Le Chien Guingan et le Chat Calicot.

Mill Valley, CA: Sunflower Press, 1977. (16)ff. From an edition of 250 copies illustrated in color by Marcie Collin and printed by Carol Cunningham, this copy is in a designer binding by Sonya Sheats. Evoking the fierce battle between the Gingham Dog and the Calico Cat, the artist envisioned "a tangle of lines tracing the tossing and tumbling" of the small beasts in the middle of the night," drawing sharp, angular, intersecting lines in red, blue, and gray enamel across the covers to map their struggle. This motion is set against a background of subtly textured and shaded natural dark parchment, which Sheats notes "has a soft, round, and whole presence." The binding structure is an homage to the influential German bookbinder Otto Dorfner, employing an open-joint style that he innovated. The spine is covered separately from the boards, which are then connected with four bands of pale blue water snakeskin. The ends of the bands are hidden under half-moon onlays of the same natural parchment. For contrast, the doublures are thin, bright white parchment. The book slides into a parchment-covered box etched with the title on one side in a modern, san-serif font. Elements of the design also hint at the influence of Brother Edgard Claes, her most important bookbinding mentor, including the sliding polycarbonate closure to the box which is painted with lustrous beige automotive paint. Sheats describes her work as part of the tradition of French fine bookbinding, mixing traditional techniques with modern materials. Extremely fine, protected in a blue microsuede pouch. (2 1/4 by 2 1/2; 57x64mm).

        The Shining

New English Library 1977 - A UK First Edition, First Printing (New English Library 1977 with the code 'R49' present on page 447). The print run for the US First Edition was 25,000 and, given the low print runs of the UK editions of 'Carrie' and 'The Stand', which consisted of just 500 and 1000 copies respectively, the UK First Edition of 'The Shining' is likely to be considerably rarer than that of the US. Small bump to top of spine; edges toned and lightly foxed; a little off-setting to front endpaper and front board slightly bowed at the bottom. Original and unclipped dust jacket has some rubbing, chipping and wear to the top with a stain to the inside, and is now protected in a high-quality archival cover. A good copy of a contemporary classic. The book will be wrapped with care and shipped securely to ensure safe delivery. Please note: In order for the book to be shipped with full insurance, there will be an extra charge for international postage. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

The Story of Jane and Joan

Perishable Press, Mt. Horeb 1977 - Small quarto. (28)ff. One of only twenty-five copies. A collection of twelve hand-colored etchings by John Wilde. The twelve images in sequence tell of the relationship between Jane, Joan, and the Great Dog. The primitive innocence of the two nude figures, who seem like Adam and Eve in their uninhabited world of barren rocks and isolated trees, is underlined by the simple, see-Spot-run-like titles for each image. The story ends with a macabre twist and an unexpected victory. This is the first of five collaborations between Walter Hamady of the Perishable Press and Wilde, both of whom worked in the art department of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The etchings were printed by Steve Weitz and bound in Bill Anthony paste-paper over boards with hidden leather corners and a blue leather spine. Housed in a matching drop-back box. Typical sunning to spine of box, which shows minor wear, else a fine copy of a scarce item. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        I travestiti

Inserto di 16 pagine di carta rosa sottile con riproduzione di foto e lettere dattiloscritte che i protagonisti del libro inviarono alla fotografa. Testi in italiano e inglese tradotti da Pietro Ferrari. 4to. pp. 164. Dedica e firma autografe della Carmi a pennarello, datata Milano 24-6-1977 (Inscription signed by the Artist, dated Milan 24-6-1977). Ottimo (Fine). . Prima edizione (First Edition). .

Oblong 8vo., original buckram with decorated paper label on upper board, preserved in original blind-stamped red cloth fall-down-back box. Illustrated with lithographs by Glynn Boyd Harte. A fine copy. First edition, limited edition of 220 copies signed by Betjeman and Harte. These verses are taken from the commentary written by Betjeman for Edward Mirzoeff's BBC documentary Metro-land first shown in 1973. With loosely inserted an autograph letter signed by Glynn Boyd Harte to Bevis Hillier (dated 4th Jan 1982). A pleasant chatty letter discussing an article Hillier had written about Harte in the TLS. Harte goes on to discuss John Betjeman, "The Laureate was last sighted at the Hayward Gallery (enough to make anyone ill) v. grey and being pushed by a certain Lady around the Lutyen's exhibition. One day I must play you a recording of a cantata I wrote in the style of J Parker, in which the Laureate had to say at a certain moment, four of his own words. Extensively rehearsed in Radnor Walk, when it came to the performance (at the Art Workers' Guild naturally) the Old Thing was so drunk that he couldn't recall a thing."
