        Private Elvis

Stuttgart: Fey, 1978. Some slight edgewear to the spine ends, else near fine in illustrated wrappers.. First Edition. Quarto. INSCRIBED by the author to Jean-Michel Basquiat: "for jean-michel / basquiat, love, / diego cortez / nyc dec. '84". An important association copy from one of Basquiat's earliest and most important supporters. Cortez and Basquiat met in the early seventies and Cortez immediately recognized the young artist's brilliance. His now famous Times Square show featured a generous portion of Basquiat's work, all of which sold - most importantly to Met curator Henry Geldzhaler and dealer Bruno Bischofberger. This exceptional and unsung artists' book from the late 70s is a personal photographic portrait of Elvis' army years in West Germany. Cortez himself discovered the cache of photographs, taken by Rudolf Paulini in 1959, which show Elvis posing and shaking hands with a variety of people, mostly glamorous and vampy women.

Corpus Iuris Hibernici. Ad Fidem Codicum Manuscriptorum Tomus Primus - Tomus Sextus. (6 volumes).

Dublin: University Press, 1978. Originalleinen. Einband leicht berieben. - The work is confined to the records of native Irish law that have been preserved for us in manuscripts emanating from the professional schools. In theory, then, it is concerned with secular institutions formulated by a privileged caste of jurists who, like the filid (from whom they were never completely separated), had developed as an independent branch of the original druidic monopoly of culture. But though the basic structure of their law was pre-Christian (as was that of classical Roman law), it was profoundly affected by the adoption of Christianity and the subsequent incorporation of the Church and its ministers in the tribal pattern of society. Indeed, since one of the most significant by-products of the religious revolution was the gradual replacement of an oral culture by written documents, we must attribute the first formulation of the law-tracts in writing to the spread of this new art from the monastic schools to the traditional schools where the fénechas had hitherto been preserved by \'the memory of the ancients, transmission from one ear to another, the chanting of the poets\'. The Art Institute of Chicago: 100 Masterpieces: [SIGNED by Marc Chagall, Georgia O'Keeffe, Ivan Albright, Joan Miro, and William de Kooning]

Rand McNally, 1978. Limited Numbered First Deluxe Edition. Full Leather. Fine - As New/No Jacket as Issued. A very scarce magnificent book in fine, like new condition in a fine custom clamshell case with the scarce shipping box, SIGNED by five of the world's greatest artists: Marc Chagall (1887-1985), Georgia O'Keeffe (1887-1986), Joan Miro (1893-1983), Ivan Albright (1897-1983) and W. de Kooning (1904-1997) on the occasion of the 100th birthday of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1979. The signatures are original and are each on a separate page. In addition, the great Marc Chagall signed and dated his signature, "Pour Art Inst. Chicago, Marc Chagall, 1979." First printing deluxe edition (so stated), copy # 60 of 100 total copies issued as one of four major events celebrating the Art Institute's 100th birthday, according to David C. Hilliard, Life Trustee of the Art Institute of Chicago who headed the project. According to Mr. Hilliard, the deluxe books were sold, in good part, to buy an Indian sculpture in honor of Board Chairman James Alsdorf and his wife Marilyn. Per Hilliard: "There is a good story connected with the book. We sent a young man down to visit Georgia O'Keefe and ask for her agreement to participate. Georgia could be prickly, so we chose as our envoy a young man whose father had given her the land on which she had her house and studio. And indeed he was given a warm reception and tour. When they parted, Georgia said she would sign... but then added "If you will tell me the location of my painting that I gave to the Art Institute, 'East River from the Shelton.'" We were overjoyed and asked the American Arts Department to let us see it. As Georgia knew, it had presumably been stolen years before, and a full search could not locate it. But she relented (I think she enjoyed her joke) and signed the books anyway!" Printed and bound by RR Donnelley & Sons' Lakeside Press. Bound in very fine dark red Morocco leather with beautiful gold gilt on the page edges. In beautiful very fine condition. THE BOOK: The book measures 10.5" x 14." In addition to the valuable signature pages, this large book contains beautiful color reproductions of 100 of the most magnificent art treasures that the Art Institute of Chicago holds in trust, including paintings by the artists who signed the book. Enclosed in a heavy wood clamshell box covered by matching red leather with a large gold gilt lion on the front lid. The art world has now lost all of these great artists but in this book their signatures and their paintings live on. A very special and collectable book. Weighs over 10 lb.

Photograph Andy Warhol, with Le Jardin Nightclub Dance Card Signed by Warhol Multiple Times, as well as Ephemera from Studio 54

New York, 1978. Ephemera. Very Good+. Full-color real photo postcard of Warhol (4.5x3.5 inches, showing him taking a picture, "Studio 54" in faint pencil on the verso); with dance card printed in b/w (6.75x3.75 inches), the recto with "Carnet de Bal" printed above a harlequin figure on a dance floor, the upper margin signed indistinctly "Andy" and with his phone number (475-5550), the verso with 15 printed lines with repeated Warhol signatures and markings in pencil -- the signatures with much variation and dashed off very quickly, a few are clearly signed "Andy" while others are more gestural. The card somewhat creased and stained, the pencil holder detached (but present), and the original pencil missing. Sold with a Studio 54 matchbook and drink chip (both a little worn). Purchased at auction in NYC, their consignor writes: "Having been the nightly denizen of Studio 54, I, among other 'glitterati,' caught the attention of Andy Warhol's keen eye. Having come from the Le Jardin Club, where that evening cartes de ball were given out, when Mr. W. asked to join me in a dance, I asked him to sign my dance card. Reaching in his pocket, he pulled out his eyebrow pencil, hence the brownish smear. When that broke, Mr. W used the pencil attached to the card and much to my delight and surprise, filled out every line, so representational of his custom of repetition... he also noted his phone number at the top. I was often, at various events, photographed by him and the favor was returned. The smiling photo of him taken by me is probably one of the rare smiling photos of Andy Warhol. He was always content to see me and this smiling photo is a fine memory of this most talented gentleman."

The Hermetic Journal (Complete Run of 42 issues, 1978-1988)

Edinburgh: Megalithis Research Publications, 1978-1988. First Edition. Stapled Wrappers. Near Fine. Published Quarterly. 42 issues in stapled wrappers. Most issues run 44 pages, others run 40 pages. Black and white illustrations of Alchemical designs and emblems to all volumes. This quarterly journal which was edited by Adam McLean was dedicated to the Hermetic Tradition, in particular focussing on Alchemy. The alchemical tradition has been a source of inspiration to mysticism and various forms of occultism, but sadly the wellspring of Alchemy has been much neglected in recent years. This long-running journal printed a wealth of material that had not been formerly available outside of libraries, however, the bulk of its content consists of original research material and commentary on the alchemical tradition, with additional articles and essays on Kabbalistic, Astrological and Magical ideas. McLean's editorial policy was completely independent of any particular school or esoteric path, and contributions were sought from many different sources. McLean himself was responsible for a large number of articles throughout the issues. Other contributors included Ithell Colquhoun, Kenneth Clark, Stephen Skinner, Mike MaGee (as Sri Lokanath), Joscelyn Godwin, Deirdre Green, Peter Dawkins, Mobius Rex, Joseph R. Ritman, Graham Knight, R.A. Gilbert, and many others. Issues included numerous alchemical images, plus the latest news and events, a running list of available occult magazines and journals, book reviews and more. There are over 1600 total pages in this complete set. A unique and desirable addition to any occult library. Nearly all issues are in near fine condition with a few in very good condition. Complete runs are exceptionally rare.
