Amerikanske Billeder. En personlig rejse gennem det sorte Amerika (American Pictures) - First edition. INCLUDING original portrait of Holdt.

Copenhagen: Informations Forlag, 1977. 4to. Original softcover as issued. 272 pp. Illustrated throughout. Near fine copy with average wear to cover, mainly spine. Inside clean.. In the early 1970s, when Jacob Holdt first arrived in the US with 40 dollars in his pocket, he planned to travel quickly across the country to South America. But, totally shocked and fascinated by what he discovered, he ended up staying five years. His family could scarcely believe the letters he sent them detailing the poverty he saw, so his father sent him a cheap amateur camera in order that Holdt could send home proof of his claims. Living as a vagabond, selling his blood twice a week, hitch-hiking over 100,000 miles, he depicted an incredible and unique portrait of America and its underclass. Several editions of this book was published but this is the rare true first edition and first printing of 'American Pictures'. Parr & Badger II, 247. INCLUDING original photographic portrait of Holdt from 1977

[Group of Items Relating to the Broadside Publication of "You Can't Grip Years ..."]

Shadingfield, Highlands, New Haven, etc., 1977. Octavo, narrow folio and quarto. Folds for mailing, very good to fine. An interesting file of items relating to the April 1976 publication of Bunting's poem at the Sterling Memorial Library's Bibliographical Press in New Haven (100 numbered, signed copies, plus o.s. copies) all addressed to Yale Librarian, John Harrison, then a principal behind the Press' activities. The lot commences with a t.l.s., 20 January 1976, from Jonathan Williams, 1/3 page on Jargon letterhead, relating to the arrangements for Bunting to appear at Yale during his proposed spring tour. This is followed by a 7 March 1976 t.l.s. from Bunting, on personal letterhead, to Harrison, reading in part: "It seems to me that the poem I enclose is the least unfitted of my making to be set up as a broadsheet. It has been printed more than once in magazines, but I have nothing new at all to offer you. I am not fond of broadsheets and posters, but since you find it necessary to raise fund, go ahead. Yours faithfully B Bunting." Accompanying the letter is single sheet unidentified uncorrected rough proof printing of the poem, signed in ink by Bunting and dated 1971. The proof exhibits at least one typo (corrected in ink by Bunting) and some setting irregularities. It is set in sans serif type, thus perhaps distinguishing it from the poem's appearance in the Autumn/Winter Pound issue of AGENDA. The lot concludes with a [2 June] 1977 t.l.s. from Jonathan Williams, discussing a number of things, but also acknowledging receipt of some copies of the broadside ("...Looks good and that paper was obviously a great temptation to print on. Only wish there had been room for the woodblock. I liked it ... I kept #1, greedily, and #s 11 through 19..."). Accompanied by Harrison's own retained copy (which is also clearly denoted as copy #1), and like all copies we have handled, it does include one woodcut.

Punk Rock Your My Big Crybaby - ANNOTATED AND SIGNED TYPESCRIPT & BROADSIDE TO RICHARD HELL

TMS, one page, 7.75 x 10.75, May 1977, signed and inscribed at the conclusion in black ink, "Allen Ginsberg, for Richard Hell, N.Y.C. E. 12 St." Draft of the poem 'Punk Rock Your My Big Crybaby,' hand-edited by Ginsberg to change one word plus some punctuation and grammar. Together with a purple printed broadside of the poem by The Alternative Press, Grindstone City, one page, 8 x 11, signed at the conclusion in black ink, "Allen Ginsberg, 1983." Typed manuscript in very good condition, with intersecting folds, scattered creases, and overall soiling; broadside in very fine condition. A remarkable association.Richard Hell (born Richard Lester Meyers, b. 1949) is an American singer, songwriter, bass guitarist, and writer. An innovator of punk music and fashion, he was one of the first to spike his hair and wear torn, cut and drawn-on shirts, often held together with safety pins. Indeed, Malcolm McLaren, manager of the Sex Pistols, has credited Hell as a source of inspiration for the Sex Pistols' look and attitude, as well as the safety-pin and graphics accessorized clothing that McLaren sold in his London shop, Sex. Hell was in several important, early punk bands, including Neon Boys, Television, and The Heartbreakers, after which he formed Richard Hell & The Voidoids. Their 1977 album Blank Generation influenced many other punk bands and its title song was named "One of the 500 Songs That Shaped Rock" by music writers in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and is ranked as one of the all-time Top 10 punk songs by a 2006 poll of original British punk figures, as reported in the Rough Guide to Punk.William Burroughs served as a mentor to many of the young punk musicians in New York, and the intersections between poetry and punk were not just artistic, but personal. Poets like Ginsberg and the musicians were moving in similar circles in lower Manhattan, and the resonances are still felt today, as the recently-defunct Bowery Poetry Club described its location as being in the shadow of the former location of CBGB's, mentioned in the present poem.

