Cantilena e Scherzo for String Quartet and Harp (1977) - AUTOGRAPH MANUSCRIPT BY OSIAN ELLIS

1977. Used; Like New/Used; Like New. An interesting autograph manuscript by the harpist and composer who gave the first performance of the work, evidently copied by him from the manuscript and with his detailed markings and corrections and annotations throughout, this being almost certainly the copy used by him in preparation of the first performance.  Upright folio. 10 pp. Accomplished in black, blue and purple ink, and pencil. In fine condition. The Welsh harpist and composer Osian Ellis was former Principal harpist of the London Symphony Orchestra, first harpist of the Melos Ensemble and is especially known for his musical association with Benjamin Britten. The Cantilena and Scherzo was first performed at Alice Tully Hall (New York, Lincoln Center) on March 15, 1977 by Osian Ellis, James Buswell (violin), Ani Kavafian (violin), Walter Trampler (viola) and Leslie Parnas (cello).  The work has its roots in Ravel's Introduction and Allegro and Debussy's Danse sacrée et danse profane, but instead of separating the two movements, Menotti frames the Scherzo with the Cantilena's lyrical material, creating a ternary structure. The very choice of the word 'Cantilena' betrays Menotti's preoccupation with vocal writing, and the result is suitably song-like, full of melodic richness, sustained string writing, and a resonating harp part. A passionate climax leads into the mercurial triple-rhythm Scherzo, before the Cantilena's joyous return.

        Let's Go Playmates (Original manuscript)

N.p., N.p. 1977 - Original manuscript by Joey Ramone for an unrecorded Ramones song, "Let's Go Playmates," executed by the punk legend in holograph pencil on both the recto and verso of a legal size sheet of lined notebook paper. The lyrics appear in every orientation, a beautiful, messy gathering of ideas--some crossed through--rather than a finished song. They read, variously: (Recto) "Let's go playmates / Hey man / Cool man / Pretty cool / Hey Mommy / Take a bath / Get a job / What is it / Hey got my ludes man / Tell me my son / Flies flies / As I live and breathe / Get me / Buy me / Do for me / Hey what's in it fer me / Get with it / Tell me / What does minimalism me to you." Verso: "Does this life look interestin to you well you too can [have] all this and more / Not another fly / Im so cold / No no no." A rare example of the songwriting process of a writer for a band whose work stands not only at the top of the punk ladder, but really in a realm of its own. The manuscript is not dated, but judging from the content it could not have been written after 1978, though probably not prior to the 1977. The final lyric, "Does this life look interestin to you," puts it right on the borderline between the band's early fun-drug-crazed songs and the later, more goofily philosophical ones. In any case, one hell of a piece of paper.Lined legal size notebook paper, 8 x 12.5 inches. Fine.

THE BATTLEFIELD WHERE THE MOON SAYS I LOVE YOU

Fayetteville: Lost Roads/Mill Mountain, 1977. First edition. Paperback. Near fine. Photographic wrappers, red lettering; thick 8vo. A 542 page epic, begun by the poet when he was a teenager, by the founder along with C. D. Wright of Lost Roads. Stanford committed suicide the year following publication; this volume looks to be the most lasting of his books. Spine with one faint vertical crease, text is tight; crown and one tip lightly worn, trace foxing, small circular price sticker on back cover; still near fine, tight and bright. An uncommon book and due to its bulk, white covers and cheap paper becoming difficult to find in collectible condition. [In removable protective poly covers.]

Vali: The Witch of Positano" and "Dope: The London Drug Scene" Midnight Movies presented by New York Theatre Ensemble (Original Poster)

New York Theatre Ensemble, New York 1977 - Original poster for a Midnight Movies series hosted by the New York Theatre Ensemble's "Artists Present Artists" series in September and October 1977, featuring two films directed by Sheldon and Diane Rochlin, "Vali: The Witch of Positano" (1965) and "Dope: The London Drug Scene" (1968). Diane Rochlin later changed her professional name to Flame Schon. Two very different films from the husband and wife diectorial team. Vali Myers stars as the titular character in "Vali: The With of Positano," an anti-clerical trance film about a modern-day witch living in a cave in Italy. Vali appears in a smaller role along with young drug victim Caroline Thomson in "Dope: The London Drug Scene," a sparse verité study of London's underground drug world, with music by Geno Foreman and footage of an early (Syd Barrett-era) Pink Floyd concert at UFO.Co-director Sheldon Rochlin was active in the New York theatre world, and directed the definitive documentary about The Living Theatre, "Signal Through the Flames" (1983). The Off Broadway New York Theatre Ensemble was a perfect environment for the small, but groundbreaking, underground works, and in retrospect makes for an interesting connection between cinema and theatre in Rochlin's work.15.5 x 10 inches, black and white photocopy with silkscreened red ink applied.         Jabberwocky (Original screenplay for the 1977 film)

Cinema 5, London 1977 - Early Draft British script for the 1977 comedy directed by Terry Gilliam, based on the poem by Lewis Carroll from "Through the Looking Glass" (1871). Terry Gilliam's first solo directorial effort after co-directing "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" with Terry Jones. A comedy in the Python style--and with much of the Python cast--owing much to "The Holy Grail," but with evidence of Gilliam's unique touch, which would come into full bloom with "Time Bandits" (1981) and ultimately "Brazil" (1985).Red titled wrappers with die-cut front wrapper in the British style. Title page present, with credits for writers Alverson and Gilliam (holograph ink parenthetical markings to the left and right of their names). Noted as "A Revisedish Sort of Finalish Draft, February 10, 1976" at the bottom right. 147 leaves, roneograph. Pages Near Fine, wrappers Good to Very Good with creasing at the corners and some staining. Holograph notations and pencil sketches in an unknown hand on the verso of 8 leaves, apparently unrelated to the script or the production. Small ink scrawl on the rear panel. Internally bound with two silver brads. [Attributes: Soft Cover]
