[Manuscript]: A Married Man's Diary of a passionate love for another man in New York City (1979)

[New York City]. (1979). Blank book. Octavo. Quarter cloth and marbled paper over boards. A compelling diary kept by a married man (name withheld but identified in the diary): "at 37 in my married state!" - written at the culminating moment of a 15-month relationship with another man. His account consists of 10 manuscript pages in ink, covering a two-month period (February-March, 1979), with three additional pages of manuscript notes at the back (the remaining pages are blank). Near fine. The first page begins on February 9th, with the writer's [John] philosophical justifications for keeping a diary, inspired also by his current reading of Proust and D. H. Lawrence. In the second entry he begins to address the heart of the matter, giving an account of his friendship of over a year with a man (MR or Marc) that he hopes is on the verge of becoming romantic and sexual. The entries become more and more poignant, as his initial advances are rejected, and as he wrestles with conflicting emotions: "Here I am, feeling contrite, self-conscious again - another abortive pass at Marc - another irritated, pained rejection ... It's clear I want to separate the beautiful thing I felt, and want more of, with him from the other big realities of my life. And I can't trust him ... but still he gives me intense joy, intense pain. And always, too, the physical yearning. He is utterly beautiful ... I'm also willing to wait. It has to be reciprocal." With increasing emotion in this last three entries from March, he speculates at length on his and Marc's competing motivations, his urgent need for "the physical expression" (but also ambivalence about its consummation), and then describes how things turn out badly, culminating in a fight, and a mad "dash out into the night followed by hurled wet laundry into Columbus Avenue. ... God damn Marc for being so fascinating - or me, for being as fascinated by my own feelings for him." Laid-in is a manuscript note to John from Marc, written over a year later ("Mon. 5/19 - 1980") on a carbon receipt, in which he explains his attempts to get in touch. A provocative and moving testimony. .

New York: Richard Marek Publishers. (1979). First. First edition. Slightly cocked with accompanying waviness along the spine, a tiny abrasion on the front paste down and bumped corner, about near fine in about near fine dustwrapper with a touch of wear at the heel of the spine and wrinkling along the bottom front edge. Signed by the DeMille. The true first edition of this scarce title, a thriller co-written with Block, a pilot and DeMille's childhood friend. DeMille's co-authorship was originally unattributed, and the book club edition (lacking a priced jacket as this has) is sometimes mistakenly offered as a first edition. Very likely the most difficult DeMille book to obtain, particularly in this condition and signed. Although not marked in any way, this copy is from the distinguished modern first edition collection of Bruce Kahn. .

        The book of the hackle.

. Edinburgh, Scottish Academy Press, 1979. 8vo. xi, 140 pp., coloured frontispiece, six peculiar plates with original hackles including 29 different types. Original red morocco in original slipcase by A. Lumsden. Gilt edges.* On artificial insects which are largely based on Ephemeroptera in morphology and "behaviour". One of 85 numbered copies, of which this is no. 55, in a fine fresh copy. "My father's interest in dry-fly fishing for trout developed within him an interest in breeding poultry to provide the feathers which have the essential qualities necessary to keep the artificial fly floating on the surface of the water. In the last fifteen years or so of his life, during which he bred poultry exclusively for this purpose, he was forced to ask fundamental questions not only about how different characteristics and colours could be produced through selective breeding but more fundamentally, what exactly is a "good" hackle and what purpose is the hackle on a dry-fly intended to fulfil" (from the introduction). This edition should not be confused with the one without real hackles. A very good copy..

        12 acqueforti. Dickens-Christmas

Milano: Edizioni di Vanni Scheiwiller, 1979. Prima ed. di 80 es. numerati e firmati dall'A.. Quartini e incisioni sciolte in custodia rigida (loose as issued in original portfolio). Ottimo (Fine). 4to (cm 40x28). Dedica e firma autografe dell'Autore (Inscribed and signed by the Author). Es. 58/80

        Flash Gordon [Original Art]

1979 - Original art by Carlos Garzon for a double-page splash of a Flash Gordon comic book (unsigned, undated). On Strathmore heavy illustration paper, overall dimensions 19" x 14 1/2", image occupying most of that. Lightly layout-taped at corners to backing cardboard. A few layout marks and notations, else Fine. A two-page sequence scene showing Flash defeating a variety of rough looking gladiator-type alien foes in a desolate part of the planet Mongo, in a contest - The Tournament of Death - he was forced into by Ming. Carlos Garzon's name can be found all over DC, Dark Horse and Marvel comics, notably in Flash Gordon, Star Wars, Star Trek and Spiderman offerings. This double-page splash was drawn in 1979 as part of a Flash Gordon story that was never published. It would have been in one of the final issues of the series that began in 1966 with the now legendary "re-creation" of Alex Raymond's space hero by Al Williamson with King Comics Flash Gordon #1. Garzon had already been heavily influenced by Williamson. Scarce, particularly as an action double-panel from an unpublished issue. Art [Attributes: Soft Cover]

