[Flyers]: 1980-1990 Counter Culture and Event Flyers in California Area

California. 1980-1990. A collection of 134 flyers, business cards, and handbills for 1980s-1990s stores, venues, events, and local parties throughout California. The handbills and flyers are all printed on paper sheets of various colors sized, 2.5" x 2" to 16" x 11", in black and colored ink with several incorporating rubberstamped elements. All items have slight edgewear and soiling else near fine or better. The archives features various artwork such as skulls, women, photographs, devils, coffee and beer, and various animals. One poster for a tattoo parlor, named Shamrock Studios, is decorated with monsters, dragons, warriors and a wizard with a large top hat accompanied with a sinister grin. X = ART features a wolf dancing among sheep in a sheep skin for the event's handbill. Many clubs would have a themed night for women specifically to come dressed in certain attire, "Those wearing leg hose will be admitted FREE," is written on a business card for The Mart dance club. The flyers list the venue or event titles, location, and date but also a small description of the place, "The all new, all purpose, entertainment nucleus," is written on a poster for the popular venue during this time, The Jabberjaw. The Jabberjaw was a small coffee shop and music venue that attracted people of all ages with the underground sound of the bands that would play there. One flyer features popular horror movie actresses for the first run of the hit show "Scream Queens," decorated with photos of the young women. Many places wanted cool and interesting names to attract young crowds and gain more business. Motorbooty, Hair Magic, Long Hard Rides, Psycho B*tches, DV8 Edge, and Pink Tarantula Hair are just a few of the odd names of stores and events. Aside from all the bright and colorful posters about clubbing and hook-ups there are a few for charity events. During the early 1980s AIDS became well known throughout the United States leading to large groups of people without much help. Aid & Comfort II is listed on the top of a flyer for a concert and picnic benefit for those with AIDS. It was used to not only provide awareness but also give those with AIDS a meal and place to go. A vivid look back on the creative names and designs stores, venues, and events used to attract customers on the West Coast in the decade of the 1980s-1990s. .

        The Real War

Warner Books Grosset & Dunlap Random House, 1980. Limited Numbered First Edition, First Printing. Full leather. Fine/No Jacket as Issued. A beautiful full dark red leather Limited Numbered First Edition, First Printing signed by the late U.S. President Richard Nixon on the limitation page and numbered only 156 of 2,500 Limited Edition copies. Distributed by Random House. The copyright page states "First Printing: May 1980" with a number line ending in 2, which is not an indicator of a 2nd printing but rather an indicator of a Random House First printing when coupled with the "First Printing" statement. With moire silk endpapers, gold gilt titling and page edges, and bound-in silk bookmark. Still in the original shipping carton with shipping documents, the book is in fine condition but for a few tiny tiny marks on the gilt edge, probably original to the publisher, very minor. Written five years following Nixon's resignation, Nixon regrets that by leaving office he left unfinished the work in which he believed in the most: world peace and U.S. security from another major war. This was written at a time when the Cold War with the Soviets was worsening; many things had changed since Pres. Nixon left office, but many unfortunately had not. A fascinating look into the mind of what many consider one of our most intelligent presidents. 341 pp. including an extensive index. Includes the publisher's original Certificate of Authenticity and order form. A beautiful book.

A fine copy in an excellent jacket with a few nicks and short closed tears to extremities. First facsimile edition of the first edition of Mises's Nationalökonomie. This work was "the first general treatise on economics since World War I; later it was expanded into the English-language work, Human Action (1949)" (Rothbard in ESS). F. A. Hayek wrote in his review of Nationalökonomie: "The most original and at the same time probably the most controversial developments in Professor Mises' views will ... be found in the opening parts of the book, in which he gives the outlines of a general theory of human action of which economic theory is a special part... There appears to be a width of view and an intellectual spaciousness about the whole book which are more like that of an eighteenth-century philosopher than that of a modern specialist" (Mises: An Annotated Bibliography, p. 130).

Banks' Florilegium. A publication in thirty-four parts of seven hundred and thirty-eight copperplate engravings of plants collected on Captain James Cook's first voyage round the world in H.M.S. Endeavour 1768-1771.

