Mathieu, May 13th, 1978., New Haven - Miller, Henry [Bert Mathieu]. TERRIFIC 4 PAGE ALS FROM BERT MATHIEU May 13th, 1978. Terrific 4 page Als from Miller's friend [& translator of Miller & Rimbaud], Bert Mathieu, Univ. of New Haven, May 13th 1978 covering a lot of territory. - In part. "My dear Henry / I spoke with Tony on the phone a few days ago and he assured me that everything was OK with regards to the Rimbaud illuminations. I can't tell you how ecstatically happy it made me to hear you were giving your approval on all counts! You're a Swedenborgian "Angel" under that gruff exterior, do you know that? And I love you". Bert goes on to discuss the publisher's aim to produce a perfect book sparing nothing to get the job done. He tells Miller that he's down somewhat because his French girl, Cecile has had to fly to Nantes because her dad was ill & that she won't return any time soon so he'll be joining her at the end of June "when I start my summer-long writing /tramping / research adventure in Provence and Rimbaud's Charlesville - it is there that I plan to finish my translation of the third Rimbaud book, the early rhymed poems. . . Right there on the banks of the Meuse where he composed the "Bateau ivre". . . I want to visit Nantes because it is the birthplace of my favorite boyhood writer, Jules Verne but I also want to go to Carnac and Mont St. Michel. Needless to say I'll send you quickie apercus. . . Tony assures me you're in fine shape. Durrell says you are "ecstatic." Toujours parmi les anges, quoi! / Ma Main amie! / Bert" with the original mailing envelope on which Miller has written: "Tony - Please answer his question. Too tired today to answer him .

Ricordiamo qui alcuni dei suoi autori: Angese, Carlo Cagni, Mario Canale, Barbara Cannata, Giovanna Caronia, Francesco Cascioli, Ciro, Forattini, Franco D., Lucio Lanza, Cinzia Leone, Karen (Jacopo Fo), Jiga Melick, Piero Lo Sardo, Angelo Pasquini, Anna-Dora-Marisa le tre sorelle Bandiera, Giuliano, Guglielmo, Marione, Carlo Marulli, Gerardo Orsini, Gian Pietro Parmegiani, Stefano, Enzo Sferra, Simonetta, Tersite (Vincenzo Sparagna), Vincino, Alain Denis, Fanale, Dario Fiori, Sandro Giustibelli, Yves Got, Tom Johnston, Tanino Liberatore, Massimo Mattioli, Franco Moretti, Tony Munzlinger, Andrea Pazienza, Roberto Perini, Reiser, Rochette, Filippo Scozzari, Sergio Saviane, Stefano Tamburini, Roland Topor, Vincino, Wilem, Wolinski, Pino Zac. Comb-bound at the top in photographic wrappers. 60 individually numbered photos printed rectos only. Slight rubbing, just about fine. Wonderful and rare compilation of band photos centered around L.A. Punk venues. Artists include Patti Smith (to whom the book is dedicated), Lenny Kaye, Elvis Costello, The Mumps, Screamers, Tom Verlaine, The Ramones, The Runaways (with a good Lita Ford "guitar goddess" shot), The Zippers, Iggy Pop, Dead Boys, The Damned, Backstage Pass, The Dickies, Deborah Harry (including one of her playing together with Joan Jett), Talking Heads, Suzi Quatro, The Weirdoos, and several more in various combinations, and other more esoteric bands. Rare and fragile. Recently reprinted in 2010, OCLC locates a single copy of this first edition (at Mills College). Parr and Badger, The Photobook Vol. 3, p. 220 .

