Opera: De naturalium effectuum admirandorum causis, seu de incantationibus liber. Item de fato, libero arbitrio, praedestinatione, providentia Dei, libri V. In quibus difficilissima capita & quaestiones... explicantur, & multis raris historiis passim illustrantur... -

Small 8vo. Contemporary calf, blind stamped spine and covers with gilt angle pieces, spine with raised bands; slightly rubbed and lacking ties. A few woodcut initials and printer's device at end. [62, incl. 3 (of 4) blank leaves], 1015, (1) pp.; title slightly dust soiled, but generally a very good copy from John Evelyn's library (see Christie's, 16 March 1978, lot 1207). A scarce collective edition. It contains the second edition of the De incantationibus (pp. 1 - 325; first edn.: Basel 1556), in which Pomponazzi, the leading representative of Renaissance Aristotelianism, very daringly applied naturalistic explanations to seemingly miraculous events, including Christian miracles, and the first edition of the De fato (pp. 329 - 1015), the significant treatise on fate, free will and predestination. They are the largest works by the influential philosopher, and both were published posthumously by the physician and philosopher Gulielmo Gratarolo (1516 - 68), who settled in Basel after fleeing from Italy because of his religious beliefs. DSB XI, pp.71 - 74. Caillet, 8818. Wellcome I, 5154. Thorndike V, pp. 98 - 110. Rosenthal 3020: «Très rare et fort recherché». Pregiata edizione colletiva delle due più estese opere del noto filosofo mantovano, con il De incantationibus in seconda edizione, e il De fato in prima edizione.         THE NOVA CONVENTION. Program Booklet for events November 30th, December 1st & 2nd, 1978 at Entermedia in New York City

New York: John Giorno &c, 1978. First Edition. Very fine.. First Edition. A 10-page program booklet (including covers) of the 1978 Nova Convention. The front cover announces the event, and prints an extended 7-line quote by Burroughs on the subject of Nova; the back cover has a full-length photographic portrait of a seated William Burroughs. The event was produced by John Giorno, together with James Grauerholtz and Sylvere Lotringer, in association with Entermedia Theatre (189 Second Avenue), the Department of French & Italian of New York University, and Semiotext(e), with support from Poets & Writers, Inc., which is funded by the New York State Council on the Arts. Many prominent figures were to participate in this 3-day event, including Timothy Leary, Philip Glass, Merce Cunningham, John Cage, Patti Smith, Susan Sontag, Ann Waldman, Allen Ginsberg, Ed Sanders, Laurie Anderson, Terry Southern, Brion Gysin, Keith Richard (who ended up being detained in Canada on a drug charge and could not attend - but whose scheduled presence did in fact draw many to the event), and, of course, Burroughs himself. The convention marks an interesting juncture in Burroughs' career, when, returning to America after what amounted to a period of quasi-exile, he was conferred the status of a sort of Beat icon, which he retained until his death in 1997 (and beyond). He resumed writing fiction with a trilogy in the 1980's, took up a form of action painting, did mixed-media collaborations with musicians, readings of his own work, not to mention showing up in films (REPO MAN, DRUGSTORE COWBOY) and even advertisements, rock music, etc. This so-called NOVA CONVENTION marked in some ways the beginning of a 2-decade long embrace of Burroughs as an artist and icon - not just the shadowy marginal figure he had seemed while mostly out of the country. This copy is signed by Burroughs on the front cover, and by Philip Glass on the page [7] on which are listed the participants of Saturday night's program. The program is very scarce, but even more so signed by its centerpiece, along with an important American composer who was also there.

'Derrière le Miroir' accompanied each exposition at the Galerie Maeght in Paris France. The first issue appeared in 1946, The last #253 of the collection in 1982. DLM is born out of the passion of Aime and Marguerite Maeght. The first issues were intended by Aime Maeght to be spread among a large public, with original lithographs. 10,000 Copies were printed and distributed through kiosks. This failed completely and the remaining copies were sold by weight to finance the printing of issue 4, which was printed at only 1500 copies and was the catalog for the George Braque exhibition at the Galerie. Jacques Kober and Rene Char wrote the texts. This concept was continued in later issues combining great writers with great artists. In 1947, Adrien Maeght, joined the firm of his parents and assisted his father in the layout and execution. The artists created original lithographs to illustrate DLM. Mourlot did the lithographic printing and the text was printed by Union in issues 4-115. From 116-148, DLM was shot in the studios of Aime Maeght. Since 1960 an edition 'deluxe' was issued, on Arches paper, limited to 150 copies. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

        Living Arts 27 Oct. - 11 Nov. 1978

Michael Mount Waldorf School, Bryanston, Transvaal, South Africa, 1978, Soft cover, Book Condition: Good, Dust Jacket Condition: No Jacket, 1st Edition44 pages (complete). An absolutely UNIQUE book that accompanied the fourth Living Arts Biennale Exhibition in Johannesburg. The exhibition was organised to raise funds for the Waldorf School in Bryanston and aimed to represent and show works from international and local artists. This particular exhibition was exceptional in the number of black artists included. This opportunity was afforded when many white artists declined to participate on the grounds that they would not make enough money! At the height of apartheid repression and censoring of expression and creativity the mixing of black and white art was exceptionally rare. It is perhaps instructive to note that many of the black artists came from Swaziland. Many of the local artists were emerging in their own rights in their own fields, ranging from woodworking to weaving, from silvercraft to ceramics. This exhibition hosted 20 artists. This brochure is UNMATCHED AND UNIQUE in many ways. Not only does it have the SIGNATURES OF 14 OF THE ARTISTS, it also has TWO ORIGINAL WORKS OF ART and the FINGERPRINT of one the exhibitors. Weineck was the founder of the Market Galley in 1977. His gallery was critical in the promotion and development of South African art in all its forms. Its role is considered irreplaceable and particular. He was particularly pleased to stage this multi-racial event. The artists were: ceramasist HAROLD (HAL) RIEGGER (signature), sculptor LUCAS SITHOLE, woodcarver MTHUNZI NKOSI DLAMINI (signature), potter DIGBY HOETS (fingerprint in clay PLUS signature), bauernmalarei expert ELFRIEDE JOHAM-STIEGMEIER (signature), artist HARALD PH. MICHEL, potter AUSTIN HLEZA (signature), stained-glass worker STEPHANIE FASSLER-ROSS, block-printer GRACE SLOMAN (signature), weaver STANISLAWA SKOLIMOWSKA (signature), artist JASCHA, teacher and artist ROBERT REEDY (signature), metalworker GUNNAR OLOFSSON (signature), silversmith PATRICK FAKUDZE (signature), spinner and weaver MAPHOKO ELIZABETH NQAI, spinner and weaver CHRISTINE LERATO RAMPHEANE (signature), handworker LOUISE HECKL, iconographer and painter JUDITH MASON (inscription and signature), metal artist RONALD ROSENBERG (signature), stone artist KNUT ALBRECHT (signature). What also makes this brochure absolutely SINGULAR is that the inside front cover has A WATERCOLOUR PAINTING by and signed and dated by ROBERT REEDY. The title page has a PRINT BLOCK ILLUSTRATION which is unsigned but likely from GRACE SLOMON. The cover is intact and whole even if creased and marked. The pages bear evidence of handling throughout but are clear, robust and confident. A VERY SPECIAL, ONE OF A KIND brochure. fk Quantity Available: 1. Category: Africana- Art; Inventory No: aoab.
