Tertiary History of the Grand Canon with Atlas to Accompany the Monograph on the Tertiary History of the Grand Canon District (two volume set)

Santa Barbara, CA: Peregrine Smith, Inc, 1977. 1/1500. Monograph and Atlas. 264pp. Quarto [30 cm] / Folio [51 cm] Both volumes bound in a 1/2 bonded brown leather over tan canvas boards. The Monograph volume, in fine condition, is slipcased (with mild soiling), and the Atlas volume is without a slipcase. The portfolio housing the plates is a bit worn at the edges, and has a 1 3/4" crack in the front joint at the head of the spine. Atlas: Twenty-three sheets including title-page and table of contents (sheet 1), 12 color maps, 10 color views. Complete with all plates, bright, and showing only very minor edge wear. The number line on the limitation page of the monograph is blank. Overall, the set is in very good condition. This atlas contains the three stunning panoramas, 'From Point Sublime in the Kaibab', by William H. Holmes. These three panoramas offer a 270 degree view of the Grand Canyon. This atlas also contains Thomas Moran's exquisite work, 'The Transept, Kaibab Division, Grand Cañon An Amphitheater of the Second Order.' These four plates have made this work one of the most sought after Western Americana titles. In 1875, Clarence Edward Dutton (1841-1912) joined the United States Geological Survey and is known for his extensive explorations of the Rocky Mountain region. His greatest accomplishment is his Tertiary History of the Grand Canon District of 1882. It is still considered the preeminent work on the Grand Canyon to date. The atlas is beautifully illustrated with maps and views engraved by Julius Bien. Sheet XVIII of the atlas, entitled "The Transept, Kaibab Division, Grand Canyon" is based on the monumental painting of the same title by artist Thomas Moran (1837-1926). Moran, more than any other artist is most closely associated with images of the Grand Canyon. The field artist for the Dutton geological exploration was William Henry Holmes (1846-1933). Holmes was most noted for his sense of realism and accurate draftsmanship. Holmes contributed many finely executed panoramic views of the Grand Canyon to the Atlas that are quite stunning. He exhibited at the National Academy of Design, The Art Institute of Chicago and The Brooklyn Art Club among others. Holmes later held positions as Curator at the University of Chicago (1898-1906) and was a former Director of the National Academy of Design (1920-1932). Farquhar states: "One of the greatest, if not the very greatest of all Grand Canyon books...The atlas, containing the superb panoramic views by William H. Holmes and a drawing by Thomas Moran, is a rich portfolio of art as well as a collection of maps and an exposition of geology." Four page Wallace Stegner introduction at front of monograph.

        The Shining

London New English Library 1977 First Issue (with gutter code R49 at page 447) of the first UK edition of King's third novel and the first to hit the New York Times bestseller list, marking the beginning of his long reign as the heavyweight of contemporary popular fiction. Thick 8vo: [8],447,[1]pp. Publisher's black paper-covered boards, spine stamped gilt; illustrated dust jacked, priced £4.95. About Fine (heel of spine bumped, pages tanned on margins, as usual) and probably unread, in Fine jacket. A beautiful copy and yet another example of the value to be found in the graphically superior designs of most UK editions of American authors's works. The U.S. (Doubleday) first edition had a print run of 25,000 copies. The UK edition's was much lower, judging from the print runs of Carrie and The Stand, which were each about 1000 copies. Jones & Newman (eds), Horror: 100 Best Books, 77. Pringle, Modern Fantasy: The Hundred Best Novels, 64."The Shining, still widely considered King's finest book, is a rather restrained, controlled novel which owes more to King's admiration of the type of allusive, psychological haunting found in Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House than the gore of the 1950s horror comics. Inspired by King's stay in a Colorado hotel that was closing for the season, the novel details the gradual breakdown of Jack Torrance, a frustrated writer and increasingly unstable family man who agrees to act as caretaker during the long winter. Accompanied by his long-suffering wife, Wendy, and young son, Danny (yet another of King's psychically gifted youngsters), recovering alcoholic Torrance soon falls under the destructive influence of not only his own demons but also those that inhabit the corridors of the Overlook Hotel. At its simplest, most affecting level the book is a story of marital and familial breakdown, of a man whose love for his wife and child is gradually eaten away by resentment and self-loathing . . ." (Literary Encyclopedia) Peter Straub (Jones & Newman) calls the novel a "masterwork, a bold product of an original vision, a novel of astonishing passion, urgency, tenderness, understanding, and invention. . . . In it's uniting of an almost bruising literary power, a deep sensitivity to individual experience, and its operatic conventions, it is a very significant work of art." N. B.         Hagarism: The Making of the Islamic World

West Nyack, New York, U.S.A.: Cambridge Univ Pr, 1977. This is an ex-library book, but with fewer than the usual markings to the book and none to the dust jacket. Otherwise, the book is near very good with shelfwear and writing on the last blank page . The mylar protected dust jacket is very good with rubbing, and edgewear. A nice example of a very scarce book . First Printing. Hard Cover. Good/Very Good. Ex-Library.
