        SEPTEMBER, SEPTEMBER

New York: Random House, (1977). First edition. Hardcover. A near fine tight copy (ownership signature to verso of last page) with remainder mark (the Random 'house'), in a near fine, clean dust jacket with a closed tear to the top of the rear panel. This copy is inscribed by Foote on the front endpaper, "For / Michael Hargraves / displaced in Frisco / from / Shelby Foote / Memphis Nov 1982." In this novel, a magisterial historian of the Civil War charts its distant repercussions in the streets of the contemporary South. By turns wryly comic, ribald, and chilling, a convincing thriller and a powerful tragicomedy of race

De geographia libri octo, summa cum vigilantia excusi.Basel: Hieronymus Froben & Nikolaus Episcopius, the elder, 1533.

<i>Editio princeps</i>, the first printing of Ptolemy's celebrated <i>Geography</i> or <i>Cosmology</i> in its original Greek text. This is a fine, unrestored copy in its original binding. A rare book on the market: the Evelyn-Garden copy, bound in restored seventeenth-century calf, is the only copy to have appeared at auction since 1977.<br/><br/> ❧<i>PMM</i> 18 (1462 edition); Garden Sale 23 (this edition).<br/><br/> "Ptolemy's <i>Geography</i> is the only book on cartography to have survived from the classical period and one of the most influential scientific works of all time. Written in the second century AD, for more than fifteen centuries it was the most detailed topography of Europe and Asia available and the best reference on how to gather data and draw maps. Ptolemy championed the use of astronomical observation and applied mathematics in determining geographical locations. But more importantly, he introduced the practice of writing down coordinates of latitude and longitude for every feature drawn on a world map, so that someone else possessing only the text of the <i>Geography</i> could reproduce Ptolemy's map at any time, in whole or in part, at any scale" (Berggren & Jones, <i>Ptolemy's Geography: An Annotated Translation of the Theoretical Chapters</i>, 2000). <br/><br/> "The core of the <i>Geography</i> consists of three parts necessary for Ptolemy's purpose: instructions for drawing a world map on a globe and on a plane surface using two new map projections (Book 1.22-24), a catalogue of localities to be marked on the map with their coordinates in latitude and longitude (2.1- 7.4), and a caption or descriptive label (<i>hypographe</i>) to be inscribed on the map (7.5). As a supplement Ptolemy adds instructions for making a picture of a globe with a suitable caption (7.6-7), and describes a way of partitioning the known world into twenty-six regional maps, with a detailed caption for each (Book 8). The introductory chapters (1.1-21) set out fundamental principles for obtaining the data on which the world map is to be based, and necessary conditions for a good map projection; Ptolemy devotes much space here to criticism of his predecessor, Marinos" (Berggren & Jones, p. 4). <br/><br/> "The <i>Geography</i>, in eight books, is an attempt to map the known world. The bulk of it consists of lists of places with longitude and latitude, accompanied by very brief descriptions of the chief topographical features of the larger land areas. It was undoubtedly accompanied in Ptolemy's own publication by maps like those found in several of the manuscripts. But knowing how easily maps are corrupted in copying, Ptolemy takes pains to ensure that the reader will be able to reconstruct the maps on the basis of the text alone: he describes in book I how to draw a map of the inhabited world and lists longitudes and latitudes of principal cities and geographical features in books II-VII. Book VIII describes the breakdown of the world map into twenty-six individual maps of smaller areas. Ptolemy tells us that the <i>Geography</i> is based, for its factual content, on a similar recent work by Marinus of Tyre. But it seems to have improved on Marinus' work (for which the <i>Geography</i> is the sole source of our knowledge) in several ways ... Ptolemy was probably the first to employ systematically listings by latitude and longitude. <br/><br/> "Ptolemy also criticizes Marinus' map projection, a system of rectangular coordinates in which the ratio of the unit of longitude to that of latitude was 4:5. Ptolemy objects that this system distorts distances except near the latitude of Rhodes (36°). While accepting such a system for maps covering a small area, for the world map he proposes two alternative projection systems (I, 21-24). The known world, according to Ptolemy, covers 180° in longitude from his zero meridian (the Blessed Isles) and in latitude stretches from 16.25° south to 63° north. In his first projection the meridians are mapped as radii meeting in a point <i>H</i> (<i>not</i> the north pole), the parallels of latitude as circular arcs with <i>H</i> as center. Distances are preserved along the meridians and along the parallel of Rhodes, and the ratio of distances along the parallel of 63° to those along the parallel of the equator is preserved. These conditions completely determine the projection ... The second projection aims to achieve more of the appearance of a globe. The parallels of latitude are again constructed as circular arcs, but now distances are preserved along three parallels: 63° north, 23.50° north, and 16.25° south. The meridians are constructed by drawing circular arcs through the points on these three parallels representing the same angular distance from the central meridian, which is mapped as a straight line along which distances are preserved. The first projection is (except for the modification south of the equator) a true conic projection; the second is not, but for the segment covered by the map is a remarkably good approximation to the true conic projection that was later developed from it (the Bonne projection, which preserves distances along all parallels). Ptolemy took a giant step in the science of mapmaking, but he had no successor for nearly 1,400 years" (<i>DSB</i>).<br/><br/> The work begins with a dedicatory letter from Erasmus to Theobald Fettich, who owned the manuscript used for the printing of this first edition of the Greek text (see Allen, <i>Opus Epist. Erasmi</i> VI, p. 436, letter no. 1767 and X, p. 148, letter no. 2760). "In the early sixteenth century, "geography" was not yet a well-established science. Thus, it was quite remarkable that Erasmus of Rotterdam (ca. 1469-1536), one of the era's leading theologians and humanists, introduced the first Greek edition of the <i>Geography</i> of Ptolemy (ca. 100-170), published in Basel in 1533, by claiming that "hardly any other mathematical discipline is more attractive or more necessary." Erasmus called attention to the changing status of this newly emerging area of study and emphasized its importance ... As Erasmus composed this introduction, the first spectacular European overseas discoveries were still fresh in memory. Since the last decade of the fifteenth century, European seamen had circumnavigated Africa and discovered large islands and the American mainland in the western and southern oceans. These discoveries had triggered a revolution in both the content and the contours of the broad field known as cosmography. By 1533, it was obvious that to learned and interested Europeans that the entire ocean could be navigated, that all parts of the earth were habitable, and that the earth and water together formed one single globe" (<i>The Cambridge History of Science</i>, Vol. 3, pp. 469-70). <br/><br/> Adams 2222; Armstrong, 'Copies of Ptolemy's Geography in American Libraries,' <i>NYPL Bulletin</i>, vol. 66, #2; BM, German Books, p. 718; Brunet IV, p. 950; Goldschmidt, <i>Printed Book of Nordenskiold</i>, Facsimile-Atlas, 17; <i>Printing and the Mind of Man</i>, p. 11.. 4to (205 x 155 mm), contemporary blind-tooled pigskin over wooden boards with manuscript letting to spine and front board, upper front hinge with crack, remains of brass clasps preserved, old amateur paper repair to inner front hinge, old inscription and stamp crossed out on title page, two parts in one: pp. [8], [1] 2-542, [2]; [16], [1] 2-205, [3]. A fine, clean and genuine copy in its original and unrestored binding. Rare