[Together with:] Catalogue of Banks' Florilegium. London: 1990. Folio (55.2 x 38.1 cm). 8 uncoloured engraved plates numbered in pencil 21, 121, 221, 321, 421, 521, 621 and 721. Green cloth, morocco spine lettered gilt. [With]: Banks' Florilegium's Prospectus, Subscription form and Publishing timetable. The first complete edition of the engravings after Sydney Parkinson's magnificent drawings, made in the course of captain Cook's first voyage, during which Banks collected over 800 previously unknown specimens. One of 116 numbered copies. Banks' ambition to publish the drawings made by Sydney Parkinson during the Endeavour's circumnavigation was never realised, although some 743 plates after drawings by Parkinson and others were engraved under Banks' supervision by 18 engravers, over a period of 13 years. On Banks' death, these plates were bequeathed to the British Museum, where they remain. The first publication of a substantial selection of the plates was in 1900-1905, when monochrome lithographic plates of the Australian flora were made after the original plates, and published by the British Museum as Illustrations of Australian Plants., reproducing 320 of the 743 images. This was followed in 1973 by Captain Cook's Florilegium, edited by Wilfrid Blunt and W.T. Stearn (London: 1973), which contained 42 plates pulled from the original plates and printed in black ink, and was published in a limited edition of 110 copies by the Lion and Unicorn Press; of these 110 copies, the first 10 contained 42 plates, and the remainder 30. In 1979, following successful trial printings in colour of the plates, it was agreed that Alecto Historical Editions and The British Museum (Natural History) would jointly publish the full set of 738 plates, colour printed à la poupée (i.e. by applying the colour to the plate with a cotton ball, and then adding further colour if necessary with a brush, deriving from a method developed by Johannes Tayler in the 17th century and revived by Pierre-Joseph Redouté in the early 19th century). The first volume was issued in 1980, with the final 'Catalogue' volume appearing in 1990. The appearance of the final volume, and the completion of this most ambitious artistic and scientific enterprise, was described thus in the The Book Collector: 'It is now just over ten years since the great scheme to print the Florilegium began: ten years later, and 100 sets of 738 plates, each print individually coloured, have come into existence. It is a triumph on many scores: a triumph of imagination, to conceive such an enterprise; a triumph of aesthetic sensibility, to realize that plates originally intended to be printed in black could be rendered in colour with such magical beauty, yet truth to nature; a triumph of technical skill, to restore the tarnished plates and print them with unerring precision, maintaining the same high standard from first to last [.]; a triumph, above all of tenacity to bring such a colossal enterprise [.] to a final successful conclusion' (p.9). Of the 116 sets of Banks' Florilegium printed, 3 were printers' proof sets (of which number 1 is at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew), 3 w [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Storie di terra (dal 1980 ad oggi)

, , . Ottimo (Fine). Fotografia originale in bianco e nero timbrata, titolata e firmata a penna al verso (Storie di terra, dal 1980 ad oggi. Mario Giacomelli, Via Mastai 24, 60019 Senigallia, An). Cm 39,5,7x29,5. . Ottimo (Fine). .

Hand-made SIGNED Greetings Card, designed for the Harrison family.

No place [Henley], n.d. [1980s]., 1980. George Harrison's own Christmas card, given to his groundskeeper. Dimensions 7 x 5.1 inches approx. Portrait format. Privately manufactured from card, foil, paper and metallic paint with a ribbon and tassle. Chiffon material soldered beneath a die-cut 'sun' motif with a hand-written seasonal message in gold ink in a Gothic calligraphic style on textured red paper pasted within the card. George has inscribed below, in blue ballpoint; 'To Maurice, Sylvia and Family / love from George'. Additionally signed below by Olivia and Dhani Harrison. Fine condition. The solar card design clearly refers to Harrison's spiritual view of 'the sun'; the worship of the sun as a deity is an important part of Hindu religion, to which George had converted and to which he introduced his fellow Beatles; he practised meditation, met several gurus, embraced traditional Indian music and his ashes were scattered in the Ganges in a private ceremony according to his Hindu beliefs. In 1969, Harrison wrote 'Here Comes the Sun', one of his best-known tracks, which reflected the continued influence of Indian classical music on his songwriting. Provenance; Ex Christies, Rock and Pop, no.9919 lot 156.

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (Inscribed First Edition)

Harmony Books, New York 1980 - Inscribed by the author on the half-title page: " To Dave, Best wishes | Douglas Adams." Fine and unread in a Fine dust jacket with a little crinkle at the top of the spine and one 1/4 inch closed tear at the base of the rear panel. Withal, an exceptional copy. The author's first book, and first in the series. "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" is an off-beat, sci-fi adventure book generally regarded as one of the most hilarious books written in the last fifty years. It has been wildly successful through its various radio, TV, stage, and film adaptations with millions of fans worldwide. A superb copy of this classic work of science fiction. "Humorous science fiction novels have notoriously limited audiences. The ''Hitchhiker's Guide'' is a delightful exception, being written for anyone who can understand the thrill that might come to a crew of interstellar explorers who discover a mysterious planet, dead for five million years, and then hear on their ''sub etha'' radio a ghostly voice, hollow, reedy, insubstantial: ''Greetings to you. . This is a recorded announcement, as I'm afraid we're all out at the moment. .'' (Contemporary New York Times Review). Fine in Fine dust jacket. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]
