        Winston S. Churchill, The Official Biography, Companion Volume IV, Parts 1, 2 & 3, January 1917 - November 1922

London: William Heinemann Ltd., 1977. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very good/Fine. The Official Biography of Winston Churchill, initiated by Randolph Churchill but completed by Martin Gilbert, is an epic piece of scholarship about a singularly epic life, comprising eight mammoth main text volumes and - so far - sixteen accompanying document or "Companion" volumes. The eight main text volumes were published between 1966 and 1988. Publication of the Companion volumes continues today. These three volumes accompany the fourth volume of Churchill's Official Biography and cover January 1917 to November 1922, encompassing Churchill's return to the government after the Dardanelles disaster and his final six years in power as a Liberal, serving at various Cabinet posts in the coalition government of Lloyd George. Here is a full set of the three Volume IV companion volumes, all three the British first edition, only printing. All three volumes are in very good plus condition in fine dust jackets. The red cloth bindings are clean and tight with sharp corners and bright spine gilt. The bindings are slightly marred only by a faint vertical crease on each of the three spines. The contents of all three volumes are bright with no spotting and no previous ownership marks. The red-stained top edges retain strong, uniform color with absolutely none of the typical sunning. The fore and bottom edges are lightly soiled. There were two prices on the dust jacket flaps - an original introductory price and then a higher price specified after January 31st, 1978. Both prices remain intact on all three dust jackets. There are no losses or tears. The spine lettering of this edition proved incredibly vulnerable to sunning, often fading to nearly white. This set is a treat, with absolutely no fading to the spine printing. Searching for dust jacket flaws, we note only the slightest suggestion of wrinkling at a few spine ends. These dust jackets are about as good as they come. The dust jackets are protected in removable, archival quality clear covers. Note that this large, heavy set may require additional postage.         VER SACRUM 1898-1903

New York: Rizzoli, (1977). Small finger smudge on title page, else fine in near fine dust jacket. First edition in English Large, square quarto. 329p. With 412 illustrations, 100 in color. Gilt-titled cloth in colored patterns The Vienna Secession - one of the most important movements in the history of twentieth-century art - chose for its official organ the intriguing name of VER SACRUM, the ancient Roman custom of offering the entire produce of a spring to the gods. In the heroic years that followed their 1897 revolt against the Vienna academy, Gustav Klimt, Kolo Moser, Josef Hoffmann, Otto Wagner and the other painters, architects and craftsmen belonging to the movement contributed to make of VER SACRUM probably the most brilliant publication in the country."         Winston S. Churchill, The Official Biography, Companion Volume IV, Parts 1, 2 & 3

London: William Heinemann Ltd., 1977. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Very good. These three volumes accompany the fourth volume of Churchill's Official Biography and cover January 1917 to November 1922. All three volumes are fine in very good+ dust jackets. The red cloth bindings are all clean and fresh with bright gilt and good corners. The Part 2 boards have dark vertical striations that are clearly a binding flaw. The contents of all three volumes are crisp, clean, bright, and tight with no spotting and no inscriptions. The red stained top edges retain deep, unfaded red color. The dust jackets are unclipped with only trivial wrinkling at extremities. The Volume IV spine lettering of this edition proved incredibly vulnerable to sunning, often fading to nearly white. This set is better than usual but still affected. The red title lettering at the head of the spines is bright and clear. The Title and author lettering at the center of the spine and the publisher name at the base of the spine are still clearly legible, but a bit faded. The dust jackets are protected in removable mylar covers.

Small folio, ca. 280 x 215 mm. Unbound. 3ff. notated in pencil on one-side of each leaf. 68 measures in total. & & The final state of the manuscript. A note in the composer's hand to the last page carries instructions for the transfer of the score into Finale, the music notation software program. . Commissioned by the New York Virtuoso Singers to celebrate the choir's 25th anniversary, the present work was first performed by them under the direction of the noted choral conductor Harold Rosenbaum at Merkin Concert Hall in New York on October 21, 2012. The text is by the Chinese poet of the Tang dynasty's Kaiyuan era Wang Zhihuan (688-742). & & "... the beauty of Chen Yi's beguiling and animated setting of 'Let's Reach a New Height' comes from the way her music interacts with the vivid verbal imagery, a metaphorical take on a Tang dynasty poem about striving higher in years to come." Anthony Tommasini in a New York Times Review, October 23, 2013& & "Sent to the countryside as a labourer during the Cultural Revolution, she kept her violin with her, entertaining farmers with melodies from ‘revolutionary operas’ condoned by the Gang of Four and practising Western repertory when she was alone. After returning home at the age of 17, she served as leader and composer for the local Beijing opera troupe. She studied composition with Wu Zuqiang and visiting professor Alexander Goehr at the Central Conservatory in Beijing when it reopened in 1977... Her honours have included awards from the Guggenheim, Ford, Rockefeller, Alpert, Fromm and Koussevitzky foundations, and the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters. In 2001, she became the second-ever recipient of the Charles Ives Living Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and the ASCAP Concert Music Award... Chen’s music combines Western compositional techniques with elements of Chinese musical tradition." Joanna C. Lee in Grove online

[Original Promo Poster for US Release of NEVER MIND THE BOLLOCKS...]

