        I travestiti

4to. pp. 164. Dedica e firma autografe della Carmi a pennarello, datata Milano 24-6-1977 (Inscription signed by the Artist, dated Milan 24-6-1977). Ottimo (Fine). . Prima edizione (First Edition). .

Oblong 8vo., original buckram with decorated paper label on upper board, preserved in original blind-stamped red cloth fall-down-back box. Illustrated with lithographs by Glynn Boyd Harte. A fine copy. First edition, limited edition of 220 copies signed by Betjeman and Harte. These verses are taken from the commentary written by Betjeman for Edward Mirzoeff's BBC documentary Metro-land first shown in 1973. With loosely inserted an autograph letter signed by Glynn Boyd Harte to Bevis Hillier (dated 4th Jan 1982). A pleasant chatty letter discussing an article Hillier had written about Harte in the TLS. Harte goes on to discuss John Betjeman, "The Laureate was last sighted at the Hayward Gallery (enough to make anyone ill) v. grey and being pushed by a certain Lady around the Lutyen's exhibition. One day I must play you a recording of a cantata I wrote in the style of J Parker, in which the Laureate had to say at a certain moment, four of his own words. Extensively rehearsed in Radnor Walk, when it came to the performance (at the Art Workers' Guild naturally) the Old Thing was so drunk that he couldn't recall a thing."

Collection of 15 Documentary Photographs of C.B.T.V., The Big Wheel, B-Car, and Beam Drop

Los Angeles and New York: Chris Burden (studio) and Ron Feldman Fine Art, Inc., 1977-1983. Photographs all lightly curled, else near fine (excepting the second "Big Wheel" photograph which shows a single strip of yellowing), the rice paper envelopes brittle and toned, near fine, all housed in a lightly worn manila file folder with name Chris Burden written in green marker to front.. Collection of 15 black and white photographs, each 8 X 10 inches, organized into four rice paper envelopes, some with sheets of typed text also laid in; each packet documents a separate artwork by Chris Burden. Most of the photographs are stamped to verso with Chris Burden's Los Angeles studio addresses, two with an older Pico Blvd. address crossed out and re-stamped with an updated 4th Avenue address; most photographs are also noted with artist's name and artwork title in Burden's hand to verso; with three images from Beam Drop SIGNED by Burden. The artworks documented are C.B.T.V., 1977 and 1980; The Big Wheel, 1979, 1980, and 1982; the B-Car, 1975 and 1980; and Beam Drop, 1983. The first packet contains four photographs and two typed sheets, and is apparently a press release from "C.B.T.V. (Chris Burden television)", a project exhibited at Documenta 6, June 1977 in Kassel, as well as at Ron Feldman Fine Arts, November 1977, New York. The first photograph, showing the C.B.T.V. device, is stamped on the verso five times with Chris Burden's name and Los Angeles studio address, both at Pico Blvd. and 4th Avenue; the Pico Blvd. address is crossed out with red pencil. Additionally copyright 1977 is handwritten above one of the stamps; the print is also stamp-numbered 000677; a typed description of the exhibition at Documenta and Ron Feldman Fine Arts (identical to the folded typed description that accompanies the packet) was cellophane taped to verso, but now disattached from brittle tape. The second photograph shows a person looking at the device, back turned to camera. The verso is titled in pen, "'Receiver' or C.B.T.V." and stamped three times with Chris Burden's name and both LA studio addresses, with the Pico Blvd. studio address crossed out in red; additionally copyright 1977 is noted in pen next to one of the stamps; the print is also stamp numbered 000678. The third print shows a woman wearing a C.B.T.V. t-shirt standing in front of the device and is stamped once to verso with Chris Burden's name and LA studio address. The fourth print shows Chris Burden standing in front of the device; the verso is notated in pen, "Demonstrating / C.B.T.V. / At Whitney Museum of Art / Spring 1980" and is stamped twice, once with Chris Burden's name and LA studio address, and also with photography credits to Francene Keery. The second packet contains four photographs, one with typed description affixed to rear, and documents "The Big Wheel", a project exhibited four times, dated 1979, 1980, 1980, and 1982. The first photograph shows the artwork in a gallery and is pencil notated "'The Big Wheel' 1979" to verso and marked with Chris Burden's LA studio stamp. The second photograph shows the same image as the first photograph, and is pencil notated "'The Big Wheel' 1979" to verso, also Chris Burden's LA studio stamp and affixed typed description, listing exhibitions at Rosamund Felsen Gallery, Los Angeles, 1979; Ron Feldman Fine Arts, New York, 1980; San Diego Museum of Art, San Diego, 1980; and Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, 1982. The third photograph shows the artwork in a different gallery setting and is pen notated to verso, "'The Big Wheel' / 1979 / At Walker Art Center / Spring 1982" and also has the LA studio stamp. The fourth photograph shows the artwork in same gallery as third image, but with Chris Burden seated on motorcycle and viewers looking on from behind a cordon; the photograph is similarly pen notated, but without the studio stamp. The third packet contains two photographs, both showing Chris Burden seated in the B-Car, apparently in New York City. Both photographs are marked with Chris Burden's LA studio stamp as well as an affixed sticker from Ronald Feldman Fine Arts Inc, noting the piece as "1980 demonstration picture / of the B-Car, 1975". Additionally, both photographs are stamped by photographer Eeva-Inkeri with pencil notation identifying the photos as negative numbers #1 CB and CB #2. The fourth packet contains three photographs and two typed sheets documenting the "Beam Drop" proposal. The first typed sheet describes the project, the second lists materials needed, both are type-dated "Chris Burdon 2/17/83" to foot of text. The three photographs all show an artwork (or model for an artwork) and is marked to verso with Chris Burdon's LA studio stamp and also SIGNED in pen, "Chris Burden / 'Beam Drop Model' / Spring 1983". The three photographs are additionally pencil notated to verso, "33A", "30A", and "6" respectively.

