        American Constitutional Law.

New York: The Foundation Press, 1978. - First edition of the legal scholar's classic treatise on constitutional law. Quarto, original red boards. In near fine condition, issued without a dust jacket. Signed by the author, "For ______, For in the end, is it not fitting that a book about the Constitution should close by studying what the Constitution is not about? Laurence H. Tribe June 2009." Laurence H. Tribe’s highly regarded treatise on constitutional law is organized around issues, or constitutional functions, rather than being a sequential discussion of the text to the Constitution. The text is heavily footnoted with references to treatises, law review articles, the U.S. Code, and Supreme Court cases. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Mao Tsetung: A Selection of Photographs

[China]: The People's Fine Arts Publishing House Foreign Languages Press, 1978. Fine in gilt-stamped red boards, publisher's original acetate jacket, plain card slipcase. An exemplary copy.. First Edition. Folio in card slipcase. Edited by the Editorial Department of Chinese Photography. 200 color portraits of Mao in various guises, presented in chronological order. The photographer, Hou Bo, was never credited for these pictures, and wound up in a labor camp after falling out with Mao's wife. The uniformity of color in Bo's images, combined with her uncanny knack for capturing Mao's unchanging features, create the feel of an artist's book, rather than an exercise in state sponsored propaganda.         KARSH CANADIANS. Signed

Toronto: University of Toronto Press, 1978 First Edition of these iconic images of famous Canadians, Inscribed by Yousuf Karsh in the year of publication on the half-title page to author Hugh MacLennan, whose photograph appears on pp. 106. "For Hugh MacLennan, With fond remembrances and the admiration of Yousuf Karsh, Nov. 7, 1978." A fine copy in silver cloth, silver titles, in a fine pictorial dustwrapper with some very minimal use. 4to. 203 pp. An exceptional association copy. Hugh MacLennan (1907-1990) was a widely respected Canadian novelist & academic. MacLennan wrote primarily of Canadian themes & was credited with being the first writer to establish a national literary identity for Canada. Works like Barometer Rising, 1941 & Two Solitudes, 1945 established his credentials as one of Canada's greatest novelists. He also published several collections of essays & has himself been the subject of academic study. The National Film Board (NFB) of Canada paid tribute to MacLennan by dramatizing his life and work. In portraying Canada's national character in fiction, the Nova Scotia-born novelist & essayist assured other younger writers that their country was worth writing about. He won the Governor General’s Award five times.. Signed by Author. 1st Edition.

12 Original Watercolors of Mostly Aviation Subjects

A suite of 12 original watercolors by the well-known illustrator, Alfred Owles. These are being sold together since they are obviously a series intended originally to illustrate a calendar. Whether or not such a calendar was ever issued has been impossible to discover, despite extended research. The paintings are signed by Owles, but not dated. They are probably from the 1950s or 60s. Owles was famous for his aviation and WWII illustrations, which appeared as illustrations for short stories and articles, as well as on covers, of numerous magazines through the 1940s and on into the 60s. He also had several one-man shows and he taught at an art school in San Francisco. He died in 1978. His aviation illustrations are most highly prized. He did a series for Standard Oil Co. that they used in their magazine ads. He was also an early aerial photographer (WWI), which gave him a powerful sense of aircraft in action and great verisimilitude in his artwork. The theme of these 12 large paintings is primarily aviation firsts, including first trans-Atlantic flight (The Spirit of St. Louis is depicted flying over a choppy sea), first airmail delivery, first balloon ascent, and others. Three of the paintings are not directly aviation. What is apparently the 'October' image is of what one presumes to be the Santa Marie (Columbus's flagship when he - ahem - discovered America, as they say), the Mayflower (for November), and December's image is Jesus preaching in a temple with doves flying above Him. (It would have been more aviation-themed if Owles had painted Santa Claus and his sleigh, but perhaps he lacked my sense of humor?.) Although there is no publishing history for these that I can discover, there are registration marks in the margins, which indicate that they may have been so used. A couple of paintings have a little soil in the image, something that could be cleaned by an expert. They are various sizes, from about 19 X 20" to about 22 x 25", in watercolor on artboard. Additional photos are available upon request. Original Artwork Very Good Condition Stored

        Music.

