Rock Scene: June 1977, July 1977, September 1977, October 1977

Bethany, CT: Rock Scene, 1977. Near fine condition overall.. An archive of all the original photographs used to produce four issues of Rock Scene Magazine from 1977, comprising a virtual who's who of the music world, including extensive documentation of The Sex Pistols, Patti Smith, The Ramones, The Clash, Blondie, Bryan Ferry, Kiss, Iggy Pop, David Johansen, The Bay City Rollers, Bruce Springsteen, etc. Photographers include well-known music personalities like Bob Gruen, Roberta Bayley, and Donna Santisi; many other lesser-known or uncredited photographers are also included. Rock Scene was a seminal rock and roll publication which in its own understated way reported the thinking music fan's transition from the hard rock and stadium rock bands of the mid-1970's into the punk and new wave bands of the late 1970's and early 1980's. Unlike the other 1970's newsstand rock magazines, Rock Scene embraced punk from the beginning and promoted obscure new groups in their "New Bands" section. The magazine's lifespan from 1973 to 1982 was a glorious time in the music world. This archive contains nearly complete photographic files for four issues: June 1977, July 1977, September 1977 and October 1977. There are a total of approximately 635 stamped / marked photographs and 141 additional uncredited / press photographs. Most of these are 8 X 10 inches, but some are 7 X 10 or 5 X 7 inches. Many photographs have numeric annotations on the edge image corresponding to the page placement in the magazine.

Seventy of the 227 are hardcover copies; all of these have jackets if issued as such.         English Bread and Yeast Cookery. With illustrations by Wendy Jones.

First edition, 8vo, xxii, 591, (1) pp. Photographic illustrations plus drawings in the text. Loosely inserted are two excellent autograph letters from the author. Cloth, d.w., price clipped, a fine copy. The two letters, one on David's headed paper, are both two pages long. To the same recipient, the first is dated December 1974 and is a spirited piece of invective, starting with a complaint about the publisher David Higham ("Hasn't he got anything to do?... he just won't stay sacked. Roald Dahl... said 'get rid of him, he's a prick'. I'm afraid that in this household that's what he's known as...") before moving onto the subject of bread ("I wish Mother and her Home Pride would stay on strike forever...") and newspaper recipes ("One says put your dough into polythene bags and doesn't say how you pull it out - if indeed you can...") The second, dated March 1976, is more sober in tone, concerning as it does the recipient's health, and David touches on her own problems ("I had the equivalent of a coronary when I had that stroke... one may be thankful that these horrible warnings sometimes come at an age when one can make a good recovery..."), but finishes with an amusing vignette of going to receive her OBE ("Just as I was going in to do my curtsey the gold-stick-in-waiting bent down and hissed in my ear 'I make all my bread according to your instructions..."). Very scarce examples of Elizabeth David's prolific correspondence and forceful character.
