The Chester Play of the Deluge.

London: Clover Hill Editions, 1977. Quarto. 20pp. One of only seven copies printed on vellum by Will Carter at the Rampant Lions Press, and with a separate portfolio containing three sets of the wood engravings on vellum, handmade paper, and Japon. Illustrated by David Jones, this is considered by many to be the artist's most important work. At the early stages of his career Jones was much influenced by the work of Eric Gill, with whom he shared a close association. According to Hodnett in Five Centuries of Book Illustration, it was with The Chester Play of the Deluge, first published by the Golden Cockerel Press in 1927, that Jones reached his full artistic maturity. Its ten wood engravings "are as original a series of illustrations as any in an English book," Hodnett observes. "Jones's innovation was to integrate the elements of each design in a complex overall pattern by means of interlocking bands of solid black or white." In respect to the Golden Cockerel edition, however, Jones felt that the some of the delicacy of his wood engravings had been lost, as the paper was not properly dampened by the Press as they hurried to meet a deadline. According to the Publisher's Note by Douglas Cleverdon, Jones acquired the ten blocks in order to ensure that they would not be reprinted without his approval. In 1977, Jones gave Clover Hill Editions his blessing to reprint the book using his original blocks, in the manner that he originally intended. In this present, ultra-deluxe edition, printed on vellum, the illustrations reveal their full complexity. Bound in brick red morocco by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, with the portfolio in morocco-backed marbled paper. The book and portfolio are housed together in a slipcase. Extremely fine. With the original prospectus, which includes a bifolium printed vellum sheet and the illustration of Noah's Ark.

Bibliography of the Grabhorn Press 1915-1940; Bibliography of the Grabhorn Press 1940-1956; Bibliography of the Grabhorn Press 1957-1966 & Grabhorn-Hoyem 1966-1973.

San Francisco: Grabhorn Press, 1940; 1957; 1977. Three folio volumes. xx, 195; xxxii, 120; xxx, 121pp. The three volumes are limited to 210, 225, and 225 copies respectively. Volume I, Bibliography of the Grabhorn Press 1915-1940, has a preface by the compilers, several short essays on the history of the Press, and reprints Frederic Goudy's essay "The Craft of the Printer." The second volume, Bibliography of the Grabhorn Press 1940-1956, has a preface by Dorothy and David Magee and an introduction by Elmer Adler. Volume III, Bibliography of the Grabhorn Press 1957-1966 & Grabhorn-Hoyem 1966-1973, has a preface by Robert D. Harlan and an introduction by Sherwood Grover. Each of the volumes presents a complete and detailed bibliography of all of the non-ephemeral productions of the presses, as well as a checklist of the same. Few private presses have produced their own bibliography, and only the Ashendene Press Bibliography is in the same class as these three impressive volumes. Volume I contains a letter from a previous owner to Robert Grabhorn requesting that the volume, bought as sheets, be bound uniform with Volume II. This was completed by Jane Grabhorn, and Volumes I and II are bound in patterned paper with red morocco spines. Both have plain wrappers and are housed in a black cloth slipcase. Volume III is in patterned cloth with a green morocco spine, and contains a prospectus laid in. Dust wrappers on Volumes I and II tanned and chipped, with some loss at edges; Volume III slightly faded at spine. Otherwise a fine set. (Chalmers 86).

The Butterfly's Ball and the Grasshopper's Feast.

(Watertown, MA): Anne and David Bromer, 1977. (24)pp. The text is printed on Japanese paper with ornamentation in green. Wood engravings by Sarah Chamberlain, as her first miniature book commission. This is the first miniature book published by the Bromers. Midori Kunikata-Cockram captures the whimsical nature of the text, which was the first English poem for children intended for sheer amusement. The front and rear boards of her designer binding are covered with parchment, on which the artist has hand-drawn the insects and small animals attending the feast amongst a pattern of vines and flowers in crimson ink. Delicate onlays of black morocco create the silhouette of a vine climbing up the book's burgundy morocco spine. Inside, endpapers printed with oak leaves and cut-out leaves with hand-drawn shading in pastel reference the oak tree in the poem, beneath which the revels were held. Housed in a suede-lined box, the exterior of which is covered with paper hand-tooled in a foliate pattern and gilt-titled to the morocco spine. A parchment tab painted with a butterfly on one side and a grasshopper on the reverse, helps to lift the book out of the box. With the binder's blind-stamped mark to the penultimate endleaf and signed by Chamberlain to the colophon. Extremely fine. (2 1/2 by 2 1/8; 63x53mm).

