        In Patagonia

London: Jonathan Cape, 1977. First edition of author's most well-known work and one of the great travel books of the last half of the twentieth century. Octavo, original cloth. Signed by Bruce Chatwin on the title page. Fine in a near fine dust jacket with a touch of rubbing. A very nice example, rare signed. An exhilarating look at a place that still retains the exotic mystery of a far-off, unseen land, Bruce Chatwin's exquisite account of his journey through Patagonia teems with evocative descriptions, remarkable bits of history, and unforgettable anecdotes. Fueled by an unmistakable lust for life and adventure and a singular gift for storytelling, Chatwin treks through "the uttermost part of the earth"— that stretch of land at the southern tip of South America, where bandits were once made welcome—in search of almost forgotten legends, the descendants of Welsh immigrants, and the log cabin built by Butch Cassidy. An instant classic upon publication in 1977, In Patagonia is a masterpiece that has cast a long shadow upon the literary world. "A travel book to stand on the shelf with Graham Greene, Somerset Maugham, and Paul Theroux." (The New York Times Book Review).

        Woman Magazine

I have never seen this prototype available anywhere before now. On June 9, 1977, the Chicago Tribune newspaper reported that Time, Inc. might debut in the first quarter of 1978. It was to be a weekly, and would at first be test-marketed in selected markets. This prototype was distributed internal within Time Inc. to very few employees for their feedback. This copy is a little scruffy, the top and bottom corners of the pages have a slight crease most noticeable on the bottom right corner of the Table of Contents. Contributors included Mary Ellen Mark, Brad Darrach, and Ruth Galvin.

Title and author printed in black on front and spine. Protected by plastic covers. Dust jacket has some modest sunning and a small repaired tear to the head of its spine. Contents fine, dust jacket very good but it is extraordinarily rare to find this highly sought-after and important collection in its original jacket. ffep has a non-authorial gift inscription. Preface by Kiyoshi Otsuji. Text in Japanese.Self and Others was published in 1977 in a very small run of only 300. It is Gocho's most important work and the most revealing of his own difficult life. He was born in 1946 with a rare degenerative illness which prevented him from growing to full adult height; he was only four feet tall. Furthermore Gocho knew from an early age that he would not live beyond middle age; he died in 1983. His three surviving volumes and, in particular Self and Others, are therefore imbued with an overwhelming sense of melancholy and disconnection. It is as though his physical difference and his awareness of his own life's fragility created a distance between himself and the world he observed, a distance bridged by his camera. As we view these images, an entire world, with its possibilities largely thwarted and unachievable in Gocho's case, starts to open, and then close before us. This becomes clearer still when we reflect on the opening image of a new-born baby screaming in its hospital cot and the mysterious closing photograph of a group of people (mainly children) running across a field into a thick fog through which a floodlight dimly glows. This is an important and influential book representing a movement towards the subjective and personal in Japanese photography. It is also a rare book, only one showing on Worldcat, none on Copac and appearing in no recent auction records.

Published in 'Dangling in the Tournefortia' (Black Sparrow, 1981). Aubrey Malone, in 'The Hunchback of East Hollywood: A Biography of Charles Bukowski' references this poem as an example of Bukowski's "incredibly jumpy mind" (p.126). Bukowski creates a poem out of insomnia, and life pressures, "dead cat on the boulevards. / de Sade grinning in the dark. / more trouble in the government. [...] getting an erection / from looking at the girl cashier. / 'how your doing?' she asks / 'I need my teeth drilled,' tell / her [...]"

Collage, ALS and Exhibition Announcement Related to the "Redy-Made Windows" Action in New York

Hungary: Attalai Gabor, 1977. 5 7/8 x 8" collage, sealing wax, rubberstamp and wax paper on a photograph which is rubberstamped at verso. With a 2 pp. rubberstamped TLS to gallerist John Gibson, and a rubberstamped exhibition announcement postcard for a 1977 exhibition by Attalai at Galerie Lóa in 1977. For the Hungarian artist's 1977 "Redy-Made Windows" exhibition in New York cIty, he wrote letters to 16 New York Galleries and bookstores, requesting that they paint a portion of their gallery window red according to a collage enclosed, and document the work with slides sent back to the artist. A brilliant proposal dealing with geography, the art market, and attention, which we can find no documentation of having been realized; an essay by Hock Beáta about Attalai on the Art Pool website suggests that no responses were forthcoming, if we can trust our poor grasp of Hungarian. Fine.

Tertiary History of the Grand Canon with Atlas to Accompany the Monograph on the Tertiary History of the Grand Canon District (two volume set)

Santa Barbara, CA: Peregrine Smith, Inc, 1977. 1/1500. Monograph and Atlas. 264pp. Quarto [30 cm] / Folio [51 cm] Both volumes bound in a 1/2 bonded brown leather over tan canvas boards. The Monograph volume, in fine condition, is slipcased (with mild soiling), and the Atlas volume is without a slipcase. The portfolio housing the plates is a bit worn at the edges, and has a 1 3/4" crack in the front joint at the head of the spine. Atlas: Twenty-three sheets including title-page and table of contents (sheet 1), 12 color maps, 10 color views. Complete with all plates, bright, and showing only very minor edge wear. The number line on the limitation page of the monograph is blank. Overall, the set is in very good condition. This atlas contains the three stunning panoramas, 'From Point Sublime in the Kaibab', by William H. Holmes. These three panoramas offer a 270 degree view of the Grand Canyon. This atlas also contains Thomas Moran's exquisite work, 'The Transept, Kaibab Division, Grand Cañon An Amphitheater of the Second Order.' These four plates have made this work one of the most sought after Western Americana titles. In 1875, Clarence Edward Dutton (1841-1912) joined the United States Geological Survey and is known for his extensive explorations of the Rocky Mountain region. His greatest accomplishment is his Tertiary History of the Grand Canon District of 1882. It is still considered the preeminent work on the Grand Canyon to date. The atlas is beautifully illustrated with maps and views engraved by Julius Bien. Sheet XVIII of the atlas, entitled "The Transept, Kaibab Division, Grand Canyon" is based on the monumental painting of the same title by artist Thomas Moran (1837-1926). Moran, more than any other artist is most closely associated with images of the Grand Canyon. The field artist for the Dutton geological exploration was William Henry Holmes (1846-1933). Holmes was most noted for his sense of realism and accurate draftsmanship. Holmes contributed many finely executed panoramic views of the Grand Canyon to the Atlas that are quite stunning. He exhibited at the National Academy of Design, The Art Institute of Chicago and The Brooklyn Art Club among others. Holmes later held positions as Curator at the University of Chicago (1898-1906) and was a former Director of the National Academy of Design (1920-1932). Farquhar states: "One of the greatest, if not the very greatest of all Grand Canyon books...The atlas, containing the superb panoramic views by William H. Holmes and a drawing by Thomas Moran, is a rich portfolio of art as well as a collection of maps and an exposition of geology." Four page Wallace Stegner introduction at front of monograph.
