        Le Chien Guingan et le Chat Calicot

      Mill Valley, CA: Sunflower Press, 1977. (16)ff. From an edition of 250 copies printed and signed by Carol Cunningham, this copy is in an original designer binding by Sonya Sheats. Evoking the fierce battle between the Gingham Dog and the Calico Cat, the artist envisioned "a tangle of lines tracing the tossing and tumbling" of the small beasts in the middle of the night," drawing sharp, angular, intersecting lines in red, blue, and gray enamel across the covers to map their struggle. This motion is set against a background of subtly textured and shaded natural dark parchment, which Sheats notes "has a soft, round, and whole presence." The binding structure is an homage to the influential German bookbinder Otto Dorfner, employing an open-joint style that he innovated. The spine is covered separately from the boards, which are then connected with four bands of pale blue water snakeskin. The ends of the bands are hidden under half-moon onlays of the same natural parchment. For contrast, the doublures are thin, bright white parchment. The book slides into a parchment-covered box etched with the title on one side in a modern, san-serif font. Elements of the design also hint at the influence of Brother Edgard Claes, including the sliding polycarbonate closure to the box which is painted with lustrous beige automotive paint. Sheats describes her work as part of the tradition of French fine bookbinding, mixing traditional techniques with modern materials. She apprenticed with Anne Vion in France and has studied with some of Europe's leading bookbinders. Illustrated throughout in bright primary colors by Marcie Collin, who also translated Eugene Field's popular children's poem "The Duel" into French for this miniature tome. Extremely fine, protected in a blue microsuede pouch. (2 1/4 by 2 1/2; 57x64mm).

