A Model of Leptons

American Physical Society Physical Review Letters: American Physical Society. 1st Edition. Soft cover. Fine. FIRST EDITION of Steven Weinberg's model of the electroweak force, one of the essential components of the standard model of particle physics. Weinberg shared the 1979 Nobel Prize in Physics for his "contribution to the theory of the unified and weak electromagnetic interaction." "As Steven Weinberg tells the story, there was Isaac Newton's theory of gravity, 'intended to explain the movements of the celestial bodies and how such things as apples fall to the ground; and there was James Clerk Maxwell's account of electromagnetism as a way to explain light, radiation, magnetism, and the forces that operate between electrically charged particles.'" The quantum revolution "introduced two new forces, both operating at very short range, within the nucleus of the atom. The strong force holds the particles of the nucleus together and is very strong... The other is known as the weak force, which is responsible for radioactive decay. And so, until the 1960s there were four forces that needed to be reconciled: gravity, electromagnetism, the strong nuclear force, and the weak radioactive force" (Peter Watson, The Modern Mind). At Berkeley in 1967, "Weinberg produced a gauge theory that correctly predicted electromagnetic and weak nuclear forces. This was later to become known as the electroweak theory. In his paper, 'A model of leptons', he showed that although electromagnetism is much stronger than the weak force of everyday energies, the only way to devise a theory of the weak force is to include the electromagnetic force. Weinberg showed how what was seemingly impossible could be achieved and the forces could be unified through the interchange of particles in spite of the difference in their strengths. Abdus Salam had independently reached the same conclusions and what became known as the Weinberg-Salam model was a major advance on earlier models that had originally been applied to leptons... In 1979 Weinberg shared the Nobel Prize for Physics for this work with Salam and his old school friend Sheldon Glashow, who had extended the work that Weinberg and Salam had independently developed" (Chris Cooper, Physics). The discovery and description of the electroweak force has been confirmed experimentally and now is one of the essential elements of the "standard model" of particle physics. "By 1988, Weinberg's three-page paper in the Physical Review was the most frequently cited paper in elementary particle physics since the end of World War II" (Lightman, The Discoveries). Particle Physics: One Hundred Years of Discoveries; Brian Greene, The Elegant Universe. In: Physical Review Letters, Vol. 19, 1967, pp. 1264-66. Quarto, modern wrappers (without original wrappers); custom box. Fine condition.

        STARART ("STAR ART")

Alberta, Canada: Starart Productions Limited, 1979. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. Fine/No Dust Jacket, As Issued.. Alberta, Canada: Starart Productions Limited, 1979. Hardcover. Fine/None, As Issued. First Edition/First Printing. 239 pages. Collection of art by pop and rock music icons. One of the finest collections of its kind ever published. Limited Edition of 300 numbered and signed copies. Precedes and should not be confused with the regular trade edition. The edition is now very rare. A brilliant production by Debby Chesher: Oversize-volume format in oblong shape. Maroon leatherette boards with gilt titles embossed on the cover and spine and gilt page edges, as issued. Art by Joni Mitchell, John Mayall, Cat Stevens, Klaus Voormann, Ronnie Wood, and Commander Cody. Each artist contributes his or her own text, interviews, and captions as well as supplementary materials such as vintage photographs and preliminary sketches. Matching leatherette slipcase. Printed on thick coated stock paper in Canada to absolutely the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents in the most collectible format possible the original art of six "Hall of Fame" pop and rock music figures. Joni Mitchell, Cat Stevens, and Ronnie Wood (of the Rolling Stones) are surely the most iconic. Still, the art of John Mayall, Klaus Voormann, and Commander Cody are eye-openers that complete the picture, as it were, of the time during the latter part of the 20th century when many musician/composers, lyricists, singers, and performers were also immensely talented, imaginative, and (especially in the case of Joni Mitchell) truly great visual artists. All of Mitchell's album covers showcase her delicately beautiful art, the perfect complement to her anthem-songs. One of her most ardent fans was Andy Warhol, and the originals fetch tens of thousands of dollars (if you can still find them). The styles run the gamut of contemporary art: Figurative, representational, semi-abstract, abstract, Folk Art, Pop Art, futuristic/science fiction/fantasy, art that is directly and affectingly inspired by music, art that fuses diverse influences, art that hints at both sensuality and spirituality. An absolute "must-have" title for pop/rock music and contemporary art collectors. This copy is Number 17, indicated as such on the Front Limitation Page, and it is very boldly and beautifully signed in black pen by Joni Mitchell, John Mayall, Klaus Voormann, Ronnie Wood, and Commander Cody. It is also very boldly and beautifully signed in black pen on the title page by Debby Chesher. In a lovely gesture, Ronnie Wood wrote a long inscription in black pen on Page 163, and inserted a Polaroid self-portrait of himself and his baby boy. By the time of the book's publication, Cat Stevens had converted to Islam (which does not recognize his art or his music). A Note Insert says that he could not sign the book as a result of his conversion. This edition is now highly collectible. This is the only copy available online and is in fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a beauty. Authentic Joni Mitchell and Ronnie Wood signatures are impossible to find. Here they are, in a Limited Edition format no less. A rare signed copy thus. Lavishly illustrated with color plates. Some of the greatest pop and rock music/artists of our time. A fine collectible copy. . ISBN 096900530X.
