        The Stand (Signed)

Garden City, NY: Doubleday and Company, Inc., 1978. First edition / First printing.. Hardcover, quarter cloth with boards.. A fine copy in a fine dust jacket.. Octavo. The author's fourth published novel, widely hailed by critics and fans as one of his best, superbly weaves elements of horror and science fiction into a post-apocalyptic nightmare. Basis for the 1994 television mini-series, starring Gary Sinese and Molly Ringwald. ~Publisher's black cloth over tan paper boards with gilt spine titles (a remarkably cheap binding from Doubleday given the massive - 823 page - size of the volume). Stated "First Edition" on the copyright page, copyright (c) 1978 Stephen King, indicating first printing of the first edition (with code "T39" present in the gutter of page 823 and T.S. $12.95 inside flap dust jacket price). ~INSCRIBED by King on the title page, "To Sally - / With Best, / Stephen King / 9/8/79." ~Spine cloth just a touch soiled with rubbing to the gilt titles and the slightest of bowing inward of the spine, else a fine copy in a fine, bright dust jacket with just a touch of rubbing to the corners. ~An excellent copy of King's fourth book, with contemporary signature.

        Song of Solomon

London: Chatto & Windus, 1978. Fine in a Fine dustjacket. Blue boards. The spine is stamped in gilt. Octavo. 337pps. A flawless, collector's-quality copy: clean, tight, square, and bright. All tips are sharp. The text is immaculate; absolutely no reading wear and no previous ownership markings. The dustjacket, glossy in a mylar sleeve, is also as new; the original price is intact. A highly presentable copy of the author's third novel, a high-spot of African-American literature. ".In this celebrated novel, Nobel Prize-winning author Toni Morrison created a new way of rendering the contradictory nuances of black life in America. Its earthy poetic language and striking use of folklore and myth established Morrison as a major voice in contemporary fiction. 'Song of Solomon' begins with one of the most arresting scenes in our century's literature: a dreamlike tableau depicting a man poised on a roof, about to fly into the air, while cloth rose petals swirl above the snow-covered ground and, in the astonished crowd below, one woman sings as another enters premature labor. The child born of that labor, Macon (Milkman) Dead, will eventually come to discover, through his complicated progress to maturity, the meaning of the drama that marked his birth. Toni Morrison's novel is at once a romance of self-discovery, a retelling of the black experience in America that uncovers the inalienable poetry of that experience, and a family saga luminous in its depth, imaginative generosity, and universality. It is also a tribute to the ways in which, in the hands of a master, the ancient art of storytelling can be used to make the mysterious and invisible aspects of human life apparent, real, and firm to the touch."         Architettura, Città, Università: disegni

