New City, NY: Haywire Press, 1978. First edition. Unpaginated; 137 black and white photographs. Very good or better; a touch of fading to the cloth of the spine, as is common for this title; book is very slightly cocked. This copy inscribed and signed by the photographer in the year of publication; reception invitation to Friedlander's July 1978 Hudson River Museum show laid in, and addressed to the recipient of the inscription. In the literature of modern photography, this title is actually increasing in importance and influence; Friedlander's decision to bypass the usual publishing process and publish this book on his own set an example since followed by dozens, if not hundreds, of other photographers. There are a handful of contemporary photography books that can legitmately and onjectively be called important, and this is one of them. Particularly uncommon when signed in the year of publication.

        Len Deighton

ONT>1978 - London - Book Club Associates, 1978 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Leonard Cyril Deighton (born February 18, 1929, Marylebone, London) is a British historian and author of spy fiction and historical novels. Several of his novels have been adapted as films. His first four novels featured an anonymous anti-hero, named Harry Palmer in the films, and portrayed by Michael Caine. The first trilogy of his Bernard Samson novel series was made into a twelve-part television series by Granada Television in 1988. He wrote the screenplay for the 1969 film of the play Oh! What a Lovely War. His 1970 World War II historical novel Bomber about an RAF Bomber Command raid over Germany often is considered his masterpiece. Deighton's interest in spy stories may have been partially inspired by his witnessing the arrest of Anna Wolkoff, a British citizen of Russian descent who was a Nazi spy, and charged with violating the Official Secrets Act on May 20, 1940. In 1949 Deighton attended St Martin's School of Art in London, and in 1952 won a scholarship to the Royal College of Art, graduating in 1955. He then worked as an airline steward with BOAC. Before he began his writing career he worked as an illustrator in New York and, in 1960, as an art director in a London advertising agency. He has since used his drawing skills to illustrate a number of his own military history books. Deighton also has published a series of cookery books and drew a weekly illustrated cooking guide in The Observer newspaper. To exploit the success of Deighton's first four Harry Palmer novels, he wrote Len Deighton's London Dossier (1967), a guide book to Swinging Sixties London with a secret agent theme contributions from other writers are described as surveillance reports. Condition: The binding is tight and firm and both covers are firmly attached. There is very little wear to the extremities although there are one or two slight marks to the dust jacket. Internally the book is clean and bright throguhout with no obvious marks..

        La playa

Havana, Cuba:: Red Trillium Press,, 2011.. Edition of 7. 9.75 x 13" case with two items: pamphlet with essay in original Spanish and in English; prints by Daiber. Pamphlet: 12.9 x 9.5"; 8 pages; handsewn binding. Prints: 9.5 x 13"; 12 pages; double-sided accordion structure; lithography and woodcut on a Cuban atlas. Wraparound cloth-covered case with magnet closure. Steven Daiber: "In 2010 while working in the Taller Experimental de la Grafica, I overprinted the 1978 Atlas of Cuba, a volume published for the twentieth anniversary of the Cuban Revolution incorporating antique images found on lithographic stones at the taller. These found images are record of both the advertising and the tobacco industry in Cuba at the turn of the twentieth century."Pages of the accordion book are attached with hinges printed from the Mambi tobacco label celebrating the Cuban Calvary of the 1898 War for Independence (Spanish-American War) along with images from Christmas wrapping paper – snow covered trees and all. On the verso, the pages are printed with the soles of shoes found abandoned on city streets. Essay by Norberto Marrero Pírez (English translation by Yudania Monés): "It is neither the bather clinging to the sand, nor the sun radiating tons of silence. It is not even the wind enveloping everything with tits ravenous caresses. It is perhaps the night in which, gagged by the stillness of the stars, that very bather clinging to the sand drinks from a slow and dark stream. Everything is less painful; any defeat is easier to bear within silence. And since all bearable things are eternal, so is the dream of that bather clinging to the sand, his eyes examining the horizon, relishing the calmness of the waters, once again before the immensity of his dream.

