Southern CA: WSO, 1978. Rare! NA historical rarity when comparing to literature whether it is 1956 - 1976 White Books - NA 1st edition Basic Texts - 1st edition IP's this 1978 Southern California Meeting Directory is far more rare than all the literature listed above. This is original February 1978 meeting directory where NA began in Southern CA. 1978 is important year in NA history as NA meetings were just beginning in other states and cities throughout North America & other countries & growing fast. There were 74 NA meetings alone in this directory from Monday - Sunday 1978. That is a large NA community in CA in 78. NA began to grow in membership as a result of efforts of recovering addicts reaching out in meetings and service committees all designed to carry the message of recovery to the still suffering addict. Interesting Note: *Look at 3rd pic* - Index code of which meetings were open or closed. "Closed meeting are for addicts and alcoholics". This was the language used in NA before 1985 - I know this as I was a member and there was not a clarity statement back then. In NA meetings I attended we all identified ourselves in manner other than today. None of us in WI identified ourselves as addicts only. This began to change after 1985 when WSC in CA announced to all ASR & RSR'S that attended this conference to bring back to our groups to identify ourselves as addict only to define our identity to the 1st step. This slowly began to take hold in our NA groups although this didn't happen overnight. This meeting directory came from an old NA collection that had original 195 … [Click Below for Full Description]

Anne McCaffrey
1978. Condition: Very Good. Offered is a really nice set of the first 21 books of Anne McCaffrey's Pern series. 19 are first editions, 2 are Book Club editions. Seven of the 1st editions are signed by the author and 2 of these are also signed by the cover artist Michael Whelan who is a well respected sci-fi and fantasy artist. I will describe each book as well as I can. The last few pics I took are not on the listing as I had reached the limit. 1. Dragonflight: Stated first printing October 1978 by DelRey Publishing. No writing, no marks, not price clipped. There is some foxing and mild to moderate soiling to the outside page edges. Some wear and rubbing to the edges of the boards. The jacket would be very good but for a tear along the front bottom edge of the spine. Overall, in very good condition for a 41 year old book. 2. Dragonquest: Stated first Ballentine Books hardcover edition Feb. 1979. In great condition. No marks, writing, not price clipped. Mild tanning from age to DJ flaps. Edges of boards in good condition. Near mint DJ under clear cover. Includes a beautiful bookplate that has a color pic of a dragon at the top and a small black/white pic of Ms. McCaffrey at the bottom. It states "This is an authentic bookplate personally signed for you by Anne McCaffrey", and of course, has her signature in ink. I received a few of these several years ago after some correspondence with her daughter Gigi who mailed them to me from Ireland. A collectable in it's own right. 3. Wanniski, Jude
New York: Basic Books, 1978. Early printing of Wanniski's classic book. Octavo, original cloth. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "Jan. 29, 1979 To K.K. Bigelow Best Wishes to A Comrade in Arms and Ideas. Jude Wanniski." Near fine in a near fine dust jacket. Jacket design by Vincent Torre. Jude Wanniski's masterpiece defined the policies at the heart of the Reagan economic boom that continues today and promises a coming century of global peace and prosperity. Writing with a simplicity and liveliness uncommon to his subject, Wanniski offers a fresh general theory of the world's political evolution that explains how and why economies fail and succeed, now and as far as we can imagine. Commentator Robert D. Novak said, in the introduction to the 20th anniversary edition, that it was one of two books that "shaped [Novak's] mature philosophy of politics and government." The Way the World Works was named one of the 100 most influential books of the 20th century by National Review magazine.

King, Stephen
Garden City, NY: Doubleday & Company, 1978. First edition of the author's fourth novel. Thick octavo, original half cloth. Boldly signed by Stephen King on the title page. Fine (without the usual sag associated with this bulky volume) in a fine dust jacket with a touch of shelfwear. Jacket illustration by John Cayea. "I love to burn things up," King says. "It's the werewolf in me, I guess.... The Stand was particularly fulfilling, because there I got a chance to scrub the whole human race, and man, it was fun! ... Much of the compulsive, driven feeling I had while I worked on The Stand came from the vicarious thrill of imagining an entire entrenched social order destroyed in one stroke." "There is much to admire in The Stand: the vivid thumbnail sketches with which King populates a whole landscape with dozens of believable characters; the deep sense of nostalgia for things left behind; the way it subverts our sense of reality by showing us a world we find familiar, then flipping it over to reveal the darkness underneath. Anyone who wants to know, or claims to know, the heart of the American experience needs to read this book" (Fiona Webster). It was the basis for the 1994 American television miniseries. King also wrote the teleplay and had a minor role in the series. It was directed by Mick Garris and stars Gary Sinise, Miguel Ferrer, Rob Lowe, Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee, Jamey Sheridan, Laura San Giacomo, Molly Ringwald, Corin Nemec, Adam Storke, Ray Walston, and Matt Frewer.

