In Patagonia [Hardcover Advance Proof Copy]

London/NY: Jonathan Cape/Summit. 1977/1978. A hardcover advance proof copy of the American edition of Chatwin's first book, created from a first British edition, with the addition of a U.S. proof dust jacket, featuring quotes from British publications (including Paul Theroux, writing for the London Times). The British trade edition has had its free endpages excised and pasted over the pictorial pastedowns; and the photographs that graced the text of the British edition have also been excised, in keeping with the appearance of the American edition. This copy was obviously sent out and used for review: reviewer's marks and comments in text, and the blank jacket flaps have been filled with the reviewer's notes. The book, apart from the intended excisions and notes, is fine; the proof jacket (again, apart from the reviewer notes), is spine and edge-sunned, with the title and author handwritten on the spine, largely faded; overall near fine. An uncommon issue, presumably done prior to the issuance of an American proof copy and different from the U.K. first edition in ways that parallel the eventual U.S. edition (and U.S. proof). First Edition. Hardcover.

London: Printed by Will Carter at the Rampant Lions Press for Clover Hill Editions, 1977. COPY "E" OF SEVEN COPIES PRINTED ON VELLUM and specially bound, from a total edition of 337 copies n. Hardcover. With Striking and Evocative Woodcuts Noticeably RicherOn Vellum than in the 1927 Golden Cockerel Press Edition. 343 x 264 mm (13 1/2 x 10 3/8"). 6 p.l. (the first one a blank), 30 pp., [3] leaves. Two volumes (including portfolio). COPY "E" OF SEVEN COPIES PRINTED ON VELLUM and specially bound, from a total edition of 337 copies. Original publisher's special russet crushed morocco by Sangorski & Sutcliffe (stamp-signed on front turn-in), raised bands, gilt titling, turn-ins ruled in gilt and black, marbled endpapers; portfolio in a marbled paper clamshell box backed with matching morocco. Both in a (lightly rubbed) felt-lined linen slipcase. WITH 10 WOOD ENGRAVINGS BY DAVID JONES AND THREE ADDITIONAL SUITES OF THE PLATES, one on vellum, another on handmade paper, and the third on Japon, the engravings printed from the original wood blocks on an Albion hand press by Ian Mortimer at I. M. Imprimit. Errata slip laid in at colophon. A pristine copy. This is the magnificent vellum printing of modernist poet and wood engraver David Jones' masterwork. His striking and evocative woodcuts look noticeably richer--and consequently have greater impact--in this vellum reprint than they did in the 1927 Golden Cockerel Press edition in which they originally appeared. The additional suites of plates permit us to compare the printing on vellum side by side with two (fine) paper versions, and unsurprisingly the vellum is the clear winner. This luxury version is very rare: our copy seems to be one of only two on vellum sold at auction since the book's publication date.

Munich: Idion Verlag, 1977. ONE OF A SMALL NUMBER OF COPIES IN THE SPECIAL DELUXE BINDING (of a total of 955 copies printed, 895 of them for sale) n. Hardcover. In Magnificent Brass-Clad Calf, the Finest FormOf the Best Facsimile of the Gutenberg Bible. 457 x 330 mm (18 x 13"). Two volumes, with an additional volume of commentary (in German). ONE OF A SMALL NUMBER OF COPIES IN THE SPECIAL DELUXE BINDING (of a total of 955 copies printed, 895 of them for sale). VERY ORNATE BLINDSTAMPED CALF OVER THICK WOODEN BOARDS by Ernst Ammering, covers panelled with central diapered field, multiple blind rules forming several compartments on covers and spines containing nearly 500 individual stamps (mostly ornamental, but a charming stamp of a lute player on either side of the central panel on each cover), large brass corner and center bosses, double raised bands, spine panels with decoration in blind similar to the covers, leather thongs with brass clasps and catches. Initials, chapter numbers, and headlines printed in red and blue, APPROXIMATELY 100 ILLUMINATED INITIALS, some with marginal extension, the openings of each of the books of the Bible with large illuminated initials (MANY OF THESE CONTAINING MINIATURES) IN SEVERAL COLORS AND GOLD AND WITH ELABORATE FANCIFUL MARGINAL BORDERS incorporating flowers, foliage, animals, etc., the whole reproduced in collotype in as many as 10 colors and gold. In mint condition. This is certainly the most beautiful facsimile ever issued of the first substantial European book to be done with movable type. Printed on a one-time batch of luxurious Van Gelder rag paper, our magnificent replica edition was reproduced from the copy of the 42-line Bible in the possession of the Prussian State Library in Berlin, one of the most richly illuminated copies in existence. Our deluxe binding is a copy of the one on the Gutenberg Bible at the Hessian State Library in Fulda. (This facsimile edition was also offered in a simpler calf binding and in a binding of calf-backed wooden boards.) Offered here with the Bible itself is a large folio companion volume that contains commentary in German dealing with various aspects of the Gutenberg Bible, including a census of copies, an essay on the illumination of various examples, and so on. Of particular importance, the companion volume also contains the "Tabula Rubricarum." These are hand-written additions, of which there are only two known examples, in which Gutenberg gives precise directions for the embellishment of the text. In the deluxe binding of the facsimile offered here (in which form it cost more than $6,000 at the time of publication 34 years ago), these two very substantial volumes represent an arresting production.