In the Heart of the Country [Signed for the Publisher]

London: Secker & Warburg. (1977). His first novel published outside of his native South Africa (published in the U.S. as From the Heart of the Country), this was also his first book to tackle head-on the political antagonisms between the colonizer and colonized, in particular in his native South Africa, where the tensions were exacerbated by racism. He has returned to these themes repeatedly, and has won the Nobel Prize for Literature as well as winning the Booker Prize twice. This book was made into the film Dust in 1985, directed by Marion Hansel, which won two awards at the Venice Film Festival that year. Signed by the author for the publisher, Tom Rosenthal. Laid in is an autograph note signed by Rosenthal, dated in 2007: "John Coetzee signed this book for me when he came here for dinner on his next visit to London following his first Booker Prize win with Life & Times of Michael K." Mild toning to endpages; near fine in a near fine dust jacket with the original price intact and no sticker, with tanning to the spine lettering and trace edge wear.         Abbie Hoffman, Jokesmith

n.p., n.p. 1977 - An archive of manuscript and correspondence, various dates, circa 1977. Contents include: 1). The manuscript "Cosmic Car Rental", a brief article on the Los Angeles car rental company Rent-A-Wreck, no date, approximately 350 words on one sheet (both sides) of yellow legal pad paper, entirely in Hoffman&#146;s hand and signed by him at the close; 2) a letter addressed to a magazine editor on one sheet (both sides) of yellow legal pad paper, approximately 200 words, concerning possible, future assignments, signed by Hoffman as "Howie"; 3) a photocopied example of an article submitted to the magazine in Hoffman&#146;s capacity as their TV critic, with copyediting mark-ups and corrections in blue ink, not in Hoffman&#146;s hand; 4) another photocopied article, apparently a response to an article by Timothy Leary which had previously appeared in the same magazine, Hoffman&#146;s title of "Brainwashing For Fun and Profit" crossed out and with copyediting and corrections as part of the copy; 5) a 6 page copy of an article concerning Hoffman&#146;s relationship with a mythical sea creature, original typescript; 6) 21 pages of manuscript from "The Farmer Shows The Fugitive; or; Square Dancing In The Ice Age," Hoffman&#146;s 1982 book, original typescript, with a 2 page photocopy insert in the middle of the manuscript, the entire manuscript with corrections in both Hoffman&#146;s and an unknown editorial hand; 7) two airmail envelopes addressed in Hoffman&#146;s hand, one postmarked Santa Monica, CA March 3, 1977, the other Miami, FL 11 March, 1977; 8) a letter from Hoffman&#146;s literary agent concerning his article on Jimmy Carter&#146;s presidential inauguration, dated February 16, 1977; and, 9) and 10) finally, and perhaps the most interesting, two short notes from Hoffman containing the gag lines for three proposed cartoons, one of which Hoffman offers but makes a point of saying "I do not want my name associated with [it]," a sentiment which is entirely understandable once the gag line is known. During the period this material dates from, Hoffman was on the run and living underground, having jumped bail in 1974 and remaining a fugitive until 1980, when he turned himself in to the authorities. A substantial amount of material, with interesting content. While letters and similar material from Hoffman appear on the market with some regularity, manuscript material is much less common.         Junky (signed by Burroughs and Ginsberg)