IRVING SELIKOFF MESOTHELIOMA ASBESTOSIS LUNG DISEASE 1978
1978. Condition: Very Good. ASBESTOS & DISEASE by IRVING SELIKOFF MESOTHELIOMA ASBESTOSIS LUNG DISEASE 1978 Description: Asbestos and Disease (1978) Out of print, hardcover book with over 500 pages. First Edition of a classic and exceedingly important work by the medical researcher who first established the link between inhalation of asbestos particles and lung related diseases. This work has helped lead to the regulation of asbestos today. From the Foreword: "The essence of the relationship of man to his environment is the ratio of benefit to risk. Asbestos, a naturally occurring fibrous material, is a startling example of a material at once uniquely useful, because of its physical and chemical properties, and at the same time potentially hazardous to man. Evidence linking inhalation of asbestos fiber to the development of a group of diseases is generating ever-growing concern. The demonstrated risks involve the worker expose in manufacture and use of asbestos, residents of neighborhoods of asbestos manufacturing plants, and the members of households of the asbestos worker. The benefits of asbestos, however, merit an assessment of the nature of the hazard, the extent of the hazard, and the possibilities for control of the hazard. Asbestos exposure can result in both inflammatory and neoplastic disease: asbestosis, lung cancer, and mesothelioma. Epidemiologic studies show a minimal but consistent increased risk to cancer fo the gastrointestinal tract in workers with asbestosis. The identification of neoplastic disease as a consequence of asbestos fiber inhalation resulted i … [Click Below for Full Description]

Tim O'Brien
New York: Delacorte / Seymour Lawrence, 1978. The covers are sunned, and the spine is somewhat askew, still about a Like New copy. To be published by Delacorte / Seymour Lawrence, this is NOT the published edition, but the paperback bound galleys (here called Uncorrected Proof) in plain wrappers, preceding the trade edition. In a protective mylar wrapper. 344 pp. Signed "Peace, Tim O'Brien." The covers are sunned, and the spine is somewhat askew, still about a Like New copy. Proofs/advance reader copies are considered the 'true' first edition by many collectors. Since they are produced in relatively small numbers, they are highly desirable. Usually even scarcer, bound galleys, when present, precede proofs and advance reader copies. In a blend of reality and fantasy, this novel tells the story of a young soldier who one day lays down his rifle and sets off on a quixotic journey from the jungles of Indochina to the streets of Paris. In its memorable evocation of men both fleeing from and meeting the demands of battle, Going After Cacciato stands as much more than just a great war novel. Ultimately it's about the forces of fear and heroism that do battle in the hearts of us all. A National Book Award-winning novel and a key title in the literature of the Vietnam War. By the author of If I Die in a Combat Zone, The Things They Carried, and In the Lake of the Woods. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

The often unusual forms of the porcelain, their decorative styles and traditions, the endlessly varying subjects that they portray - and above all the continuous interchange in such themes between the Chinese manufacturers and decorators and their distant clients in the West, by means of the historic trading companies - all these are studied and interpreted more fully, and tabulated more practically for reference than ever before. The work also examines o … [Click Below for Full Description]

Kindleberger, Charles P
Basic Books, New York, 1978. First edition of the author's classic work. Octavo, original cloth. Fine in a very good dust jacket. Inscribed by the author. First editions are rare, especially signed. Selected as one of the best investment books of all time by the Financial Times, Manias, Panics and Crashes puts the turbulence of the financial world in perspective. "Underneath the hilarious anecdotes, the elegant epigrams, and the graceful turns of phrase, Kindleberger is deadly serious. The manner in which humans beings earn their livings is no laughing matter to him, especially when they attempt to do so at the expense of one another. As he so effectively demonstrates, manias, panics, and crashes are the consequence of an economic environment that cultivates cupidity, chicanery, and rapaciousness rather than a devout belief in the Golden Rule" (Peter L. Bernstein). [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]