A notable example with a signed presentation by Giancarlo De Carlo made within the month of publication for Gyorgy Kepes, memorializing their friendship and association. The catalog includes, "Reflections on the Present State of Architecture", the inaugural Thomas Cubitt Lecture given by De Carlo at the Royal Institution, London (1978) and a suite of 37 De Carlo drawings, many to scale designs in double-page reproductions, with also a selection of exploratory works reproduced in white on black paper. This example lacks the 7 pages, laid-in pamphlet with a summary English translation. GIANCARLO DE CARLO: one of the leading architects and city planning theorists of the 20th century. His wide influence extended to his ideas on the future of the city and the inherently socio-political framework of building and the architectural commission. "Architecture's Public (1969) arising out of the ferment of the protests of 1968 with its premise that, "Architecture is too important to be left to architects" and that, "discovery of the user's needs is the prerequisite of the process" is regarded as an essential document regarding the reform and evolution of architecture. Much of his built work is in the city of Urbino and based on his 1958-64 master plan, implemented over the next several decades.  In 1968 when De Carlo curated the 14th Milan Triennale, Kepes was one of the artists chosen from the United States and exhibited his notable light work, "A Light Corridor". KEPES [1906-2001]: born in Hungary, emigrated to the United States by way of Berlin and London. A notable light artist, he first became known for photograms that often explored his fascination with optical phenomena and contributed to what is considered the first major kinetic art work, the 'Light Space Modulator', principally created by Moholy-Nagy (1923-30). At the invitation of Moholy-Nagy he came to Chicago as head of the Department of Light and Color at the New Bauhaus School before accepting a teaching job at Brooklyn College and then coming to MIT in Cambridge, Massachusetts where he would live and work for the rest of his life. Kepes wrote the landmark book, "Language of Vision" (1944) and also the influential essay on light art, "Light as a Creative Medium". He had a great influence on technology artists through his teaching and writing and was the founder of the Center for Advanced Studies (CAVS) at MIT, established to find ways to bring art and technology closer. Kepes was one of the first recipients of the Leonardo Award for the use of new media in art. AVAILABILITY: Very Scarce and a worldwide search for this important De Carlo catalog finds 27 holdings, all at leading institutions (including in the United States, Harvard, Columbia, MIT and the University of California, Berkeley). EDITION NOTE: printed by Alinea Editrice on heavy paper stock, the only edition and format of the exhibition catalog. FORMAT: Publisher's charcoal & gray pictorial wrappers. CONDITION DETAIL: covers with a few instances of trace wear, otherwise Fine. SIZE: 309 x 239 mm (12.17 x 9.41 inches). PAGINATION: Lacks the pamphlet of 7 pages with a summary English translation; confirmed complete in the original Italian with all illustrations, 80 pages with 60 illustrations, many double-page. 3 preliminary leaves including a full-page b/w portrait photograph of De Carlo and a double-page De Carlo drawing; pages 7-25, with three texts, the principal one, a De Carlo essay, translating as, "Reflections on the Present State of Architecture" with 21 b/w illustrations in the text; pp. 26-79, a suite of 37 remarkable De Carlo, architectural drawings, many to scale and double-page, and p. 80, the printing information.         The Gunslinger, The Way Station, the Oracle and the Mountains, The Slow Mutants, The Gunslinger and the Dark Man (The Dark Tower) Gunslinger, The Way Station, the Oracle and the Mountains, The Slow Mutants, The Gunslinger and the Dark Man (The Dark Tower)

Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction, 1978. Paperback. Like New. Each issue about Fine. In March 1970, while a senior at the University of Maine, Stephen King began writing what would turn out to be his Magnum Opus on bright green sheets of paper. The five parts that constitute The Dark Tower: The Gunslinger were originally published in The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction: "The Gunslinger" (October 1978); "The Way Station" (April 1980); "The Oracle and the Mountains" (February 1981); "The Slow Mutants" (July 1981); "The Gunslinger and the Dark Man" (November 1981). ----- This set includes all five installments of The Gunslinger, and constitutes the true first edition of this work with textual differences from the Grant published version. Also, each installment includes never since published sumarries by King as well as his hypothesis of where the story is heading. Each issue is in About Fine condition. No subscription labels. October 1978 issue has very faint spine crease, but spine remains sharp and square. Some instances of light rubbing, but overall the issues are sharp and new-looking. A truly special offering. Comes housed in custom made slipcase. -- The Gunslinger is a novel by American author Stephen King, and is the first volume in the Dark Tower series, which King considers to be his magnum opus. The story centers upon "the gunslinger", who has been chasing after his adversary, "the man in black", for many years. Chronicled is the gunslinger's quest through a large desert, and then a mountain, in search of the man. Along the way, he encounters various people, among them a boy named Jake, who is from another world. ----- The novel was inspired by the poem "Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came" by Robert Browning, which King read as a sophomore at the University of Maine. King explains that he "played with the idea of trying a long romantic novel embodying the feel, if not the exact sense, of the Browning poem.

