        THE STAND

Doubleday & Company, Inc., Garden City 1978 - First issue dustwrapper with $12.95 price. Made into a television mini-series that was well received and often rebroadcast. A thick book not especially well made by a publisher with a reputation during this period for poorly manufactured books; thus uncommon to find in this condition.         [Screenplay]: The Victim's Tuxedo: Screenplay based on the short story The Corpse Next Door by Cornell Woolrich

New York: Silver Screen Productions. 1978. Screenplay. Quarto. 77 pages, one page laid in. Bradbound in orange Studio Duplicating Service wrapper. A couple of ink changes in the text, wrappers a little soiled, a very good copy. Laid in is one page photocopied from the screenplay with an ink change, and a note to call a New York literary agent on the verso. A "neo-noir" treatment of the Woolrich story, the film was eventually made in 1980 as Union City, directed by Reichert (a.k.a. Marcus Reichert), as a vehicle for singer Debbie Harry, of the rock group Blondie. An interesting film that didn't achieve the desired effect of catapulting Harry to film stardom, though she continues to appear in films from time to time. .

[Photoplay]: Dog Soldiers: A First Draft Screenplay

Manhattan Beach, California: Charles Eastman. [no date, but presumably pre-1978]. First. Screenplay. Quarto. 191 leaves printed rectos only. Photocopied sheets, bradbound into plain, unprinted pale blue wrappers. A little age-toned and light foxing on the wrappers and foredge, else near fine. The photocopied sheets reproduce the punch holes, so clearly copied from a bound example, but seemingly contemporary and presumably one of very few copies. Unproduced screenplay from Robert Stone's novel Dog Soldiers. The novel was eventually produced in 1978 as Who'll Stop the Rain with a screenplay by Stone and Judith Rascoe. Eastman had three screenplays produced, the best known probably the 1970 film Little Fauss and Big Halsy. OCLC locates a single copy, at the Dallas Public Library. .

Untitled (Diptych from the series 40 Sockel [40 Pedestals]).

., . 1978 - Diptych drawing from the series of 80 "40 Sockel" drawings. One sheet is pencil and grey gouache on coffee-stained paper, and the other sheet is red marker on white paper. The geometrical shape depicted on the first sheet aligns with the linear segments on the second sheet. From F.E. Walther's exhibition "40 Sockel", Kunstraum Munich, 1982. Verso of each drawing is signed and numbered 25. Very good condition. Each: 11.75 x 8.25". "Each individual piece of 40 Pedestals has been fabricated in wood and then carefully covered with a greenish monochrome cotton fabric. They are always combined in a way that they define a different space by differing forms, different angles by differing combinations, different fields by differing extensions, reminding us of an immanent logic which has never been so radically expressed since the late 1910's and early 1920's in central and eastern Europe. It represents, as most other works by F.E. Walther, too, a decisively fabricated discourse on the social practice of two subjects: The creating and the responding."         Capricorn One

Arthur Barker, UK 1978 - London, Arthur Barker, 1978. Hardback first edition and first impression. A near fine copy with some bumping to the spine tips and a little browning to the flaps. Bernard L. Ross is a pseudonym for Ken Follet, author of The Pillars of the Earth. A seemingly scarce book, Capricorn One is a novelistation of Peter Hyams' script for the film of the same name. The book is a thriller based on a fictitious account of a Mars landing hoax; the moon landing being popular with conspiracy theorists then (and now). The book is one of Follett's scarcer titles, most bibliographies record the more common futura publication, five copies on COPAC. The book is perhaps best known in the world of book collecting due to it being advertised on the rear of Douglas Adams' Hitch Hiker's Guide. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        PHOTOGRAM

New York: Asylum Press, 1978. First Edition. Wraps. Very good. Oblong 4to. Spiral bound pictorial wraps. Very good. Mild rubbing with a few faint spots of soil. Offsetting shadow to rear cover. About one-third of the plastic teeth of the comb binding perished, as common. INSCRIBED by Laufer to Jackson Mac Low to title page: "Á Jackson -- / Susan Bee / 9/18/81." [10]pp. Bee's first artist’s book, published by her and husband Charles Bernstein's Asylum Press. A short series of photographs created by the artist without the use of a camera (usually by exposing ob- jects directly onto light-sensitive paper), PHOTOGRAM was heavily influenced by the works of Man Ray and László Moholy-Nagy, about whom Bee wrote both her a dissertation and an essay entitled "Pho- tograms" for 1984's THE L=A=N=G=U=A=G=E BOOK (edited by Bruce An- drews and Bernstein). An exceptional association and a genuinely uncommon book. The plastic comb in our experience has a tendency (as in this copy) to become brittle, and although the edition size was a respectable 300, we suspect many perished with the fragile binding. Inscribed by Bee to poet and Fluxus artist Jackson Mac Low. Bee's artist’s books are in the collections of The British Library, Yale, the Library of Congress, Princeton, Harvard, the Sackner Collection at the University of Miami, Stanford Univer- sity, Ohio State, Wesleyan, and Brown, among many other museums and special collections. OCLC locates 13 copies, though none at any of the aforementioned institutions.

Jun Morinaga - River, its shadows of shadows

Yugensha, Tokyo 1978 - "An amazing book of photographs of river waters, taken by the photographer who was assistant to W. Eugene Smith in Japan in 1961 & 1962. These images were taken by Morinaga from 1960 to 1963. He established his own studio in 1969. In his introduction, Smith writes in part: "The photographs in this book contain no actual human beings. Yet, to me, these photographs hauntingly seethe with undercurrents of the damnation factors of our times. To appreciate them the viewer must break any narrowness of traditional recognitions. It is an experience worth the effort. There are few photographs that profoundly move me, that change my life. Jun Morinaga's photographs did both. Many months after Jun was working with me, he sat on the floor and we tried to converse. He spoke that "You are the master, what can I do to improve my photographs?" And I replied with all the sincerity of my being -- "In what you do you are the master -- I only wish I could photograph as well." Text: Morinaga Jun, Smith W.Eugene, Ichikawa Miyabi, Tanigawa Koichi, Matsuoka Seigow, Morinaga Jun in English and Japanese. cm 28x30,5; 89 BW ills.; hardcover with slipcase, fine condition.
