Archive of Iggy Pop original publicity material, tour itineraries, original photos, and related correspondence

An archive of publicity and other material related to Iggy Pop tours in 1977. Most of the material seems to come from Pop's PR firm, De Witt Public Relations, and includes publicity photos by important rock photographers, press clippings, concert itineraries, etc. An interesting overview of the immediate post-Stooges solo career of Iggy Pop. After the Stooges broke up (for the second time) in 1975, Pop went to Berlin with his friend, supporter, and sometimes collaborator David Bowie in order to tame his drug addiction. In 1976 he accompanied Bowie on tour, his first experience of large scale professional touring. In 1977 he signed with RCA to pursue a solo career, co-writing songs with Bowie, and touring extensively, often with Bowie in support on keyboards. His two albums from that period, The Idiot and Lust for Life, both co-produced by Bowie, were his most critically acclaimed as a solo artist. It's a little hard to overestimate the influence of Iggy on punk music and what follows, but we'll try. While his stage antics (rolling in broken glass and smearing himself with various substances) often overshadowed his music, his brand of hard rock, accompanied by the Stooges, and itself influenced by the MC5, became a prime proto-punk source that influenced and helped inform the mid-70s transition of hard rock into punk. Reportedly he performed the first intentional stage dive (as opposed to a long list of performers who would either just fall off stage because they were drunk or drugged; or in a few instances because they were preoccupied with assaulting an audience member). At any rate this is interesting and contemporary nuts-and-bolts primary source material from an important figure in the early days of an equally important transformation in rock music. A detailed list available upon request. .

        In Patagonia [hybrid proof].

Summit, [1977]. - 204 pp. Advance Proof is an unusual "hybrid" of the 1st U.K edition (1977) with elements of the 1st U.S. Ekdition (1978). Modifications include: 1) the U.K. dust jacket is missing (in its place is the U.S. proof d.j.); 2) the pictorial upper and lower free end papers are excised from the U.K. edition and then affixed to the respective upper and lower past downs of the U.S. edition (so no illustrations appear); and 3) the black and white photographs after pp. 60, 76, 124 and 140 are also excised out. The U.S. publisher's dust jacket states "Probable publication: June 1978" and includes reviews by Paul Theroux, Malcolm Deas, Maurice Richardson, S.W. Lambert and Nicholas Wollaston (all U.K. reviews) which do not appear on the U.K. dust jacket but do appear on the U.S. The U.S. edition lacks illustration: i.e.; neither are there photos inside nor are there pictorial end papers. There are numerous hand written marginal notes in pen, concluding with, "Reviewed for Quest Magazine; Michael Mewshaw" on the verso of the last leaf; 8.75 x 5.75 inches. A very interesting and convoluted In Patagonia "proof." Air mail letter from Mewshaw (1995) corroborating being sent this proof and suggestions where to obtain additional information, laid in (addressee fogged out by seller). Evidence of a paper clip on the front d.j. panel; d.j.; spine sunned. See additional images provided. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

