LA: Private collection, 1977. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Tay Garnett (1894-1977) was one of the great American film directors of Hollywood's Golden Age. His nearly sixty-year-long career began when movies began, spanning silent films for Mack Sennett, Hal Roach and Pathé, moving on to major studio blockbusters like China Seas, Mrs. Parkington, A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court, and the MGM film noir masterpiece, The Postman Always Rings Twice, and finally culminating in television. The material in this archive, privately held by his daughter since his death, is on public offer for the first time. The highlight of the collection are inscribed copies of the autobiographical works of the world's leading film directors of the 20thC that Garnett was presented during his correspondence with them in composing his book DIRECTING: LEARN FROM THE MASTERS, published posthumously in 1996. The association copies include books written by (or about) and inscribed to Garnett by Francois Truffaut (2 titles), Luis Bunuel, Frank Capra, Howard Hawks, William Wyler, George Cukor, Jean Renoir, Alberto Lattuada, Rene Clair, Elia Kazan, Mervyn LeRoy, King Vidor, Raoul Walsh and screenwriter Collin Higgins (Harold & Maude). Attendant to these inscribed titles is correspondence from many of them, including Truffaut, Kazan, and Clare plus other famous directors Louis Malle, Alain Resnais, and Fred Zinnemann. The archive also includes: five working scripts with directorial notes; 148 photographs (including behind-the-scenes shots from movie sets); a book collection of three dozen titles from Garnett's household library; original cartoons by Garnett as a young commercial artist; sheet music for songs from movies directed by Garnett; and, personal records, legal papers and diaries. This is a comprehensive archive and one that reflects the creative work of this multi-talented personality, film artist and craftsman.

        Taos Pueblo

New York Graphic Society, New York 1977 - SIGNED LIMITED EDITION of perhaps the greatest pictorial representation of the American West; one of only 950 copies signed and numbered by Ansel Adams; a facsimile of the extremely rare 1930 edition of 108 copies printed for Adams. Beautifully illustrated with 12 gravure reproductions of Adams's photographs. "With Taos Pueblo we see a commitment to light and form as the essential building blocks of a picture. Every exposure was made in the most brilliant sunshine which in turn created deep shadows. Sunlight and shadow are at the same time the photographer's friend and foe. Neither films nor papers can record the two extremes of bright sun and deep shadow equally well, and an unhappy tonal compromise is often the result. Rich shadow detail is here realized simultaneously with delicate highlights in a way that proves Adams's native sense for the toughest technical problems of the medium, and how to solve them" (Weston J. Naef, The Metropolitan Museum Art). Boston: New York Graphic Society, 1977. Large folio (approximately 13 x 17.5 inches), original half-leather over linen boards, marbled endpapers; original slipcase. A FINE COPY. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

        Original Art

1977. Original art by the self-taught Blackfoot artist Melvin Tailfeathers, purchased directly from the artist by a couple who lived in Browning, Montana, on the Blackfoot Reservation, in the 1970s. Tailfeathers, in addition to being a cartoonist for the Glacier Reporter, was the illustrator of eight volumes of the 140 stories in the Indian Reading Series that was published by the Northwest Regional Educational Library, with funding from the National Institute of Education, from 1972-1983. The images offered here are, like his illustrations, of traditional Blackfoot scenes, but rendered with a seriousness that his children's book illustrations are at some pains to soften, and done without any of the cartoonist's style that helped make the book illustrations as welcoming and accessible as they are. A very detailed ink drawing of a Native American woman sitting on the ground slicing meat for strips of jerky after scraping a skin that is depicted being stretched on a drying frame outside of two tipis, and set against a mountainous background. 12" x 8", matted and framed to 17-1/2" x 14". Signed by Tailfeathers and dated 1977. Fine. No Binding. Fine.

