Delany on Disch, Inscribed to Disch. Delany's book-length, microscopic study of Thomas M. Disch's story, "Angouleme", part of the sequence collected in 334 (1972), here inscribed by the author "With great affection to Tom - without whom this book would never … Samuel R. Delany New York 78." "Because of his intellectual audacity, the chillingly distanced mannerism of his narrative art, the austerity of the pleasures he affords, and the fine cruelty of his wit, TMD has been perhaps the most respected, least trusted, most envied and least read of all modern first-rank sf writers" (Encyclopedia of Science Fiction). With an inserted ANS from Michael Moorcock, "Thanks for contract. Will probably be mentioning Delany and might mention The American Shore - but it seems a perfect example of the difference between you. You say a great deal more in 6500 words than he can in a book. V. much enjoyed your TLS piece … Best, Mike" Important association between two prominent American science fiction authors, whose literary criticism has had a profound impact on the genre in ways as utterly divergent as their individual styles.         Lengthy Autographed Letter Signed to the Akron, Ohio Medical Society

1978. unbound. 2 pages (front and back) on personal stationery, no place, August 31, 1978. In this letter, Crohn reminisces about how he got started in medicine as an intern for famed physician Emanuel Libman, assisting with autopsies, and his eventual discovery of Crohn's Disease of the Colon, in small part: "...My active scientific approach to medicine occurred as a fluke. Dr. Libman, who was head of the laboratory as well as medicine, wanted to pick an alert intern for the Lab. That is where I learned not only pathology...but bacteriology. Later, on the wards of Mount Sinai I persuaded Dr. Berg, the prominent surgeon, to operate upon patients with symptoms in the right lower quadrant. 'NO, he said, they are all tuberculosis.' But when I said the mass felt like a tumor he relented. Soon I had fourteen such cases and went to New Orleans for the meeting of the American Gastroenterologist Society and read my paper. I was correct - a few year later I presented my findings as a form of Colitis - but the AMA insisted, over my protests, in calling this 'Crohn's Disease.' Fine condition. American gastroenterologist who was the first to discover and describe the disorder that bears his name: Crohn's Disease.

China for the West: Chinese Porcelain & other Decorative Arts for Export illustrated from the Mottahedeh Collection

Sotheby Parke Bernet Publications by Philip Wilson Publishers Limited, London, 1978 Book. Fair. Hardcover. 1st Edition. English text; Hardcover (two volumes in buckram with dust jacket in splicase); 25.6 x 35 cm; 5.243 Kg; 704 pages with 103 colour plates and 100 monochrome illustrations; Chips and signs of wear on the slipcase. Chips and tears in the dust jacket. Dust jackets taped. The interior is in good condition, apart from a mark on the bottom of the front free endpaper of volume one, probably due to the removal of an old sticker. Good readable copy.; This century has brought a growing awareness of the vast scale of Chinese export of decorative arts from the seventeenth century onwards. Until very recently however this subject had been very little studied, overshadowed as it was by the ever-widening perspectives of China's ancient past. It was nevertheless through this trade, and especially its ceramic wares, that the unique artistic creativity of the Chinese first became widely known and appreciated. This book aims to provide the most detailed and penetrating analysis yet made of the porcelains produced for Western markets during these centuries examining in its seven hundred pages and as many illustrations (one hundred of them in colour) all their many-sided attractions. The often unusual forms of the porcelain, their decorative styles and traditions, the endlessly varying subjects that they portray - and above all the continuous interchange in such themes between the Chinese manufacturers and decorators and their distant clients in the West, by means of the historic trading companies - all these are studied and interpreted more fully, and tabulated more practically for reference than ever before. The work also examines other export goods - painted enamels, carvings in ivory or soapstone, and reverse paintings on glass, to name only a few - which are represented by notable pieces. The material illustrated here is from one of the greatest collections of expert porcelain: assembled with care over nearly fifty years, it contains much that is rare or unique. Mr. and Ms. Motteheded have collected with clear-sighted purpose from the start, in a way no museum can hope to do so, so that today the wealth of rarities in their collection is matched only by its comprehensiveness, providing an ideal foundation for such a study. The authors are well equipped to write a major work on this subject, John Ayers, Keeper of the Far Eastern Section at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, is a noted authority on Chinese and Japanese ceramics whose numerous writings include four volumes on the Baur Collection (Geneva, 1968-74). David Howard's book Chinese Armorial Porcelain (London, 1974) has given an entirely new emphasis in the study of export porcelain, its design and dating, as well as the social history behind the great East India Companies. With its superb illustrations and analytical, yet highly readable text, this book offers an indispensable new source of information for the student and the collector..

