Raskin, Ellen
E.P. Dutton & Company, Inc, New York, 1978. First edition of Raskins's Newbery Award winning novel. Octavo, original cloth. Association copy, lengthily inscribed by the author on the half-title page with a drawing of a self-caricature, "O, glory, glory, glory be, will wonders never case! For Sue Glazer - my best rooter and good, good friend. Thank you, thank you, love and kisses, Ellen Raskin." Raskin has added a full-page caricature of herself donning a gown, tiara and "Miss Newbery" sash holding a large scepter with the gold Newbery seal as the globe. She has also added a footnote at the bottom of the page which reads, "Note: This book is one of the first off the press - the dedication may be belated, but it is a good one. E.R." The recipient, Dr. Susan Mandel Glazer was the author's closest friend and an internationally recognized literary advocate and taught at Rider University for an impressive 45 years. Scarcely seen inscribed, let alone with a self-caricature and such an intimate association. In Raskin's Newbery Award-winning mystery The Westing Game, wealthy industrialist Sam Westing dies and, in his will, calls for his sixteen heirs to meet at his mansion where he sets out a game in which they are paired out with a set of clues and $10,000 with which they are challenged to determine who killed Westing and why. The book went on to win the Newbery Medal, the Boston Globe/Horn Book Award and was an ALA Notable Book. It was ranked number nine among all-time children's novels in a survey published by School Library Journal in 2012. It has been adapted as the 1997 featur … [Click Below for Full Description]

Ray Sherwin
England: Near mint condition. Book of Results 1978 First Edition 1/100 Ray Sherwin IOT Chaos Sigil Magick Morton Press UBER RARE! The Book of Results by Ray Sherwin (Self-)Published by Morton Press, England, 1978 (n.d.) First Edition Softcover Near mint condition Exceedingly rare First Edition copy of The Book of Results, by Ray Sherwin, self-published in 1978, in a limited edition of 100 copies. Some copies were numbered, some were not. This is an un-numbered copy. In 1978, Ray Sherwin co-founded the Illuminates of Thanateros with Pete Carroll, later publishing Carroll's book, Liber Null. Also during 1978, Sherwin wrote and published The Book of Results. These two books, Liber Null and The Book of Results, were the first books written on the topic of chaos magic. Early editions of either book are very hard to come by, and it is almost impossible to find the first editions, which were self-published, and tend to be fragile. The first edition is also much more concise, than some of the later editions, and has illustrations that do not appear in the later editions. "The Book of Results was first released (by Ray Sherwin's own publishing venture The Morton Press) in 1978, and it has the dual distinction of not only being the first book to explain and refine the now infamous sigil magic method of Austin Osman Spare, but also to be one of the earliest texts of the nascent Chaos Magic movement. I bought my first copy of Results in 1979, and was immediately impressed by its lucidity and down-to-earth practicality, and soon after reading through it, went off and began my first expe … [Click Below for Full Description]

BINDINGS - JAMES BROCKMAN). WEBB, JOHN, ET. AL
Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1978. In a meeting of science and art, this important study of British mineral deposits is given the royal treatment with a binding of luxurious vellum and memorable gilt geometric design done by a modern master. The creamy white vellum is the perfect backdrop for the complex design here, allowing the gold and colors to pop off their canvas in a dance of technical precision and pleasing aesthetics. This visual nod to electrical circuits, light waves, and prisms on the covers and doublures seems to reference the "spectrographic" technique that was heavily used in the present study, in which light was passed through sediment samples and then analyzed for the presence of 21 different elements according to their unique signatures. Advancements in computer programming allowed scientists to process an unprecedented number of samples (nearly 50,000 taken over the course of a year) more quickly than ever before, and, crucially, on a large scale. The resulting array of maps shows the dispersion of various mineral deposits nationwide and, according to the British Geological Survey, "remains the only completed high density regional geochemical stream sediment survey of England." A past president of Designer Bookbinders and the Society of Bookbinders, Brockman (b. 1946) apprenticed as a finisher at Blackwell's, studied with Ivor Robinson, and served as assistant to Sydney Cockerell at Cambridge from 1968-73. Three years later, he opened his own bindery in Oxford, which continues to produce notable work. The present binding was commissioned by Christopher Henry … [Click Below for Full Description]

Shepard, Sam and Patti Smith
[New York: The 57 Club, 1978]. Original illustrated poster, offset printed in black and red on white stock, measuring 21.5cm x 35.5cm (8.5" x 14"). Mild toning and handling to extremities, with a short tear and a tiny bruise near upper edge; unbacked; Near Fine. Attractive poster for a set of performances of Cowboy Mouth, from October 19-21, 1978, at The 57 Club, a New Wave nightclub in the East Village. The play was co-written in a week in 1971 by Sam Shepard and Patti Smith, while they lived together in the Chelsea Hotel. The play had just a handful of performances in 1971; it was revived in 1978, well after Smith was famous, by Stanley Strychacki, who ran The 57 Club. "Well, we put on "Cowboy Mouth" by Sam Shepard, who was just becoming established at the time. They brought new colors to the play and stirred up a lot of interest, packing the club for may nights in the process. This was a rock'n'roll play, the fruit of a joint collaboration with Patti Smith. Written in 1971, it was an early attempt at combining rock'n'roll with theater, forging the way for megaproductions like "Tommy" and "Jesus Christ, Superstar." The story is actually a conversation between two lovers who argued about music, life and love, and how to find solutions and new roads in rock'n'roll" (Strychacki, Stanley. Life as Art: The Club 57 Story, p.21). Not found in OCLC.

1978. Condition: Very Good. Extremely RARE Signed First Edition by Rem Koolhaas! Rem Koolhaas's celebration and analysis of New York depicts the city as a metaphor for the incredible variety of human behavior. At the end of the nineteenth century, population, information, and technology explosions made Manhattan a laboratory for the invention and testing of a metropolitan lifestyle -- "the culture of congestion" -- and its architecture. "Manhattan," he writes, "is the 20th century's Rosetta Stone . . . occupied by architectural mutations (Central Park, the Skyscraper), utopian fragments (Rockefeller Center, the U.N. Building), and irrational phenomena (Radio City Music Hall)." Koolhaas interprets and reinterprets the dynamic relationship between architecture and culture in a number of telling episodes of New York's history, including the imposition of the Manhattan grid, the creation of Coney Island, and the development of the skyscraper. Delirious New York is also packed with intriguing and fun facts and illustrated with witty watercolors and quirky archival drawings, photographs, postcards, and maps. The spirit of this visionary investigation of Manhattan equals the energy of the city itself. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]