MacMillan, New York 1977 - Strugatsky, Arkady and Boris (authors), Theodore Sturgeon (introduction). ROADSIDE PICNIC / TALE OF THE TROIKA. New York: Macmillan, 1977. First Edition in English. First American Edition. 8vo., 245pp. Quarter maroon cloth over blue paper covered boards, stamped silver at the spine. A very fine, fresh example in a very fine bright dustwrapper. A brilliant example of the book which served as the basis for Andrei Tarkovsky's masterful 1979 film, "Stalker," for which the Strugatskys co-wrote the screenplay. Rarely seen in any condition, this is a rare collectible copy. Certainly the most important of Soviet science-fiction writers are the brothers Strugatsky [Arkady and Boris] whose popularity extends throughout Europe & America. Their cannon of works illuminates the S-F world & their highlight is Roadside Picnic / Tale of the Troika translated masterfully by Antonina W. Bouis [Russian: Piknik na obochine]. The preface to the first English & First American edition was written by Theodore Sturgeon. ". . . The Strugatskys posit that the Earth experiences a brief visit from extraterrestrials, who leave behind them - well, call it litter, such as might be left by you and me (in one of our less socially conscious moments) after a roadside picnic. The nature of these discards, products of an utterly alien technology, defies most earthly logic, to say nothing of earthly analytical science, and their potential is limitless. Warp these potentials into all-too-human goals - the quest for pure knowledge for its own sake, the search for new devices, new techniques, to achieve new heights in human well-being; the striving for profit, with its associated competitiveness; and the ravenous thirst for new and more terrible weapons - and you have the framework of this amazing short novel. Add the Strugatskys' deft and supple handling of loyalty and greed, of friendship and love, of despair and frustration and loneliness, and you have a truly superb tale, ending most poignantly in what can only be called a blessing. You won't forget it. Tale of a Troika is a very different thing indeed--so different that it might have been written by quite different authors - which is the highest possible tribute to the authors' versatility. How much you like it will depend on your taste for satire and lampoon. It is, in nature, reminiscent of Lem's Memoirs Found in a Bathtub, with (and here I confess to a highly subjective evaluation) one important difference: Lem's approach and style are, in comparison, unleavened, no matter how deeply he plunges into the surrealistic and the absurd. The cumulative effect is Kafkaesque horror. The Strugatsky fury - and it is fury: disgust with hypocrisy, with bureaucratic bumbling, with self-serving, self-saving distortions of logic and of truth and of initially decent human motivations - their fury is laced with laughter, rich with scorn, effervescent with the comic spirit. One has to search back to Alice's tea party to find a scene as mad as the chamber of the Troika; yet, in retrospect, one realizes that one has experienced a profoundly serious work, since every bent line illuminates a straight one, all illogic signifies the purity from which it has departed. A word of appreciation must be extended to Ms. Antonina W. Bouis, the translator of these short novels. Russian I do not know; fiction I do; and I must honor anyone who can so deftly pass emotion, character dimension, even conversational idiom, through so formidable a barrier". - Theodore Sturgeon, San Diego, California 1976. The story was written by the Strugatsky brothers in 1971 (the first outlines written January 18 - 27, 1971 in Leningrad, with the final version completed between October 28 & November 3, 1971 in Komarovo . It was first published in the Avrora literary magazine in 1972, issues 7 - 10. Parts of it were published in the Library of Modern Science Fiction book series, vol. 25, 1973. It was also printed in the newspaper Youth of Estonia in 1977 -1978. More [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Do You Not See [with recordings]

Truax Press, Kent, CT 1977 - Kent, CT: Truax Press, 1977. First/Limited Edition. No. 10 of 500 copies designed by Nichols. Signed by Nichols on dedication leaf. Calligraphy by Loretta Pan. Separate 19 page introduction, translation and technical analysis of poems by Stuart H. Sargent. Translators include Kenneth Rexroth, Arthur Waley, Henry Hart, Burton Watson and others. 16 poems in Chinese with English translations, on loose folding sheets along with pen-&-ink illustrations by Nichols, the Chinese calligraphy by Loretta Pan; along with separate folder containing printed sheets giving short biographies of artist, calligrapher, the readers of the poems for the records, etc.; Sargent's booklet in wrappers; two long-playing (33-1/3 r.p.m.) records of Chinese poetry reading. All items set into folding cloth portfolio, overall 12-1/2x17-1/2. Nichols brought together a large group of folks - including such poets as Po Chu-i, Tu Fu, Li Po, Su Tung-p'o and others - for this impressive production, an obvious work of love. The separate wraps-bound introduction and technical analysis of the poems, along with his own translation of them, by Stuart Sargent in which he treats "transciption of sound" and "tone pattern" is itself a fascinating read, and gives an idea just how difficult translation between Chinese and English is. Condition throughout: Fine. LBB-D [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]
