Derrière le Miroir [No. 231]: Mirò [WITH ORIGINAL LITHOGRAPHS]

Maeght, Paris 1978 - 1/150. Folio. 28, [4]pp. Uncut. Original lithographic wrappers by Mirò. Book contained in a yellow paper covered chemise which is housed in a yellow paper covered slipcase, with title label laid on front cover. This striking monograph on the art of Joan Mirò is one of 150 copies of the deluxe edition printed on Vélin d'Arches, of which this is No. 26. It is complete with its two original lithographs (wrappers and pp. 10-11), and is profusely illustrated throughout with 14 full-page b/w and color reproductions, and 51 b/w vignette size reproductions of some of the artist's work. Some minor soiling on front cover of slipcase. Text in French. Slipcase in overall good+, chemise, wrappers and interior in very good condition. 'Derrière le Miroir' accompanied each exposition at the Galerie Maeght in Paris France. The first issue appeared in 1946, The last #253 of the collection in 1982. DLM is born out of the passion of Aime and Marguerite Maeght. The first issues were intended by Aime Maeght to be spread among a large public, with original lithographs. 10,000 Copies were printed and distributed through kiosks. This failed completely and the remaining copies were sold by weight to finance the printing of issue 4, which was printed at only 1500 copies and was the catalog for the George Braque exhibition at the Galerie. Jacques Kober and Rene Char wrote the texts. This concept was continued in later issues combining great writers with great artists. In 1947, Adrien Maeght, joined the firm of his parents and assisted his father in the layout and execution. The artists created original lithographs to illustrate DLM. Mourlot did the lithographic printing and the text was printed by Union in issues 4-115. From 116-148, DLM was shot in the studios of Aime Maeght. Since 1960 an edition 'deluxe' was issued, on Arches paper, limited to 150 copies. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

        Living Arts 27 Oct. - 11 Nov. 1978

Michael Mount Waldorf School, Bryanston, Transvaal, South Africa, 1978, Soft cover, Book Condition: Good, Dust Jacket Condition: No Jacket, 1st Edition44 pages (complete). An absolutely UNIQUE book that accompanied the fourth Living Arts Biennale Exhibition in Johannesburg. The exhibition was organised to raise funds for the Waldorf School in Bryanston and aimed to represent and show works from international and local artists. This particular exhibition was exceptional in the number of black artists included. This opportunity was afforded when many white artists declined to participate on the grounds that they would not make enough money! At the height of apartheid repression and censoring of expression and creativity the mixing of black and white art was exceptionally rare. It is perhaps instructive to note that many of the black artists came from Swaziland. Many of the local artists were emerging in their own rights in their own fields, ranging from woodworking to weaving, from silvercraft to ceramics. This exhibition hosted 20 artists. This brochure is UNMATCHED AND UNIQUE in many ways. Not only does it have the SIGNATURES OF 14 OF THE ARTISTS, it also has TWO ORIGINAL WORKS OF ART and the FINGERPRINT of one the exhibitors. Weineck was the founder of the Market Galley in 1977. His gallery was critical in the promotion and development of South African art in all its forms. Its role is considered irreplaceable and particular. He was particularly pleased to stage this multi-racial event. The artists were: ceramasist HAROLD (HAL) RIEGGER (signature), sculptor LUCAS SITHOLE, woodcarver MTHUNZI NKOSI DLAMINI (signature), potter DIGBY HOETS (fingerprint in clay PLUS signature), bauernmalarei expert ELFRIEDE JOHAM-STIEGMEIER (signature), artist HARALD PH. MICHEL, potter AUSTIN HLEZA (signature), stained-glass worker STEPHANIE FASSLER-ROSS, block-printer GRACE SLOMAN (signature), weaver STANISLAWA SKOLIMOWSKA (signature), artist JASCHA, teacher and artist ROBERT REEDY (signature), metalworker GUNNAR OLOFSSON (signature), silversmith PATRICK FAKUDZE (signature), spinner and weaver MAPHOKO ELIZABETH NQAI, spinner and weaver CHRISTINE LERATO RAMPHEANE (signature), handworker LOUISE HECKL, iconographer and painter JUDITH MASON (inscription and signature), metal artist RONALD ROSENBERG (signature), stone artist KNUT ALBRECHT (signature). What also makes this brochure absolutely SINGULAR is that the inside front cover has A WATERCOLOUR PAINTING by and signed and dated by ROBERT REEDY. The title page has a PRINT BLOCK ILLUSTRATION which is unsigned but likely from GRACE SLOMON. The cover is intact and whole even if creased and marked. The pages bear evidence of handling throughout but are clear, robust and confident. A VERY SPECIAL, ONE OF A KIND brochure. fk Quantity Available: 1. Category: Africana- Art; Inventory No: aoab.

        Capricorn One

UK: Arthur Barker. London, Arthur Barker, 1978. Hardback first edition and first impression. A near fine copy with some bumping to the spine tips and a little browning to the flaps. Bernard L. Ross is a pseudonym for Ken Follet, author of The Pillars of the Earth. A seemingly scarce book, Capricorn One is a novelistation of Peter Hyams' script for the film of the same name. The book is a thriller based on a fictitious account of a Mars landing hoax; the moon landing being popular with conspiracy theorists then (and now). The book is one of Follett's scarcer titles, most bibliographies record the more common futura publication, five copies on COPAC. The book is perhaps best known in the world of book collecting due to it being advertised on the rear of Douglas Adams' Hitch Hiker's Guide. . Fine. Hardback. 1st Edition. 1978.

Haywire Press, New City, NY 1978 - Unpaginated; 137 black and white photographs. Very good or better; a touch of fading to the cloth of the spine, as is common for this title; book is very slightly cocked. This copy inscribed and signed by the photographer in the year of publication; reception invitation to Friedlander's July 1978 Hudson River Museum show laid in, and addressed to the recipient of the inscription. In the literature of modern photography, this title is actually increasing in importance and influence; Friedlander's decision to bypass the usual publishing process and publish this book on his own set an example since followed by dozens, if not hundreds, of other photographers. There are a handful of contemporary photography books that can legitmately and onjectively be called important, and this is one of them. Particularly uncommon when signed in the year of publication.
