Original triple screw post bound blue-green cloth with black lettering to spine and front cover.Splendidly illustrated throughout with 213 duo-tone photographs scrupulously reproduced and bound ledger-style, "The American Monument" is a humorous, lyrical, and excessive expression of a country's obsession with immortalizing itself.         PACIFIC OVERTURES (Bound Presentation Score)

New York: Privately Printed, 1976. Sondheim, Stephen. Thomas Z. Shepard. PACIFIC OVERTURES, Original Dye-Line Copy of the Autograph Musical Manuscript, Composer's Score, Used in the Recording of the Broadway Cast Album. New York: Privately Printed, [1976-1977]. First (and only) printing, presumably limited to a small handful of presentation copies. Bound in green cloth (slightly abraded on the back cover), front and spine with "Pacific Overtures" lettered in gilt, this magnificent folio (15" by 12" by 1 ¼") is a warmly inscribed gift to Thomas Z. Shepard, Producer of the RCA Broadway cast soundtrack of PACIFIC OVERTURES (and a winner of 12 Grammy Awards for his various Broadway cast recordings, including several by Sondheim) from the Music Preparation team of Mathilde Pincus and Al Miller. Pincus and Miller prepared this Pacific Overtures score for the Conductor and the Orchestra Musicians via transcribing it into individual parts, with all the music as played originally in the Broadway Production, complete with all significant instrumental cues. Near Fine condition with great eye appeal. Laid in is a copy of a photograph of the recording session featuring the team of Thomas Z. Shepard, Stephen Sondheim, Music Director Paul Gemignani, Kenneth Glancy (RCA company president) and Hal Prince. Mr. Shepard has hand-written their names on the back of the photocopy along with a sentiment ("the sessions were joyous") re: their collaboration. This folio is inscribed on the ffep: "Dear Tom: To our dear, dear friend. We hope the next book we present will be your very own opera. Love Mathilde and Al, May 27th, 1977." There is also a later ink inscription by Shepard gifting this book to a collector. Thomas Z. Shepard's archive is already residing at Yale University; it contains virtually every item related to his prolific career so this is an exceedingly rare escapee. . Signed. First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine. Folio - over 12" - 15" tall.

1 TLS (Typed Letter Signed) on the Wild Bunch, March 6, 1976

1976. Typed on 8 1/2" x 11" paper, signed by Sam Peckinpah on March 6, 1976 from the Hotel Konigshorf where he was residing. The Wild Bunch was the first realistic violent film of the Old West. When the studio decided to screen it in Kansas City, the audience reacted violently, some were throwing up, others threatening the operator of the projector while Sam Peckinpaugh looked down with delight and said that he was ready to take on all comers himself if they burst into the booth. The studio issued instead a seriously cut version which made no sense but in this letter the fan wants to see the uncut version. Peckinpah here promises when he returns from Europe, he will be delighted to show the fan the real film (not the fan who claims to have seen the edited version 17 times). "Thanks you for your obvious support of the San Peckinpah Benevolent Fund. Every cent helps." A little damp staining to lower edge not affecting letter.

Inuit Land Use and Occupancy Project : A Report Prepared by Milton Freeman Research Limited Under Contract with the Department of Indian and Northern Affairs. Volumes 1, 2 & 3 Complete (First Nations, Land Claims)