New York: The Pierpont Morgan Library; London: Oxford University Press, 1979. n. Hardcover. With the Feeling of Excavated Central Panels. 318 x 241 mm (12 1/2 x 9 1/2"). xxvii, [i], 338 pp. IMAGINATIVE DARK GREEN MOROCCO, GILT, CARVED, AND INLAID, by Fritz Eberhardt (stamp-signed on rear turn-in), cover with large panel in an abstract sculpted design tooled with leafy gilt branches bearing inlaid red morocco berries; double raised bands flanked by gilt rules and with a thin strip of inlaid red morocco between each pair, leather joints, turquoise edges decorated with abstract gilt squiggles. In the original suede-lined gray clamshell box with black morocco back. With 104 full-page black and white photographic plates, seven full-page color photographic plates, and additional text illustrations. As new. Covering one of the most useful surveys of the history of binding, this is a distinctive example of the work of Fritz Eberhardt, the acclaimed bookbinder, letterer, and calligrapher who is considered one of the modern masters of the book arts. Born in present-day Poland, Eberhardt (1919-97) studied bookbinding from 1935-38 with Ignatz Wiemeler at the Leipzig Akademie für graphische Künste und Buchgewerbe, and later, when he developed an interest in lettering, with Rudo Spemann. After an interruption because of financial constraints and World War II, he renewed his studies from 1948-49 at the Werkkunstschule, Offenbach, where his teachers included Karlgeorg Hoefer and the great typeface designer, Hermann Zapf. In 1950 he taught bookbinding at Bookholzberg, and in 1951 worked as a binder and gilder in a bindery at Linköping, Sweden. In 1954 he emigrated with his wife--also a bookbinder--to Philadelphia, and from 1956 until his death, the two worked in a bindery they established at Harleysville, Pennsylvania. His binding designs are considered among the finest produced in the 20th century. Of particular note with the present volume is the sculpted central panel on each cover, giving the effect that the binding has been unearthed at an archaeological site and the gilt work revealed after brushing away excess soil. This is a very appropriate design feature for the binding of a copy of this catalogue, which provides the broadest possible survey of bookbinding history, beginning with the fifth century.

In 1914 the Mother traveled to Pondicherry to meet Sri Aurobindo, whom she at once recognised as the one who for many years had inwardly guided her spiritual development. After a stay of eleven months she was obliged to return to France at the outbreak of th First World War. A year later she went to Japan for a period of four years. In April 1920 the Mother rejoined Sri Aurobindo in Pondicherry. When the Sri Aurobindo Ashram was formed in November 1926, Sri Aurobindo entrusted its full material and spiritual charge to the Mother. Under her guidance, which continued for nearly fifty years, the Ashram grew into a large, many-faceted spiritual community. In 1952 she established Sri Aurobindo International Centre of Education, and in 1968 an international township, Auroville. She died in 1973' (Sri Aurobindo Ashram, website).

ISBN 3455045677 Sprache: de Gewicht in Gramm: 1550

Winston S. Churchill, The Official Biography, Companion Volume V, Part 1, The Exchequer Years 1922 - 1929

William Heinemann Ltd., London 1979 - The Official Biography of Winston Churchill, initiated by Randolph Churchill but completed by Martin Gilbert, is an epic piece of scholarship about a singularly epic life, comprising eight mammoth main text volumes and - so far - seventeen accompanying document or "Companion" volumes. The eight main text volumes were published between 1966 and 1988. Publication of the Companion volumes continues today. The Companion volumes for Volume V of the Official Biography are the most keenly sought and most difficult to acquire of all Official Biography volumes. There was only a single printing in England and the Volume V Companions were published in smaller quantities than other Companion volumes - meaning that many Official Biography sets will forever do without. Here is a superior, collector-worthy copy of the first of three Volume V Companions, the British first edition, only printing. This copy is near-fine plus in a fine dust jacket. The red cloth binding is clean, tight, and square with sharp corners, bright spine gilt, and virtually no wear. The contents are crisp, clean, and bright. No spotting or previous ownership marks. The red-stained top edge retains strong, unfaded color. The only trivial flaw noted is a hint of soiling at the tips of the bottom edge of the text block where the massive weight of the text has caused the edges to touch the shelf. The dust jacket is clean and bright and retains the original price on the front flap. There are no losses or tears. The dust jacket retains bright, unfaded spine print. The dust jacket is protected in a removable archival mylar cover. Please note that this large, heavy book may require additional postage. Bibliographic reference: Zoller A302e1.