Los Angeles: Warner Bros., 1977. First Edition. Very good. 33" x 24" approx. color poster printed verso only. Folded in sixths, presumably as issued. Some wear at edges. Very good. Original 1977 promotional poster for the US release of the Sex Pistol's only studio album NEVER MIND THE BOLLOCKS HERE'S THE SEX PISTOLS. Featuring a large B&W image of Rotten with a smaller photo inset of the band and a two line quotation from "No Future" ("We're the flowers in the dustbin..."), the poster lacks the signature Jamie-Reid designed intensity of the Pistols' UK promotional items. Warner Brothers Records signed the Pistols in October 1977 and released BOLLOCKS less than a month later - rushing the album into print in order to capitalize on the various UK Pistols controversies as well as the band's upcoming (and ultimately aborted) US tour.         The Wind in the Willows

London: Methuen Children's Books,, 1977. Illustrations by Arthur Rackham. Introduction by A. A. Milne. Octavo (223 × 150 mm). Contemporary green calf by Bayntun, spine gilt in compartments with tools based on the novel's characters, black morocco labels, gilt tool to upper board depicting Mole, Toad, and Mouse, marbled endpapers, double-line rules to boards, turn-ins, and all edges gilt. Colour frontispiece and 11 plates by Arthur Rackham. A few minor scuffs to binding. An excellent copy. A handsomely bound copy of the Rackham edition of Wind in the Willows. Rackham had been asked to illustrate the first edition of the book in 1908, but was already committed to illustrating A Midsummer Night's Dream and turned Grahame down. It was a decision he regretted for much of the rest of his life, until given the opportunity to illustrate the book for the Limited Editions Club in the late 1930s. First published in 1940, his illustrations for this children's classic would be his last, and one of his most loved, sets of illustrations.

Sontag wrote frequently about the intersection of high and low art." - wikipedia. "The essays in Susan Sontag's controversial collection were originally published in the New York Review of Books. They deal with the work of individual photographers, Atget, Sander, Evans, Frank, and Arbus, to name just a few, as well as with larger historical and philosophical issues regarding photography." All future discussion or analysis of the role of photography in the affluent mass-media societies are now bound to begin with her book." - John Berger. "Not many photographs are worth a thousand of [Susan Sontag's] words." - Robert Hughes, Time. "After Sontag, photography must be written about not only as a force in the arts, but as one that is increasingly powerful in the nature and destiny of our global society." - Newsweek.         FREE THE WILMINGTON 10. RALLY FOR HUMAN RIGHTS IN THE U.S.A. featuring Angela Davis, Co-Chairperson ? National Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression, Friday July 8, 1977 [poster]

      - Milwaukee: Milwaukee Alliance Against Racial and Political Repression, 1977. Original, unbacked poster, 11 x 17." Staple holes in corners with a tiny tear to upper left corner where staple was removed. Horizontal fold line, else near fine. Signed by the collector, J. W. Miller; from his collection of about 100 posters collected in the 1970s around the University of Wisconsin, Madison. The Wilmington Ten were nine young men and a woman, who were convicted in 1971 in Wilmington, North Carolina of arson and conspiracy, and served nearly a decade in jail. The case became an international cause in which many critics of the city's actions characterized the activists as political prisoners. In 1980 in Chavis v. State of North Carolina, (4th Cir., 1980), the convictions were overturned by the federal appeals court, on the grounds that the prosecutor and the trial judge had both violated the defendants' constitutional rights. In May 2012, Benjamin Chavis and six surviving members of the group petitioned North Carolina governor Beverly Perdue for a pardon. The NAACP was supporting the pardon, as well as compensation to be paid to the men and their survivors for their years in jail. On December 22, 2012 The New York Times published an editorial titled, "Pardons for the Wilmington Ten" that urged Governor Perdue to "finally pardon" the group of civil rights activists. Perdue granted a pardon of innocence on December 31, 2012, which qualified each of the ten to state compensation of $50,000 per year of incarceration. None in commerce (2013); no locations in OCLC.