Minister of Supply and Services Canada, Ottawa, ON 1976 - Illustrated card wraps, three 4to volumes (12 inches [30.5 cm] tall), pp. [v.1 Land Use and Occupancy], 263, color frontis, 56 maps ; [v.2 Supporting Studies with photo essay by Terry Pearce], 287, maps 57-84 (some fold-outs), 20 tables ; [v.3 Land Use Atlas], xxiii, errata, 153 color maps (some fold-outs) plus color map endpapers, index, notes, references. Volume covers with light wear, bumps and creases - text unmarked in all three volumes. A famous and landmark report which successfully demonstrated both use and occupancy by the Inuit of their traditional lands and waterways - thereby laying important groundwork for the Northwest Territories, Indigenous peoples and to some degree, helping to move towards a sort of Arctic "Declaration of Independence" through the Circumpolar Inuit Declaration on Arctic Sovereignty. From the preface "In February 1973 Inuit Tapirisat of Canada proposed to the Minister of Indian and Northern Affairs that research be undertaken to produce a comprehensive and verifiable record of Inuit land use and occupancy in the Northwest Territories of Canada. The record so obtained would delimit the present and past use and occupation of the land and marine environment and would categorize the uses which any particular area served. In view of the continuing role which land plays in defining the cultural and ecologic circumstances of Inuit society, the research was also to provide an explicit statement - by the Inuit - of their perceptions of the man-land relationship." (Freeman, 1976, p. 19). ISBN - v1 0660003996 ; v2 0660004003 ; v3 0660004011. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

        Light Years [Signed]

New York: Random House, 1976. First Printing. Hardcover. Fine/Fine-. First Edition (so stated) of the author's master work, signed by Salter on the title page. 8vo: [2],308,[2]pp. Publisher's olive paper-covered boards stamped in gilt with author's monogram, cream-colored cloth spine lettered in lime and gilt, untrimmed fore-edge, pictorial dust jacket priced $7.95. Light sunning to board edges (as typical), closed tear at crown, else about fine, square, tight (seemingly unread), and bright. "It is an article of faith among readers of fiction that James Salter writes American sentences better than anyone writing today," says Richard Ford in his introduction to the Penguin Classics edition of Light Years. This exquisite, resonant work is a brilliant portrait of a marriage, the story of Nedra and Viri, whose favored life is centered around candlelit dinners, ingenious games with their children, enviable friends, and near-perfect days passed skating on a frozen river or sunning on the beach. But even as Salter lingers over the surface of their marriage, he shows the fine cracks spreading through it, flaws that will eventually mar the lovely picture beyond repair. N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed.

[Screenplay]: Tribal Rites of Saturday Night (working title). [Saturday Night Fever]

Los Angeles: RSO Films. [1976]. First. Film script. Quarto. [1], 152pp. First revision #1. Mechanically reproduced leaves printed rectos only, brad-bound in printed white studio wrappers. Modest soiling on the wrappers, very near fine. [With]: two Paramount Pictures still photographs from the film, both of John Travolta, one dancing, the other in his classic white outfit. Early draft of the script based on Nik Cohn's 1976 article for New York Magazine, "Tribal Rites of Saturday Night" retaining the title of the article. Cohn later admitted that he knew little about the disco subculture when he was asked to write a piece about it. Eventually released as Saturday Night Fever as the iconic disco film that made John Travolta and his white suit famous, and featuring some of the most popular disco songs of the era. The film was set in Brooklyn and was entirely shot there on location. Travolta was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor. The script is credited "Screenplay by Norman Wexler from an article and script by Nik Cohn. The film, whether you like it or not, is in the National Film Registry. The ultimate disco film. .

The Ad Hoc bulletin (Marxist-Leninist) [13 issues of the newsletter produced by the FBI-financed pseudo-faction in the Communist Party, USA]

