Turnhout, Brepols, 1978 Hardback, 192 p., 11 pag. illustratie, 21 x 28. ISBN 05870020100. Le present ouvrage qui est essentiellement consacre a la description d'une nouvelle industrie lithique, l'Elkabien, dont l'outillage est lamellaire est quasi exclusivement microlithique. Morinaga Jun
An amazing book of photographs of river waters, taken by the photographer who was assistant to W. Eugene Smith in Japan in 1961 & 1962. These images were taken by Morinaga from 1960 to 1963. He established his own studio in 1969. In his introduction, Smith writes in part: "The photographs in this book contain no actual human beings. Yet, to me, these photographs hauntingly seethe with undercurrents of the damnation factors of our times... To appreciate them the viewer must break any narrowness of traditional recognitions...It is an experience worth the effort...There are few photographs that profoundly move me, that change my life. Jun Morinaga's photographs did both.... Many months after Jun was working with me, he sat on the floor and we tried to converse. He spoke that "You are the master, what can I do to improve my photographs?" And I replied with all the sincerity of my being -- "In what you do you are the master -- I only wish I could photograph as well." Quoted in "Japanese Photobooks of the 1960s and 70s", p. 218-219. -- Testi: Smith W.Eugene, Morinaga Jun et al. F.to: 28x30,5; 89 BN; rileg. rigida con cofanetto. Editore: Yugensha, Tokyo, 1978.

Stephen King
1978. For the highest bidder goes the spoils of history. Stephen King, perhaps our time's greatest storyteller, published a work about an unnamed gunslinger in the October 1978 issue of the Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction. This specific example is like no other. This example has been handled by King himself under oath while being deposed in a pending copyright infringement case: DuBay v. King. The abstract of the deposition is provided as provenance. The transcript is part of the Federal Record. This action is for a copyright infringement action concerning King's magnum opus, The Dark Tower. Q The very last paragraph, it says, "Thus ends what was written in the first book of Roland and his quest for the tower, which stands at the root of time" is the paragraph. And I'll hand it to you. And my question is: That paragraph, was that part of the original work that you wrote on the green paper?A No. Q And at what point in time did you add that paragraph? A At the end of -- is this the fifth? Yes, this is the fifth one. I wanted readers to understand that there were more stories to come. MR. DUBAY: Correction. That's the first one. MR.COOK: Yeah. MR. COX: Take a look at it. I think -I think it may be the first. I think -- I think it's the first one, though. THE WITNESS: Is it the first one? Okay. Yeah. So I just added that so that people would know that the story wasn't complete. BY MR. COOK: Q Okay. So when you -- what I'm getting to is when you typed it on the green paper, it did not contain that paragraph? A Not to my knowledge.No. I'll say no. -The condition is used a … [Click Below for Full Description]

IRVING, John
Dutton, (1978). Soft Cover. Very Good. Item #023819 The advance reading copy of his fourth novel and breakthrough book, which went into numerous printings, became a multi-million copy bestseller and a National Book Award winner in its paperback release. The first printing of Garp was reported at 35,000 copies; none of Irving's previous books had sold even 5,000 copies, with one of them having had sales under 2000. Irving switched publishers for this book, and his new publisher decided to promote the novel heavily. After issuing two sets of proofs in small numbers for early readers and reviewers, Dutton printed this advance reading copy for wide distribution to the book trade. It worked in bringing attention to Irving's novel, which became a bestseller; since then, Irving's books have had six-figure first printings and his reputation as a major American novelist is secure. The publisher's risk, in producing such a large first printing, and their marketing efforts -- including creating this advance copy -- played no small part in this transformation. This copy is signed by the author. Spine cocked and creased, with staining to covers; about very good in wrappers. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

1978. Condition: Very Good. Extremely RARE Signed First Edition by Rem Koolhaas! Rem Koolhaas's celebration and analysis of New York depicts the city as a metaphor for the incredible variety of human behavior. At the end of the nineteenth century, population, information, and technology explosions made Manhattan a laboratory for the invention and testing of a metropolitan lifestyle -- "the culture of congestion" -- and its architecture. "Manhattan," he writes, "is the 20th century's Rosetta Stone . . . occupied by architectural mutations (Central Park, the Skyscraper), utopian fragments (Rockefeller Center, the U.N. Building), and irrational phenomena (Radio City Music Hall)." Koolhaas interprets and reinterprets the dynamic relationship between architecture and culture in a number of telling episodes of New York's history, including the imposition of the Manhattan grid, the creation of Coney Island, and the development of the skyscraper. Delirious New York is also packed with intriguing and fun facts and illustrated with witty watercolors and quirky archival drawings, photographs, postcards, and maps. The spirit of this visionary investigation of Manhattan equals the energy of the city itself. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]

Goble, Paul
Bradbury Press, Scarsdale NY, 1978. First printing of this Caldecott Medal winner, difficult to find in collectible condition. This copy is FINE in a Near Fine jacket. Book is clean and bright, tight and square, no previous owner name or marks. No "handling" noted either; pages are crisp and fresh. Jacket also very nice; just one tiny tear to bottom front panel, and some light toning to the jacket--which, being mostly white, shows everything. But this is very nice. Medal sticker is present. Original price, correct for first, is intact on jacket flap. Please see photos. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]