        Taos Pueblo

New York: New York Graphic Society, 1977. SIGNED LIMITED EDITION of perhaps the greatest pictorial representation of the American West; one of only 950 copies signed and numbered by Ansel Adams; a facsimile of the extremely rare 1930 edition of 108 copies printed for Adams. Beautifully illustrated with 12 gravure reproductions of Adams's photographs. "With Taos Pueblo we see a commitment to light and form as the essential building blocks of a picture. Every exposure was made in the most brilliant sunshine which in turn created deep shadows. Sunlight and shadow are at the same time the photographer's friend and foe. Neither films nor papers can record the two extremes of bright sun and deep shadow equally well, and an unhappy tonal compromise is often the result. Rich shadow detail is here realized simultaneously with delicate highlights in a way that proves Adams's native sense for the toughest technical problems of the medium, and how to solve them" (Weston J. Naef, The Metropolitan Museum Art).Boston: New York Graphic Society, 1977. Large folio (approximately 13 x 17.5 inches), original half-leather over linen boards, marbled endpapers; original slipcase.         A Time of Gifts, Between the Woods and the Water, The Broken Road.

John Murray,, 1977. 3 volumes (complete set). London, John Murray, 1977. Octavo. Pagination: (Time of Gifts) [frontispiece] [8], 291, [1] pages / (Woods and Water) [10], 248 pages / (Broken Road) xxii, 362 pages. Original Hardcover with illustrated dustjackets. The three volumes in first edition of Patrick Leigh Fermor's account of his epic walk to Constantinople, now seen as one of the great works of travel literature in the language. All three books are first editions in their jackets, the first volume near fine in blue publisher's boards, without ownership inscriptions to the book. The jacket is very good with a bright front panel showing John Craxton's evocative central European design, some fading to the orange background on the spine and foxing to the rear blue panel. Between the Woods and the Water is near fine in a very good jacket which has been price clipped. The Broken Road is fine in a fine jacket with a small 2013 ownership signature on the first endpaper. It was Patrick Leigh Fermor's good fortune to set out on his great adventure in the early nineteen thirties before Nazism and the Second World War changed the Europe for ever, but to wait forty years before writing the first two volumes of his luminous narrative. His account of German beer cellars, of Prague under snow and love in Vienna, all occurring while the shadow of Nazism looms, bears comparison with Chatwin, Robert Byron and the best twentieth century writers in any genre. Sir Patrick Michael Leigh Fermor, DSO, OBE (11 February 1915 ? 10 June 2011), also known as Paddy Fermor, was a British author, scholar and soldier who played a prominent role behind the lines in the Cretan resistance during the Second World War. He was widely regarded as Britain's greatest living travel writer during his lifetime, based on books such as A Time of Gifts (1977). A BBC journalist once described him as "a cross between Indiana Jones, James Bond and Graham Greene." The Patrick Leigh Fermor Society was formed in 2014.nAt the age of 18, Leigh Fermor decided to walk the length of Europe, from the Hook of Holland to Constantinople. He set off on 8 December 1933, less than a year after Hitler had come to power in Germany, with a few clothes, several letters of introduction, the Oxford Book of English Verse and a volume of Horace's Odes. He slept in barns and shepherds' huts, but also was invited by landed gentry and aristocracy into the country houses of Central Europe. He experienced hospitality in many monasteries along the way. Two of his later travel books, A Time of Gifts (1977) and Between the Woods and the Water (1986), were about this journey. A book on the final part of his journey was unfinished at the time of Leigh Fermor's death, but was published as The Broken Road: Travels from Bulgaria to Mount Athos in September 2013 by John Murray. The book draws on Leigh Fermor's diary at the time and on an early draft he wrote in the 1960s.nnLeigh Fermor arrived in Constantinople on 1 January 1935, then continued to travel around Greece. In March, he was involved in the campaign of royalist forces in Macedonia against an attempted Republican revolt. In Athens, he met Balasha Cantacuzène (Balasa Cantacuzino), a Romanian Phanariote noblewoman, with whom he fell in love. They shared an old watermill outside the city looking out towards Poros, where she painted and he wrote. They moved on to Baleni, Gala?i, the Cantacuzène house in Moldavia, where they were living at the outbreak of the Second World War. (Wikipedia)

