        The Westing Game

New York: E.P Dutton [1978], 1978. First printing. Hardcover. Fine/very near Fine. 185 pp. Price of $7.95 on front flap of jacket. Inscribed and with an illustration by the author on the free front endpaper. Winner of the Newbery Medal, an inventive and entertaining mystery. Inscribed to the author's dear friend Susan Glazer, a former professor of Rider University in New Jersey. Dr. Glazer was an important advocate for children's literacy, and worked in her community and around the world to promote it. The inscription includes a self-caricature of the author dressed as a pageant winner with a sash that says "Miss Newbery" and a Newbery sticker as the head of the figure's wand. The entire page wonderfully demonstrates Raskin's graphic design skill. In the postscript note of the inscription the author remarks that the book is one of the first off the press (presumably received by her directly from the publisher prior to the official publication date). A beautiful and unique association copy of this classic children's mystery, scarce signed and in collectible condition. A Fine book in a very near Fine jacket with some mild age toning to the tops of the panels.

        Methuen Handbook of Colour

Methuen Publishing Ltd 1978 - An overall Near Mint edition of this extremely rare and highly sought after text. This is the third printing (1989) of the third editon (1978). This was the last printing of this book which is unlikely to ever be reissued as the film used to print it has been lost. There is very little preventing me from listing this as Mint but I will describe its few flaws in detail. There is a very small amount of handling wear present on the fore page edge. The top end of the spine is very slightly bumped. The dustjacket is price-clipped and there is some negligible light general wear. Otherwise, this edition is as fresh as the day it came off the press. All proceeds from the sale of this book go directly to Oxfam. From the publisher's description: "The Third Edition of this authoritative pocket colour-book covers the essentials of colour practice and includes an international dictionary of colours with British Standard equivalents. A universal ready-reference for all whose jobs or recreations involve colour, it now includes names of colours used by British paint manufacturers and colours traditionally associated with the printing ink industry, thus shedding light on the whole field of colour in art and science. The colour book is divided into two parts, the Handbook proper and a Colour Dictionary. The Handbook explains the basic facts upon which all systems of colour identification are based, and describes some important visual effects that apply to colour usage generally. The Dictionary consists of plates of 1,266 colour samples accompanied by descriptive glossaries of colour names with an easy cross-reference system. The Colour Dictionary is so contrived that a colour sample of one's own can be compared with the charted samples, and an appropriate name selected for it from the colour diagrams. On the other hand, the appearance of a named colour can be discovered by looking up the colour-name in the alphabetical list and following the reference symbol to the appropriate place on the colour plates. Lists of colour names used by British paint manufacturers and those used by the printing ink industry are included, set out in such a way that they can be readily compared with the colours reproduced in the Dictionary."         Two Poems [cover title]

Montreal: The Word, 1978. First edition. Hint of toning from a letter; slight thumb-dent, fine in original printed envelope, used and a bit marked.. 8vo, single bifolium of thick "Salt & Pepper" paper made by Twinrocker, Brookston, Indiana, printed on all sides. One of 140 numbered, signed copies of the poet's second book, printing the poems "Sundown at Fletcher's Field" and "Along These Rows." Laid in is a nice typed letter signed by Kleinzahler to Christopher Middleton, one of the poet's literary heroes, in which he describes his forthcoming book (A Calendar of Airs) and asks Middleton for a blurb. Middleton did indeed provide a blurb for the cover of the book when it was published by Coach House Press in 1978. Here, Kleinzahler has also inscribed the envelope: "One year later, but more poems -- August." Far less common than the Sausage Master of Minsk, which appeared the year before.

Max The Mouse who Made the Met

This is an early home-made book by an eighteen year old (or 17) Tom Yakutis, who went on to a highly successful career as an animator. His later credits include Popeye (1978 - 1981), Challenge of the SuperFriends, and many stints as director, designer, or artist on episodes of such beloved cartoons as the Jetsens, the Flintstones, etc. He began his career at Disney and worked at many of the major animation studios subsequently, including Hanna and Barbera, Warner Brothers, etc. Already in this illustrated manuscript we can see the polish of his renderings, with the mice and human characters endowed with real expressiveness. The short text is not really commensurate with the quality of the illustrations, and from the many misspellings we might wonder whether Mr. Yakutis was dyslexic. The story flows crudely, but thankfully, the drawings delight and more than compensate. The setting of this mouse tale at the Met is also interesting. There is an element of humor in the tiny creature living in so grand a place, and then upending it. At the time the Met loomed larger in the American landscape as a temple of high culture, and it was a time when top singers there had a presence in popular culture as well, with singers such as Rise Stevens, Laurence Tibbett, Lily Pons, Jamila Novotna, etc. enjoying significant movie careers in popular movies.

From the 1950s and 1960s onward, Cohen's mournful, thought-provoking lyrics and poems have formed the backdrop to the musings of generations. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

[Attributes: Hard Cover]

        39' x 37' x 16' (approx). AND / OR [Gallery]. June 22 to July 9, 1978

[Seattle]: [And/or Gallery], 1978. SIGNED limited edition. No. 36 of 50 (boxed copies?), out of 400 total exhibit catalogues. Stapled brown craft-paper wrappers printed in black, with partially printed/ partially handwritten limitation info to lower corner. In painted cardboard box. Fine condition in Near Fine box (minor wear).. 22 unnumbered pages, including inside wrappers. B/w photographic images and diagrams. Catalogue: 8" x 9-3/4". Box: 9-5/8" x 12" Exhibition catalogue signed by Savinar to the front wrapper, accompanied by two sealed, clear plastic bags containing sawdust and wood chips, respectively. Each bag has been mixed with printed paper scraps, apparently clipped from newspapers or magazines and with a construction theme."39' x 37' x 16' (approx)" was a fairly early exhibit in Savinar's now 40+ career as a Portland-based artist. The show offered a mixed media and wood sculptural interpretation of construction work and its intersections with sex, gender, and country music. The bags of construction detritus we speculate may have been byproducts of the art's creation and/or exhibition setup.Scarce. We find no record of this boxed limitation issue, and only four institutional holdings for just the catalogue alone: MOMA, SFMOMA, Portland Art Museum, and San Francisco Center for the Book.
