These were printed without a price to allow the country receiving same to set their own price. Some of these may have made their way to other English speaking countries like Australia.         Peach [from a manuscript florilegium]

Watercolor and gouache on paper prepared as Vellum Circa Sixteenth Century - This magnificent botanical painting, executed in watercolor and gouache, is from only the fifth florilegium identified to be by Jacques Le Moyne to date. The paintings from this set are roundly considered to be his finest achievement. Le Moyne was among a rare and exclusive group of artists who specialized in the creation of florilegia. Most examples were printed, following in the tradition of the herbals of such authors as Leonhart Fuchs, but a few original painted florilegia were commissioned by wealthy amateur botanists and aristocrats who wished to have pictorial records of the valuable plants to be found in their gardens. The extraordinary career and oeuvre of the Huguenot artist Jacques Le Moyne de Morgues have only relatively recently been defined and described (see Paul Hulton, The Work of Jacques Le Moyne de Morgues, A Huguenot Artist in France, Florida, and England, 2 vols., London, 1977). The varied circumstances of his artistic production must surely be unique in the history of art; although large periods of his career are undocumented, he appears to have worked as a court artist in France, under Charles IX, is known to have traveled to Florida in 1564, as official artist and cartographer to the ill-fated French attempt to establish a colony there, and to have ended his career as a highly regarded botanical artist in Elizabethan London, where his patrons included Sir Walter Raleigh and Lady Mary Sidney. Le Moyne was born around 1533, in Dieppe. The first thirty years of his life are undocumented, but it seems reasonable to suppose that he trained as an artist in his native town, which was at the time a notable center both for cartography and for illumination. Hulton believed that Le Moyne probably worked at the court of the French King Charles IX, although there is no documentary record to that effect. Le Moyne's highly important account of this transatlantic voyage, known today from a Latin edition published in Frankfurt in 1591 under the title Brevis narratio eorum quae in Florida Americai provincia Gallis acciderunt, does, however, clearly indicate that it was the King who instructed the artist to accompany the expedition, headed by the notable mariners Jean Ribault and Rene Goulaine de Laudonniere, as official recording artist and cartographer. Although only one original drawing by Le Moyne of an American subject is known today -- the depiction of Athore showing Laudonniere the Marker Column set up by Ribault, executed in watercolor and gouache on vellum, now in the New York Public Library -- the Brevis narratio, published by Theodore de Bry as the second volume of his great series of publications on voyages to the New World, contains forty-two engraved illustrations and maps made on the spot by Le Moyne. The text fully describes and analyses these images, and this volume constitutes a major landmark in the literature of the early exploration of the Americas. Laudonniere's expedition, though resulting in the production of the fascinating Le Moyne/de Bry publication and an important map of the coastal regions of Florida, was ultimately a disaster; the good relations initially established with the Indian tribes inhabiting the territories around the settlement site at St. Johns soon soured, in addition to which various members of the French party became disaffected, and revolted against their leaders. The final coup de grace came when a Spanish force attacked Laudonniere's stronghold at Fort Caroline, and in the end Le Moyne was one of only fifteen or so survivors of the original party to return safely to Europe; having lost their way, they sailed half-starved into Swansea Bay in mid-November 1565, and finally reached Paris early in 1566. But life in France soon became untenable, due to the Huguenot massacres, and in 1572 Le Moyne fled to England. Until well into the present century, our knowledge of Jacques Le Moyne de Morgues was extremely limited, and largely confined to the footnotes of inaccessible ethnograph

(Harry H. Lunn Jr.), Washington, D.C. 1977 - [Virginia Woolf] Gisèle Freund. ORIGINAL SIGNED PHOTO [DIE TRANSFER] 1 OF ONLY 36 COPIES. Washington, D.C. (Harry H. Lunn Jr.), 1977. The original Woolf dye-transfer photograph signed by the artist in ink & in fine condition. Image size approx: 11" 3/8 x 7" 1/2. One of 30 numbered copies, from the limited edition of 36 in all. The prints were made in 1977 by the dye-transfer process which produces exceptionally pure colors, with superior light & dark fastness & tonal range, executed at the K & S Laboratories in Chicago for Freund's amazing portfolio: "Au pays des visages. Ten original color portraits". A letter from Virginia Woolf to Vita Sackville West notes that Freund is a "devil woman", but the 1939 portrait photo taken at her house is one of the most revealing of Woolf ever taken. Each print is signed in ink by the artist on the front and numbered and studio-stamped on the back. The other subjects, photographed in the years 1938 & 1939, are Colette, André Gide, James Joyce, Adrienne Monnier, Jean Cocteau, Simone de Beauvoir, Jean-Paul Sartre, André Malraux & Vita Sackville-West. A beautiful example. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