Penguin, New York, 1977. 1st edition thus. The first complete and unexpurgated edition of Burroughs's first book appeared in this Penguin edition, having been originally published by Ace Books as Junkie under his pen name of William Lee. Allen Ginsberg, a long-standing friend, wrote the introduction to this edition. Both have signed the book on the half-title page, and Burroughs has added ' For Linda Stevens' (who was a respected New York book editor, principally for Berkley and Putnam, and also an international reporter for The New York Post). This copy is in fine condition and, with the signatures and association, is unique. It also comes with the scarce Gotham Book Mart's invitation to meet Burroughs at their bookstore on West 47th Street, New York, to celebrate the publication of this edition.

The Chester Play of the Deluge

London: Clover Hill Editions, 1977. Quarto. 30, (5)pp. One of 80 copies, printed by Will Carter at the Rampant Lions Press on Barcham Green handmade paper, watermarked "Clover Hill." Illustrated with ten wood engravings by David Jones, this title is considered by many to be the artist's most important work. According to Hodnett in Five Centuries of Book Illustration, it was with The Chester Play of the Deluge, first published by the Golden Cockerel Press in 1927, that Jones reached his full artistic maturity. Its ten wood engravings "are as original a series of illustrations as any in an English book," Hodnett observes. "Jones's innovation was to integrate the elements of each design in a complex overall pattern by means of interlocking bands of solid black or white." In terms of how these engravings were printed in the Golden Cockerel edition, however, Jones felt that the some of the delicacy of his wood engravings had been lost, as the paper was not properly dampened by the Press as they hurried to meet a deadline. According to the Publisher's Note by Douglas Cleverdon, Jones acquired the ten blocks in order to ensure that they would not be reprinted without his approval. In 1977, Jones gave Clover Hill Editions his blessing to reprint the book using his original blocks, in the manner that he originally intended. In this present edition, the illustrations are at once dark, clear, and retain their minute detail in the fine lines. This copy also contains a portfolio of wood engravings printed on Japon. In the portfolio, the images are printed directly from the blocks onto the Japon, revealing even greater clarity in Jones's work. The book is very fine in the publisher's binding of morocco-backed marbled boards. The book and portfolio are housed in a linen slipcase with a paper label on the spine. All three versions of the prospectus for the book are present.

        Abbie Hoffman, Jokesmith

n.p. : n.p., 1977. An archive of manuscript and correspondence, various dates, circa 1977. Contents include: 1). The manuscript Cosmic Car Rental, a brief article on the Los Angeles car rental company Rent-A-Wreck, no date, approximately 350 words on one sheet (both sides) of yellow legal pad paper, entirely in Hoffmans hand and signed by him at the close; 2) a letter addressed to a magazine editor on one sheet (both sides) of yellow legal pad paper, approximately 200 words, concerning possible, future assignments, signed by Hoffman as Howie; 3) a photocopied example of an article submitted to the magazine in Hoffmans capacity as their TV critic, with copyediting mark-ups and corrections in blue ink, not in Hoffmans hand; 4) another photocopied article, apparently a response to an article by Timothy Leary which had previously appeared in the same magazine, Hoffmans title of Brainwashing For Fun and Profit crossed out and with copyediting and corrections as part of the copy; 5) a 6 page copy of an article concerning Hoffmans relationship with a mythical sea creature, original typescript; 6) 21 pages of manuscript from The Farmer Shows The Fugitive; or; Square Dancing In The Ice Age, Hoffmans 1982 book, original typescript, with a 2 page photocopy insert in the middle of the manuscript, the entire manuscript with corrections in both Hoffmans and an unknown editorial hand; 7) two airmail envelopes addressed in Hoffmans hand, one postmarked Santa Monica, CA March 3, 1977, the other Miami, FL 11 March, 1977; 8) a letter from Hoffmans literary agent concerning his article on Jimmy Carters presidential inauguration, dated February 16, 1977; and, 9) and 10) finally, and perhaps the most interesting, two short notes from Hoffman containing the gag lines for three proposed cartoons, one of which Hoffman offers but makes a point of saying I do not want my name associated with [it], a sentiment which is entirely understandable once the gag line is known.