12 Original Watercolors of Mostly Aviation Subjects

A suite of 12 original watercolors by the well-known illustrator, Alfred Owles. These are being sold together since they are obviously a series intended originally to illustrate a calendar. Whether or not such a calendar was ever issued has been impossible to discover, despite extended research. The paintings are signed by Owles, but not dated. They are probably from the 1950s or 60s. Owles was famous for his aviation and WWII illustrations, which appeared as illustrations for short stories and articles, as well as on covers, of numerous magazines through the 1940s and on into the 60s. He also had several one-man shows and he taught at an art school in San Francisco. He died in 1978. His aviation illustrations are most highly prized. He did a series for Standard Oil Co. that they used in their magazine ads. He was also an early aerial photographer (WWI), which gave him a powerful sense of aircraft in action and great verisimilitude in his artwork. The theme of these 12 large paintings is primarily aviation firsts, including first trans-Atlantic flight (The Spirit of St. Louis is depicted flying over a choppy sea), first airmail delivery, first balloon ascent, and others. Three of the paintings are not directly aviation. What is apparently the 'October' image is of what one presumes to be the Santa Marie (Columbus's flagship when he - ahem - discovered America, as they say), the Mayflower (for November), and December's image is Jesus preaching in a temple with doves flying above Him. (It would have been more aviation-themed if Owles had painted Santa Claus and his sleigh, but perhaps he lacked my sense of humor…..) Although there is no publishing history for these that I can discover, there are registration marks in the margins, which indicate that they may have been so used. A couple of paintings have a little soil in the image, something that could be cleaned by an expert. They are various sizes, from about 19 X 20" to about 22 x 25", in watercolor on artboard. Additional photos are available upon request. . Original Artwork. Very Good Condition. Illus. by Alfred Owles . Stored.

Signed Original Band rider contracts, Sex Pistols American Tour, 1978

Glitterbest, Inc.,1978. Three A4 sized rider contracts between Stone City Attractions and Malcolm McLaren's management company, Glitterbest, and signed by three of the individual members of the Sex Pistols. All are dated January 4th1978. The band members have each signed one of the contracts in black ball point pen. Johnny Rotten has signed using his real name, John Lydon. Sid Vicious has also signed using his real name, John Beverly. The third signed by Steve Jones. The contracts relate toamong other things; backstage security, approval of support artists, band's exit from the stage must be concealed from the view of the audience, sound and light check specifications and request for cold beer, a platter of meat, cheese & fruit, fruit juices and towels for the stage. ---- The Sex pistols Ill-fated final tour was due to start in the North of the U.S in late december 1977 but due to problems getting work permits and visa's, because of some band members criminal records, the first dates were cancelled and in the end the band only played 7 dates of the tour, starting on January 5th. --- Stone City Attractions were promotors for two of the venues that were played, Both in Texas; Randy's Rodeo in San Antonio, which the band played on 8th January 1978, & Longhorn Ballroom, Dallas, played on January 10th. These contracts are for either, or possibly both, of those dates. The tour famously finished in San Francisco on January 14th, with the band playing a cover of The Stooges "No Fun" as encore and Lydon sneering "Ever get the feeling you've been cheated?. Good Night" before leaving the stage. The band split up three days later. :

        Café Lehmitz

Munich: Schirmer/Mosel,, 1978. Text von Roger Anderson. Quarto. Printed card wrappers, as issued. With the original glassine wrapper. Black and white photographs in the text throughout. Card wrappers partially toned, and title page creased, but an excellent copy with a few small tears to the glassine. First edition, first printing of Petersens most significant work, the result of a three year project in which the photographer captured the lives of the denizens of a Hamburg bar. It is regarded as a seminal work in the development of European photography for its intimacy. Petersen himself said that "the people at the Café Lehmitz had a presence and a sincerity that I myself lacked. It was okay to be desperate, to be tender, to sit all alone or share the company of others. There was a great warmth and tolerance in this destitute setting.
