        Ask the Angels

Double R Books, Orange, Calif 1978 - First edition. Compiled by Marcy Blaustein. Photographs by Donna Santisi. Comb-bound at the top in photographic wrappers. 60 individually numbered photos printed rectos only. Slight rubbing, just about fine. Curiously, there is a rubberstamped number ("188") on the rear wrap, whether indicating a limitation, a price, or whatever else, we have not determined. Wonderful and rare compilation of band photos centered around L.A. Punk venues. Artists include Patti Smith (to whom the book is dedicated), Lenny Kaye, Elvis Costello, The Mumps, Screamers, Tom Verlaine, The Ramones, The Runaways (with a good Lita Ford "guitar goddess" shot), The Zippers, Iggy Pop, Dead Boys, The Damned, Backstage Pass, The Dickies, Deborah Harry (including one of her playing together with Joan Jett), Talking Heads, Suzi Quatro, The Weirdoos, and several more in various combinations, and other more esoteric bands. Rare and fragile. Recently reprinted in 2010, *OCLC* locates a single copy of this first edition (at Mills College). [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

        Winston S. Churchill, The Official Biography, Companion Volume IV, Parts 1, 2 & 3, January 1917 - November 1922

Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1978. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Near fine/Very good. The Official Biography of Winston Churchill, initiated by Randolph Churchill but completed by Martin Gilbert, is an epic piece of scholarship about a singularly epic life, comprising eight mammoth main text volumes and - so far - sixteen accompanying document or "Companion" volumes. The eight main text volumes were published between 1966 and 1988. Publication of the Companion volumes continues today. These three volumes accompany the fourth volume of Churchill's Official Biography and cover January 1917 to November 1922, encompassing Churchill's return to the government after the Dardanelles disaster and his final six years in power as a Liberal, serving at various Cabinet posts in the coalition government of Lloyd George. This is the elusive U.S. first edition, only printing, which is far more scarce than its British counterpart. This is a full set of all three Volume IV companions, near-fine in very good dust jackets. The British first editions were bound in solid red cloth. These U.S. editions were more elaborately bound, with tan linen spines over dark red buckram boards with red spine title blocks printed in black and gilt. The bindings also feature head and foot bands and dark blue ruled transitions at the border between the tan linen and red buckram. Here the bindings are clean, bright, tight, and square. The only exterior flaws we find are bumps at the Part 3 lower corners and upper spine. The contents are crisp, clean, and bright. No spotting. No previous ownership marks. We note a hint of soiling to the top edges and that the lower portion of pages 1637-1640 of Part 3 were not fully trimmed by the binder. All three dust jackets are unclipped, still bearing the original price on the upper front flap. All three jackets are also complete, with no losses or tears. The spine lettering of this edition proved incredibly vulnerable to sunning, often fading to nearly white. This set is an exception, featuring bright, entirely unfaded spine printing. Unfortunately, the spines are toned and soiled, most significantly on the Part 3 dust jacket. The blank rear faces show lighter soiling with the front faces remaining clean and bright. The only signs of jacket wear are slight wrinkling at a few spine ends. The dust jackets are protected in removable, archival quality clear covers. Note that this large, heavy set may require additional postage. Bibliographic reference: Zoller A302d.

The recipient Josette was the wife of the cubist artist Henri Hayden (1883-1970). The Haydens first encountered Beckett in 1943 in Roussillon, a small village in France where Beckett was in hiding and Henri and Josette had arrived, also in flight from the Nazis.         The Black Nation: Position of the Revolutionary Communist League (M-L-M) on The Afro-American National Question

no publisher, [Newark, New Jersey 1978 - Quarto. 57pp. Stapled photomechanically reproduced sheets with printed stapled wrappers. About very good with wear at the extremities, price sticker, and heavy staining to the front and rear wrapper affecting a few interior pages. Amiri Baraka's personal copy Signed on the first page. The Revolutionary Communist League began as the student led African Liberation Support Committee that changed its name to the Congress of African People in 1972 under the leadership of Baraka with a new focus on Black cultural nationalism. The group adopted Maoism in 1976 and changed its name yet again to the Revolutionary Communist League, generating this document penned by Baraka. By 1980 the group merged with the League of Revolutionary Struggle and it appears this copy is Baraka's attempt shortly thereafter to update their positions. The document contains numerous comments, deletions, and additions in Baraka's hand stating with the title that he has partially crossed out and written "LRS (MC)" above the former organization's name. Throughout he has made various emendations: circling obsolete group names and writing "its demise" next to them; putting question marks or "update" next to different sections; adding in long passages or whole paragraphs to expand particular ideas; and with corrections on nearly every page. While we could not definitively identify whether these corrections were ever put into print as a whole, we suspect parts were likely incorporated into Baraka's polemic "RWH on the Black Liberation Movement: Wrong Again!" published in 1980. Rare. *OCLC* locates three copies of this publication. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

