Berlin & New York: Walter de Gruyter 1977-2010.. 13 Bände (von 14). Gr. 8° (22,5 -25 cm). Orig.-Leinenbände mit Orig.-Schutzumschlägen. [Hardcover / fest gebunden].. [...]. - The Enzyklopädie des Märchens (Encyclopedia of the Folktale) (published by Walter de Gruyter) is a reference work presenting the results of almost two centuries of international research in the field of folk narrative tradition past and present. By 2014, 14 volumes have been published (Aarne - Zypern). The Encyclopedia is to comprise 14 volumes, each volume consisting of three fascicles and containing a total of 720 pages. As of 1997, it is published at the rate of one fascicle per year. Once completed, the Encyclopedia will comprise approximately 3900 alphabetically arranged entries categorized as follows: "Theories and methods, genre questions, problems of style and structure, issues of context and performance; Short monographs on important tale-types and motifs; Biographies of scholars, collectors, and authors of literary works relevant to folk narrative research; National and regional surveys providing information about folk narrative tradition and folk narrative research. The title Enzyklopädie des Märchens does not imply a genre restriction to Märchen in terms of modern definitions. The Encyclopedia deals with all narrative categories which the Brothers Grimm, according to their broad conception of Märchen, have included in their Household Tales, i. e. tales of magic, but also animal tales, fables, religious tales, aetiological narratives, religious, historical, and demonological legends, novelle, humorous tales, formula tales, etc. This corresponds to the genres found in the AaTh and ATU indices. The Encyclopedia aims at comparing the rich stock of narrative material available from a broad range of ethnic groups which has been transmitted orally and through the medium of literature, and at pointing out its social, historical, psychological and religious backgrounds. It focuses on the oral and literary narrative traditions of Europe, and of countries influenced by European culture, as well as on those from the Mediterranean area and from Asia. The folk traditions of peoples who have only recently become literate are dealt with in regional surveys. Furthermore, the channels of transmission of narrative themes and motifs are traced in sources such as exempla and sermon books, chronicles, legendaries and chapbooks, as well as literary works which have a bearing on oral tradition, thus illustrating the permanent exchange between literature and oral tradition." - Dust jackets very slightly rubbed. - Very clean and good copy.

"Let's Reach a New Height." Composition for unaccompanied four-part chorus (SATB). Autograph musical manuscript full score. Complete. Signed and dated by the composer April 14, 2012

Small folio, ca. 280 x 215 mm. Unbound. 3ff. notated in pencil on one-side of each leaf. 68 measures in total. The final state of the manuscript. A note in the composer's hand to the last page carries instructions for the transfer of the score into Finale, the music notation software program. . Commissioned by the New York Virtuoso Singers to celebrate the choir's 25th anniversary, the present work was first performed by them under the direction of the noted choral conductor Harold Rosenbaum at Merkin Concert Hall in New York on October 21, 2012. The text is by the Chinese poet of the Tang dynasty's Kaiyuan era Wang Zhihuan (688-742). "... the beauty of Chen Yi's beguiling and animated setting of 'Let's Reach a New Height' comes from the way her music interacts with the vivid verbal imagery, a metaphorical take on a Tang dynasty poem about striving higher in years to come." Anthony Tommasini in a New York Times Review, October 23, 2013 "Sent to the countryside as a labourer during the Cultural Revolution, she kept her violin with her, entertaining farmers with melodies from ‘revolutionary operas’ condoned by the Gang of Four and practising Western repertory when she was alone. After returning home at the age of 17, she served as leader and composer for the local Beijing opera troupe. She studied composition with Wu Zuqiang and visiting professor Alexander Goehr at the Central Conservatory in Beijing when it reopened in 1977... Her honours have included awards from the Guggenheim, Ford, Rockefeller, Alpert, Fromm and Koussevitzky foundations, and the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters. In 2001, she became the second-ever recipient of the Charles Ives Living Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and the ASCAP Concert Music Award... Chen’s music combines Western compositional techniques with elements of Chinese musical tradition." Joanna C. Lee in Grove online

Wear to spine and corners. More images available on request. Very scarce. Surely the most obscure and ethereal punk photobook around, and also one of the nicest. So- Costa came to London in '76 and '77 and photographed The Cortinas, Cherry Vanilla, The Lurkers, XTC, Johnny Moped, Generation X, Swanky Modes, The Roxy, the toilets of the 100 club and lots of the people and places. What makes this book quite special is the rough and raw quality, and the somewhat voyeuristic nature of the pictures, which are incredible. Very much like a travel scrapbook for the down and out in crowd of the late seventies. Pretty special, cited in Parr Badger 3.
