Most people were content merely to survive, and to grab what little pleasure they could. But there were others who cunningly played the game of world mastery. Among them were the outstandingly beautiful woman who had ruled the White House for nearly a century, the world's last practising psychiatrist, a psychokinetic pianist, the time traveller, the "chuppers", and the simulacra. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        The View from Serendip

New York: Random House. 1977. First. First edition. Fine in fine dustwrapper with slight toning to the edges of the flaps. Inscribed by Arthur C. Clarke to his protege, one-time secretary, and longtime friend Ian Macauley; "To Ian, this souvenir of a quarter century! All the best, Arthur. NYC 11 Oct. 77." Macauley, an award-winning New York Times journalist, was the dedicatee of Clarke's first published hardcover novel, Islands in the Sky (1952). He also edited Clarke's book of collected essays, Greetings, Carbon-Based Bipeds! (2000). Clarke wrote the last chapter of Childhood End, while visiting Macauley in Atlanta, where he was reportedly greatly influenced by their discussions. A nice association copy of this miscellany, including speculations on space, science and the sea, a short science-fiction story, and "an equatorial autobiography." Macauley has made several pencil and pen alterations in the text, apparently while preparing the essays for the collected volume. .

The Chester Play of the Deluge

London: Clover Hill Editions, 1977. Quarto. 20pp. One of only seven copies printed on vellum by Will Carter at the Rampant Lions Press, and with a separate portfolio containing three sets of the wood-engravings on vellum, hand-made paper, and japon. Illustrated with ten wood engravings by David Jones, this is considered by many to be the artist's most important work. At the early stages of his career Jones was much influenced by the work of Eric Gill, with whom he shared a close association. According to Hodnett in Five Centuries of Book Illustration, it was with The Chester Play of the Deluge, first published by the Golden Cockerel Press in 1927, that Jones reached his full artistic maturity. Its ten wood engravings "are as original a series of illustrations as any in an English book," Hodnett observes. "Jones's innovation was to integrate the elements of each design in a complex overall pattern by means of interlocking bands of solid black or white." In respect to the Golden Cockerel edition, however, Jones felt that the some of the delicacy of his wood engravings had been lost, as the paper was not properly dampened by the Press as they hurried to meet a deadline. According to the Publisher's Note by Douglas Cleverdon, Jones acquired the ten blocks in order to ensure that they would not be reprinted without his approval. In 1977, Jones gave Clover Hill Editions his blessing to reprint the book using his original blocks, in the manner that he originally intended. In this present, ultra-deluxe edition, printed on vellum, the illustrations have a beautiful clarity and heightened, minute detail. Bound in crimson morocco by Sangorski and Sutcliffe, with the portfolio in morocco-backed marbled paper. The book and portfolio are housed together in a slipcase. Extremely fine. With the original prospectus, which includes a bifolium printed vellum sheet and the illustration of Noah's Ark.

        COUNTER-CLOCK WORLD ( Very Fine Copy )

White Lion 1977 - White Lion, UK. 1977. This spare copy from the collection of an extremely condition-conscious Dick collector has been kept in absolutely unread and very fine condition since the day it was collected. The numerous defects that blight many a 'new' book by the time it reaches your local store make a mockery of today's book grading system. A 20 or 30-year old book liberated from a private collection is often in better condition than the brand new potboiler on display at your local supermarket. This unread copy of CCW is in VERY FINE CONDITION, indeed, with sharp, immaculate boards, a spotless, pristine spine, clean untouched pages and a dustjacket that oozes longevity and revels in its fabulous unclipped condition, even though there is a little evidence of rubbing on the rear panel.
