the jacket spine at crown and heel, some very light soiling, rubbing. A bit of the apparently inevitable fading along the top of the boards but not overly much. This copy inscribed and signed by Robinson on the half title. A solid, appealing copy of this wonderful novel, a sleeper that only very slowly gathered the acclaim and popularity it now enjoys. Quite nice.