A Time of Gifts, Between the Woods and the Water, The Broken Road

London: John Murray, 1977 Book. Illus. by John Craxton, Ed Kluz. Near Fine. Hardcover. Signed by Author(s). 1st Edition. (Time of Gifts) [frontispiece] [8] pp 1-291 [1] (Woods and Water) [10] pp 11-248 (Broken Road) xxii, pp 1-362. The three volumes in first edition of Patrick Leigh Fermor's account of his epic walk to Constantinople, now seen as one of the great works of travel literature in the language and only completed last year with the publication of the third volume, The Broken Road. All three books are first editions in their jackets, the first volume with Patrick Leigh Fermor's very elusive errata slip laid down on the front pastedown. A Time of Gifts is near fine in blue publisher's boards, without ownership inscriptions; the jacket has been price clipped and has no tears and is very nearly fine. Between the Woods and the Water is fine in a near fine jacket which has not been price clipped. (Between the Woods and Water appeared in two issues, one without a front blank from which this example comes.) The Broken Road is mint in all respects and signed on the title page by the editors Colin Thubron and Artemis Cooper who recently became the author's biographer. It was Patrick Leigh Fermor's good fortune to set out on his great adventure in the early nineteen thirties before Nazism and the Second World War changed the Europe for ever, but to wait forty years before writing the first two volumes of his luminous narrative. His account of German beer cellars, of Prague under snow and love in Vienna, all occurring while the shadow of Nazism looms, bears comparison with Chatwin, Robert Byron and the best twentieth century writers in any genre.         Fractals: Form, Chance, and Dimension.

      W. H. Freeman, San Francisco 1977 - First edition of the mathematician's groundbreaking work. Quarto. Inscribed and dated by Benoit Mandelbrot on the title page. Some foxing to the page edges, very good in an excellent dust jacket with a some light wear to the extremities. In 1975, Benoit Mandelbrot coined the term fractal to describe these structures and first published his ideas in 1975, and later translated, Fractals: Form, Chance and Dimension. According to mathematics scientist Stephen Wolfram, the book was a "breakthrough" for Mandelbrot, who until then would typically "apply fairly straightforward mathematics . to areas that had barely seen the light of serious mathematics before." Wolfram adds that as a result of this new research, he was no longer a "wandering scientist", and later called him "the father of fractals": Until Mandelbrot, most mathematicians believed the irregular shapes found in nature were too fragmented or amorphous to be described mathematically. However in the 1960s and 1970s, Mandelbrot developed his concept of fractal geometry, which helped bring order to complex problems in physics, biology, and even financial markets.         Der Tod der Jungfrau Maria mit dem herbeigeilten Aposteln.

Italienische Forschungen 3. Folge, Band X. Herausgegeben vom Kunsthistorischen Institut Florenz. München 1977, pp. 368.369, tavv. 151-152) oder die Kompositionszeichnung "Der heilige Beatus da Orta heilt die Lahmen" in den Uffizien (R. Spinelli, Domenico Pugliani, in: Il Seicento Fiorentino. Arte a Firenze da Ferdinando I a Cosimo III. Disegno, Incisione/ Scultura/ Arti minori. Ausst.-Kat. Florenz, Palazzo Strozzi, 1986/87, No. 2.194).

Farrago rerum theologicarum uberrima . . .[Colophon:] Wittenberg, [Melchior Lotter the younger], [preliminary note dated:] [15]22. 4to. With the title in an elaborate woodcut border (17.5×12 cm) attributed to Lucas CRANACH the elder, with numerous figures and Philip Melanchthon's coat of arms. The book has spaces with guide letters, intended for manuscript initials, but they have not been filled in. Boards covered with plain paper (ca. 1800?).

Panzer IX, 83; Pennink, Niet-Nederlandse drukken 952; VD 16, J 600; cf. Nijhoff & Kronenburg 2202 (1st ed.); for the woodcut border: Stickelberger-Folger (1977). Second or third edition, published in the same year as the extremely rare first edition, of the first collection of Wessel Gansfort's important and influential writings on theology. Gansfort (1419-1489) was one of the earliest theologians of the Low Countries to begin to embrace humanism and to call for reform in the Church. In the wake of Martin Luther and the Reformation, Protestants published this first collection of his writings, presenting him as one of their forerunners. In fact, Gansfort never advocated separating from the Catholic Church, believed in free will, did not accept justification by faith alone, and did not reject the sacraments in principle. But many of his views did anticipate those of the Protestants. In the sixteenth century Gansfort's writings were placed on the Index of prohibited books. He certainly stands as a leading figure who helped prepare the way for the Reformation. With a cancel stamp and a manuscript note on an endleaf referring to other editions. In good condition. Binding dirty and slightly worn.

The renowned Bernard C. Middleton Collection of Books on Bookbinding rests at the Melbert B. Cary, Jr. Graphic Arts Collection at Rochester Institute of Technology Library."For students of library history whose view of it includes historical bibliography, Dudin's L'art de rélieur-doreur de livres (Paris, 1772) is a book of considerable interest. Part of its importance derives from its inclusion in the monumental, unnumbered series of the Académie Royale des Sciences of Paris, Descriptions dea arts et mêtiers. The idea for the series- a detailed, scientifically objective, illustrated description of all the mechanical arts or crafts practiced in France - dates back to 1666" (Horn, Journal of Library History, Vol 14, No. 4, Fall 1979, p. 511)."The earliest technical works upon Bookbinding are not easily accessible, and are chiefly known on account of an allusion to them in a later work, entitled: L'Art du Relieur-doreur de Livres. This treatise was written by M. Dudin" (Home, The Binding of Books: An Essay in the History of Gold-Tooled Bindings, p. viii).