SLASH - RUN OF 26 ISSUES

Los Angeles: Slash, 1977-1980. 26 tabloid issues; newsprint wrappers, offset printed in black and in colors; ca.20-64pp; illus. Publication sequnce as follows: Vol.1, Nos.1-12; Vol.2, Nos.3-11; Vol.3, Nos.1-5. Hint of toning to extremities, with occasional light wear along spine folds, else a uniformly sharp set without horizontal folds - very Near Fine. Near complete run of this seminal west coast fanzine, lacking just two regular issues (Vol.2, Nos.1-2). Created by Philomena Winstanley and Claude "Kickboy Face" Bessy, SLASH was to the Los Angeles scene what PUNK was to the New York scene, running a year longer than PUNK did and instrumental in changing the face of music in L.A. In addition to feature stories on The Damned, Black Flag, X, Stranglers, Dils, Germs, and the Zeros, the publication was miles ahead of its peers in terms of design. The first twelve issues sport haunting two-color cover portraits of prominent artists from the period. Substantial runs are scarce, particularly those in uniformly well-preserved condition. OCLC finds 6 institutions with any issues.

New York: Harcourt, Brace & World; Atheneum, 1966-1977. First U.S. edition, first printing, of the first title; true first editions, first printings of the remaining titles. Although the author moved to the United States in 1963, the 1965 London edition of 'Over Sea, Under Stone' is generally considered the true first; thereafter the U.S. Atheneum editions of the remaining four books in the series are considered the true firsts. "Over Sea, Under Stone" is fine and bright; the dustwrapper is not price-clipped and has a tiny closed marginal tear on the rear panel else it is fine as well. "The Dark is Rising" has a tiny bit of spotting on the edge of the textblock , else is in fine condition; the dustwrapper is not price-clipped,but has a short closed marginal tear on the front panel; it is first state without the Newbery Honor sticker. "Greenwitch" is fine in a fine, unclipped dustwrapper. "Silver on the Tree" has a trace of spotting on the top edge else is fine; the dustwrapper is not price clipped and is fine. Overall this is as fine a set of the 'Dark is Rising' Series as can be obtained. Laid into the first volume is a photograph of Susan Cooper inscribed "To Gretchen -- best regards, Susan". And, in a different hand (Gretchenb's?), "Minneapolis, May 1977." Contemporary Arthurian fantasy and the struggle between The Light and The Dark. "The Grey King" was awarded the Newbery Medal in 1976, and "The Dark is Rising" a Newbery Honor in 1974. Near fine.

James Bond, The Spy Who Loved Me

London, Pan Books 1977, 1977. Spy novel, a paperback original; published simultaneously with a hardcover edition. Slim octavo, pictorial card wrappers. Near fine. SIGNED and INSCRIBED by James Bond actor Roger Moore to half-title 'Best Wishes | Roger Moore 007'. This is the original story / novel of the 1977 James Bond film 'The Spy Who Loved Me' written under licence from Ian Fleming's copyright holders Glidrose. When Fleming sold the film rights to his novels he would not consent to this title and Moonraker being filmed as written; he felt 'The Spy Who Loved Me' was an experimental novel (with female perspective and narrative), and 'Moonraker' was somewhat dated; therefore both would need re-writing and Christopher Wood was brought in by director Lewis Gilbert to produce a screenplay and subsequent novel, a task he repeated for the next film 'Moonraker'.

Enzyklopädie des Märchens. Handwörterbuch zur historischen und vergleichenden Erzählforschung. Herausgegeben von Kurt Ranke [ab Band 5 von Rolf Wilhelm Brednich] zusammen mit Hermann Bausinger, Wolfgang Brückner, Max Lüthi, Lutz Rörich, [...]. - Bände 1-13 (A-Verf).