8°, 98 nn. S, m. zahlr. farb u. s/w Abbildung, Broschur., Tadell.

[Screenplay]: The Victim's Tuxedo: Screenplay based on the short story The Corpse Next Door by Cornell Woolrich

Silver Screen Productions New York: Silver Screen Productions. 1978. Screenplay. Quarto. 77 pages, one page laid in. Bradbound in orange Studio Duplicating Service wrapper. A couple of ink changes in the text, wrappers a little soiled, a very good copy. Laid in is one page photocopied from the screenplay with an ink change, and a note to call a New York literary agent on the verso. A "neo-noir" treatment of the Woolrich story, the film was eventually made in 1980 as Union City, directed by Reichert (a.k.a. Marcus Reichert), as a vehicle for singer Debbie Harry, of the rock group Blondie. An interesting film that didn't achieve the desired effect of catapulting Harry to film stardom, though she continues to appear in films from time to time. .

        The Stand

NY: Doubleday. (1978). One of King's early novels published by Doubleday, in a remarkably cheap binding. A massive book -- 823 pages -- which some consider his best. Nonetheless, a larger edition with "restored" text was issued in 1990. This copy is inscribed by King in 1979: "For Ron, with best wishes." Several small stains to page edges; a near fine copy in a near fine dust jacket with a little rubbing and a bit of dampstaining to the base of the spine. We seldom see the early Stephen King novels with contemporary or early inscriptions. . First Edition. Hardcover.

Administrative Behavior: A Study of Decision-Making Processes in Administrative Organization. Preliminary Edition.Chicago: Illinois Institute of Technology, 1945.

Very rare pre-publication of this hugely influential book which the Royal Swedish Academy cited as "epoch-making" in awarding the 1978 Nobel Prize in Economics to Simon "for his pioneering research into the decision-making process within economic organizations". OCLC locates just one copy of this edition (Yale).<br/><br/> "Influenced by the organizational research that was being conducted in other social sciences economists in the 1930s began to look at the structure of companies and at the decision-making process in an entirely new way. Simon's work was of the utmost importance for this new line of development. In his epoch-making book, <i>Administrative Behavior</i> (1947), and in a number of subsequent works, he described the company as an adaptive system of physical, personal and social components that are held together by a network of intercommunications and by the willingness of its members to cooperate and to strive towards a common goal. What is new in Simon's ideas is, most of all, that he rejects the assumption made in the classic theory of the firm of an omniscient, rational, profit-maximizing entrepreneur. He replaces this entrepreneur by a number of cooperating decision-makers, whose capacities for rational action are limited, both by a lack of knowledge about the total consequences of their decisions, and by personal and social ties. Since these decision-makers cannot choose the best alternative, as can the classic entrepreneur, they have to be content with a satisfactory alternative. Individual companies, therefore, strive not to maximize profits but to find acceptable solutions to acute problems. This might mean that a number of partly contradictory goals have to be reached at the same time. Each decision-maker in such a company attempts to find a satisfactory solution to his own set of problems, taking into consideration how others are solving theirs. <br/><br/> "Simon's theories and observations about decision-making in organizations apply very well to the systems and techniques of planning, budgeting and control that are used in modern business and public administration. These theories are less elegant and less suited to overall economic analysis than is the classic profit-maximizing theory, but they provide greater possibilities for understanding and predictions in a number of areas. They have been used successfully to explain and predict such diverse activities as the distribution of access to information and decision-making within companies, market adjustment to limited competition, choosing investment portfolios and choosing a country in which to establish a foreign investment. Modern business economics and administrative research are largely based on Simon's ideas." (Nobel Press Release). <br/><br/> The first edition was published by Macmillan in 1947; the second, in 1957; the third, in 1976; and the fourth, in 1997. A 1990 article in <i>Public Administration Review</i> named it the "public administration book of the half century" (1940-1990). It was voted the fifth most influential management book of the 20th century in a poll of the Fellows of the Academy of Management. See also the detailed Wikipedia article on the book.. Offset typed leaves (280 x 218 mm) punch bound in metal clasp and stiff old cardboard wrappers (chipped and teared), vi[i] 247 leaves (printed on one side of the sheet, only), verso of title page stamped 'MAR 11 1945'