Brief von Anderschs Biographen Stephan Reinhardt. - Mit zahlreichen weiteren Beilagen (s. u.). - An den Feuilletonisten, Essayisten, Biographen und Schriftsteller Rolf Michaelis (geb. 1933) von der &quote;Zeit&quote; betr. einer Rezension von Heinrich Böll in der &quote;Zeit&quote; (I), des Abdrucks eines Briefs von Konstantin Simonow (I und II) bzw. über seine Absage der Besprechung des Kriegstagebuchs von Simonow, der für ihn &quote;ein hochkomplizierter, raffinierter Mann des Widerstandes gegen Stalin&quote; sei (III). I: &quote;Über dieses Zeichen von Ihnen, die Literaturbeilage, die Böll-Rezension, und wie sie aufgemacht war, habe ich mich sehr gefreut, wie Sie sich denken können. Bölls Replik war umso wichtiger, als die Leser natürlich mal wieder unisono gegen den Brief an Simonow votierten; allerdings hängt das damit zusammen, dass Leserbriefe nur immer von den Rechten geschrieben werden, die Linken sind sich zu fein dazu, mir haben einige zustimmend geschrieben, aber auf die Idee, dass Sie ihre Briefe, - in meinem Interesse -, besser an die ZEIT gerichtet hätten, sind sie nicht gekommen. Einen Brief möchte ich Ihnen zeigen, weil er wirklich Substanzielles enthält und für mich (und wahrscheinlich auch für Sie) die nun eingetretene Situation beeinflussen kann. Alexander Kaempfe ist, soweit ich weiss, heute wirklich einer der besten Kenner der modernen russischen Literatur, und vielleicht sollte man seine Gesichtspunkte bei der weiteren redaktionellen Behandlung der Angelegenheit berücksichtigen. Was er über Simonow schreibt, ist für mich natürlich niederschmetternd, dass ich seinen Beurteilungen nicht blind vertrauen kann, zeigt seine flapsige Bemerkung über den Böll-Artikel, aber ich fürchte, - und andererseits hoffe ich -, dass seine Einschätzung der russischen Situation doch richtig ist [...]&quote; (Br. v. 10. April 1977). - II: &quote;[...] Ihrer Aufforderung entsprechend habe ich einen kurzen Text zur Einführung in den Simonow-Brief geschrieben [...]&quote; (Br. v. 5. Oktober 1977). A. d. erwähnten Typoskript: &quote;[...] Die Zeit' war so freundlich, ihren Lesern eine gekürzte Fassung meines Briefs zu vermitteln [...] Von vornherein stand fest, dass die Zeit' auch die Antwort Simonows auf meinen Brief veröffentlichen würde. Diese Antwort stellte die Redaktion allerdings vor erhebliche journalistische Probleme, denn in ihr trat sogleich die berühmte schirokaja natura', die breite Natur' des russischen Charakters hervor - mit anderen Worten: sie war ungeheuer lang. Ein Riemen', wie man im journalistischen Jargon sagt, und Simonow war nicht gewillt, sich von dem Umfang seiner Ausführungen auch nur ein Wort abhandeln zu lassen. So kam denn dieses ungewöhnliche publizistische Unternehmen zustande: dem Westen wird eine sowjetische Stimme gänzlich unzensiert zu Gehör gebracht; ein russischer Schriftsteller darf sich ausreden ... [...]&quote;. - III: &quote;Ich würde es einfach nicht schaffen, dieses Kriegstagebuch von Simonow zu besprechen. So, wie ich gebaut bin, würde ich mich dazu in einen halben Meter Militärgeschichte hineinarbeiten wollen, dazu käme das Problem der Editionsgeschichte von Simonows Büchern in der Sowjetunion und in Deutschland, deren Zusammenhang mit den Tagebüchern geklärt werden müsste, und da gibt es so rätselhafte Dinge, wie die Neuedition von Tage und Nächte', versehen mit einem Wachzettel-Wort von Hermlin aus dem Jahre 1946, so dass man also nur annehmen kann, Kindler drucke die Version aus der Stalin-Zeit, was wiederum zu der Annahme führen kann, S. sei nichts weiter gewesen als ein Opportunist, der sich mit den verschiedenen Versionen seiner Bücher durch die verschiedenen Epochen der sowjetischen Nachkriegszeit durchgeschwindelt habe [...]&quote; (Br. v. 28. September 1979). - Andersch hatte im Oktober 1975 auf Einladung von Konstantin Simonow, dem Vorsitzenden des sowjetischen Schriftstellerverbandes, an einer internationalen Autorenkonferenz in Moskau teilgenommen; in seinem Offenen Brief an Simonow vom selben Jahr hatte er seine Rückkehr zu früher vertretenen sozialistischen Positionen angesprochen und sich zu einer politischen und literarischen Biographie bekannt; im Jahr darauf war ein thematisch vergleichbarer Artikel entstanden, in welchem Andersch den öffentlichen Auftrag eines Schriftstellers definiert. - Die Photographien zeigen Andersch im mittleren und reiferen Mannesalter. - Weiters beiliegend ms. Photokopien von Briefen Anderschs (u. a. eines Briefes an den Bundeskanzler betr. eines &quote;Gnaden-Akts für Peter Paul Zahl&quote;) und anderer, Notizen (meist von Michaelis), Zeitungsartikeln, Fragmenten, Doubletten u. v. m. - Rolf Michaelis promovierte über &quote;Die Struktur von Hölderlins Oden&quote; und war hernach Redakteur des Feuilletons der &quote;Stuttgarter Zeitung&quote;. Von 1964 leitete er das Literaturblatt der &quote;Frankfurter Allgemeinen Zeitung&quote;, bis er 1968 als deren Kulturkorrespondent nach Berlin wechselte. 1973 wurde er Leiter des Literaturteils der &quote;ZEIT&quote; und war dort von 1985 bis 1998 als Feuilleton-Redakteur tätig. - Die Briefe jeweils auf Briefpapier mit gedr. Printed in black with hand painting in blue, two shades of pink, yellow, violet, and green watercolour after editioning. State i/iii. Edition of 50, No. 48/50, signed and dated in pencil lower right corner. In pristine condition. Image size: 35 5/8 x 23 ½ inches. An early masterpiece by Jim Dine, one of America's greatest artists. Jim Dine is regarded as one of the greatest artists of the twentieth century. In the late 1950's and early 1960's he gained public attention in New York with his Happenings and mixed media assemblages, but his real acclaim followed through his association with the Pop art movement. An innovative and versatile artist, Dine works in a multitude of mediums including painting, sculpture, photography, and printmaking. As a printmaker, he displays an uncommon love of the art form and a penchant for innovative printmaking techniques. He commonly combines etching, drypoint, mezzotint, lithography and woodcut to create complicated images, which resonate with a sense of drama and hidden meaning. He utilizes a myriad of unconventional hand and machine tools, which he uses on the plate and sometimes directly on the paper. As with this print, Dine often recycles his plates to create new or altered images that often display a ghost image of the first work. Dine's oeuvre focuses on isolated objects, which act as the stand-in of autobiography. Hearts, statues, robes, and flowers become metaphors for Dine's life experiences and his visual quest for the self. This important print is the first of three prints, Hand Colored Flowers (1977), Black and White Flowers (1977), and Red Ochre Flowers (1978), which Dine made from the same plate. In creating this print, Dine used a staggering array of different engraving techniques to create a heavily worked plate. In addition to soft-ground etching, hard-ground etching, aquatint, and drypoint, Dine used a mezzotint rocker as an engraving tool and to raise burr. The plate was cut down for the two later states and a die-grinder was used to change the shape of the vase and the details of the bouquets. According to D'Oench, the dense plate work and heavy inking is typical of the prints editioned with Mitchell and Friedman, Dine's primary American printer between 1975 and 1979. This haunting image is an important early print by Dine and a wonderful expression of his artistic genius. It is rarely seen on the market, making it a true collector's item.         SCREENPLAY FOR THE MOVIE "GREYSTROKE"

      no-publisher, August 4, 1977)., (No-place: - Early draft of Robert Towne's screenplay for the 1984 movie "Greystroke," which was based on Burroughs' novel, TARZAN OF THE APES. The film was directed by Hugh Hudson with Christopher Lambert starring as "Tarzan" (the name is never used in the film's dialogue) and Andie MacDowell as Jane; the cast also included Sir Ralph Richardson, who received an Academy Award nomination for "Best Supporting Actor." Unfortunately Towne, who was apparently frustrated at being passed over for director, used the pseudonym "P. H. Vazak" (the name of his dog) for the film and so his Oscar nomination for "Best Adapted Screenplay" was under that name. 170 pages, printed on rectos only, clasp bound with black card covers. Plain white label on front with handwritten "GREYSTROKE / Rob't Towne"; title handwritten on "spine" (left-side page edges). Covers a little loose but holding, otherwise very good.
