The Silent World of Nicholas Quinn

London - Macmillan, 1977 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. A first edition of this third, and rarest, novel in the Inspector Morse series. In the book, the Oxford Foreign Examinations Syndicate runs school exams in the Persian Gulf and other places with a British connection. The Secretary Dr Bartlett and Mr Roope, a chemistry don and a member of the committee, disagree about the appointment of a new member of staff. Roope gets his way and Nicholas Quinn, a deaf man who lipreads, gets the job. When Quinn is found murdered in his maisonette all the staff are under suspicion. With a floor plan of the murder scene. Condition: In a paper covered binding with original unclipped dustwrapper. Externally, sound with slight shelfwear. Dustwrapper is generally sound but with slight age-toning and with amateur tape repairs to chipping at head and to a closed tear to rear flap. Internally, firmly bound. An ex-library copy with institutional ink stamp and marks to front endpapers, verso of title page and final page of text, and very small ink marks to title page and rear pastedown. Generally bright with scattered marks. Overall: GOOD with a GOOD dustwrapper.

Seattle, WA And Fayetteville, AR: Mill Mountain Press / Lost Roads, No. 7-12, 1977. First Edition. Softcover. Very Good +. First Printing. A Very Good+ copy of Stanford's magnum opus, published the year before he committed suicide. A 542-page stream of consciousness poem, written in one sentence. This copy has a section torn from the half-title page, as if to write a note, and is gently read. The spine has vertical creases and there is something crossed out in marker on the inside rear cover, but overall (and despite the flaws) the book is in very clean, collectible condition. A cult favorite among poets and slowly gaining broader recognition after the 2000 reprinting. This book is quite scarce and rarely comes (or stays) on the market. Additional photos available upon request. Very Good +.

Rock Scene: June 1977, July 1977, September 1977, October 1977

Bethany, CT: Rock Scene, 1977. Near fine condition overall.. An archive of all the original photographs used to produce four issues of Rock Scene Magazine from 1977, comprising a virtual who's who of the music world, including extensive documentation of The Sex Pistols, Patti Smith, The Ramones, The Clash, Blondie, Bryan Ferry, Kiss, Iggy Pop, David Johansen, The Bay City Rollers, Bruce Springsteen, etc. Photographers include well-known music personalities like Bob Gruen, Roberta Bayley, and Donna Santisi; many other lesser-known or uncredited photographers are also included. Rock Scene was a seminal rock and roll publication which in its own understated way reported the thinking music fan's transition from the hard rock and stadium rock bands of the mid-1970's into the punk and new wave bands of the late 1970's and early 1980's. Unlike the other 1970's newsstand rock magazines, Rock Scene embraced punk from the beginning and promoted obscure new groups in their "New Bands" section. The magazine's lifespan from 1973 to 1982 was a glorious time in the music world. This archive contains nearly complete photographic files for four issues: June 1977, July 1977, September 1977 and October 1977. There are a total of approximately 635 stamped / marked photographs and 141 additional uncredited / press photographs. Most of these are 8 X 10 inches, but some are 7 X 10 or 5 X 7 inches. Many photographs have numeric annotations on the edge image corresponding to the page placement in the magazine.

English Bread and Yeast Cookery. With illustrations by Wendy Jones.

First edition, 8vo, xxii, 591, (1) pp. Photographic illustrations plus drawings in the text. Loosely inserted are two excellent autograph letters from the author. Cloth, d.w., price clipped, a fine copy. The two letters, one on David's headed paper, are both two pages long. To the same recipient, the first is dated December 1974 and is a spirited piece of invective, starting with a complaint about the publisher David Higham ("Hasn't he got anything to do?... he just won't stay sacked. Roald Dahl... said 'get rid of him, he's a prick'. I'm afraid that in this household that's what he's known as...") before moving onto the subject of bread ("I wish Mother and her Home Pride would stay on strike forever...") and newspaper recipes ("One says put your dough into polythene bags and doesn't say how you pull it out - if indeed you can...") The second, dated March 1976, is more sober in tone, concerning as it does the recipient's health, and David touches on her own problems ("I had the equivalent of a coronary when I had that stroke... one may be thankful that these horrible warnings sometimes come at an age when one can make a good recovery..."), but finishes with an amusing vignette of going to receive her OBE ("Just as I was going in to do my curtsey the gold-stick-in-waiting bent down and hissed in my ear 'I make all my bread according to your instructions..."). Very scarce examples of Elizabeth David's prolific correspondence and forceful character.

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1977. "'You want my life?' Milkman was not shouting now. 'You need it? Here.' Without wiping away the tears, taking a deep breath, or even bending his knees--he leaped. Cambridge, Massachusetts: Harvard University Press, 1992. "A work that has been inexplicably overlooked by the field of ludic criticism is Toni Morrison's intriguing text Playing in the Dark... Morrison observes that her interests lie in the curious literary construction of 'America' and how the black presence has been ever present though rarely acknowledged. She is interested 'in the way black people ignite critical moments of discovery or change the emphasis in literature not written by them." - James H. Evans and David Jensen, Playing -First edition, signed, review copy. Octavo, original cloth, original dust jacket. The Nobel Lecture in Literature 1993. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1994. The peace I am thinking of is not at the mercy of history's rule, nor is it a passive surrender to the status quo. The peace I am thinking of is the dance of an open mind when it engages another equally open one..." -First edition, review copy. "Surely it is an odd way to spend your life--sitting alone in a room with a pen in your hand, hour after hour, day after day, year after year, struggling to put words on pieces of paper in order to give birth to what does not exist, except in your head. Why on earth would anyone want to do such a thing? The only answer I have ever been able to come up with is because you have to, because you have no choice." - Paul Auster, from the book -Advanced reading copy. In semi-glossy wrappers. -First edition, signed. 203 x 127 mm, original boards and dust jacket. Home. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 2012. "Part of Morrison's longstanding greatness resides in her ability to animate specific stories about the black experience and simultaneously speak to all experience. It's precisely by committing unreservedly to the first that she's able to transcend the circumscribed audience it might imply. This work's accomplishment lies in its considerable capacity to make us feel that we are each not only resident but co-owner of, and collectively accountable for, this land we call home." - New York Times Book Review -Uncorrected proof.
