Holy the Firm [The Author's Copy]

NY: Harper & Row. (1977). Annie Dillard's own copy of this small book of poetic meditations, marked by her on nearly two dozen pages (roughly a third of the book). The great majority of the markings serve as a map, as though for a reading, including the instruction "pause." Perhaps two or three instances of editing. Holy the Firm was Dillard's third book, and her intention was to write about whatever happened on Lummi Island, where she was living, during a three-day period. When an airplane crashed on the island on the second day, it caused her to meditate on the problem of pain, and how a just and merciful God would allow natural evil to occur in the world. These meditations on pain, God, and evil continued to resonate throughout her work, particularly in her award-winning volume For the Time Being, published in 1999, more than 20 years after this book. Near fine in a very near fine dust jacket. "Ex Libris Annie Dillard" bookplate on the verso of the half title. A unique copy of one of the volumes that characterizes Dillard's unique place in our literature: Holy the Firm is only 66 pages long but took her 14 months of writing full-time to complete, and it embodies her concerns with philosophy -- in Greek, literally, "the love of wisdom" -- as well as religion, metaphysics, the natural world, and the place of human life and consciousness within and among all of these. First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine.

Cantilena e Scherzo for String Quartet and Harp (1977) - AUTOGRAPH MANUSCRIPT BY OSIAN ELLIS

Used; Like New/Used; Like New. An interesting autograph manuscript by the harpist and composer who gave the first performance of the work, evidently copied by him from the manuscript and with his detailed markings and corrections and annotations throughout, this being almost certainly the copy used by him in preparation of the first performance.  Upright folio. 10 pp. Accomplished in black, blue and purple ink, and pencil. In fine condition. <br style="">The Welsh harpist and composer Osian Ellis was former Principal harpist of the London Symphony Orchestra, first harpist of the Melos Ensemble and is especially known for his musical association with Benjamin Britten. <br style="">The Cantilena and Scherzo was first performed at Alice Tully Hall (New York, Lincoln Center) on March 15, 1977 by Osian Ellis, James Buswell (violin), Ani Kavafian (violin), Walter Trampler (viola) and Leslie Parnas (cello).  The work has its roots in Ravel's Introduction and Allegro and Debussy's Danse sacrée et danse profane, but instead of separating the two movements, Menotti frames the Scherzo with the Cantilena's lyrical material, creating a ternary structure. The very choice of the word 'Cantilena' betrays Menotti's preoccupation with vocal writing, and the result is suitably song-like, full of melodic richness, sustained string writing, and a resonating harp part. A passionate climax leads into the mercurial triple-rhythm Scherzo, before the Cantilena's joyous return.

The Amazing Spider-Man (Archive of 5 scripts for the 1977 television show belonging to actor Michael Pataki)

Los Angeles: Charles Fries Productions, 1977. Archive of five scripts for four episodes from Season One of "The Amazing Spider-Man" television series in 1977. All belonging to actor Michael Pataki, who played police captain Barbera in the series, each with his holograph name on either the front wrapper or title page, and his lines and stage directions circled throughout, with one of the scripts also including substantial holograph changes to Barbera's dialog and action. &#11;&#11;"The Amazing Spider-Man" debuted on CBS in September 1977 with a two hour television movie serving as the pilot, the first live action treatment of Marvel's flagship hero outside of some occasional segments that aired as part of PBS's "The Electric Company" earlier in the decade. Five more episodes of Season One aired the following April and May. A second series of eight episodes aired during the 1978-79 season. Although a ratings success, CBS chose not to renew "The Amazing Spider-Man" for a third season, because they were already committed to "The Incredible Hulk" and "Wonder Woman" live action series, and were wary of being dismissed as a one dimensional "superhero network," a somewhat mystifying reason when viewed in from the almost total domination by comic book characters of the pop culture of today. &#11;&#11;Included in the archive are a draft script for the two hour television movie pilot, "Spider-Man," here under the working title "The Mind Stealers," Second Revised Final draft scripts for episode two, "The Deadly Dust Part One," both a First Draft and a Second Revised Final draft of episode three, "The Deadly Dust Part Two," and a Second Draft script for episode five, "Night of the Clones," here under the working title "The Dark Side of Dr. Moon." Brown titled wrappers with "John Pearce" written across the top in blue ink. Title page present, with credits for screenwriter Marcus, novelist Brodeur and director Rush. 137 leaves, mimeograph, with revision pages throughout.         Cantilena e Scherzo for String Quartet and Harp (1977) - AUTOGRAPH MANUSCRIPT BY OSIAN ELLIS

1977. The Welsh harpist and composer Osian Ellis was former Principal harpist of the London Symphony Orchestra, first harpist of the Melos Ensemble and is especially known for his musical association with Benjamin Britten. The Cantilena and Scherzo was first performed at Alice Tully Hall (New York, Lincoln Center) on March 15, 1977 by Osian Ellis, James Buswell (violin), Ani Kavafian (violin), Walter Trampler (viola) and Leslie Parnas (cello).