Berlin & New York: Walter de Gruyter 1977-2010. 13 Bände (von 14). Gr. 8° (22,5 -25 cm). Orig.-Leinenbände mit Orig.-Schutzumschlägen. [Hardcover / fest gebunden]. [...]. - The Enzyklopädie des Märchens (Encyclopedia of the Folktale) (published by Walter de Gruyter) is a reference work presenting the results of almost two centuries of international research in the field of folk narrative tradition past and present. By 2014, 14 volumes have been published (Aarne - Zypern). The Encyclopedia is to comprise 14 volumes, each volume consisting of three fascicles and containing a total of 720 pages. As of 1997, it is published at the rate of one fascicle per year. Once completed, the Encyclopedia will comprise approximately 3900 alphabetically arranged entries categorized as follows: \"Theories and methods, genre questions, problems of style and structure, issues of context and performance; Short monographs on important tale-types and motifs; Biographies of scholars, collectors, and authors of literary works relevant to folk narrative research; National and regional surveys providing information about folk narrative tradition and folk narrative research. The title Enzyklopädie des Märchens does not imply a genre restriction to Märchen in terms of modern definitions. The Encyclopedia deals with all narrative categories which the Brothers Grimm, according to their broad conception of Märchen, have included in their Household Tales, i. e. tales of magic, but also animal tales, fables, religious tales, aetiological narratives, religious, historical, and demonological legends, novelle, humorous tales, formula tales, etc. This corresponds to the genres found in the AaTh and ATU indices. The Encyclopedia aims at comparing the rich stock of narrative material available from a broad range of ethnic groups which has been transmitted orally and through the medium of literature, and at pointing out its social, historical, psychological and religious backgrounds. It focuses on the oral and literary narrative traditions of Europe, and of countries influenced by European culture, as well as on those from the Mediterranean area and from Asia. The folk traditions of peoples who have only recently become literate are dealt with in regional surveys. Furthermore, the channels of transmission of narrative themes and motifs are traced in sources such as exempla and sermon books, chronicles, legendaries and chapbooks, as well as literary works which have a bearing on oral tradition, thus illustrating the permanent exchange between literature and oral tradition.\" (Quelle: gwdg-de) - Hier vorliegend die Bände 1-13. Von Band 14 sind die Lieferungen 1-3 erschienen, welche auch über uns bezogen werden können; das Werk damit inhaltlich vollständig. Ein Registerband folgt noch. - Der Neupreis liegt bei 3280 Euro. - Schutzumschläge teilweise gering berieben. - Insgesamt sauberes und tadelloses Exemplar. - Dust jackets very slightly rubbed. - Very clean and good copy.         Autograph Letter Signed, 2 pp on one 8vo sheet of decorative stationery, n.p., Oct. 10, 1979, with signed transmittal envelope and return address of Duke Univ. Music Dept., Durham, NC, and printed copy of Williams "History of Jazz" tree

      - Williams offers her view on blacks playing Jazz. "I said in the Ebony that no black 35 yrs of age can play the music his ancestors (slaves) suffered for. They have lost the spiritual feeling - The whites play the music best. It's a shame - we allowed Africa to lay a bomb on us. Jazz is an American Art - created from suffering of the early black slaves. The black American became ashamed of the spirituals blues, slaves etc., losing a great art - JAZZ! Study the enclosed tree." She signs, "Mary Lou Williams." Duke University appointed Mary Lou William artist-in-residence in 1977. She wrote our fine letter two years after her appointment and held that position she held until her death in 1981. Slight soiling along vertical margin folds, envelope torn open along side. Williams was as an important jazz composer who continued to grow musically throughout her life. Her most noted compositions are "Zodiac Suite" and "Mary Lou's Mass." A documentary of Williams life, "Mary Lou Williams: The Lady Who Swings the Band," directed by Carol Bash, was released April 2015.

The Fury (Original screenplay, plus four sets of revised pages)

Los Angeles: Frank Yablans Presentations / Twentieth Century-Fox, 1977. Final script for the 1978 science fiction/horror film, "The Fury," directed by Brian DePalma, based on the 1976 novel by John Farris, written for the screen by Farris and DePalma, and starring Kirk Douglas, John Cassavetes, Carrie Snodgrass, Charles Durning, and Amy Irving. The script is accompanied by four sets of revised sheets (with the name of unidentified cast/crew member John Friedkin in pencil at the top of the first revision set) on pink and orange stock, dated August 15, September 12, September 16, and November 17, respectively. Literally a "mind-blowing" film, in which two young psychic savants (Amy Irving and Andrew Stevens) possess the ability to blow up the head of a another person by means of telekinesis. Douglas and Cassavetes play two men (one good, one evil) battling for control over the youngsters, with Cassavetes on the nefarious side of the line. One of DePalma's most entertaining genre films, pre-dating Cronenberg's slightly more intellectual "Scanners" by 3 years. White studio wrappers, dated June 20, 1977 and with credits for both Frank Yablans Presentations and Twentieth Century-Fox. Title page present, with a screenwriter credit for Farris. 133 leaves, blue stock, mechanically reproduced. Some corner creasing to the last several leaves else pages and wrapper are Near Fine, bound with two gold brads.

Tokyo: Popeye, 1977-1979. Magazines are in uniformly very good to near fine condition, with only small faults; posters have folds and show light wear.. First Editions. Quartos. Five special volumes of the legendary Japanese magazine, Popeye: Frisbee, Tennis, Skiing, and Surfing (two distinct volumes). The Frisbee issue includes two posters, and the 1978 Surf Boy issue also comes with a poster. The defining Japanese magazine of its era: lavishly, thoroughly, and fetishistically illustrated with as exhaustive and compelling a gamut of illustrations of the Good Life as has ever been documented in print (except, possibly, in other special Japanese magazines of the era). An unbelievable marriage of design and information, presented in a style and format so ahead of its time as to have never been duplicated.