        Eine Liebe in Deutschland

Bertelsmann, Güterloh - 255 Seiten, Lizenausgabe des Rowohlt Verlags, dort erschienen 1978. . Size: 11,5x19 cm [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Príliš hlucná samota [Too Loud a Solitude]. Original mimeographed filmscript.

Prague: Film Studio Barrandov 1978 - Quarto (28.2 x 20.2 cm). Original mimeographed wrappers with tan paper spine strip; mimeographed typescript to rectos only; [2], 107 pp. Signed and inscribed by Hrabal on the first page, in 1983. Very good, save for a few nicks to wrappers. With an original signed color photograph showing Hrabal drinking a beer at his favorite pub, the “Golden Tiger” in Prague. An unrecorded filmscript of this acclaimed lyrical novella by Hrabal, who is widely considered the most important Czech author of the last century. While he was strictly speaking not a dissident, some of Hrabal's works were not published until the fall of Communism in 1989, including Too Loud a Solitude, which circulated in samizdat form. The book tells the story of a dim-witted, yet dazzlingly well-read waste-paper compacter, who selectively saves and collects the books he is meant to destroy day by day. Hrabal's writing served as the basis for two films by the Czech New Wave, including Jirí Menzel's Closely Watched Trains (1966), which went on to win an Oscar in 1968. This script, authored jointly by Hrabal and Evald Schorm, was not produced for unknown reasons. Given the potentially subversive content and the novella's ambiguous lyrical tone, however, it is easy to imagine why the censors in Normalization-era Czechoslovakia would have been wary. We are not aware of any other copy of this missing piece of Hrabal's oeuvre; the script is not in KVK, OCLC and not held by the Czech National Library or any other Czech institution. "Written in an episodic manner reminiscent of Post Office and Factotum, the book begins with a typically Bukowskian complaint: "I was 50 years old and hadn't been to bed with a woman for four years." It was the kind of honesty that people had come to expect from Henry Chinaski/Charles Bukowski" (Cherkovski, p.262).         The Country Life Book of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother.

4to., original cloth with price-clipped dust wrapper. Tear to upper panel of wrapper which has a few nicks, otherwise a very good copy. First edition. Inscribed by the Queen Mother to Fleur Cowles "This book is signed for Fleur Cowles by her friend Elizabeth R. October 1979." Also with a Christmas card for 1987 signed by the Queen Mother loosely inserted. "Everybody's favourite Royal in Britain is Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, whose friendship has truly enriched my life. How does one characterize this great lady, her irresistible grace, even a raffish sort of charm? I started by reminding myself that she is her century; she was born with it in 1900, to become a beloved symbol of the British royals, known within the family as 'The Firm'. Ninety-five in August 1995, her energy astounds, her stamina amazes, and her curiosity is still as lively as ever." "Yes, I am totally devoted to the Queen Mother, and grateful for her friendship. I love my copy [as offered here] of Godfrey Talbot's book on her which she inscribed in her own distinguished hand: "To Fleur Cowles, by her friend Elizabeth R."

Autograph letter signed "Love Iannis" to the distinguished music administrator and author Renée Levine Packer

The Legend of Eer was first performed in Paris on February 11, 1978. Xenakis, a French composer of Greek parentage, "belonged to the pioneering generation of composers who revolutionized 20th-century music after World War II. With the ardour of an outsider to academic musical life, he was one of the first to replace traditional musical thinking with radical new concepts of sound composition. His musical language had a strong influence on many younger composers in and outside of Europe, but it remained singular for its uncompromising harshness and conceptual rigour." Peter Hoffmann in Grove Music Online. "Born in France, raised in New York and Mexico City, Levine Packer worked with Lukas Foss and was co-director with Morton Feldman of the renowned contemporary music group in Buffalo, New York, and a director of the Contemporary Music Festival at the California Institute of the Arts. She was Director of the Inter-Arts program at the National Endowment for the Arts, the producer of Steve Reich and Beryl Korot's multimedia opera The Cave, and a dean at the Maryland Institute College of Art." Oxford University Press online.. 1 page. Folio, ca. 295 x 209 mm. Dated February 25, [19]81. In black ink. With original autograph envelope with the Paris and California addresses of Xenakis and Packer written in black ink to upper panel and postmarked February 26, 1981. Pleased to have heard from Packer, Xenakis discusses his electronic music composition, The Legend of Eer (La legénde d'Eer). "... I would have loved to send you the tape of "Legend of Eer," but, there is a serious but, I have to be at the console. It is very difficult to put together 7 tracks because there is no final version yet. So, maybe next time I'll come and conduct the Legend and see you." Slightly worn; creased at corners and folds; several small edge tears, with no loss to text; small coffee stain to blank lower margin, not affecting text.
