        Abbie Hoffman, Jokesmith

n.p., n.p. 1977 - An archive of manuscript and correspondence, various dates, circa 1977. Contents include: 1). The manuscript "Cosmic Car Rental", a brief article on the Los Angeles car rental company Rent-A-Wreck, no date, approximately 350 words on one sheet (both sides) of yellow legal pad paper, entirely in Hoffman’s hand and signed by him at the close; 2) a letter addressed to a magazine editor on one sheet (both sides) of yellow legal pad paper, approximately 200 words, concerning possible, future assignments, signed by Hoffman as "Howie"; 3) a photocopied example of an article submitted to the magazine in Hoffman’s capacity as their TV critic, with copyediting mark-ups and corrections in blue ink, not in Hoffman’s hand; 4) another photocopied article, apparently a response to an article by Timothy Leary which had previously appeared in the same magazine, Hoffman’s title of "Brainwashing For Fun and Profit" crossed out and with copyediting and corrections as part of the copy; 5) a 6 page copy of an article concerning Hoffman’s relationship with a mythical sea creature, original typescript; 6) 21 pages of manuscript from "The Farmer Shows The Fugitive; or; Square Dancing In The Ice Age," Hoffman’s 1982 book, original typescript, with a 2 page photocopy insert in the middle of the manuscript, the entire manuscript with corrections in both Hoffman’s and an unknown editorial hand; 7) two airmail envelopes addressed in Hoffman’s hand, one postmarked Santa Monica, CA March 3, 1977, the other Miami, FL 11 March, 1977; 8) a letter from Hoffman’s literary agent concerning his article on Jimmy Carter’s presidential inauguration, dated February 16, 1977; and, 9) and 10) finally, and perhaps the most interesting, two short notes from Hoffman containing the gag lines for three proposed cartoons, one of which Hoffman offers but makes a point of saying "I do not want my name associated with [it]," a sentiment which is entirely understandable once the gag line is known. During the period this material dates from, Hoffman was on the run and living underground, having jumped bail in 1974 and remaining a fugitive until 1980, when he turned himself in to the authorities.         Junky (signed by Burroughs and Ginsberg)

Penguin, New York, 1977. 1st edition thus. The first complete and unexpurgated edition of Burroughs's first book appeared in this Penguin edition, having been originally published by Ace Books as Junkie under his pen name of William Lee. Allen Ginsberg, a long-standing friend, wrote the introduction to this edition. Both have signed the book on the half-title page, and Burroughs has added ' For Linda Stevens' (who was a respected New York book editor, principally for Berkley and Putnam, and also an international reporter for The New York Post). This copy is in fine condition and, with the signatures and association, is unique. It also comes with the scarce Gotham Book Mart's invitation to meet Burroughs at their bookstore on West 47th Street, New York, to celebrate the publication of this edition.

The Chester Play of the Deluge

London: Clover Hill Editions, 1977. Quarto. 30, (5)pp. One of 80 copies, printed by Will Carter at the Rampant Lions Press on Barcham Green handmade paper, watermarked "Clover Hill." Illustrated with ten wood engravings by David Jones, this title is considered by many to be the artist's most important work. According to Hodnett in Five Centuries of Book Illustration, it was with The Chester Play of the Deluge, first published by the Golden Cockerel Press in 1927, that Jones reached his full artistic maturity. Its ten wood engravings "are as original a series of illustrations as any in an English book," Hodnett observes. "Jones's innovation was to integrate the elements of each design in a complex overall pattern by means of interlocking bands of solid black or white." In terms of how these engravings were printed in the Golden Cockerel edition, however, Jones felt that the some of the delicacy of his wood engravings had been lost, as the paper was not properly dampened by the Press as they hurried to meet a deadline. According to the Publisher's Note by Douglas Cleverdon, Jones acquired the ten blocks in order to ensure that they would not be reprinted without his approval. In 1977, Jones gave Clover Hill Editions his blessing to reprint the book using his original blocks, in the manner that he originally intended. In this present edition, the illustrations are at once dark, clear, and retain their minute detail in the fine lines. This copy also contains a portfolio of wood engravings printed on Japon. In the portfolio, the images are printed directly from the blocks onto the Japon, revealing even greater clarity in Jones's work. The book is very fine in the publisher's binding of morocco-backed marbled boards. The book and portfolio are housed in a linen slipcase with a paper label on the spine. All three versions of the prospectus for the book are present.

Stiftung Oskar Reinhart Winterthur, Band 2, Zürich 1977, S. 354, Nr. 167.

The John Updike Newsletter, 16 Issues

(Northridge): (Herb Yellin)/(Lord John Press). 1977-1980, 1992. Sixteen consecutive issues (with an 11 year hiatus between Number 14 and Number 15), a complete run of the only serial publication dedicated exclusively to Updike and his work. Issued by Herb Yellin, the founder of Lord John Press and publisher of a number of limited editions of works by Updike. Issue Number One has a tiny edge crease; issue Number 16 has the annotation "You probably have this" in the hand of a bookseller, presumably addressed to the collector who assembled the lot. The double issue Number 11 and 12 does have the 3-page insert "The Coup" laid in. Issue Number Two does not contain the laid in broadside Raining at Magens Bay. Otherwise the lot is fine. Note that issue Number 10 and 11 is smaller than the usual 8-1/2" x 11" format. First Edition. No Binding.

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer [MGM], Beverly Hills, CA 1977 - Final Draft script for the November 7, 1977 TV episode, "The Crypt," season 1, episode 7 of the science fiction series "Logan's Run." This episode is based on an original story by Harlan Ellison.