the Committee, Chicago 1976 - Thirteen issues of the photoreproduced bulletin on 8.5x14 inch sheets stapled at upper left corner; length ranges from 9 to 16 pages per issue. Faint horizontal fold crease to all issues, minor toning to the first one. Issues included are vol. 7 nos. 3, 4; vol. 8 nos. 1 [with final page loose but present] and 3, vol. 9 nos. 1 and 2, vol. 10 nos. 1 and 2, vol. 11 no. 1, vol. 14 no. 3, a Special Edition on the Communist Party's 21st national convention in 1975 (this issue in 8.5x11 inch format), and two with inconsistent, divergent numbering, No. 3 vol. 2 (November 1975) and No. 4, vol. 1 (May 1976). The identity of the Ad Hoc Committee has long been unclear; some have claimed it was a secret faction in the Chicago branch of the CPUSA, though one wonders how such an ardently Maoist formation could have tolerated remaining in the CPUSA for so many years. The riddle has been resolved through declassified FBI documents. In the book "Heavy Radicals," Aaron J. Leonard and Conor A. Gallagher transcribe FBI documents showing that the Committee was actually a project of agent S.A. Stallings, designed to disrupt the CPUSA by creating "in the eyes of the CP the existence of a factional grouping within the Illinois district and nationally if possible which adheres to the Chinese interpretation of Marxism-Leninism." These bulletins, which make very passable use of M-L jargon and polemical style, were designed to sow discord and mistrust between revolutionaries with the ultimate goal of weakening the movement. Each issue includes a prominent call for funds to be sent to a PO Box, and it is possible that some of the content was also written and submitted by real believers, published in the pages of the Bulletin for additional verisimilitude. The earliest issue here, from June 1969, includes a piece on "Black liberation and working class solidarity" by the chairman (not named here, but apparently Donald Wright, who went on to disrupt other Marxist-Leninist organizations). For more on the FBI and the Ad Hoc Committee, see "The U.S. Domestic Intelligence Enterprise: History, Development, and Operations" by Darren E. Tromblay, beginning on page 383.

Of all the Christmas observances we have enjoyed - at the White House, in California, in Florida, and at Camp David - this is without question one of the best" - with 18 word handwritten postscript

San Clemente, California, January 6, 1976. 7.25" x 10.5". "Typed Letter Signed ""Dick"" with 18 word handwritten postscript, 1 page, 7.25"" x 10.5"". San Clemente, California, January 6, 1976. On stationery engraved ""Richard Nixon / La Casa Pacifica / San Clemente, California."" Handwritten salutation. [To Jack Dreyfus]. Fine condition. In part, ""Dear Jack This is just a note to tell you how deeply touched and appreciative Pat and I were by your thoughtfulness in remembering us at Christmas time. Late in the evening on Christmas Day, sitting around the fireplace in our living room which overlooks the Pacific, we remarked that of all the Christmas observances we have enjoyed -- at the White House, in California, in Florida, and at Camp David -- this as without question one of the best. We were fortunate that the whole family could be together…"" Read the entire in the image above. The former President writes about who was at his second Christmas after resigning: daughter Tricia and son-in-law Ed Cox, daughter Julie and son-in-law David Eisenhower, Irish setter King Timahoe, French poodle Vickie, Yorkshire terrier Pasha, and Manolo and Fina Sanchez, the Nixon's personal house-couple. Manolo did the chores, gardening, repairs, up-keep while Fina did the cleaning and cooking; they both did the shopping. After thanking Dreyfus for his ""delectable fruit cake,"" Nixon handwrites ""When you are down this way we would enjoy having you drop by fir dinner - (Informal - just fun!)""Financier Jack Dreyfus (1913-2009) was the founder of the Dreyfus Fund. In 1964, Life magazine called him the “Maverick Wizard Behind the Wall Street Lion,” in reference to the emblem of his fund and its aggressive marketing. Dreyfus, it said, was “the most singular and effective personality to appear in Wall Street since the days of Joseph Kennedy and Bernard Baruch.” His paternal grandfather was a first cousin of Alfred Dreyfus, the protagonist of the late 19th-century anti-Semitic scandal known as the Dreyfus Affair. Dreyfus sold his mutual fund company in 1970 and established the Dreyfus Health Foundation to pursue other medical applications for Dilantin which had cured his depression in the 1960s. In 2000, Dreyfus said that an account in The Arrogance of Power: The Secret World of Richard Nixon by Anthony Summers (New York: Viking, 2000) that he gave Dilantin to Richard Nixon in 1968 was correct. Dreyfus said he gave Nixon a bottle of 1,000 capsules of 100 milligrams each ''when his mood wasn't too good,'' and later gave him another bottle of 1,000 capsules."
