        The Memoirs

1978 - Illustrations. First edition. 8vo., cloth, dust jacket. New York, Grosset and Dunlap. A presentation copy, inscribed on the half title page 'To Profesor A.L. Rowse with profound respect and best wishes from Richard Nixon 1-25-79'. There are frequent pencil annotations to the text and some waspish remarks on the rear endpaper, with much use of phrases such as 'Humbug', 'silly bitch', 'too good to be true' and other apothegms from Dr.Rowse's repertoire. Tipped in a 9 page undated note in a very shaky hand from Donald Cameron Watt, former Emeritus Professor at the London School of Economics, explaining howa signed copy of Nixon's memoirs came to be in the Library at LSE, reminiscing about a former student from the USA, Frank Gannon(who became one of Nixon's aides), and mentioning that John F. Kennedy had intended to study at the LSE. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        The Song of Solomon

London: [Willow Press], 1978. Limited Edition. Leather. Near fine. Allix, Susan. Number 15 of 50, folio size, 20 unnumbered leaves, signed by Susan Allix. Limited edition, number 15 of 50 copies. Susan Allix, a British book artist, has her own press and creates handmade books using a variety of fine papers and textures with letterpress printing and embossing, and is usually the author, illustrator, printer and binder of her works. One of her works was selected for the exhibit "Bookmarking Book Art", held at the Grosvenor Rare Book Room, and are in collections at The British Library, Yale University, National Gallery of Art Washington DC, The Claremont Colleges in California, the Rochester Institute of Technology, and the University of Alberta. The Song of Solomon is her second book, considered by many to be her finest work, and features biblical text accompanied by 21 original etchings and aquatints. "The Song of Solomon" or "The Song of Songs" or "Canticles" is the fifth book of Wisdom in the Old Testament, typically read on the Sabbath over Passover. The intimate verses are a conversation between two lovers, meant to be an allegory for the union between Christ and his Church. ***DESCRIPTION: Original morocco binding by Susan Allix in "Oasis" green, color onlays, hand tooling in gilt and blind to both boards, decorative turn-ins with color onlays, handmade white endpapers, deckled edges, 21 color etchings and aquatints with original tissue guards, 18 point Monotype Bembo italic type, BFK Rives Velin Cuve paper, folio 12 7/8" x 9 3/4", [40], [1, colophon], [3, blank] pp., limited edition, number 15 of 50 copies, signed by Susan Allix. Housed in a green clamshell box with felt lining. ***CONDITION: An absolutely stunning copy, sumptuously bound by the artist's own hand, each binding has hand-tooled decorations that make it unique; the leather binding is smooth and supple, the text block is strong and square with solid hinges, the plates are rich and bright (note that one or two tissue guards are missing), and the volume is entirely free of prior owner markings; this copy is like new; near fine. The clamshell box has some minor evidence of shelf-wear and fraying, but remains strong and sturdy. ***POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. ***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind book we sell.         Orkestr [Orchestra]. Samizdat edition

Moscow: self-published, 1978. Fifty-three unbound leaves of carbon copy typescript to rectos, onion skin paper (30 × 20.5 cm), with title and foreign words filled in by hand (by the author or typist). Very good. Samizdat edition of the second collection of poems by Elena Shvarts (1948-2010), one of the key figures of the Leningrad unofficial literary scene. Intensely spiritual and stylistically unorthodox, Shvarts's poetry could not be published in Russia until Perestroika. In addition to illicitly reproduced samizdat copies, it appeared in various émigré publications in Paris and the American "Ardis" publisher. Increasingly, Shvarts's work is being studied not just in Russia, but by Western scholars; a recent article characterizes her writing thus: "The world of the unseen, with its spirits and demons, takes on nearly tangible form in the verse of the St. Petersburg poet Elena Shvarts. In visions both playful and somber, Shvarts conveys a spirituality that derives from intense exploration of the self" (Goldstein 2015, 239). Parts of the present collection were first published in the Leningrad samizdat journal Chasy (The Hours), while others appeared here first. The indication of Moscow as the origin of this samizdat copy may have been a ruse. Apart from contributions in the samizdat journals Chasy and Obvodnyi kanal, KVK and OCLC show no Shvarts samizdat titles.