        The Stand

Doubleday, New York 1978 - 1st edition/1st printing. Stated First Edition, with the proper T39 code at the lower gutter of the last text page. SIGNED by the author on the front end page: 'For Dan, Best, Stephen King 8/22/80'. Fine book: unread and 'very' tight, straight, clean, unworn binding edges and corners, the gilt on the spine is bright and sharp, and the spine itself has none of the concavity or creasing you normally find with this very thick book when it has been read. The page edges are clean, binding corners sharp. The only thing I can find wrong with it at all is that the cloth at the upper spine end has a bit of flexibility to it but isn't limp or crushed. The Fine dustjacket has had 'no' restoration; it is price intact, crisp, clean and unfaded with no chips or tears; it does have an almost unnoticeable very thin vertical fold line to the front flap. This book is most of King fans' favorite, and rightly so. It is a superbly written book about an after-the-apocalypse world when a plague escapes a government lab and kills most of the population, and of the fight between good and evil among the survivors in the U.S. Filmed as a multi-part mini-series for TV. Reissued in 1990 containing the few hundred pages that the publisher made King shorten the book by in 1978. Collector's copy.; 8-7/16" x 5-3/4"; 823 pages; Signed by Author [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        The Secret Public

New Hormones (ORG2) January 1978, Manchester - Folio. Unpaginated (12pp). Printed wraps as issued. Numerous Black & White collages. 1000 copies published, though most were pinned on walls or destroyed. In superb condition with only a little wear to corners and covers. No pin holes or writing. More images available on request. Ultra scarce. Linder Sterling and Jon Savage's 'The Secret Public' could be one of the most important pieces of publishing from the punk/new wave period. Published as New Hormones no.2, no.1 being Spiral Scratch by The Buzzcocks. Linder of course is mostly known as the person behind the Buzzcocks' Orgasm Addict sleeve and her work for Factory records, and Savage as the author of 'England's Dreaming'. In retrospect the groundbreaking images first seen in the Secret Public are central to the narrative of Punk/Post Punk and the Manchester scene. Jon Savage: "I now think that The Secret Public wrote its own script. It was a deliberately hermetic document that forced you to enter on its own terms. There were few concessions to any ideas of marketing and accessability. Hearts were not worn on the sleeve. It fully explored its dichotomies: cool designed outer images covering angry, savage montages, women placed in bondage but by their own design (or is that in itself a product of internalised oppression?), metropolises that offered opportunity and excitement at the same time as they ate you alive. Its impact was qualitative rather than quantitive: perhaps this is why, at its best, it has not dated at all." [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a very small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now very scarce. Presents Susan Sontag&#39;s sustained reflection on the very real dangers of using illness as a metaphor. This landmark study was Sontag&#39;s ferocious yet coolly intellectual response to her first bout with cancer at the age of 35. Diagnosed as a terminal case and given only a few months to live, the writer survived, by her own account, partly by writing the book in her head during her long treatment. She could have written a first-person, "I-fought-and-survived" account in the bestseller manner. It is not surprising that she did not. All of Susan Sontag&#39;s work is autobiographical, but its poignant beauty lies in the fact that her experience is always mediated in her writing. Even though she insisted all her writing life that the point of being a writer is to give pleasure and to shake things up (rather than to give comfort, except in the most extreme cases), "Illness As Metaphor" reflects her genuine concern to help other cancer patients overcome oppressive conceptual and popular "thinking" about illness. An instant classic that has endured, this is a "must-have" title for Susan Sontag collectors. <B><i> This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed, placed, and dated (in the month and year of publication) in black pen on the front free endpaper by the author: "Susan Sontag 6/29/78 Chicago". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page or bookplate. Laid-in is a very rare copy of the Souvenir Announcement of the event. This title is now highly collectible. As far as we know, this is the only such signed copy of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a beauty. It is the single most beautiful copy we have ever seen. Most copies available online have major flaws. A rare signed copy thus. </b></i> Winner of the MacArthur Genius Grant, the National Book Critics Circle Award in 1977 for "On Photography", the National Book Award in 2000 for "In America" and the Jerusalem Prize in 2001. Shimon Peres, in awarding the Jerusalem Prize, described Sontag as "one of the world&#39;s finest writers and greatest minds". One of the most influential and important American writer-intellectuals of the 20th century. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER SUSAN SONTAG TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 0374174431.