Printed matt black textured paper-covered boards with title printed in gray on cover and spine, in green laminated photographically illustrated dust jacket. Photographs by Daido Moriyama. In this book, however, all photographs were taken in Tokyo. In these he takes objects existing in the world such as posters, magazines, mannequins, etc., which other people see as mass media, and places them on his own stage as though they were his own objects. When we look at these photographs.the reflection of his soul, we are made to notice what exactly we are looking at in daily life."         Shosha [Signed association copy, that of Erwin Leiser]

Farrar Straus Giroux, New York 1978 - New York: Farrar Strauss Giroux, 1978. First Edition / First Printing. Signed, inscribed, and dated (May 29, 1981) by the author on the ffep to Erwin Leiser. Octavo, 277 pp. Fine copy in a near-fine dustjacket showing a bit of small-scale edgewear. At the time of its release Singer's first novel in six years, Shosha is a love story in typically offbeat Singer style. Originally written in Yiddish as were almost all most of his novels, Shosha's English title is the name of a childhood love of the protagonist. An aspiring writer in 1930's Poland, his career is being given a boost by a visiting American couple, and he's essaying the romancing not only of the American wife but of several other women as well when he again encounters Shosha. Been there, done that, though not in Poland. Erwin Leiser (1923-1996) was a highly-regarded German-born journalist and director of trenchant documentaries both historical and political in character, having especially to do with the Nazis and the holocaust, the latter being a documentary topic for which he may have been the first director. A handsome example. L53n [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

The Black Nation: Position of the Revolutionary Communist League (M-L-M) on The Afro-American National Question

[Newark, New Jersey: no publisher. 1978]. Quarto. 57pp. Stapled photomechanically reproduced sheets with printed stapled wrappers. About very good with wear at the extremities, price sticker, and heavy staining to the front and rear wrapper affecting a few interior pages. Amiri Baraka's personal copy Signed on the first page. The Revolutionary Communist League began as the student led African Liberation Support Committee that changed its name to the Congress of African People in 1972 under the leadership of Baraka with a new focus on Black cultural nationalism. The group adopted Maoism in 1976 and changed its name yet again to the Revolutionary Communist League, generating this document penned by Baraka. By 1980 the group merged with the League of Revolutionary Struggle and it appears this copy is Baraka's attempt shortly thereafter to update their positions. The document contains numerous comments, deletions, and additions in Baraka's hand stating with the title that he has partially crossed out and written "LRS (MC)" above the former organization's name. Throughout he has made various emendations: circling obsolete group names and writing "its demise" next to them; putting question marks or "update" next to different sections; adding in long passages or whole paragraphs to expand particular ideas; and with corrections on nearly every page. While we could not definitively identify whether these corrections were ever put into print as a whole, we suspect parts were likely incorporated into Baraka's polemic "RWH on the Black Liberation Movement: Wrong Again!" published in 1980. Rare. OCLC locates three copies of this publication. .

Zondervan Publishing House, Grand Rapids, MI, U.S.A. 1978 - Inscribed "Thanks / (signed) Carl Perkins / 5-13-96" on first blank page in black ink. He received a Grammy Award for the 1986 album "Class of '55" recorded with Cash, Lewis, and Roy Orbison. That same year he received a Career Achievement Award from the Academy of Country Music.       Victor Gollancz, London 1978 - A very fine signed first edition of Philip Pullman's second novel - writing with great visual imagination around the quotation 'Everything is what it seems' when in reality it is not. The book is notable for being the last adult novel written by the author and for the jacket photo showing how Pullman looked with a full head of hair in his early thirties. The very fine book is bound in green cloth boards with gold titles on the spine and appears to be unread. The dust wrapper with the price on the inside flap has no cuts or tears. The book and cover are in very fine condition with a few small mould damp stains on the inside back cover on the top right hand side, hidden by the dust wrapper and evidence of a small label removed from the inside front cover. Galatea was signed by Pullman in his trade mark blue directly on the title page at a UK book festival with the quotation 'Everything is what it seems' underlined in blue also. The 287 page book is published by Gollancz in London as part of their Fantasy Collection and is the first edition, first impression, first printing . Digital photos available. Clear removable film protects the dustwrapper. Shipped by Royal Mail Special Delivery or Airsure with Insurance paid at no additional cost to Abebooks standard shippping rate. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