The Chester Play of the Deluge.

London: Clover Hill Editions, 1977. Quarto. 20pp. One of only seven copies printed on vellum by Will Carter at the Rampant Lions Press, and with a separate portfolio containing three sets of the wood engravings on vellum, handmade paper, and Japon. Illustrated by David Jones, this is considered by many to be the artist's most important work. At the early stages of his career Jones was much influenced by the work of Eric Gill, with whom he shared a close association. According to Hodnett in Five Centuries of Book Illustration, it was with The Chester Play of the Deluge, first published by the Golden Cockerel Press in 1927, that Jones reached his full artistic maturity. Its ten wood engravings "are as original a series of illustrations as any in an English book," Hodnett observes. "Jones's innovation was to integrate the elements of each design in a complex overall pattern by means of interlocking bands of solid black or white." In respect to the Golden Cockerel edition, however, Jones felt that the some of the delicacy of his wood engravings had been lost, as the paper was not properly dampened by the Press as they hurried to meet a deadline. According to the Publisher's Note by Douglas Cleverdon, Jones acquired the ten blocks in order to ensure that they would not be reprinted without his approval. In 1977, Jones gave Clover Hill Editions his blessing to reprint the book using his original blocks, in the manner that he originally intended. In this present, ultra-deluxe edition, printed on vellum, the illustrations reveal their full complexity. Bound in brick red morocco by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, with the portfolio in morocco-backed marbled paper. The book and portfolio are housed together in a slipcase. Extremely fine. With the original prospectus, which includes a bifolium printed vellum sheet and the illustration of Noah's Ark.

The second volume, Bibliography of the Grabhorn Press 1940-1956, has a preface by Dorothy and David Magee and an introduction by Elmer Adler. Volume III, Bibliography of the Grabhorn Press 1957-1966 & Grabhorn-Hoyem 1966-1973, has a preface by Robert D. Harlan and an introduction by Sherwood Grover. Volume I contains a letter from a previous owner to Robert Grabhorn requesting that the volume, bought as sheets, be bound uniform with Volume II. This was completed by Jane Grabhorn, and Volumes I and II are bound in patterned paper with red morocco spines. Both have plain wrappers and are housed in a black cloth slipcase. Volume III is in patterned cloth with a green morocco spine, and contains a prospectus laid in. Dust wrappers on Volumes I and II tanned and chipped, with some loss at edges; Volume III slightly faded at spine. Otherwise a fine set. (Chalmers 86).

The Butterfly's Ball and the Grasshopper's Feast.

