        American Monument

1976 - FRIEDLANDER, Lee. The American Monument. New York: Eakins, (1976). Oblong folio, original post-bound blue-gray cloth. $3000.First edition of this comprehensive photographic work on public monuments, one of only 2000 copies, with 213 photogravure plates."Twelve years in the making, The American Monument is almost maniacally inclusive, rounding up everything from Plymouth Rock to a plaque commemorating the Pony Express in Salt Lake City and treating them all with the same deliberate nonchalance. The doggedness of Friedlander’s quest is at once astounding and hilarious Friedlander’s memorials, no matter how solidly anchored, seem adrift, lost in the landscape, unnoticed if not forgotten Tidy arrangements of two, three and four pictures multiply obsessively as the book’s momentum builds; towards the end, there are accumulations of six and nine photos to a page. The result is overwhelming, as it clearly was intended to be. History stalks the landscape at every turn" (Roth, 236). Open Book 310. A fine copy. [Attributes: First Edition]

Facsimile of The Book of Los.

Clairvaux, Jura, France: by the Trianon Press for the William Blake Trust, London,, 1976. Large quarto. Original tan full morocco, spine lettered in gilt. With the original hand-made marbled slipcase. Colour plates reproducing the original Book of Los. A few light marks to covers, a few spots to fore-edge, an excellent copy. First edition thus, copy II of 32 copies bound in full morocco with an original guide sheet, stencil and copperplate, and a set of extra plates showing progressive stages of the collotype and hand-stencil process, from a total edition of 538 copies, printed on Arches pure rag paper made to match the paper used by Blake. Blake scholar Geoffrey Keynes (1887-1982), the brother of John Maynard, provides a commentary and bibliographical history. "The Book of Los was the first of the two small books executed by Blake mainly as etchings on copper to be printed as ordinary intaglio plates. The Book of Ahania was the companion volume ? The title-pages of both books were dated by Blake 1795, so that they were probably the last ones to be produced in his Lambeth house. Each book exists in only a single copy ? The Book of Los ? has been since 1866 in the British Museum" (Keynes). Only one copy of the Book of Los is known. These beautifully produced facsimiles of Blake are now highly regarded in their own right.

        Running Dog: One and Done

Unpag. (approx. 150 sheets) first and only issue of Running Dog Press Magazine, edited by Michael Crane, in the form of an unbound xeroxed artist's book, containing various contributions from artists working around the world, including Ken Friedman, Klaus Groh, Carl Johnson, Y Matsuzawa, Endre Tot, Allen Ross, and Horacio Zabala. Illustrated profusely throughout. 4to. Orig. wrpps., pages loose as issued, housed in the original printed manila envelope. Chicago (Running Dog Press) 1976. The introductory note from Michael Crane reads as follows: "'Running Dog One and Done' is the first issue of the Running Dog Press magazine. The attempt of this publication is to present the documents of the experiments and explorations artists are undertaking today on an international level. Its scope is to be inclusive of the reports and ideas of those individuals involved in research, and hopes to see the definition of 'artist' expand to include the contributions from scientific and sociological fields as well....This issue is a collective effort and is made available by the energy and contributions of all the artists included. '...One and Done' is unbound because this issue is not thematic and is a collection of various materials from a diversity of places and mental spaces. It is also unbound so that the readers can recycle the pages within their own informations system." Scarce; as of September 2016, WorldCat locates only three holdings in North American institutions.

Primer Congreso del Partido Comunista de Cuba: Memorias; 3 Volumes [SIGNED]

Three volumes. White full cloth with gilt lettering on front boards in glossy red, blue, black and green jackets featuring silhouettes of a mass of people with upraised weapons against a Cuban flag. Square quartos. Volume I is inscribed and signed by Fidel Castro on the title page: "A Curbelo por su firme traycetonia en nuestro Partido Historíco le obsequio estos ejemplares como Memorias Imperecederas de este trascendental momento. / Revolucionariamente: / Fidel Castro / Septiembre 10 de 1976." It is possible - indeed, likely - that this inscription is addressed to Raúl Curbelo Morales, a party loyalist who served as head of the air force during the Bay of Pigs invasion, and later as vice-president of INRA and minister of communications. 384 + 11 [photos]; 420; 188 + 63 [photos]. Illustrated with black and white as well as color photographs. Jackets chipped with peeling laminate in some places, damp staining (primarily visible on the inside) and sunned spines. Volumes are near very good, with some light foxing. Volume two has an open nick and heavy bump to spine head. Otherwise, overall a tight and clean copy in slightly less than very good condition in a very good red slipcase. Official export certificate, dated 1976, laid-in. Provenance available upon request.
