Original proofs for the artwork on Love You Live

New York: Rolling Stone Records,, 1977. 2 colour-printed proofs (418 × 710 mm each) on thick card stock. Very good indeed. Possibly unique proofs of the album cover artwork commissioned from Andy Warhol for the Rolling Stones album Love You Live. These proofs, which were purchased from the late Art Collins, President of Rolling Stones Records, are almost certainly the only set surviving that show the design as it was intended by Warhol, without the hand-drawn title and track-listing with which it was issued. These were a considerable bone of contention for Warhol, who had imagined the record label would put the album out in a transparent sleeve of some sort with the titling and credits imposed, leaving his artwork - complete as far as he was concerned - untouched, something he made abundantly clear to Jerry Hall; "I told Jerry I thought Mick had ruined the Love You Live cover I did for them by writing all over it - it's his handwriting, and he wrote so big. The kids who buy the album would have a good piece of art if he hadn't spoiled it" (The Andy Warhol Diaries, 5 July 1978). Vincent Fremont, who ran Warhol's businesses and was the executor of his estate, confirmed that "Andy was very upset about the text that got added to his original artwork for the cover of Love You Live … that the work on the cover was conceived by Warhol as an image only and that he very very upset about the addition of text to the final printed form". All of which meant that Warhol was genuinely loth to sign copies of the album presented to him, remarkable for a man notorious for his willingness to append his signature to more or less anything put in front of him.

WHEN I WAS TWO [Book Number 68]

Rochester, NY: Visual Studies Workshop Press, 1977. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine/near fine. Oblong 4to. Original red cloth in dust-jacket. Offset printed. Easily near fine or better overall with just touches of wear at the extremities. Else bright, clean, and sharp overall. INSCRIBED by Smith in year of publication to title page. From an edition of 300 unnumbered copies. [52]pp. Smith's first book intended for wider circulation. Though numbered 68 in his oeuvre, until WHEN I WAS TWO Smith had created no edi- tions larger than 30 - with the vast majority being one-of-a-kind, and all circulated primarily if not exclusively among intimates. (Book #65 was printed in an edition of 70, but according to Smith "I gave a few copies away. The remainder are still in our upstairs library" - 200 BOOKS 112.) Therefore, in many ways what essen- tially marks the start of Smith's public career as a book artist and book arts educator. Indeed, the Visual Studies Workshop was instrumental in the popularization of the artist's book in the 1970s. In this particular work, Smith's inventive photographic and darkroom techniques represent "levels of reality [...] When I Was Two utilizes pictures and text about events I remember from when I was two years old until an adult. It was my first public written expression of personal events“ (200 BOOKS 116-17). A landmark book in a landmark career, about which Betty Bright has written: "Smith has done more than any American book artist to analyze, extend, relocate, and communicate the book's expressive range" (NO LONGER INNOCENT 219). [Smith, 200 BOOKS, 113-17].

        Fractals: Form, Chance, and Dimension.

      W. H. Freeman, San Francisco 1977 - First edition of the mathematician's groundbreaking work. Quarto. Light wear, else near fine in a near fine dust jacket that shows a closed tear to the crown of the spine. Inscribed by the author. An important work, rare signed and inscribed. In 1975, Benoit Mandelbrot coined the term fractal to describe these structures and first published his ideas in 1975, and later translated, Fractals: Form, Chance and Dimension. According to mathematics scientist Stephen Wolfram, the book was a "breakthrough" for Mandelbrot, who until then would typically "apply fairly straightforward mathematics . to areas that had barely seen the light of serious mathematics before." Wolfram adds that as a result of this new research, he was no longer a "wandering scientist", and later called him "the father of fractals": Until Mandelbrot, most mathematicians believed the irregular shapes found in nature were too fragmented or amorphous to be described mathematically. However in the 1960s and 1970s, Mandelbrot developed his concept of fractal geometry, which helped bring order to complex problems in physics, biology, and even financial markets.         ORIGINAL CARICATURE OF CAPOTE together with HAND-WRITTEN NOTE

1977. Double matted and framed together. The original image depicting Capote as an underworld figure in a pin stripe zoot suit with U.S. flag stitched on the arm, brandishing a machine-gun "violin" case with a warhead missile protruding. Rendered in India ink on stiff drawing paper, measuring approximately 12 x 14". It is by well-known caricaturist Taylor Jones--signed by him and dated 1977. Taylor drew caricatures for the Los Angeles Times Syndicate before joining Tribune Media Services. Among his clients are The Chicago Tribune, the Los Angeles Times, The Philadelphia Inquirer, The Seattle Times and many other dailies; he has been a frequent contributor to The New Republic and U.S. News & World Report. The note, in Capote's hand, is on a single sheet measuring approximately 4 x 6". The words go well with the haughty/hostile image: "Dear Sir -- I do not have time to answer your request -- T. Capote." Fine.