In the story, the turtles Betty and Brickred defeat the deadly monster on Turtle Mountain, which is "said to be 6 feet tall and to shoot poisonrings that make you die for 66 years." After tossing the body in the lake, the turtles and their offspring celebrate with a picnic and fireworks. Corrections to the text have been marked in red pen, adding punctuation and fixing spelling. A delightful work that captures the joy in youthful storytelling. This copy is inscribed in pencil to papermaker Douglas Howell: "The inspiration required to get this project together came from my meeting with you, Douglas Howell. Thank you, Michael Dorsa." Howell was instrumental in the revival of hand papermaking. His paper, which came in a wide variety of styles, weights, colors, and materials, were used by artists and printmakers and displayed in galleries throughout the world. Howell also taught workshops in his studio, and many of his students went on to establish papermaking departments in art schools and universities in the United States and Canada. Very fine, in full brown leather with an illustration of the monster blind-tooled to the upper cover.

        GAUDETE

London: Faber and Faber. 1977 - First edition, first printing. Inscribed presentation copy from the author to his close friend, poet and translator János Csokits. Original black cloth with titles in gilt and red to the spine, in dustwrapper. A lovely fine copy, the binding clean and square, the contents without previous owner’s inscriptions or stamps. Complete with the near fine lightly rubbed and nicked original dustwrapper. Not price-clipped (£4.50 to the front flap). Inscribed by the author in black ink on the front free endpaper "For my dear friend Janos / with much love / from Ted / 26th August 1977". An excellent association copy. Hungarian poet and translator János Csokits became acquainted with the author after meeting Olwyn Hughes, Ted's sister in Paris. He is perhaps best known as Ted Hughes's co-translator of another 20th-century Hungarian poet, János Pilinszky. In 1992 Csokits published Pilinszky Nyugaton (Pilinszky in the West), collecting all of Hughes's letters to him. The entire Csokits-Hughes correspondence is now held by Emory University, Atlanta.         Song of Solomon

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1977 First edition. Signed by Morrison on the title page. Personal copy of William Styron, with his embossed ownership stamp to a front flyleaf. Publisher's black cloth, lettered in blind and gilt; in the original yellow pictorial dust jacket designed by R. D. Scudellari, lettered in black and maroon with black wing decorations. Fine book; unclipped dust jacket, with just some light sunning to the spine, else fine. A superb copy. This copy of Song of Solomon comes from the library of author William Styron and bears his embossed ownership stamp on a front flyleaf. Both close friends of fellow author James Baldwin, both Styron and Morrison wrote about African American history, identity and culture during the Jim Crow Era in the American South. Song of Solomon is Morrison's third novel and the first novel by an African-American author to be a Book-of-the-Month Club main selection since Richard Wright's Native Son (1940). Specifically, it creates a "magical world out of four generations of black life in America" through the story of Macon "Milkman Dead, Jr. An extremely powerful novel, Song of Solomon soars, as Reynolds Price lauds in his 1977 New York Times review, "on the wide slow wings of human sympathy, well-informed wit and the rare plain power to speak wisdom to other human beings? Few Americans know, and can say, more than [Morrison] has in this wise and spacious novel.". Signed by Author. 1st Edition.. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Dust Jacket Included.
