        The Stand

Doubleday, New York 1978 - 1st edition/1st printing. Stated First Edition, with the proper T39 code at the lower gutter of the last text page. SIGNED by the author on the front end page: 'For Dan, Best, Stephen King 8/22/80'. Fine book: unread and 'very' tight, straight, clean, unworn binding edges and corners, the gilt on the spine is bright and sharp, and the spine itself has none of the concavity or creasing you normally find with this very thick book when it has been read. The page edges are clean, binding corners sharp. The only thing I can find wrong with it at all is that the cloth at the upper spine end has a bit of flexibility to it but isn't limp or crushed. The Fine dustjacket has had 'no' restoration; it is price intact, crisp, clean and unfaded with no chips or tears; it does have an almost unnoticeable very thin vertical fold line to the front flap. This book is most of King fans' favorite, and rightly so. It is a superbly written book about an after-the-apocalypse world when a plague escapes a government lab and kills most of the population, and of the fight between good and evil among the survivors in the U.S. Filmed as a multi-part mini-series for TV. Reissued in 1990 containing the few hundred pages that the publisher made King shorten the book by in 1978. Collector's copy.; 8-7/16" x 5-3/4"; 823 pages; Signed by Author [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        The Secret Public

New Hormones (ORG2) January 1978, Manchester - Folio. Unpaginated (12pp). Printed wraps as issued. Numerous Black & White collages. 1000 copies published, though most were pinned on walls or destroyed. In superb condition with only a little wear to corners and covers. No pin holes or writing. More images available on request. Ultra scarce. Linder Sterling and Jon Savage's 'The Secret Public' could be one of the most important pieces of publishing from the punk/new wave period. Published as New Hormones no.2, no.1 being Spiral Scratch by The Buzzcocks. Linder of course is mostly known as the person behind the Buzzcocks' Orgasm Addict sleeve and her work for Factory records, and Savage as the author of 'England's Dreaming'. In retrospect the groundbreaking images first seen in the Secret Public are central to the narrative of Punk/Post Punk and the Manchester scene. Jon Savage: "I now think that The Secret Public wrote its own script. It was a deliberately hermetic document that forced you to enter on its own terms. There were few concessions to any ideas of marketing and accessability. Hearts were not worn on the sleeve. It fully explored its dichotomies: cool designed outer images covering angry, savage montages, women placed in bondage but by their own design (or is that in itself a product of internalised oppression?), metropolises that offered opportunity and excitement at the same time as they ate you alive. Its impact was qualitative rather than quantitive: perhaps this is why, at its best, it has not dated at all." [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

        ILLNESS AS METAPHOR

New York City, NY: Farrar, Straus & Giroux, 1978. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. Fine/Fine Dust Jacket.. New York City, NY: Farrar, Straus & Giroux, 1978. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. First Edition/First Printing. 88 pages. The author&#39;s book-length study on subject. One of the most important literary and philosophical texts of the 20th century. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a very small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now very scarce. Presents Susan Sontag&#39;s sustained reflection on the very real dangers of using illness as a metaphor. This landmark study was Sontag&#39;s ferocious yet coolly intellectual response to her first bout with cancer at the age of 35. Diagnosed as a terminal case and given only a few months to live, the writer survived, by her own account, partly by writing the book in her head during her long treatment. She could have written a first-person, "I-fought-and-survived" account in the bestseller manner. It is not surprising that she did not. All of Susan Sontag&#39;s work is autobiographical, but its poignant beauty lies in the fact that her experience is always mediated in her writing. Even though she insisted all her writing life that the point of being a writer is to give pleasure and to shake things up (rather than to give comfort, except in the most extreme cases), "Illness As Metaphor" reflects her genuine concern to help other cancer patients overcome oppressive conceptual and popular "thinking" about illness. An instant classic that has endured, this is a "must-have" title for Susan Sontag collectors. <B><i> This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed, placed, and dated (in the month and year of publication) in black pen on the front free endpaper by the author: "Susan Sontag 6/29/78 Chicago". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page or bookplate. Laid-in is a very rare copy of the Souvenir Announcement of the event. This title is now highly collectible. As far as we know, this is the only such signed copy of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a beauty. It is the single most beautiful copy we have ever seen. Most copies available online have major flaws. A rare signed copy thus. </b></i> Winner of the MacArthur Genius Grant, the National Book Critics Circle Award in 1977 for "On Photography", the National Book Award in 2000 for "In America" and the Jerusalem Prize in 2001. Shimon Peres, in awarding the Jerusalem Prize, described Sontag as "one of the world&#39;s finest writers and greatest minds". One of the most influential and important American writer-intellectuals of the 20th century. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER SUSAN SONTAG TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 0374174431.

12 Original Watercolors of Mostly Aviation Subjects

A suite of 12 original watercolors by the well-known illustrator, Alfred Owles. These are being sold together since they are obviously a series intended originally to illustrate a calendar. Whether or not such a calendar was ever issued has been impossible to discover, despite extended research. The paintings are signed by Owles, but not dated. They are probably from the 1950s or 60s. Owles was famous for his aviation and WWII illustrations, which appeared as illustrations for short stories and articles, as well as on covers, of numerous magazines through the 1940s and on into the 60s. He also had several one-man shows and he taught at an art school in San Francisco. He died in 1978. His aviation illustrations are most highly prized. He did a series for Standard Oil Co. that they used in their magazine ads. He was also an early aerial photographer (WWI), which gave him a powerful sense of aircraft in action and great verisimilitude in his artwork. The theme of these 12 large paintings is primarily aviation firsts, including first trans-Atlantic flight (The Spirit of St. Louis is depicted flying over a choppy sea), first airmail delivery, first balloon ascent, and others. Three of the paintings are not directly aviation. What is apparently the 'October' image is of what one presumes to be the Santa Marie (Columbus's flagship when he - ahem - discovered America, as they say), the Mayflower (for November), and December's image is Jesus preaching in a temple with doves flying above Him. (It would have been more aviation-themed if Owles had painted Santa Claus and his sleigh, but perhaps he lacked my sense of humor?.) Although there is no publishing history for these that I can discover, there are registration marks in the margins, which indicate that they may have been so used. A couple of paintings have a little soil in the image, something that could be cleaned by an expert. They are various sizes, from about 19 X 20" to about 22 x 25", in watercolor on artboard. Additional photos are available upon request. Original Artwork Very Good Condition Stored

        The World According to Garp

Dutton|~| NY: Dutton. (1978). The advance reading copy of his fourth novel and breakthrough book, which went into numerous printings, became a multi-million copy bestseller and a National Book Award winner in its paperback release. The first printing of Garp was reported at 35,000 copies; none of Irving's previous books had sold even 5,000 copies, with one of them having had sales under 2000. Irving switched publishers for this book, and his new publisher decided to promote the novel heavily. After issuing two sets of proofs in small numbers for early readers and reviewers, Dutton printed this advance reading copy for wide distribution to the book trade. It worked in bringing attention to Irving's novel, which became a bestseller; since then, Irving's books have had six-figure first printings and his reputation as a major American novelist is secure. The publisher's risk, in producing such a large first printing, and their marketing efforts -- including creating this advance copy -- played no small part in this transformation. This copy is signed by the author. Spine cocked and creased, with staining to covers; about very good in wrappers. . First Edition. Softcover.