(Watertown, MA): Anne and David Bromer, 1977. (24)pp. The text is printed on Japanese paper with ornamentation in green. Wood engravings by Sarah Chamberlain, as her first miniature book commission. This is the first miniature book published by the Bromers. Midori Kunikata-Cockram captures the whimsical nature of the text, which was the first English poem for children intended for sheer amusement. The front and rear boards of her designer binding are covered with parchment, on which the artist has hand-drawn the insects and small animals attending the feast amongst a pattern of vines and flowers in crimson ink. Delicate onlays of black morocco create the silhouette of a vine climbing up the book's burgundy morocco spine. Inside, endpapers printed with oak leaves and cut-out leaves with hand-drawn shading in pastel reference the oak tree in the poem, beneath which the revels were held. Housed in a suede-lined box, the exterior of which is covered with paper hand-tooled in a foliate pattern and gilt-titled to the morocco spine.         Taos Pueblo

New York: New York Graphic Society, 1977. SIGNED LIMITED EDITION of perhaps the greatest pictorial representation of the American West; one of only 950 copies signed and numbered by Ansel Adams; a facsimile of the extremely rare 1930 edition of 108 copies printed for Adams. Beautifully illustrated with 12 gravure reproductions of Adams's photographs. "With Taos Pueblo we see a commitment to light and form as the essential building blocks of a picture. Every exposure was made in the most brilliant sunshine which in turn created deep shadows. Sunlight and shadow are at the same time the photographer's friend and foe. Neither films nor papers can record the two extremes of bright sun and deep shadow equally well, and an unhappy tonal compromise is often the result. Rich shadow detail is here realized simultaneously with delicate highlights in a way that proves Adams's native sense for the toughest technical problems of the medium, and how to solve them" (Weston J. Naef, The Metropolitan Museum Art).Boston: New York Graphic Society, 1977. Large folio (approximately 13 x 17.5 inches), original half-leather over linen boards, marbled endpapers; original slipcase. A FINE COPY. Fine.

A Time of Gifts, Between the Woods and the Water, The Broken Road.

John Murray,, 1977. 3 volumes (complete set). London, John Murray, 1977. Octavo. Pagination: (Time of Gifts) [frontispiece] [8], 291, [1] pages / (Woods and Water) [10], 248 pages / (Broken Road) xxii, 362 pages. Original Hardcover with illustrated dustjackets. The three volumes in first edition of Patrick Leigh Fermor's account of his epic walk to Constantinople, now seen as one of the great works of travel literature in the language. All three books are first editions in their jackets, the first volume near fine in blue publisher's boards, without ownership inscriptions to the book. The jacket is very good with a bright front panel showing John Craxton's evocative central European design, some fading to the orange background on the spine and foxing to the rear blue panel. Between the Woods and the Water is near fine in a very good jacket which has been price clipped. The Broken Road is fine in a fine jacket with a small 2013 ownership signature on the first endpaper. It was Patrick Leigh Fermor's good fortune to set out on his great adventure in the early nineteen thirties before Nazism and the Second World War changed the Europe for ever, but to wait forty years before writing the first two volumes of his luminous narrative. His account of German beer cellars, of Prague under snow and love in Vienna, all occurring while the shadow of Nazism looms, bears comparison with Chatwin, Robert Byron and the best twentieth century writers in any genre. Sir Patrick Michael Leigh Fermor, DSO, OBE (11 February 1915 ? 10 June 2011), also known as Paddy Fermor, was a British author, scholar and soldier who played a prominent role behind the lines in the Cretan resistance during the Second World War. He was widely regarded as Britain's greatest living travel writer during his lifetime, based on books such as A Time of Gifts (1977). A BBC journalist once described him as "a cross between Indiana Jones, James Bond and Graham Greene." The Patrick Leigh Fermor Society was formed in 2014.nAt the age of 18, Leigh Fermor decided to walk the length of Europe, from the Hook of Holland to Constantinople. He set off on 8 December 1933, less than a year after Hitler had come to power in Germany, with a few clothes, several letters of introduction, the Oxford Book of English Verse and a volume of Horace's Odes. He slept in barns and shepherds' huts, but also was invited by landed gentry and aristocracy into the country houses of Central Europe. He experienced hospitality in many monasteries along the way. Two of his later travel books, A Time of Gifts (1977) and Between the Woods and the Water (1986), were about this journey. A book on the final part of his journey was unfinished at the time of Leigh Fermor's death, but was published as The Broken Road: Travels from Bulgaria to Mount Athos in September 2013 by John Murray. The book draws on Leigh Fermor's diary at the time and on an early draft he wrote in the 1960s.nnLeigh Fermor arrived in Constantinople on 1 January 1935, then continued to travel around Greece. In March, he was involved in the campaign of royalist forces in Macedonia against an attempted Republican revolt. In Athens, he met Balasha Cantacuzène (Balasa Cantacuzino), a Romanian Phanariote noblewoman, with whom he fell in love. They shared an old watermill outside the city looking out towards Poros, where she painted and he wrote. They moved on to Baleni, Gala?i, the Cantacuzène house in Moldavia, where they were living at the outbreak of the Second World War. (Wikipedia)
