Specimens of Hawaiian Kapa Assembled from Various Institutions and Private Collections

Published by the Author, Printed by Andrew Hoyem at Arion Press, Hawaii 1978 - Hawaii: Published by the Author, Printed by Andrew Hoyem at Arion Press, 1978. Fine/fine. Volume I. With 27 mounted 19th century specimens of original, handmade Hawaiian barkcloth (kapa), tipped in to printed paper folders of hand-made Fabriano paper; 35-page text booklet in brown wrappers, plus Announcement, Inventory and Handling Instructions. 33.2x25 cm. (13x9æ"), original half goat skin brown portfolio with brown ties. No. 28 of 95 copies, printed by Andrew Hoyem at the Arion Press.Very rare and limited edition of a comprehensive visual study of Hawaiian kapa cloth. The richness and variety of the specimens provides the scholar and collector of Hawaiian artifacts an unparalleled opportunity to study and compare firsthand the different styles of barkcloth manufactured by the Hawaiian people during the 19th century. The contents of the portfolio are in two parts. The introduction and historical notes are printed as a separate booklet. The kapa specimens are individually mounted in folders imprinted with identification and provenance. Also contained in the folders are plates of photographs of the full sheets of kapa prior to being cut into smaller samples. Many of the kapa specimens were collected by missionaries during the 1820s and later acquired from private collections. Given the rarity and historical value of these examples, together with the informative essay and historical notes, this portfolio makes a significant contribution to the study and preservation of bark cloth in the history of paper making. The present copy, being number 28, contains a complement of 27 Kapa. As noted in the announcement, copies 1-12 contain 33 examples, copies 13-33: 27; copies 34-50: 26; copies 51-75: 15; copies 76-80: 14; copies 81-85: 11 and copies 86-95: 10 specimens. Folding case very near fine, contents fine, prospectus (folded once with original mailer) laid in. A lovely and important production. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        PICTURE / READINGS

N.p.: Barbara Kruger, 1978. First edition. Oblong 8vo., [44] pp., illustrated from b&w photographs. Glossy blue wrappers, titled in white. Aside from a tiny nick at the lower edge of the front wrapper, and the original price sticker affixed to the blank rear wrapper, this is a fine copy. In this, Barbara Kruger's first artist's book, a fictional narrative text is presented opposite a photograph; in her later work, this same principal is distilled down to a single image which contains the added text.

        ohne Titel

1978 - Mimmo Paladino, geb.

Typed Letter Signed on eye catching "Star Trek the Motion Picture" stationery featuring the Enterprise, 4to, Hollywood, CA, Nov 24, 1978

      - Roddenberry writes to NASA engineer Jesco von Puttkamer, who was technical advisor to the first Star Trek film. Puttkamer (1933-2012) worked on deep space manned travel for NASA. Puttkamer led a long career with NASA receiving several distinguished awards. Roddenberry shares his view of film making at the end of his letter, but begins by thanking Puttkamer for his suggestions. :Thank you for your critical notes on Third Act revision? Some of your strongest criticisms have already been taken care of and a few others played much better than they appeared in the draft you saw. A number of things you commented upon were the source of some words between myself?and the actors?I doubt we will end up with anything on the screen to be ashamed of?our 'hammer and tongs' approach has given us some very interesting dramatic moments?filmmaking is a joint effort by various areas of talent and a proper synthesis of this often yields interesting results?." Above his typed name, Roddenberry signs, "Gene." A slight rust stain shows under the bow of the Enterprise and slight chipping to upper left margin, otherwise in fine condition. "Star Trek The Motion Picture" opened to mixed reviews but was nevertheless followed by more Star Trek films. The original television show gained popularity in reruns and spun off additional series.

        Going After Cacciato.

Delacorte Press, New York 1978 - First edition of the author's National Book Award-winning novel. Octavo, original cloth. Signed by Tim O'Brien on title page. Fine in a fine dust jacket. "To call Going After Cacciato a novel about war is like calling Moby-Dick a novel about whales" wrote the New York Times upon publication in 1978. In a blend of reality and fantasy, this novel tells the story of a young soldier who one day lays down his rifle and sets off on a quixotic journey from the jungles of Indochina to the streets of Paris. In its memorable evocation of men both fleeing from and meeting the demands of battle, Going After Cacciato stands as much more than just a great war novel. Ultimately it's about the forces of fear and heroism that do battle in the hearts of us all. "Simply put, the best novel written about the war. I do not know . . . any writer, journalist, or novelist who does not concede that position to O'Brien's Going After Cacciato" (Miami Herald). [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Typed Letter Signed and Life Chronology

1978. A full-page typed letter signed from Dick to Hazel Pierce, author of the Philip K. Dick Starmont Reader's Guide (1982), in which Dick directs her how to get permission to quote from his work; agrees to meet with her; confesses the project appeals to his vanity; and divulges that a speech of his to which she apparently has access was intended for a French audience, and "When I write something for France, or am interviewed by the French, I always make startling claims which I can't back up, knowing that French scholarship does not require the empirical validation of the Anglo-Saxon world's methodology." Included is the original mailing envelope: Dick has written his phone number on the back. Pierce's reply is included, in which she sent Dick a 3-page chronology of his life for correction and an additional page of 14 questions for him to answer, in a fill-in-the-blank style. Dick's handwritten corrections and responses, approximately 30, are included. For example, he fills in the last names of his wives, some significant dates, answers that the Western writer Will Cook was an influence on his writing, and notes that his work in progress is "VALIS." This chronology was included in Pierce's guide, which was published shortly after Dick's death. The letter appeared in Dick's Selected Letters. Stray pen mark on the text of Dick's letter; mailing folds and mild age-toning; otherwise the lot is fine. A notable piece of what might be called Dick-iana. Unique. No Binding. Near Fine.