Chilton, Alex
Lust / Unlust, 1978. Archive of artwork, photography, overlays, and layout design for the vinyl 45 RPM single release of Alex Chilton's "Bangkok" b/w "Can't Seem to Make You Mine." Includes the original silver gelatin photograph used for the cover artwork, with a credit for the photography studio at 30 St. Marks Place in New York City rubber-stamped in red on the verso. Included is a copy of the resulting 7-inch record in its picture sleeve as issued. Recorded in 1977, and released in 1978 on Charles Ball's Lust/Unlust label, with the "Fun" label (a design gleefully appropriating Sam Phillips' "Sun" Records logo) applied as a joke. A classic single from the New York underground scene, recorded during Chilton's New York residency of the late 1970s, combining his experimental instincts with a rockabilly/no wave aesthetic. The A-side, "Bangkok," stands as one of Chilton's most irresistable and infectious rock songs, making famous reference to Johnny Thunders' "Chinese Rocks." The B-side, a warbly, warped deconstruction of a 1965 recording by the American psychedelic pop band The Seeds, is more along the lines of Chilton's 1977 EP, "The Singer Not the Song," and the magnum opus LP that would follow, "Like Flies on Sherbert." Layout materials Very Good to Near Fine. 7-inch record Near Fine in a Very Good example of the original picture sleeve.

Stephen King (1978) 'Night Shift', US first edition, first printing, published by Doubleday. Signed and inscribed by King on the ffep: "For Ron - Best [signature] 6/9/80". All first issue points present: 'First edition' on the copyright page as well as the correct gutter code S52 on page 336. Dust jacket priced at $8.95. Condition: Fine and practically mint. 1978. 47 issues in 34 fascicules (16 to 64 pp. each), along with the supplemental Almanach der Freunde der Randlage (released between issues 9 and 10), comprising a complete set of the underground visual art, literature and poetry series co-published by Valentin Rothmaler and Reiwert Q. Tode through issue 24 and continued by Tode under the new title (Kreuzberger Randlage) through the end of its run, featuring original works by East and West German artists and writers including Katje Lange-Müller, Anastas E. Guckel, Reinhild Gerum, W.C. Warmbold, G.B. Becker, Jupp Huerkamp, Georg Laschen, Lothar Nowack, Adolf Endler, Christoph Perels, Jutta Hilscher, Ursula Oberbeckmann, Michael Ruetz, Hans Thom, Joel Agee, Jan Gielkins, Peter Will, Volker Meier, Reiner M. Illus. wrpps, nos. 1 through 24 with brightly-colored alulitho, largely abstract prints by Rothmaler. Berlin (Verlag amBEATion Riewert Q. Tode) 1978-2018. Issues printed in editions of 300-500, several copies signed by the authors. According to an advertisement for the serial appearing in the almanac, the journal was established to deliver "literary, existential, and artistic expressions" from both East and West Germany and self-consciously sought a position at the periphery of mainstream artistic and literary conversations. In additional to original works by contemporary producers, Randlage included reprints of works by figures incl … [Click Below for Full Description]

King, Stephen
Doubleday & Company, Garden City, NY, 1978. First edition of the author's fourth novel. Thick octavo, original half cloth. Boldly signed by Stephen King on the title page. Fine (without the usual sag associated with this bulky volume) in an excellent dust jacket with light rubbing. Jacket illustration by John Cayea. "I love to burn things up," King says. "It's the werewolf in me, I guess. The Stand was particularly fulfilling, because there I got a chance to scrub the whole human race, and man, it was fun! . Much of the compulsive, driven feeling I had while I worked on The Stand came from the vicarious thrill of imagining an entire entrenched social order destroyed in one stroke." "There is much to admire in The Stand: the vivid thumbnail sketches with which King populates a whole landscape with dozens of believable characters; the deep sense of nostalgia for things left behind; the way it subverts our sense of reality by showing us a world we find familiar, then flipping it over to reveal the darkness underneath. Anyone who wants to know, or claims to know, the heart of the American experience needs to read this book" (Fiona Webster). It was the basis for the 1994 American television miniseries. King also wrote the teleplay and had a minor role in the series. It was directed by Mick Garris and stars Gary Sinise, Miguel Ferrer, Rob Lowe, Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee, Jamey Sheridan, Laura San Giacomo, Molly Ringwald, Corin Nemec, Adam Storke, Ray Walston, and Matt Frewer. Masahisa Fukase
Asahi Sonorama. From Sonorama's "Shashin Sensho" series, Fukase's 1978 work, Yohko, with its iconic cover of Yohko herself, and a forward by the late curator Shoji Yamagishi (in English and Japanese). Features a wide swath of Fukase's works; a classic and important work by Fukase in every sense. As to condition, the dust jacket is particularly nice, with only minor tanning to the spine. The book has a small Japanese bookseller's seal on the inner blank page, and another appears to have been removed from the last page; otherwise minimal wear. Please check the images. A particularly nice copy of an increasingly difficult to find work. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]
