[Screenplay]: The Victim's Tuxedo: Screenplay based on the short story The Corpse Next Door by Cornell Woolrich

Silver Screen Productions New York: Silver Screen Productions. 1978. Screenplay. Quarto. 77 pages, one page laid in. Bradbound in orange Studio Duplicating Service wrapper. A couple of ink changes in the text, wrappers a little soiled, a very good copy. Laid in is one page photocopied from the screenplay with an ink change, and a note to call a New York literary agent on the verso. A "neo-noir" treatment of the Woolrich story, the film was eventually made in 1980 as Union City, directed by Reichert (a.k.a. Marcus Reichert), as a vehicle for singer Debbie Harry, of the rock group Blondie. An interesting film that didn't achieve the desired effect of catapulting Harry to film stardom, though she continues to appear in films from time to time. .

        The Stand

NY: Doubleday. (1978). One of King's early novels published by Doubleday, in a remarkably cheap binding. A massive book -- 823 pages -- which some consider his best. Nonetheless, a larger edition with "restored" text was issued in 1990. This copy is inscribed by King in 1979: "For Ron, with best wishes." Several small stains to page edges; a near fine copy in a near fine dust jacket with a little rubbing and a bit of dampstaining to the base of the spine. We seldom see the early Stephen King novels with contemporary or early inscriptions. . First Edition. Hardcover.

Administrative Behavior: A Study of Decision-Making Processes in Administrative Organization. Preliminary Edition.Chicago: Illinois Institute of Technology, 1945.

Very rare pre-publication of this hugely influential book which the Royal Swedish Academy cited as "epoch-making" in awarding the 1978 Nobel Prize in Economics to Simon "for his pioneering research into the decision-making process within economic organizations". OCLC locates just one copy of this edition (Yale).

"Influenced by the organizational research that was being conducted in other social sciences economists in the 1930s began to look at the structure of companies and at the decision-making process in an entirely new way. Simon's work was of the utmost importance for this new line of development. In his epoch-making book, Administrative Behavior (1947), and in a number of subsequent works, he described the company as an adaptive system of physical, personal and social components that are held together by a network of intercommunications and by the willingness of its members to cooperate and to strive towards a common goal. What is new in Simon's ideas is, most of all, that he rejects the assumption made in the classic theory of the firm of an omniscient, rational, profit-maximizing entrepreneur. He replaces this entrepreneur by a number of cooperating decision-makers, whose capacities for rational action are limited, both by a lack of knowledge about the total consequences of their decisions, and by personal and social ties. Since these decision-makers cannot choose the best alternative, as can the classic entrepreneur, they have to be content with a satisfactory alternative. Individual companies, therefore, strive not to maximize profits but to find acceptable solutions to acute problems. This might mean that a number of partly contradictory goals have to be reached at the same time. Each decision-maker in such a company attempts to find a satisfactory solution to his own set of problems, taking into consideration how others are solving theirs.

"Simon's theories and observations about decision-making in organizations apply very well to the systems and techniques of planning, budgeting and control that are used in modern business and public administration. These theories are less elegant and less suited to overall economic analysis than is the classic profit-maximizing theory, but they provide greater possibilities for understanding and predictions in a number of areas. They have been used successfully to explain and predict such diverse activities as the distribution of access to information and decision-making within companies, market adjustment to limited competition, choosing investment portfolios and choosing a country in which to establish a foreign investment. Modern business economics and administrative research are largely based on Simon's ideas." (Nobel Press Release).

The first edition was published by Macmillan in 1947; the second, in 1957; the third, in 1976; and the fourth, in 1997. A 1990 article in Public Administration Review named it the "public administration book of the half century" (1940-1990). It was voted the fifth most influential management book of the 20th century in a poll of the Fellows of the Academy of Management. See also the detailed Wikipedia article on the book.. The World According to Garp

NY: Dutton. (1978). His fourth novel, and his breakthrough book, which went into numerous printings and became a multi-million copy bestseller and a National Book Award winner in its paperback release. Basis for the well-received movie. The first printing of Garp was 35,000 copies -- far larger than any of Irving's previous novels but far short of any of the books that came later: his next novel, The Hotel New Hampshire, had a 100,000 copy first printing and since then all his books have had first printings well into six figures. Inscribed by the author to a former student of Irving's at Wyndham College, and although the inscription is not dated it was reportedly signed on the night before publication at a reading in Northampton, Massachusetts. It is hard to remember, but before Garp John Irving was a little-known literary writer, not a major, bestselling author. That he was giving a reading on the night before publication in a town like Northampton, MA, rather than New York City or San Francisco is in keeping with that fact. Foxing to top edge; narrow edge sunning at spine; near fine in a near fine dust jacket with a bit of foxing to verso and modest wear to the crown. . First Edition. Hardcover.
