In Pietrosanto's view one became a "hero" from a favourable combination of ancestry and virtue. The book is divided into nine thematic "libri". The other chapters continue with mottos and emblems: their names and meanings, their value and nature, their content, how they are constructed or drawn and their symbolism. The engraved title-page was drawn for the book by Peter Paul Rubens and engraved by Cornelis I Galle. With owner's stamps and bookplates. With occasional minor browning or spots, but otherwise in very good condition. Binding rebacked as noted, and with a few scratches and scuff marks, but otherwise good.         I Siciliani

Torino: Einaudi, , 1977. Rilegato tela, sovracoperta (cloth, dust jacket). Molto Buono (Very Good). Testi di Dominique Fernandez e Leonardo Sciascia. Fotografie in bianco e nero di Ferdinando Scianna. 8vo (cm 24x32). pp. XVIII+166. Molto Buono (Very Good). Sovracoperta leggermente sbiadita e screpolata in corrispondenza del dorso (Dj lithgly faded at spine). Prima edizione (First Edition).

Vienna, Matthias Trentsensky (printed by E. Sieger), ca. 1855. Oblong folio (25 x 40 cm). With 19 (of 24) numbered leaves containing about 135 lithographic pen-drawings, each drawing including a base so that one can cut them out, paste them on card stock, stand them up and arrange them in three-dimensional scenes. Loose leaves in a later paper folder.

Kleine Welt des Bilderbogens: der Wiener Verlag Trentsensky (1977), 111; Siefert (ed.), Paläste, Panzer, Pop-up-Bücher (2009), with a chapter, “Die Carawane nach Mecca”, pp. 31-38; not in KVK; WorldCat. All but the first five leaves of a very rare lithographic print series issued in parts. Most copies were probably cut up (and perhaps coloured) by children and destroyed in play. The human figures to be cut out include Turkish, Arabic, African and Near Eastern men and women (black and white) in Islamic clothing, some of the men with a variety of firearms, spears, daggers, pipes, prayer rugs, and other gear and goods. There are also camels, horses and donkeys, often with their gear for riding or for carrying loads. The wild animals include wolves, a hyena and an ostrich. Inanimate objects include containers for water, an incense burner, baskets, chests, barrels, camel saddles and much more. The series must have provided many children and adults with their first notion of Islamic society and culture and is rich in authentic details. With an occasional pencil mark. Lacking leaves 1-5, but otherwise in remarkable good condition. The whole is slightly browned and the edges somewhat tattered.

        In Patagonia

London: Jonathan Cape, 1977. First edition of author's most well-known work and one of the great travel books of the last half of the twentieth century. Octavo, original cloth. Signed by Bruce Chatwin on the title page. Fine in a near fine dust jacket with a touch of rubbing. A very nice example, rare signed. An exhilarating look at a place that still retains the exotic mystery of a far-off, unseen land, Bruce Chatwin's exquisite account of his journey through Patagonia teems with evocative descriptions, remarkable bits of history, and unforgettable anecdotes. Fueled by an unmistakable lust for life and adventure and a singular gift for storytelling, Chatwin treks through "the uttermost part of the earth"— that stretch of land at the southern tip of South America, where bandits were once made welcome—in search of almost forgotten legends, the descendants of Welsh immigrants, and the log cabin built by Butch Cassidy. An instant classic upon publication in 1977, In Patagonia is a masterpiece that has cast a long shadow upon the literary world. "A travel book to stand on the shelf with Graham Greene, Somerset Maugham, and Paul Theroux." (The New York Times Book Review).

        Woman Magazine

I have never seen this prototype available anywhere before now. On June 9, 1977, the Chicago Tribune newspaper reported that Time, Inc. might debut in the first quarter of 1978. It was to be a weekly, and would at first be test-marketed in selected markets. This prototype was distributed internal within Time Inc. to very few employees for their feedback. This copy is a little scruffy, the top and bottom corners of the pages have a slight crease most noticeable on the bottom right corner of the Table of Contents. Contributors included Mary Ellen Mark, Brad Darrach, and Ruth Galvin.