Framed Typed Letter Signed about show business

1977. unbound. 1 page on personal stationery, 10.5 x 7.25 inches, no place, November 9, 1977. In this jovial letter, which includes five handwritten words, Cukor talks about mutual acquaintances in the entertainment industry and discusses his plans for upcoming projects, in part: "This is the life! What a racket - this writing reviews, biographies -- and cleaning up. Boy, it's lucky for you that I didn't find out how easy it is - I'd've gone after Ethel Merman myself. But from here on in, no holds barred! I'm in this for good - so watch out...I'm going to follow Liz Smith's invaluable and intelligent suggestion that I write 'MY FRIEND, GRETA'. No - I'd better not do that because Gaylor Hauser said 'She's my best friend.' I'll think up another title...I'm glad that it was happy times with Miss Merman; also that you talked yourself into getting one percent of the Cole Porter show. It gives me an idea, I'll get into that side of it later on -- writing musical shows..." Three horizontal folds and a small stain near the bottom left corner, but overall in very good condition. Float-mounted above a 3.5 x 4.5-inch black-and-white photo of Cukor crouching outdoors on one knee with two dogs. Matted in gray and set in a white frame measuring 19 x 12 inches. American film director, who had a close friendship with Katharine Hepburn and many other celebrities.

James Bond, The Spy Who Loved Me

London: Jonathan Cape. 1977, 1977. FIRST EDITION. Octavo. Publisher's black cloth-effect paper over boards with gilt titles to spine in original jacket designed by Bill Botten. Both book and jacket are a little worn, page edges spotted, jacket with a few short tears; generally in very good condition. This is the original story / novel of the 1977 James Bond film 'The Spy Who Loved Me' written under licence from Ian Fleming's copyright holders Glidrose. When Fleming sold the film rights to his novels he would not consent to this title and Moonraker being filmed as written; he felt 'The Spy Who Loved Me' was an experimental novel (with female perspective and narrative), and 'Moonraker' was somewhat dated; therefore both would need re-writing and Christopher Wood was brought in by director Lewis Gilbert to produce a screenplay and subsequent novel, a task he repeated for the next film 'Moonraker'.

        Ode to Typography

(Torrance): Labyrinth Editions, 1977. Bigus, Richard. Translated by Enrique Sacerio-Gari. Tall quarto. (15)ff., frenchfold. One of 100 copies, this copy signed by Richard Bigus and especially bound for Lord John Press founder Herb Yellin. Neruda's long poem celebrating the joys of the printed letter arranged in concrete typography by Bigus, who learned the craft of printing under the tutelage of William Everson and Jack Stauffacher at U.C. Santa Cruz. There he printed a few books of his own verse as well as broadsides of concrete and haiku poetry. For him, the visualization of the word became paramount. "Ode to Typography" was produced as his thesis for the Master of Fine Arts from Yale. This is his first true book, and it created a sensation when it appeared. The controversies of the modern press movement that had begun with Everson raged anew with the arrival of Bigus. For our part, we believe that "Ode to Typography" is a stunning tour de force, and through the test of time it will come to be regarded as one of the most important books of this era. Neruda's magnificent poem provides the essence of the design with its grammatical usage. The lines are handset at five different angles, changing direction at each period, colon and semicolon. Thus the movement of forms -- black type and negative white space -- becomes as pure as the geometry of letterforms themselves. To quote Bigus, "This design gives form to Neruda's poetic breath." In a special binding of stab-sewn gray cloth and marbled paper-covered boards, and housed in a chemise portfolio with ribbon ties. Mint. (5 Fine Printers, 1979).

In the Heart of the Country [Signed for the Publisher]

Secker & Warburg, London 1977 - His first novel published outside of his native South Africa (published in the U.S. as From the Heart of the Country), this was also his first book to tackle head-on the political antagonisms between the colonizer and colonized, in particular in his native South Africa, where the tensions were exacerbated by racism. He has returned to these themes repeatedly, and has won the Nobel Prize for Literature as well as winning the Booker Prize twice. This book was made into the film Dust in 1985, directed by Marion Hansel, which won two awards at the Venice Film Festival that year. Signed by the author for the publisher, Tom Rosenthal. Laid in is an autograph note signed by Rosenthal, dated in 2007: "John Coetzee signed this book for me when he came here for dinner on his next visit to London following his first Booker Prize win with Life & Times of Michael K." Mild toning to endpages; near fine in a near fine dust jacket with the original price intact and no sticker, with tanning to the spine lettering and trace edge wear. A very nice copy of a ground-breaking book, by one of the most acclaimed authors of our time, and seldom found signed. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