Original Poster: "Fight Homelessness - Support Huntley Street Squatters"

S.i., [London 1978 - Poster produced by the Huntley Street Squatters, who were located at 1-9 Huntley Street in Bloomsbury. In addition to being the center of the London Squatters Union, the Huntley Street squat was home to more than 150 squatters and 32 children who occupied the building in 1977-78. The mansion block, owned by Camden and Islington Health Authority, had lain empty for two years, and quickly became a focus for the squatters' movement in London. Led by Piers Corbyn, the squatters set up a café, hosted festivals, and even set up an office which helped to re-house the homeless. After 17 months, 300 police officers with bulldozers converged upon the building and evicted all who lived there. A rare poster; no examples in the trade (2014), not listed in OCLC, with the only example found by us held at the International Institute of Social History in Amsterdam. A4. Original photo-lithographed poster, with image printed black on white stock and text silkscreened in red ink at lower edge; measures 45cm x 57cm (17.75" x 22.25").         Reagan tells the widow of the man who gave him his first job in 1932 of his busy life on the speech circuit and radio shows, shoring up his run for President ? He also lovingly tells of his ranch in Santa Barbara ? the following year he declared his candidacy for President

"Autograph Letter Signed ?Love Dutch,? 1 page, 7.25? x 10.5?. Letterhead: ?Ronald Reagan.? [Pacific Palisades, California], January 4 [1978]. With original envelope, slit open at top, addressed by Reagan to ?Mrs. Peter MacArthur / Lake Worth Towers / Apt. 507 / Lake Worth Fla. / 33460,? verso imprinted ?1669 San Onofre Drive / Pacific Palisades, California,? the Reagans? home from 1957-1981. Postmarked Los Angeles, January 5, 1978. Fine condition. Mrs. Peter MacArthur was Lydia Hupfer ?Hup? McArthur (1893-1995), widow of the man who had given Reagan his first job after college. Peter MacArthur was the program director at radio station WOC in Davenport, Iowa, which shared its frequency with WHO Des Moines. In 1932, MacArthur gave 21-year-old recent Eureka College grad Ronald ?Dutch? Reagan a sports announcer?s job at WOC. In 1937, sportscaster Reagan went to the Chicago Cubs spring training camp in southern California to do play-by-play for WHO Des Moines. Impressed by his confidence and good looks, an agent arranged a screen test for the 26-year-old sports announcer at Warner Bros. Reagan signed a seven-year contract and moved to California. But he never forgot Pete and Hup MacArthur whom he affectionately called ?Ma? and ?Pa? (?Maw & Paw,? ?Mom & Pop?). He sent Christmas cards and letters to them on a regular basis from 1938 until 1948 when Pete died, continuing to correspond with Hup until she died in 1995 at 101. In full, ?Dear Hup. Well the holidays are over but life gets busier. You asked what we were doing and I think most of my time is spent on airplanes. I?m out on the banquet circuit averaging about 6 to 8 speeches a month. In between banquets I?m doing a 5 day a week commentary on 300 stations & a twice a week newspaper column. It really isn?t too awful though. We have a beautiful ranch up the coast [in Santa Barbara] & manage to get their [sic] fairly often ?" some times for just an overnight or two ?" now & then for several days. We ride horses, do chores and forget about banquets. I was filled with memories a couple of months ago. The circuit took me to Iowa but not Des Moines. For a few days my name was again ?Dutch?. Nancy sends her best & we both hope you have a happy year ahead. Love Dutch.? On November 13, 1979, at the New York Hilton in New York City, Ronald Reagan announced his candidacy for President. He immediately mentioned how, as a young man, he tried to get a start in Iowa and his job as a sportscaster. He began, ?I am here tonight to announce my intention to seek the Republican nomination for President of the United States. I'm sure that each of us has seen our country from a number of viewpoints depending on where we've lived and what we've done. For me it has been as a boy growing up in several small towns in Illinois. As a young man in Iowa trying to get a start in the years of the Great Depression and later in California for most of my adult life. I've seen America from the stadium press box as a sportscaster, as an actor, officer of my labor union, soldier, officeholder and as both a Democrat and Republican ...?"

[Screenplay]: The Victim's Tuxedo: Screenplay based on the short story The Corpse Next Door by Cornell Woolrich

New York: Silver Screen Productions. 1978. Screenplay. Quarto. 77 pages, one page laid in. Bradbound in orange Studio Duplicating Service wrapper. A couple of ink changes in the text, wrappers a little soiled, a very good copy. Laid in is one page photocopied from the screenplay with an ink change, and a note to call a New York literary agent on the verso. A "neo-noir" treatment of the Woolrich story, the film was eventually made in 1980 as Union City, directed by Reichert (a.k.a. Marcus Reichert), as a vehicle for singer Debbie Harry, of the rock group Blondie. An interesting film that didn't achieve the desired effect of catapulting Harry to film stardom, though she continues to appear in films from time to time. .