Cantilena e Scherzo for String Quartet and Harp (1977) - AUTOGRAPH MANUSCRIPT BY OSIAN ELLIS

      - An interesting autograph manuscript by the harpist and composer who gave the first performance of the work, evidently copied by him from the manuscript and with his detailed markings and corrections and annotations throughout, this being almost certainly the copy used by him in preparation of the first performance.  Upright folio. 10 pp. Accomplished in black, blue and purple ink, and pencil. In fine condition. The Welsh harpist and composer Osian Ellis was former Principal harpist of the London Symphony Orchestra, first harpist of the Melos Ensemble and is especially known for his musical association with Benjamin Britten. The Cantilena and Scherzo was first performed at Alice Tully Hall (New York, Lincoln Center) on March 15, 1977 by Osian Ellis, James Buswell (violin), Ani Kavafian (violin), Walter Trampler (viola) and Leslie Parnas (cello).  The work has its roots in Ravel's Introduction and Allegro and Debussy's Danse sacrée et danse profane, but instead of separating the two movements, Menotti frames the Scherzo with the Cantilena's lyrical material, creating a ternary structure. The very choice of the word 'Cantilena' betrays Menotti's preoccupation with vocal writing, and the result is suitably song-like, full of melodic richness, sustained string writing, and a resonating harp part. A passionate climax leads into the mercurial triple-rhythm Scherzo, before the Cantilena's joyous return.

The Story of Jane and Joan

Mt. Horeb: Perishable Press, 1977. Wilde, John. Small quarto. (28)ff. One of only twenty-five copies. A collection of twelve hand-colored etchings by John Wilde. The twelve images in sequence tell of the relationship between Jane, Joan, and the Great Dog. The primitive innocence of the two nude figures, who seem like Adam and Eve in their uninhabited word of barren rocks and isolated trees, is underlined by the simple, see-Spot-run titles for each image. The story ends with a macabre twist and an unexpected victory. This is the first of five collaborations between Walter Hamady of the Perishable Press and Wilde, who both worked in the art department of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The etchings were printed by Steve Weitz, and bound in Bill Anthony paste paper over boards with hidden leather corners and a blue leather spine. Housed in a matching drop-back box. Typical sunning to spine of box, which shows minor wear, else a very fine copy of a scarce item.

        2 Vol Gutenberg - BEST Facsimile Ever - Limited Edition - 1977 - Bible

Measures 13" x 18" each. 2 Large Folio volumes by Idion Verlag, 1977. Adorned with 100 miniatures in color. Accompanied by a commentary volume on how the volumes were made. Sumptuous brown calf binding stamped cold on wooden boards. Copper bossing at the corners. Leather straps and brass clasp. Binding executed by an Austrian artist, Ernst Ammering. 955 copies produced. These volumes reproducing the best book ever printed is considered the best facsimile ever made! Very good condition. Some foxing. ONE OF A SMALL NUMBER OF COPIES IN THE SPECIAL DELUXE BINDING (of a total of 955 copies printed, 895 of them for sale). VERY ORNATE BLINDSTAMPED CALF OVER THICK WOODEN BOARDS by Ernst Ammering, covers panelled with central diapered field, multiple blind rules forming several compartments on covers and spines containing nearly 500 individual stamps (mostly ornamental, but a charming stamp of a lute player on either side of the central panel on each cover), large brass corner and center bosses, double raised bands, spine panels with decoration in blind similar to the covers, leather thongs with brass clasps and catches. Initials, chapter numbers, and headlines printed in red and blue, APPROXIMATELY 100 ILLUMINATED INITIALS, some with marginal extension, the openings of each of the books of the Bible with large illuminated initials (MANY OF THESE CONTAINING MINIATURES) IN SEVERAL COLORS AND GOLD AND WITH ELABORATE FANCIFUL MARGINAL BORDERS incorporating flowers, foliage, animals, etc., the whole reproduced in collotype in as many as 10 colors and gold. In mint condition. This is certainly the most beautiful facsimile ever issued of the first substantial European book to be done with movable type. Printed on a one-time batch of luxurious Van Gelder rag paper, our magnificent replica edition was reproduced from the copy of the 42-line Bible in the possession of the Prussian State Library in Berlin, one of the most richly illuminated copies in existence. Our deluxe binding is a copy of the one on the Gutenberg Bible at the Hessian State Library in Fulda. (This facsimile edition was also offered in a simpler calf binding and in a binding of calf-backed wooden boards.) Offered here with the Bible itself is a large folio companion volume that contains commentary in German dealing with various aspects of the Gutenberg Bible, including a census of copies, an essay on the illumination of various examples, and so on. Of particular importance, the companion volume also contains the "Tabula Rubricarum." These are hand-written additions, of which there are only two known examples, in which Gutenberg gives precise directions for the embellishment of the text. In the deluxe binding of the facsimile offered here (in which form it cost more than $6,000 at the time of publication 34 years ago), these two very substantial volumes represent an arresting production.
