A MORBID TASTE FOR BONES (Inscribed By the Author in 1982 for Shrewsbury Abbey Charity Appeal)

New York: Morrow, 1977. Peters, Ellis [Edith Pargeter]. A MORBID TASTE FOR BONES. NY: Morrow, (1977). First Edition (so stated). A FINE copy in a FINE priced dust jacket. REMARKABLE PRESENTATION COPY. In 1982, Edith Pargeter signed this copy while sitting in the Abbey Church in Shrewsbury, home of her fictional historical detective Brother Cadfael. Her American publishers, Morrow, had heard of the appeal in aid of the church and sent 20 copies to the Abbey to be signed by her on March 24th, 1982. The inscription reads: "Abbey 900/Shrewsbury/Edith Pargeter/'Ellis Peters.'" This particular copy was presented to the Abbey's vicar, Ralph Lumley (bookplate, front paste-down) who can be seen in a clipping pasted to the front-free endpaper holding this very book. Here's a quote from the recipient's obituary: "Prebendary Ralph Lumley (1913-1996) was for more than a quarter of a century vicar of Shrewsbury Abbey, the setting for the popular historical novels by Ellis Peters (the nom de plume of Edith Pargeter). Knowing something of her earlier works, Lumley invited the author to give an evening of poetry and prose readings to mark the abbey's 900th anniversary in 1982. The ensuing friendship had an important influence on Pargeter. She has continued to do her own historical research, including that for the Brother Cadfael mysteries; but it was Lumley who helped Pargeter to realize and develop the religious nature of her books." It's hard to imagine a better Brother Cadfael presentation copy making this perhaps "THE" copy of the entire 21-book Brother Cadfael series.. Signed. First Edition. Hard Cover. Fine/Fine.

        The Animal Factory (Signed)

New York: Viking Press, 1977. First edition / First printing.. Hardcover.. A near fine copy in a near fine dust jacket.. Octavo. A common theme in ex-con Eddie Bunker's writing centers on men being pulled into crime at a very young age and the subsequent hardening of their character through early adulthood by a callous and uncaring society. "The Animal Factory" is a prison novel that delves deep into San Quentin State Prison society, a world of violence and paranoia, where territory and status are ever-changing and possibly fatal commodities. Crime fiction came natural for Bunker and it was during his last internment, in 1975, that he discovered his writer's voice and penned "No Beast So Fierce." It debuted to critical acclaim and was turned into the 1978 film, "Straight Time" starring Dustin Hoffman. ~Adapted for film in 2000 by John Steppling and Bunker, "The Animal Factory" tops a long list of prison movies for its realistic portrayal of the subculture that runs throughout prison life. Directed by and co-starring Steve Buscemi, the film also stars Edward Furlong, Williem Dafoe, and Mickey Rourke. As an actor, Bunker performed in more than 20 films, but it was writing that he truly loved (having also penned the screenplay for cult-classic film, "Runaway Train" in 1985. Novelist, screenwriter, actor, ex-con, Bunker died July 26, 2005 at the age of 71. ~SIGNED and inscribed on the half-title page by the author: "To Tony B. A good dude. Eddie Bunker." A near fine copy with a slight slant to spine, and light foxing to page-block, in a near fine jacket with edge-wear to foot of spine and a short closed tear to head of spine, barely noticeable.

New York City, NY: Farrar, Straus & Giroux, 1977. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. Fine/Fine Dust Jacket.. New York City, NY: Farrar, Straus & Giroux, 1977. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. First Edition/First Printing. 207 pages. The author's third collection of essays. One of the greatest books of the 20th century. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now rare. Presents six brilliant and challenging essays on photography that represent the fullest expression of Susan Sontag's lifelong attempt to find both the common ground and the dividing line between ethics and aesthetics. Her "moralist/aesthete" dual sensibility prevents Sontag from rejecting photography outright (because it can be singularly beautiful and useful). But she could not embrace it wholeheartedly either (because it is usually facile and not serious enough). Her insight about "photographic seeing" is an Arnoldian criticism of modern life itself (as shallow, narcissistic, and mindless). Such ambivalence about the subject at hand would have been a dead-end for most other writers, but photography engaged Sontag as it has no other writer in the Western tradition: She devoted the better part of seven years to write these six essays. Her sustained examination of photography as a source of knowledge, as an instrument of conscience, as a work of art, and as a uniquely evocative trace of reality (rather than a mimetic representation of it) remains sensational and will not be surpassed. There are a handful of books on photography that will endure. There are only two that are great: Susan Sontag's "On Photography" and Roland Barthes' "Camera Lucida" (1981), the most profoundly personal account ever written on the subject. Barthes owes nothing less than the framework of his book to "On Photography" (he merely recapitulates or takes many things for granted because Sontag has already articulated them). Sontag eventually re-examined some of her own views in her last book, a sequel aptly titled "Regarding The Pain of Others", in light of extreme circumstances, especially 9/11 and the War on Terror. An absolute "must-have" title for Susan Sontag collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in blue pen on the front free endpaper by Susan Sontag. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page or bookplate. This title is now highly collectible. This is one of very few signed copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a beauty. Most copies available online have major flaws or are subsequent printings. A rare signed copy thus. Winner of the MacArthur Genius Grant, the National Book Critics Circle Award in 1977 for "On Photography", the National Book Award in 2000 for "In America", and the Jerusalem Prize in 2001. Shimon Peres, in awarding the Jerusalem Prize, described Sontag as "one of the world's finest writers and greatest minds". One of the most influential and important American writer-intellectuals of the 20th century. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER SUSAN SONTAG TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 0374226261.

It is copiously illustrated (including "sixteen pages especially produced by the artist"), and features numerous texts by Alechinsky as well as an introduction by renowned playwright Eugene Ionesco. Limited to one hundred copies only, this is from the edition that is SIGNED AND NUMBERED by the artist with a SIGNED AND NUMBERED color lithograph laid in, as issued. A most handsome copy. Morbid Taste for Bones, A A Mediaeval Whodunnit

London: Macmillan, 1977. First edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/fine. A very nice copy of the first Brother Cadfael novel. In this book Edith Pargeter combined her excellent historical novel abilities with her nom-de-plume Ellis Peters' well-constructed mysteries and started the boom in historical mysteries that continues to this day. There are many earlier examples of the form, but this is where it takes off and becomes a major publishing category. Historically important, well written, and a scarce book to find in nice condition. This copy has a previous owner's minuscule inscription on the front free endpaper (signature and date of 10 Dec 77, and the cryptic notation "F.E." indicating it was purchased through British bookseller Francis Edwards Ltd.), and very slight bumping to the spine, both head and tail, creasing the jacket slightly. The jacket is unclipped, and the book was not read more than once or twice. A nice copy of a cornerstone volume. Any photo attached to my listings are of the actual book described, not a stock photo. Seattle, WA and Fayetteville, AR: Mill Mountain Press / Lost Roads, No. 7-12, 1977. First edition. Softcover. Fine. A lovely copy of this scarce and important work of modern poetry. Fine, without wear, and the first fine copy of this title that we have seen. Exceptional condition for a book, which is generally found well-used. Stanford's magnum opus, published the year before he committed suicide. A 542-page stream of consciousness poem, written in one sentence. A cult favorite among poets and slowly gaining broader recognition after the 2000 reprinting. Fine.
